The document condemns the violence ravaging parts of North East Delhi from February 24th onwards. It states that this violence is the result of systematic intimidation by Hindutva groups abetted by the ruling BJP party and aided by the police forces. The violence has destroyed lives and livelihoods, especially of minorities, Dalits, and the poor, tearing at the social fabric of coexistence. Armed gangs shouting slogans taught by BJP leaders attack people with weapons like rods and swords in a pattern that reeks of hatred against Muslims. The document calls on authorities to protect citizens and ensure safety, and demands accountability and action from the Home Minister, Chief Minister, and courts.
1. Delhi Unit of National Federation of Indian Women
25 February 2020
Violence ravaging parts of North East Delhi from the 24th
onwards, need to be condemned
unequivocally. NFIW Delhi would like to categorically state that we do not consider it to be a clash
between communities, as some narratives would have us believe. It is the result of systematic violence
and intimidation of the Hindutva goons abetted by the political dispensation in power and aided by the
police forces. The Islamophobic speeches and teaching of the RSS and the leaders of the BJP have
translated into the re-creation of the Gujarat Model of Violence in Delhi.
By the end the violence will have destroyed lives, livelihoods and most importantly a security cover that
had allowed minorities, Dalits and different sections of poor people to live in the country. Now the
discrimination is open, tearing open the social fabric that has sustained co-existence for the proverbial
seventy years since independence. The violence is showing a distinct pattern. Goons mouthing slogans,
taught to them by BJP and other right wing leaders, armed and dressed in fake police or army uniforms
uses small arms in the form of hammers, rods, stones, swords and trishuls. Backed by a police, they
show no compunction in beating people, torching property, ransacking houses and terrorizing the weak.
The entire exercise reeks of hatred for Muslims and a sociopathic behavior that needs to be curbed, not
shielded and encouraged.
We would like to point out to the administration of Delhi, the political parties in power and their support
base population that the victims of violence are human and Indian. Dissenting opinions need to be
heard, no suppressed. If there is a section of the population that disagrees with your ideas it is your job
and your duty as democratically elected members of the city and country to negotiate with them. A
bunch of goon, fed on the illusion that they are the state force, cannot be unleashed on an unarmed
civilian population in the name of clashes. Such behavior comes under the category of pogrom and
genocide.
We have reports of the rioters unzipping their pants and asking women protesting against the CAA
shouting, ‘le lo Azadi’. The fear of a group of protesting women, challenging convention seems to have
touched a raw nerve with the BJP. The need to sexually humiliate the women and abuse communities
emanates from the diet of bigotry and misogyny that the goons have been brought up on. From Gujarat
to JNU to Jamia to Jaffarbad/Maujpur, the story continues. Destroy property and disgrace women, if not
assault them. Violence perpetrated on Muslims in the name of Nationalism is the lowest form of
cowardice.
The Delhi unit of NFIW seeks an explanation from the Home Minister about the involvement of the
police in terrorizing the minorities, looking away from violence and facilitating the heinous brutalities
unleashed on Muslims in North East Delhi. Mr. Home Minister, your office is meant to protect the weak,
safeguard the rights of all humans in the country and as the controller of the Police in Delhi, ensure that
the forces do their job. If you are unable to keep the city safe and violence free, we urge you to resign
and publically confess to your inability to discharge your duties. Creating a parallel goon force will not
mask your incompetence and bigotry.
2. The Chief Minister of Delhi and his cabinet too must take moral responsibility of stopping a mob of
raving lunatics from rampaging across the city. If the pro-CAA criminals can muster a 100 armed men,
with its mandate AAP should not find it difficult to gather a force of 1000 to counter them. A thousand
unarmed men would be enough to deter the rioters from destroying the city. The least they elected
members of Delhi can do is provide succor to the victims.
NFIW Delhi seeks more than just an apology and condemnation from both AAP and the Home Minister.
It wants an accountability from all the offices that exist to safeguard human rights and democracy in the
country.
We want the Delhi High Court to take suo moto notice of the violence and institute a judicial enquiry
within 24 hours.
We would like to see the Human Rights Commission, the Minorities Commission and other bodies take
cognizance of the devastation and destruction caused by the organized goons.
We would particularly like to see a statement from the Delhi Commission for Women condemning the
attempt of the politically motivated patriarchal forces to crush the democratic voice of the women who
have been sitting for months trying to highlight their insecurity, vulnerability and fear of their human
rights not being respected.
We need all the citizens to remember that silence at this injustice will not only feed the demon, but will
showcase complicity with them.
General Secretary,
Delhi Unit (NFIW)
