1. (1) This is one of our production logos this one is one I created using
SerifMoviePlus X6. This was based on the logo for MARVEL’s production
company which is a flicking comic book with text added over the top. I
have created a post on how I did this logo.
(2) The next is another production company logo, this is from the ones we
had our target audience select. I created it on SerifDrawPlus X5. It will
appear on the beat of the drum and then fade out.
(3) This is another production company logo which was selected by our
target audience using SerifDrawPlus X5. This also appeared on the beat
of the drum and then faded out.
(4) The next one is a very simple screen, plain and black with the word
“presents on” in the font we chose, introducing the font which will be
used throughout the sequence. This plain screen helps the audience to
take in the frames which have just passed and drag out the tense
moment until the audience see the first video shot of the opening
sequence. This is when the diegetic comes in to form a sound bridge,
this also prepares the audience for the video.
(5) This shot is the first one of actual video footage which we filmed. It is a
hand held panning shot of the trees from a low angled shot. This allows
the audience to take in the full extent of the woods. We focused the
camera so that the tree branches form silhouettes against the sky. This
makes the overall image appear darker and therefore more eerie adding
to the horror element of the movie. This non diegetic soundtrack placed
alongside this emphasises this as it sounds scary and unnerving.
Commonly the first shots of an opening sequence are establishing shots,
our opening sequence follows this. However, normally the establishing
takes the for, of a long shot or extreme shot of the setting. However we
have used a medium long shot which does not show the entire setting
and only a part of it. Using the editing software on SerifMoviePlus X6 I
added more shadows to the video to make the lighting more low key
and to emphasise how dark and eerie to opening sequence is going to
be. As this is the first part of the opening sequence the audience will see
we need to make it as eye catching as possible so that the audience will
want to continue watching the opening sequence.
2. (1) The next shot is a tilt down a tree. This is also done in a similar style to the
first shot. It also forms silhouettes against the sky to make it look more
eerie. This is also done to show the setting off more.
(2) We have a final shot of the silhouettes of trees. This solidifies the setting,
adding one final shot to show off where out opening sequence will be
taking place.
(3) The next series of shots are introducing the character. We placed the
camera on a tripod and focused it on the leaves in the foreground. This
created a good area to place the credits on. When we visited the place
where we wished to film our opening sequence this framed area really
caught our attention which is why we chose to use it within our sequence.
The framing really highlights the character making her stand out from her
surroundings. We chose to include this as a character introduction shot is a
very important part of the opening sequence, having her introduced on a
long shot helps to reveal the whole character from head to foot. Therefore
we can see her costume and all the contribution factors towards her
character.
(4) The next shot is a mid shot of her walking over a fallen branch. We chosen
this to help focus in on her red cape as it is a man part of both her
character and the plot line. It also shows the bright contrast of the cape
against the dark coloured background. The focus on the feet also shows the
sense of journey which is associated in fantasy films as they have a sense of
adventure. This shot also helps to express a sense of the characters
individuality as she travels alone through the wood showing her innocence
as a character. We emphasised the colour contrasts using the editing
software on the programme to emphasise the contrast in colour, this also
made the video darker overall to emphasise the genre of dark fantasy as
the videos appear darker using low key lighting. We also added title credits
over the top so that they appeared to be imprinted on the fallen log to tie
them into part of the setting, this also helps to add to the realism of the
credits to help them not take away from the overall setting.
(5) The next shot is a continuation of the 3rd shot. This expresses the repetition
of her journey through the forest and how long her walk is taking her.
3. (1) This shot is a close up of the characters feet. This again
emphasises the idea of journey which is a convention of
fantasy films. It also focuses on the conditions of the setting,
from this shot the audience can automatically understand
that it is based around the colder, wetter months as the
ground is more muddy. This uses the idea of pathetic fallacy,
as wet and cold represent horror and the foreboding that
something bad is going to happen.
(2) This is a continuation of the shot before, this emphasises the
sense of journey more.
(3) The next shot shows a mid shot of the main character
walking past a tree and brushing her hand across the tree.
This was filmed using a hand held shot. We chose to use a
hand held shot here to emphasise the element of realism.
Many fantasy films have to become believable as they are
about the supernatural. Hand held shots are a great way to
achieve this as it adds them idea that someone could be
filming this and therefore makes it look more realistic.
(4) We chose to cut out the next scene which was purely a shot
of some of the trees. We cut this out as we felt we were
being to repetitive with out shots and this would become
boring for the audience as the idea of repetition can become
dull and not exciting.
(5) We instead continued onto the next frame of the movie. This
time we used a tripod to maintain the stillness of the camera
so that the filming does not appear messy or unprofessional
and therefore adds an element of precision to our work. We
focuses the camera specifically on the red of Little Red Riding
Hood’s cloak as this is one of the main elements of the shot
and making it stand out against the background is vital in
emphasising her character.
4. (1) This is a close up of the characters face. This helps to introduce the
character as we have not actually seen a close up of her face until this
point. This shot helps to also introduce the actor who is playing this
character as we can both see her face and a title which is placed next
to the shot of the character’s face. This is something which appears in
a lot of opening sequences as actor’s manager will pay extra for an
actor’s name as it helps to promote the actor. The close up also shows
the character looking over her shoulder shows that something is
following her and she has notice, it also shows how on edge she is as a
character. This emphasises her vulnerability as a character as she is
nervous that she is being followed. After looking over her shoulder
she runs away. We also slowed this down to make here look more
elegant while running adding to her delicacy as a character.
(2) The next frame is an overlap over the previous image through an
extended fade between the two shots. This again adds to the delicacy
of the character. This also emphasises the bright red of the characters
cape and adds to the sense of her long journey through the wood to
reach her destination. Fades are very rare within movies as they do
not add continuity to movies however in opening sequences they are
commonly used as it adds a more arty abstract nature to the
sequence.
(3) The next shot is a close up of some cleaves which travels upwards the
show more of the setting. This has been used as a break from the
action to explore the setting more. The camera is hand held to show
the possible presence of someone hiding behind the leaves watching
the setting for Little Red Riding Hood. It also helps the audience to
noticeably pick out all of the smaller details of the setting adding to
the realism of it.
(4) This shot shows a mid shot of the character running past a tree and
brushing her hand across it as she looses her balance and then
continues to run. It has again been set into slow motion to emphasise
that she is elegant adding to the idea that she is an innocent
character, this innocence is also expressed through the white colour
in her dress which connotes innocence. We placed the credits in the
corner so that they were noticeable but did not detract from the
overall image.
(5) This next shot is a close up of her hand brushing over the tree, it also
brings the audiences attention that there are claw marks in the tree, this
connotes danger and the disruption of the setting acting as
foreshadowing that something bad had happened within this setting. This
has been set in slow motion again to help the audience to make sure they
see the claw marks on the tree. Her hand brushing over there's
emphasises that something is going to happen to her which is associated
with the claw marks, emphasising that she has no idea what could happen
at any moment.
5. (1)This shot is just the continuation of the shot
before the close up. This just shows her
leaving the frame, still running this creates a
smooth transition into the next frame. It also
emphasises how scared she is as she is still
running, emphasising her vulnerability as a
character.
(2)The next shot is just a close up we inserted of
a low angled shot looking up at a leaf on the
tree. This again creates a break from the
action on the opening sequence helping to
emphasise the setting, it also helps the
reality of the setting as it shows how
everything is exactly how you would find it in
a real forest.
These two shots were not
part of our original
storyboard but we added
them in afterwards and
therefore added in images
and information on the
two shots.
6. (1) This shots shows again a small attention to detail within the setting. It shows
a shot of some berries hanging from a branch. The connotation of berries is
that they are dangerous as many berries within the wild are poisonous . This
creates a sense of foreboding as the character nears this shot and by
extension is nearing something bad. The shot is also accompanied with
some credits, we tried to make sure the credits did not conflict with the
video in this shot and therefore placed them the opposite side to the berries
to make sure they did not detract from the image of the berries. The wind is
slowing the berries around quite a bit and so emphasises that the character
is traveling through bad weather conditions which furthers her vulnerability
as a character.
(2) The next shot was aimed to shock the audience. It contains a row of cup
cakes. They contrast against the eerie background, it represents the
characters innocence and childish nature. It is also part of the original story
that Little Red Riding Hood was taking cakes and wine to visit her grandma.
The cupcakes also give a sense of the plot as this may give the audience
some kind of understanding about where the character is going. We
presented it through a pan close up to reveal the line of cupcakes to the
audience.
(3) This shot is also a close up of the cupcakes although this is a still shot. In the
background we see the character walking past the row of cupcakes. She is
now walking and therefore does not seem as worried as before, this links
into the visual of the cupcakes as they represent innocence instead of
having a darker meaning. Two sets of credits appear within this shot,
appearing over the cupcakes , this makes them look like they are part of the
sequence and they actually blend in to the scene instead of just looking like
something out of place within the scene.
(4) The next shot is a close up of a tree with the main character coming from
behind the free to rest against it as she has been walking and running for a
long time and so appears our of breath. We moved the camera slightly to
make the audience still know there is an element of tension even though
she has stopped running.
(5) This is paired by a mid shot of the same element, the character resting on a
tree but still looking edgy as if she is still frightened of whatever she saw
before. This makes the audience want to know what she saw and therefore
will want to continue watching. This shot was handheld to add the element
of edginess to the shot. The audience really get a sense of what the
character is feeling as they can see close up in her face what she is feeling.
This emphasises the characters vulnerability in this situation.
7. (1) The next shot is a hand held point of view shot. We had no specific
movement for this shot as we wanted it to look as realistic that it was a
character sneaking up on Little Red Riding Hood. We see the glimpses of
the red cloak through the tree which connotes that Little Red Riding Hood
is in danger as red is used to represent danger. The character sneaking up
on Little Red Riding Hood instantly connotes an “evil” character as they
are sneaking up behind her to possibly try to harm her. This makes the
audience tense as they have no idea what is going to happen to this
character. This is emphasised also as the soundtrack becomes much more
tense.
(2) The next shot is an extreme close up of the character’s eyes. Extreme
close ups are usually used to show a characters emotion and here does
not break this rule. The character looks frightened as she looks over her
shoulder towards the source of the noise. Her eyes widen and the
audience will feel instantly worried and on edge for her character as they
have no idea what is going to happen to her. We enhanced the shadows
on this shot to show the difference between the darker and lighter parts
of her face.
(3) The next shot is an over the shoulder close up of her looking behind her
at whatever was sneaking up on her and obviously made some kind of
noise. This also has a credit on it, we were really worried this credit would
detract from the overall sequence but the audience said it looked fine and
the title still seemed to fit into the opening sequence. The camera is again
shaky to show the build of tension on this scene.
(4) The next shot is another hand held point of view shot although this takes
the form of Little Red Riding Hood’s view point. She is breathing heavily
as we can see through the up and down movement of the camera as she
looks at the trees. This can either emphasise her fear or that she has been
running for a while emphasising the idea that she is in a lot of danger as a
character. The colourisation is also very dark and we cannot see the
character who was sneaking up on her adding to the element of mystery.
(5) The next shot opens a new sequence of the action. It is a close up of a log
with the character in a mid shot running towards the camera and then
falling over. We slowed this down so that they audience can see her fall
and her hand hit the log to stop herself from completely falling. We set
the camera on a low down tripod to prevent it from getting muddy.
8. (1) The next shot is again another over the shoulder point of view to show what the
character is looking at. She is standing up revealing blood on her hand off of the
branch. Blood has strong connotations of danger and foreboding as if something
bad has happened here adding to the audience’s fear towards the character. The
camera slowly focuses on her hand covered in blood, this is meant to represent
her realisation about what is on her hand. The slow fade makes it more dramatic
as we can see that she is shocked about what it is. This is also emphasised
through the fact it is a point of view shot as the audience may be able to imagine
they are in the characters position adding to the elements of fear.
(2) The next shot is a close up of a smashed wine bottle covered in red liquid. This
liquid is wine but is supposed to remind the audience of blood thus adding to the
element of horror within the opening sequence. This is from the original story as
Little Red Ridding Hood was taking wine to visit her grandma. This contrasts with
the images of cakes as the bottle will be smashed and covered in the red wine
which will look strangely like blood reflecting the violent nature of the movie. The
bottle could have also been used as a weapon to hurt someone and thus adds to
the element of mystery and that something bad has happened and something
even worse is going to happen. I have also edited the credits over the top which
do not detract from the shot as they are not place over the glass bottle but
instead next to it.
(3) The next shot is of another group of smashed glass similar to that before it.
(4) This shot is of a cupcake, instead of the clean cupcakes of before this one has
dropped in the mud and therefore expresses the changing tone of the opening
sequence, we are no longer reflecting on the innocence if the scene but the
destruction of innocence. This also brings forth foreboding that something bad is
going to happen to the character.
(5) This shot is very picturesque, contrasting with the shots before hand. They
contain the credits of vital people in the making of the movie. The sun in the
background connotes that we are nearing the end of the opening sequence and
that we many soon be enlightened with the knowledge of who is chasing the
main character. This builds tension in the audience as by this point they will really
want to know what is chasing her. Many of the audience who we got to watch
out opening sequence said that by this point they were on the “edge of their
seat” waiting for a climaxing point of the sequence.
9. (1) Here we have a really long edit of a hand held shot of a point of view
shot of someone chasing the main character through the woods to
an opening in the woods. This is very tense as we can see the
desperation of Little Red Riding Hood as she runs away from
whoever is chasing her, this will really put the audience on edge as
they fear for her character as she is chased through the woods.
However, there is a sense of release as she runs into the light as light
connotes hope and security as if she is now safe as she enters the
field as she is no longer in the dark scary woods. We can also see
glimpses of her red cloak which connote that she is still in danger as
she runs as red connotes danger.
(2) This shot is a long mid shot showing her running into the field. This
shows that it is now around sunset. The bright coloured grass
contrasts with the dark greens of the woods before showing she is
now secure and safe. This allows the audience to relax slightly but
they still anticipate the presence of another character.
(3) The next shot is a low angled shot. This is to contrast with the idea
that our character is venerable as low angled shots are used to show
characters who have power. The idea of this is to show that our
character has some kind of power and confidence now she is no
longer in the woods. These are all very fast paced edits to show the
last flourish of the opening sequence to build the tension to capture
the audiences attention for the title which will lead onto the film.
(4) The next shot is a silhouette of the characters head against the
sunset. This causes a beautifully framed shot. This helps bring forth
the Directors name who is possibly one of the most important
people within the sequence. She is looking over as if she is
wondering where she needs to go next which makes the audience
want to continue watching so they can find out where she is going to
go.
(5) We are then shown the final shot of the opening sequence which is
an extreme close up of the character looking across the field,
preparing to continue with her journey and therefore continue the
opening sequence into the movie. The title of the film fades in which
tells the audience that the actual movie is going to begin.
