• The word derives from the Latin verb
narrare (to tell), which is derived from the
adjective gnarus (knowing or skilled)
• A narrative or story is an account of a series
of related events and experiences.
• Narrative writing makes up the main part of
what we know as storytelling.

• The purpose of a narrative text is
to tell a story. Provide details in
the sequence the events occur.
• There has to be a complication to
increase the interest of the reader.

• Involves readers in the story.
• Tells events in sequence.
• Includes detailed observations of people,
places and events.
• Focuses on connection between post events
people or places and the present.
• Contains a proper beginning, middle and an
end.
