3. THE VERB
• A verb is a word that tells or asserts
something about a person or thing
• Derived from the Latin word “verbum” i.e. a
word
• It is the most important word in a sentence.
e.g.
1. I am learning the piano.
2. The watch has been found.
4. A verb may tells us
• It tells what a person or thing does.
• It indicates what is to be done to a person or
thing
• It also indicates what a person or thing is.
• It is a word used to tell or assert something
about some person or thing

• The student kicked the football
• The girl yelled loudly

6. Transitive Verb
• The student kicked the football
• The action denoted by the verb kicked passes over
from the doer to the object.
• This type of verb where the action passes over is
called a Transitive Verb

• The ants fought the wasps
• The cannon shot sank the ship
• The driver started the train
• The horse kicked the trainer
• The boys were playing carrom
• The group sang the sonnet(song)

• An Action Verb tells exactly…”What is the
exact action that the subject is doing

10. Linking Verbs
• The verbs that connect the noun or the
adjective to the predicate
• Common Linking Verbs are
• Am/Is/are Was/Were Being/Been
11. Helping Verbs
• Helping Verbs help the main verb express the
tense and voice of the sentence
• Helping Verbs always need an action verb with
them
• Ramanuj will go to the railway station
helping action
12. • Adverbs are words that describe the actions or
describe the main verb
• Adverbs tell something more about the verb
or qualifies/describes the verb further.

• Adverbs of Time answers the question
WHEN??
• Adverbs generally end in “ly”
• Slowly, Today, Tomorrow, yesterday, now, then
14. Adverbs of Place
• Answers the question---Where??
• Here, there, somewhere, nowhere, far near,
up, down, sidewards
15. Examples of Adverb of Place
• I have misplaced my keys here yesterday
• The magician pulled out a rabbit out of
nowhere as he put his hand in the empty hat.

• Very, Quite, Hardly, Fairly, Radically, hardly,
extremely, nearly, are some of the commonly
used Adverbs to describe a degree.
17. Examples of Clause of Degree
• The government servants hardly go to the
office.
• The Final exams were extremely tricky
• Milkha Singh had nearly won the race before
he lost it.
• The arrival of Mahatma Gandhi radically
changed the scene of the Indian Indepence
movement.

• It answers the question---How Often???
• Words like Always, never, seldom, once,
usually, occassionally, frequently,
19. Examples of Adverb of Frequency
• Miss Demelo is usually on time at the office.
• The Professor never bothers to greet the
Principal.
• Mr. Ram has a bad habit of taking unplanned
leaves frequently.
• It is okay to have sweets once in a while
