Anterior Mediastinal Mass

2. The Case
A 37-years old male patient was
admitted to Sulaymaniyah Teaching
Hospital, Sulaymaniyah, Region of
Kurdistan, Iraq on 13th of October
2009 because of chest pain,
shortness of breath (SOB) and bouts
of dry cough of a few months
duration. CXR and CT scan of the
chest revealed a huge right-sided
anterior mediastinal mass. 2
7. The Case…
The patient had also a palpable lymph node
(LN) in the right side of the neck. The
patient had a complete blood count and
other hematological tests, whose results
were unfortunately unavailable to us at the
time of preparing this lecture. The patient
was prepared for right-sided Chamberlain
procedure (anterior mediastinotomy) and
cervical LN biopsy under general anesthesia
(GA). 7
8. The Case…
A piece of the anterior mediastinal
mass was taken for biopsy besides
excisional cervical LN biopsy. The
patient had a smooth
postoperative course. When the
biopsies results were obtained, he
was referred to the oncology
center to take the appropriate
treatment. 8

11. Comment
“The anterior mediastinotomy or the
Chamberlain procedure is a technique used
to biopsy the anterior mediastinal, the
periaortic, the aortopulmonary lymph
nodes, or the lung. The procedure is used as
a diagnostic tool for anterior mediastinal
masses like lymphomas or a diagnostic tool
for metastasis from lung cancers. This
invasive procedure is done when the other
techniques like endobronchial biopsy do not
supply adequate tissue” [1].
