2. Problem Statement
A
director of a large university IT organization with hiring
responsibilities
NEEDS A WAY TO
find entry-level candidates with both the technical skills
and the collaboration skills required to contribute to the
organization, and to bring these new entrants to the
workforce up to speed without wasting managers time
BECAUSE
the organization needs even its most junior employees
to be able to manage their own time, take ownership
of their work, and contribute independently and
creatively.
3. Concept 1: Mentor program for new hires to coach
recent students on working skills and collaboration
4. Concept 2: Project management program for new
hires to manage a “learning project” to completion
5. Both concepts were presented to original stakeholder
for feedback and ideas.
FEEDBACK SUMMARY:
expressed the most interest in the different roles of
manager and mentor.
wondered who would be mentor – a more senior
coworker or someone from another group?
felt the best way to address the problem would be
to increase avenues of feedback and support for
new hires.
expressed concern about making the training
project actually valuable to organization.
expressed concern that if manager and mentor
were not the same person, the training project
would not succeed.
