2. IMPORTANCE OF
ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
•The behavior of a building during earthquakes depends
critically on its overall shape, size and geometry, in addition to
how the earthquake forces are carried to the ground.
•The importance of the configuration of a building was aptly
summarized by Late Henry Degenkolb, a noted Earthquake
Engineer of USA, as:
“If we have a poor configuration to start with, all the
engineer can do is to provide a band-aid - improve a
basically poor solution as best as he can. Conversely, if we
start-off with a good configuration and reasonable framing
system, even a poor engineer cannot harm its ultimate
performance too much.”
3. ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
•Shape of structure.
•Co-ordination of shape and structural
system.
•Desirable versus those which must be
avoided.
4. SIZE OF BUILDINGS
•Tall buildings Horizontal
movement of the floors during ground
shaking is large.
•Short but very long buildings
damaging effects are many.
•Buildings with large plan area
excessive seismic force to be carried by
5.
6. HORIZONTAL LAYOUT OF BUILDINGS
• Buildings with simple geometry
performs well during
earthquake.
• Buildings with re-entrant
corners, like those U, V, H and
+ shaped in plan have
sustained
significant damage.
• Breaking complex buildings
like ‘L’ shape in two rectangle
7. VERTICAL LAYOUT OF BUILDINGS
• Bringing of forces from top of the buildings
along it’s height.
•Buildings with vertical setbacks (like the hotel
buildings with a few storey's wider than the
rest) cause a sudden jump in earthquake
forces at the level of discontinuity.
• Buildings resting on sloppy grounds have
various ill effects on the structure.
