7. Euclid ( 325 BC-265 BC ) : He was a teacher of
mathematics at Alexandra in Egypt. He collected
all the known work at that time and arranged it
in his famous treatise called elements. This
influenced the whole world’s understanding of
geometry for generations to come.
Euclid assumed certain properties which were
not to be proved. These were actually obvious
universal truth. These were of two types:
postulates and axioms.
• Assumptions specific to geometry are called
postulates.
• Assumptions used throughout mathematics and
not specifically linked to geometry are called
axioms.

9. Heron of Alexandria was the Greek Engineer and
Mathematician who derived the Heron’s formula. He
was an important geometer and worker in mechanics
who invented many machines including a steam
turbine. His best known mathematical work is the
formula for the area of a triangle in term of the lengths
its sides.
Amongst other things, he developed the Aeolipile, the
first known steam engine but it was treated as a toy.
He invented his rocket like device which used steam
for propulsion.
