Hammurabi’s Code was the first system of
law that we know of still in its complete
form.
Hammurabi’s Code laid out the law and
the corresponding punishment.
It is important because it influenced the
creation of law.
3. Prologue
The Code features an introduction that
states that the Gods had him write this
code to improve the land.
It also states all the good things that
Hammurabi did, while glorifying himself.
4. Hammurabi’s Laws
Hammurabi’s laws often had different
rules for men, women and slaves.
The codes were often violent and included
removal of body parts or death.
5. Why was it written?
King Hammurabi believed that the God’s
told him to write a system of law in order
to keep the people under control.
On the top of it, there is a picture of a god
giving a ring to King Hammurabi.

Hammurabi’s Code was located in the
middle of the city for everybody to see.
If everybody saw it, they would be more
likely to follow the laws.

Hammurabi’s Code included harsher
punishments to people of lower class.
It highlighted the differences between
social classes.
8. Epilogue
The Code ends with a long description of
who the Gods are, and what they do.
Hammurabi also states how what he has
done was right and how he was teaching
the people of the land a lesson.
