What is the policy issue?
The policy issue at hand is the effects associated with the opioid crisis in the state of
Florida. Every two hours someone overdoses from a prescription drug in Florida.
Researchers have not announced increases in the number of Americans who regularly
suffer from chronic pain, yet the annual number of prescriptions for opioid-based
painkillers jumped by four hundred percent from 1999-2013. Although the rise of
painkiller prescriptions was not evenly distributed among the United States, Florida was
one of the states that experienced the largest increase in prescription drug use. In 2010,
roughly ninety percent of the top opioid-prescribing doctors were located in Florida. By
2011, Florida’s rate of painkiller prescriptions was more than ten times higher than
any other state in the country. In May of 2017, this officially led Florida Governor
Rick Scott to declare a public health emergency in the state. Opioid addiction is not
simply a public policy issue in Florida, it is a public policy epidemic.
Why is it a public policy issue?
The opioid addiction crisis in Florida is a public policy issue due to the breadth of the
population that is affected by the issue. It is a problem that requires government
interference in order to solve, and taking immediate steps to address the issue is in the
best interest and well-being of the public.
What are the dimensions of the issue?
The dimensions associated with the opioid epidemic in Florida are complex and vast. The
spanning demographic of those affected by the opioid crisis is what makes it so difficult
to combat. It affects the uncle who just broke his arm after falling on the job; the high
school soccer player who broke his leg sliding in a match; and the sister or girlfriend who
had an operation to remove their wisdom teeth. The opioid epidemic affects a
demographic that is not usually accustomed or predisposed to having such problems,
making it harder for those who need help to ask for it. These defined social
characteristics exacerbate the complexities of the issue.

It is a social and economic problem that affects individuals of all ages, races,
nationalities, and income levels on a macro level throughout the state.
Problem Location:
The opioid addiction spans throughout the entire state of Florida, with a slightly higher
increase of opioid addiction rates in the southern part of the state.

As the research indicates, the epidemic in Florida is increasing in intensity on a yearly
basis and led the state to formally declare a public health emergency in 2017. It is

The consensus of the American security experts interviewed for the documentary is that climate changes are occurring and that a certain amount of change is already built in and will continue to occur over the course of our lifetimes.
Many places in the documentary describe large-scale displacements of people due to changing climate factors where millions and tens of millions of people have been forced to re-locate to secure food and water. The experts unanimously point out the de-stabilizing effects of these mass migrations for the countries who receive them.

What is the policy issue?
The policy issue at hand is the effects associated with the opioid crisis in the state of
Florida. Every two hours someone overdoses from a prescription drug in Florida.
Researchers have not announced increases in the number of Americans who regularly
suffer from chronic pain, yet the annual number of prescriptions for opioid-based
painkillers jumped by four hundred percent from 1999-2013. Although the rise of
painkiller prescriptions was not evenly distributed among the United States, Florida was
one of the states that experienced the largest increase in prescription drug use. In 2010,
roughly ninety percent of the top opioid-prescribing doctors were located in Florida. By
2011, Florida’s rate of painkiller prescriptions was more than ten times higher than
any other state in the country. In May of 2017, this officially led Florida Governor
Rick Scott to declare a public health emergency in the state. Opioid addiction is not
simply a public policy issue in Florida, it is a public policy epidemic.
Why is it a public policy issue?
The opioid addiction crisis in Florida is a public policy issue due to the breadth of the
population that is affected by the issue. It is a problem that requires government
interference in order to solve, and taking immediate steps to address the issue is in the
best interest and well-being of the public.
What are the dimensions of the issue?
The dimensions associated with the opioid epidemic in Florida are complex and vast. The
spanning demographic of those affected by the opioid crisis is what makes it so difficult
to combat. It affects the uncle who just broke his arm after falling on the job; the high
school soccer player who broke his leg sliding in a match; and the sister or girlfriend who
had an operation to remove their wisdom teeth. The opioid epidemic affects a
demographic that is not usually accustomed or predisposed to having such problems,
making it harder for those who need help to ask for it. These defined social
characteristics exacerbate the complexities of the issue.
Problem Type & Scale:
It is a social and economic problem that affects individuals of all ages, races,
nationalities, and income levels on a macro level throughout the state.
Problem Location:
The opioid addiction spans throughout the entire state of Florida, with a slightly higher
increase of opioid addiction rates in the southern part of the state.
Problem Intensity:
As the research indicates, the epidemic in Florida is increasing in intensity on a yearly
basis and led the state to formally declare a public health emergency in 2017. It is
imperative this issue is solved as quickly as possible and will only continue to worsen as
additional years go by without concrete and immediate action.

The consensus of the American security experts interviewed for the documentary is that climate changes are occurring and that a certain amount of change is already built in and will continue to occur over the course of our lifetimes.
Many places in the documentary describe large-scale displacements of people due to changing climate factors where millions and tens of millions of people have been forced to re-locate to secure food and water. The experts unanimously point out the de-stabilizing effects of these mass migrations for the countries who receive them.
Do we have an ethical obligation to assist people caught up in these large-scale movements of people to help them secure the basic necessities of food, water, and a secure way of life. Why or why not?

Group work has benefits and liabilities. EVERYONE assigned to a CLC is expected to equally participate in the work in terms of time and quality of effort. Each participant has strengths and it is reasonable to apportion the work to make best use of this. Some are natural leaders. Our strengths can be our greatest liabilities: No one wants to be bossed around no matter how skilled the boss is. Honest communication is critical to effective group work. The best way to avoid conflict is to set very clear expectations up front. Then, if someone does not do what is expected him/her, he/she can be referred to the original agreement rather than have the confrontation become personal.

CLC Project Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to critically analyze a health care issue through the focus of major concepts from each Topic. There are six components to this assignment after the CLC agreement is signed and the topic is identified. It is not expected that every member of the CLC group will contribute to each assignment, but that assignments will be divided fairly and equally among the group. The color of an artwork can effect my feelings or moods by the warmth or coolness of the colors and the lightness or darkness of the tones of colors. For example, art that includes dark tones of red, orange and yellow can remind someone of burning flames and could cause someone to feel uneasy or even anxious. If this color scheme were brighter toned, it may remind someone of the fall season and it could cause excitement and joy. Artwork with darker tones of green, blue and purple could remind someone of a rainstorm and cause them to feel depressed, whereas a work with lighter tones of this color scheme could remind someone of calming ocean waves and make them feel at peace. I would personally use color and composition in art to provoke a calming response because I tend to enjoy artwork that makes me feel calm and peaceful. I would use bright tones of cool colors along with white, cream colors, and even some light gray shades to evoke a laid-back feeling to the piece. I would also not use any sharp edged shapes and lines and i would use a more rounded technique to whatever type of art I would create in order to make the piece easy to look at and in turn make the viewer feel at ease.
This piece of artwork I have included is one of the canvas prints I have hanging up in my room. I don't know who it was created by since it was just something I bought from a popular store a long time ago, but it is one of my favorite pieces ever and if I had the means (or the talent) to create something like this, I would! I would make something like this because it has bright tones of cool colors like blue and purple and bits of bright pink and white, which are colors that bring me peace and make me think of things like ocean waves over a surfer. I like that it makes me imagine the surfer instead of a surfer being included in the work. I would also create this sort of piece because there are minimal harsh or pointed lines and shapes in it, and it flows effortlessly from one end of the canvas to the other.

Because of the long colonial history of Filipinos and the highly Americanized climate of postco-
lonial Philippines, many scholars from various disciplines have speculated that colonialism and its
legacies may play major roles in Filipino emigration to the United States. However, there are no
known empirical studies in psychology that specifically investigate whether colonialism and its
effects have influenced the psychological experiences of Filipino American immigrants prior to their
arrival in the United States. Further, there is no existing empirical study that specifically investigates
the extent to which colonialism and its legacies continue to influence Filipino American immigrants’
mental health. Thus, using interviews (N ! 6) and surveys (N ! 219) with Filipino American
immigrants, two studies found that colonialism and its consequences are important factors to
consider when conceptualizing the psychological experiences of Filipino American immigrants.
Specifically, the findings suggest that (a) Filipino American immigrants experienced ethnic and
cultural denigration in the Philippines prior to their U.S. arrival, (b) ethnic and cultural denigration
in the Philippines and in the United States may lead to the development of colonial mentality (CM),
and (c) that CM may have negative mental health consequences among Filipino American immi-
grants. The two studies’ findings suggest that the Filipino American immigration experience cannot
be completely captured by the voluntary immigrant narrative, as they provide empirical support to
the notion that the Filipino American immigration experience needs to be understood in the context
of colonialism and its most insidious psychological legacy— CM.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
