This document presents a network monitoring system for high availability infrastructure. The system uses Nagios to monitor servers, services, and system metrics. It also uses Snort as an intrusion detection and prevention system. The network architecture includes Pound for load balancing, Nagios for monitoring, Snort for intrusion detection, and bastion hosts for security. The system aims to identify and resolve infrastructure problems before affecting business processes.

2. INTRODUCTION
Network management refers to the activities, methods, procedures and
tools that pertain to the operation, administration, maintenance and
provisioning of a network.
Network monitoring system is said to be the subset of the functions
involved in network management.
3. OBJECTIVE
This project aims to plan and implement a system designed from the
start to monitor a high availability infrastructure network and
includes all tools in a single extendable system.
By using today’s technologies and making good design decisions,
this project aims to build a unified and a new network monitoring
system that is easy to configure, maintain and use for the network
administrator.
4. SCOPE
• The scope of this project will focus on the Network Monitoring system
we have used for monitoring the high availability infrastructure using
Nagios and Snort.
6. POUND
• Pound is a very powerful reverse proxy server, load balancer and
HTTPS front-end for web servers. Pound was developed to enable
distributing the load among several Web-servers and to allow for a
convenient SSL wrapper for those Web servers that do not offer it
natively.
7. NAGIOS
• Nagios is the industry standard in the IT infrastructure monitoring
Nagios is a powerful monitoring system that enables organizations to
identify and resolve IT infrastructure problems before they affect critical
business processes. It can monitor applications, services, operating
systems, network protocols, system metrics and infrastructure
components with a single tool.
8. SNORT
Snort is a free and open source network intrusion prevention system
(NIPS) and network intrusion detection system (NIDS) created by Martin
Roesch in 1998. It uses a rule-based detection language as well as various
other detection mechanisms and is highly extensible.
9. BASTION HOST
A bastion host is a computer that is fully exposed to attack. The system is on
the public side of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), unprotected by a firewall
or filtering router. Frequently the roles of these systems are critical to the
network security system. Generally, the firewalls and routers are configured
as bastion hosts. The bastion hosts are deliberately exposed to potential
hackers to both delay and facilitate tracking of attempted break-ins.
10. FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS
The scope of the project can be extended to a WAN network. The monitored
information can be used to managing the network efficiently. Intrusion
prevention system (IPS) can also be implemented to protect the network
from intrusion more effectively.
11. THANK YOU
Conclusion:
•The Network Monitoring System will serve three purposes.
1. Monitor the connectivity status of servers and their services,
2. Maintain logs of these status events and changes, and
3. Notify the appropriate individual when a service is
unavailable.
