2. The Case
A young adult male patient was
admitted to Sulaymaniyah Teaching
Hospital, Sulaymaniyah, Region of
Kurdistan, Iraq on the 25th of
September 2006 because of shortness
of breath (SOB) and bouts of dry cough
of a few months duration. CXR revealed
a big rounded smooth-outlined
homogenous opacity in the left upper
pulmonary zone. 2
5. The Case…
The patient was provisionally
diagnosed as a case of intact
pulmonary hydatid cyst as he had the
typical radiographic appearance of
(Full moon against dark sky). He was
subjected to left posterolateral
thoracotomy and the cyst was
removed by aspiration and
evacuation technique. The
postoperative course was smooth.

6. Comment
Hydatid disease is a dynamic entity
with varying imaging appearances.
Familiarity with imaging findings,
especially in patients living in
countries where this disease is
endemic, provides important
advantages in making the diagnosis.
Hydatid cyst should be kept in mind
when a cystic lesion is encountered
anywhere in the body [1]. 6
