A brief biography
Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910 and baptised on 27 August
1910 in the town of Skopje, Macedonia. However, she always wrote her birthday as 27 August
because to her, the day of her baptism was always more important than the day of her birth.
Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute
around the world. She spent many years teaching in India, where she founded the Missionaries of
Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need.
After several years of deteriorating health, where she suffered from heart, lung and kidney
problems, Mother Teresa died aged 87 on September 5 1997.

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born August 26, 1910 in Skopje, in Macedonia. Her childhood was
comfortable and prosperous due to her father's success. Her father encouraged his children to be
generous and compassionate to those less fortunate. Her mother was very religious and she took the
children to morning mass. Agnes often helped her mother deliver parcels of food and money to the
poor and prayed with the whole family every evening. The family's life changed dramatically after
their father's death, when Agnes was 9. Although now poor themselves, they continued to help those

nun who was born on 26 August 1910, in Skopje. Agnes was raised as a strong Catholic in her
faith, by her parents, Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu. Her father Drane, a well–respected local
businessman, died when she was eight years old, leaving her mother Nikola, to open a clothing
business to support the family. After spending her teenage years deeply involved in church and

donating clothes, or volunteering at a soup kitchen, or something big such as traveling to a third
