1. Foreign Versus Domestic
Policy
• Other countries can decide on their own government
• Supporting them anywhere supports them everywhere
• Different set of criteria domestically
• Why do we need them in the West?
• What do they want?
2. They Want To Conquer Us
That’s probably not a good thing
3. The Ikhwan [Muslim Brotherhood] must understand that
their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in
eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from
within and "sabotaging" its miserable house by their hands
and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and
God's religion is made victorious over all other religions.
- Mohamed Akram, May 19, 1991
4. Are You
Serious?
• Unlikely to destroy Western Societies
• Sabotage is another matter
• They have become “mainstream.”
• Can we afford to ignore them?
• What are the likely impacts?
6. The term fundamentalism is used in many different contexts.
Perhaps the most common usage is in reference to the belief that
particular religious scriptures are the “authentic and inerrant word
of God.” This usage characterizes beliefs held in many religions and
serves no useful purpose in this inquiry which will instead rely upon
the work of Syrian-born Muslim scholar Bassam Tibi who
distinguishes “between Islam as a religious belief” and Islamic
fundamentalism as a political ideology” based on a “selective and
arbitrary politicization of religion.”
But They Are Really Islamists
