Indonesia marked 2017 as the first Menstrual Hygiene Day in the country. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education supported campaigns organized by several organizations to raise awareness about menstruation and make information about it more accessible. The campaign used the hashtag #MenstruasiBukanTabu which means "menstruation is not a taboo" in English. It aimed to reduce the stigma around menstruation and encourage open discussion of the issue. Various online and offline activities were carried out across the country as part of the campaign.

2017
(MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY 2017)
Indonesia marked 2017 as their first time, celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day. Ministry of Health and Ministry of
Education and Culture showing their full commitment in the taboo issue of menstruation by supporting the campaign
along with other organization working on the issue: Plan International Indonesia, SNV, Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI),
GIZ Fit for Schools, SPEAK Indonesia and UNICEF, under an independent coalition named WASH Network.
#MenstruasiBukanTabu or #MenstruationIsNotATaboo in English, is the official hashtag used
throughout the campaign of MH Day 2017. The idea behind the hashtag selection was how menstruation
had been seen as a taboo topic which might lead to bullying, un-involvement (social exclusion), myth
practicing, limited participation and lack of correct information. With the hashtag, the campaign
wanted to raise the societies’ awareness of the need for everyone to understand menstruation
and having the information about menstruation accessible and open to being discussed.
