Throughout recorded history, wars have been waged across almost every culture and continent.
However, despite the long and recurrent history of war, the way different societal groups perceive
and act towards conflict differs widely. The Battle of Iowa Jima took place close to the end of World
War II between the United States and Japan. The American marines invaded the island of Iowa Jima
on February 19 1945, in order to gain access to the island's airfields and create a base for attacking
mainland Japan. The battle proved to be a significant defeat for the Japanese with only 3216
survivors out of the initial 21000 soldiers. However, despite being heavily outnumbered and
suffering from a lack of food/supplies, the Japanese soldiers persisted their stand for 35 days. Letters

access to marine resources such as fishing. Fish also became a source of protein diet and economic

prevented or did the United States do everything they could to avoid the attack.
There were a number of conspiracy theories about the attack on Pearl Harbor, for example the

In 1936, Ishii's plan was approved by the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito. Shiro made his way to
Harbin; the process of Shiro's plan began immediately. Unit 731 was built in an isolated part of the
conquered empire of Manchuria in a small suburb called Pingfang in Harbin. Pingfang was home to
over 240,000 Chinese and around 81,000 foreigners. Shiro Ishii considered the people of China and

For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino–
Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino–Japanese war
nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to
constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun
to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence.
The First Sino– Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the
weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea
was already one of China 's most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic
positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology,
Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China.
Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued
the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries
by signing of the Li– Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894,
Kim Ok–kyun, a pro–Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and

Howard Ruff's newsletter recently in which he described a terrifying event... which, oddly enough,

the government–general of Korea (GGK) announced that twenty–year–old Korean men would be
conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. To promote Korean acceptance of
conscription, the Japanese encouraged assimilation of Koreans into Japanese culture and society.
This included learning Japanese and taking on a Japanese name. The attempts at assimilation and the
draft left Koreans wondering whether they would become full citizens or "remain second rate
subjects" after the war. Even Korean soldiers, who were supposedly equal to Japanese soldiers, were
left wondering about their position in Japanese society. Through an analysis of Kasayama
Yoshikichi's recount of "The Korean Guard," this paper argues that Kasayama reveals the nature of

Korean soldiers resisted towards the end of the war.

of the 600,000 people in China's capital city. The six–week rampage by the Japanese is now known
as the Rape of Nanking and the single worst atrocity during WWII era in either the European or
Pacific theaters of the war.
Before Nanking was invaded a tough battle in Shanghai began the war in the summer of 1937. The
Chinese put up a shocking battle against japan. This was slightly embarrassing to Japan because
they predicted that the would conquer all of China in only three months. The battle in Shanghai

Many filmed footage and photos taken by the Japanese to document the brutality. They show
smiling teenagers decapitating innocent civilians and POW soldiers, lifting their heads in triumph, or
use the living POWs as bayonet practice. Some show soldiers standing among a pile of bodies that
were mowed down by machine guns. Also there is a video of three POWs tied up, blind folded,
soaked with gasoline and burned alive, it showed them squirming while their flesh sizzles.

even pregnant woman were spared, in several occasions they were raped then had their bellies slit
open and the fetus torn out. Sometimes when the Japanese stormed the homes and encountered the
entire family, the soldiers would force the fathers rape their daughters, sons were forced to rape their
