1 Oldham's coupling :
A coupling for parallel shafts slightly out of line
consisting of a disk on the end of each shaft
and an intermediate disk having two mutually
perpendicular feathers on opposite sides that
engage slots in the respective shaft disks.

As name implies a double hook joint has two
hook’s joint or universal joint which are
connected by means of an intermediate shaft.

As name suggest it has flexible connection
between the input and the output shaft because
it is very difficult to make a proper aligned
connection between the two mating shafts

5 Rigid coupling :
Rigid coupling is used where the axes of both
the shafts are collinear. Rigid couplings are
simple and less costly, but the major drawback
of this type of coupling is that they cannot
tolerate any kind of small misalignment
between the axis of the shafts

a.) Muff coupling: This coupling also known as
sleeve coupling because it has sleeve or a kind
of hollow cylinder

b.) Clamp coupling: Clamp coupling is the modified form of
the muff coupling and also known as split muff coupling. Both
the shafts tightened together into the clamps, 4 or 8 nuts are
used to tight the shaft into the split muffs.

c.) Flange coupling: As name implies flange coupling has
flanges for the joining of both the shafts. It is another
type of rigid coupling so all the conditions are also
applicable here like proper alignment of both the shafts
and connection should not have any kind of vibrations

7 Gear coupling :
A gear coupling is a mechanical device for
transmitting torque between two shafts that
are not collinear. It consists of a flexible joint
fixed to each shaft. The two joints are
connected by a third shaft, called the spindle. ...
The gear teeth in a gear coupling have high
backlash to allow for angular misalignment.

This type of couplings uses 3 different
size springs fitted inside each other to allow for
high misalignment. The spring coupling can have
many different hubs or flanges fitted to the ends
and are available in a verity of different lengths

9 Tyre coupling :
Tyre Couplings are highly elastic, lubrication
free couplings that tolerate large amounts of
misalignment in all planes as well as offering
simple installation and inspection
As tyre couplings are flexible, they can
compensate for significant angle errors and
have a vibration and impact-damping effect.
They are also suitable for dirty environments,
for example for those contaminated by oil or
grease.

A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener used to
join two plates together. Because they’re
permanent in nature, their joints are similar to
those of adhesive or welded joints. They’re very
strong.

side of the material being riveted.

the heads and the purpose for which they are
employed. Generally the following types of rivet
heads are used:
Button head
This type of rivet has a
hemispherical head, widely
used in machine riveting as
well as in boiler and
structural works.

This head is chiefly used when
restricted space permits only
hand hammering.
Cone head
This kind of head provides
maximum strength and

Counter-sunk head
This type of head remains within the plate and
does not project above the surface. This is
mainly used in ship building.

Following are the two types of riveted joints,
depending upon the way by which the plates are
connected;
Lap joint
A lap joint is that in which one plate overlaps the
other and the two plates are then riveted
together.
The major two types of lap joints are explained
as under;
Single riveted Lap joint
When the joint is made with only one row of
rivets, it is known as single riveted lap joint.

Chain Riveting:
Riveting in which the rivets in rows along
the seam are set one behind the other.

Zig Zag Riveting:
Rivets set in a zigzag pattern, so spaced
that the rivets in one row are opposite the
centres of the spaces of the adjoining
rows.

Single riveted single cover butt
joint:
In this type more than one rivet are fixed
along a single row typically in a lap joint,
while in a butt joint the rows may appear
from both the upper and the lower surfaces.

called double riveted butt joint
