PERSONAL STATEMENT
I graduated in November 2013 with a PhD in Management and
Entrepreneurship from EMLYON Business School, France. In my dissertation
with student teams, I used social influence theory to show why members’
interpersonal communication processes overtime—their debates and conflicts
about shared tasks—can explain team innovation and effectiveness in a new
venture context. I published main paper from this work in the Journal of
Management in February 2015. I am an accomplished researcher and teacher
with considerable knowledge of both the applied research and methods
literatures, and extensive management experience. I can drew upon a deep
understanding of multilevel and longitudinal research design, measurement,
and data analysis to support research projects on many social and behavioral
science topics. In my positions as Research Fellow at University of Nordland,
Bodø, Norway and Visiting Research Fellow at Lund University, Sweden, I
am now working on several prospective and ongoing grant funded research
projects with several colleagues, which focus on new venture emergence and
early growth, including their cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral antecedents.

Comment
EMLYON provides a small, but focused, PhD Program on management and
entrepreneurship. It is one of the top business schools in Europe, with triple
accreditation, and commitment to providing excellent education, resources to
students, and a strong involvement in research.
MBA 2000-2002
University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland
International Business, Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Smurfit
Business School
Technology Management, Higher Diploma (HDip), National Institute of
Technology Management (NITM)
Comment
The combination of inputs from the general Business Administration program
and the specialized Technology Management program was a uniquely
powerful at the time. In the end, I found the questions even more fascinating
than the answers, and that was the catalyst for my move to academia.
BA 1980-1985
Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland
Economics & Philosophy, Bachelor of Arts, Two Subject Moderatorship
(BAMod),
Comment
The combination of subjects was fascinating to me at the time, while the
debates about the Cold War, Thatcherism, and Reaganomics were current
affairs, as opposed to history. However, since entering academia, my
grounding in economics, statistics, and the philosophy of science have been
more useful than I could have imagined.

Johnson CURRICULUM VITA Sunday, 05 April 2015 PERSONAL DETAILS Nationality Irish (eligible to work in the EU) Address 10 Chemin de la RAUDE 69160 TASSIN la Demi Lune FRANCE Phone +33 6 2694 7991 (mobile) +33 9 8052 9894 (land) Email alan_r.johnson@fek.lu.se Skype yodalotr PERSONAL STATEMENT I graduated in November 2013 with a PhD in Management and Entrepreneurship from EMLYON Business School, France. In my dissertation with student teams, I used social influence theory to show why members’ interpersonal communication processes overtime—their debates and conflicts about shared tasks—can explain team innovation and effectiveness in a new venture context. I published main paper from this work in the Journal of Management in February 2015. I am an accomplished researcher and teacher with considerable knowledge of both the applied research and methods literatures, and extensive management experience. I can drew upon a deep understanding of multilevel and longitudinal research design, measurement, and data analysis to support research projects on many social and behavioral science topics. In my positions as Research Fellow at University of Nordland, Bodø, Norway and Visiting Research Fellow at Lund University, Sweden, I am now working on several prospective and ongoing grant funded research projects with several colleagues, which focus on new venture emergence and early growth, including their cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral antecedents. QUALIFICATIONS PhD 2006-2013 EMLYON Business School, France Management and Entrepreneurship, Doctoral Program Doctoral dissertation— entitled “A Social Influence Interpretation of Members’ Interpersonal Processes and Team Level Outcomes using Bayesian Estimation and Bayes Factors”

Johnson (Vita) 2 Committee Principal Supervisor Dr. Frédéric Delmar, Professor in Entrepreneurship, School of Economics and Management, Lund University, Sweden External Examiner Dr. Michael A. West, Professor of Organizational Psychology, Lancaster University Management School, UK Faculty Opponent Dr. William D. Crano, Professor of Psychology, Claremont Graduate University, USA Committee Chair Dr. David Courpasson, Professor of Organizational Sociology, EMLYON Business School, France Comment EMLYON provides a small, but focused, PhD Program on management and entrepreneurship. It is one of the top business schools in Europe, with triple accreditation, and commitment to providing excellent education, resources to students, and a strong involvement in research. MBA 2000-2002 University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland International Business, Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Smurfit Business School Technology Management, Higher Diploma (HDip), National Institute of Technology Management (NITM) Comment The combination of inputs from the general Business Administration program and the specialized Technology Management program was a uniquely powerful at the time. In the end, I found the questions even more fascinating than the answers, and that was the catalyst for my move to academia. BA 1980-1985 Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland Economics & Philosophy, Bachelor of Arts, Two Subject Moderatorship (BAMod), Comment The combination of subjects was fascinating to me at the time, while the debates about the Cold War, Thatcherism, and Reaganomics were current affairs, as opposed to history. However, since entering academia, my grounding in economics, statistics, and the philosophy of science have been more useful than I could have imagined.

  • 8. Alan R. Johnson (Vita) 8 COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS 2010-present I have been an ad-hoc reviewer for Small Group Research (SGR) since 2009, an editorial board member of since 2010. Comment SGR is an international and interdisciplinary journal presenting research, theoretical advancements, and empirically supported applications with respect to all types of small groups (2012 Impact Factor: 1.164). 2010-present I have achieved an enviable level of competence with data analysis software, especially Stata and Mplus (advanced), and R (intermediate). Comment I have invested both considerable resources to attend several multilevel, longitudinal, and network data analysis (RSeina) training workshops. For example, two weeks in August 2012 and again in March/April 2013 with Dr. Joop Hox and his group at Utrecht University, Holland. And, a week with Dr. Christian Steglich, in Bertinoro Castle, Italy, September 2013 and another week with Dr. Tom Snijders, in GESIS Koln, Germany, March 2014. 2003-present I have maintained membership of the Entrepreneurship (ENT), Organizational Behavior (OB), and Research Methods (RM) divisions of the Academy of Management (AoM). Comment I am a regular reviewer of conference submissions for the OB division and they gave me an outstanding reviewer award in 2009. 2008-2010 I was the convener of E’ship Talks, a weekly one-hour research workshop, which I co-founded at EMLYON Business School with support from Frédéric Delmar and Erno Tornikoski. Comment The “brown-bag” series provides a semi-formal forum for active (mostly) entrepreneurship researchers, faculty, visiting professors, and advanced PhD students, to present their work, at various stages of development, and get some constructive feedback from a peer group. 2006-2010 I initiated an annual series of three-day Advanced Research Methods Seminars, with support from Bernard Forgues, PhD Program director, EMLYON Business School. Dr. Paul D. Allison, Professor of Sociology, specializing in Methodology and Statistics, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA led four seminars. Dr. Tenko Raykov, Professor of Measurement and Quantitative Methods, Michigan State University, USA.
