uses of coupling
Shaft couplings are used in machinery for
several purposes;
1. Power transmission
2. Join misaligned shafts
3. Reduce shocks and vibrations
4. Easy to assemble and disassemble
5. To connect driving and the driven part

3 Fluid coupling :
It is used in automotive transmission system,
marine propulsion system and in industries for
power transmission. It is used as an alternative
for the mechanical clutch.

What is Rivet
A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener used to
join two plates together. Because they’re
permanent in nature, their joints are similar to
those of adhesive or welded joints. They’re very
strong.

Parts of Rivet
The head has a greater diameter
than the hole the rivet is inserted
into, to act as a fastener on one
side of the material being riveted.
Rivet head
Rivet Pin
The pin slots through the
corresponding holes in the two
pieces of materials that are
being riveted together.

Types of Rivet head
The rivets are classified according to the shape of
the heads and the purpose for which they are
employed. Generally the following types of rivet
heads are used:
Button head
This type of rivet has a
hemispherical head, widely
used in machine riveting as
well as in boiler and
structural works.

Types of riveted joints
Following are the two types of riveted joints,
depending upon the way by which the plates are
connected;
Lap joint
A lap joint is that in which one plate overlaps the
other and the two plates are then riveted
together.
The major two types of lap joints are explained
as under;
Single riveted Lap joint
When the joint is made with only one row of
rivets, it is known as single riveted lap joint.

Types of riveted joints
Single riveted single cover butt
joint:
In this type more than one rivet are fixed
along a single row typically in a lap joint,
while in a butt joint the rows may appear
from both the upper and the lower surfaces.

Double riveted single cover
butt joint:

When joints is made with two rows of rivets
are passes in each side of the plate then it is
called double riveted butt joint
