Csr Reporting Implications For Barclays Banks...
6F6Z3007: Assignment 2: CSR reporting Implications for Barclays Banks Environmental Sustainability
Introduction
'Corporate social responsibility (CSR), broadly defined as the notion that companies should accompany the pursuit of profit with good citizenship
within a wider society, has become an increasingly prominent feature of business life over the last 10 to 15 years' (Sadler and Lloyd, 2009:613).
This quote from Sadler and Lloyd is a useful starting point in demonstrating the rapid rise and development of corporate responsibility. Global issues,
in an economic sense with the global financial crisis in 2008 and in an environmental sense with the threat of climate change have aided in bringing to
the fore a need for businesses and the corporate world to manage themselves and the services they offer in a more responsible and sustainable way. In
particular reference to the financial sector this has attempted to be achieved through global financial sustainability agreements such as the Equator
Principles. By entering into global agreements careful monitoring and reporting of a banks activities is required to create transparency in assessing
their contributions towards corporate social responsibility and the achievement of sustainable practices in the financial sector. One of the banks
currently signed up to the Equator principles is Barclays, as one of the largest global banks in the world with a 300 year history it is a company that
serves 48 million customers worldwide

Environmental Sustainability At The World, Massachusetts...
Introduction
Environmental sustainability is a subject that has seen an exponential rise in its importance and influence since the past few decades. Since 1970, when
this topic started gaining wide attention, several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability. These
organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or
local, have initiatives and goals that they follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the larger
and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
What is Environmental Sustainability?
Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This includes the air that we breathe which is constantly
getting polluted by several chemicals discharged into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as
well as the still present frontier attitude. Talking about the future, popular environmental activist David Suzuki once said, "We're in a giant car heading
towards a brick wall and everyone's arguing over where they're going to sit." The world for our future generations does not seem very promising, which
is why environmental sustainability initiatives are all the more important.
Findings and Discussion

Introduction
About the United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War, committed to providing the means to
help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting human beings all over the world (Wikipedia). The organization is
committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living
standards and human rights (Wikipedia). 'Ensuring environmental sustainability', climate change being one of the major factors, is one of the
millennium development goals of the UN. The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, along with many organizations/agencies under the
UN, collaboratively work towards achieving this goal.
About the Chosen Aspect of Study
'How does the United Nations support the millennium development goal of promoting environmental sustainability by limiting climate change in South
and North America?' This investigation shall focus on the previously mentioned question as this a very interesting topic to further research on, also as I
believe that the UN has played an enormous role in promoting environmental sustainability in South and North America, and therefore would make a
good topic to further research on. This topic is worthy of studying as by knowing of what many before us have done to protect and sustain the
environment, we can look into aiding the environment to a

Reflection Paper # 1
If out of the 17 U.N. Millennium Development Goals for 2030 could be achieved, I feel that ensuring environmental sustainability would be most
crucial. Environmental sustainability and development is necessary to reduce poverty and increase the wellbeing of not only today's people, but for
future generations.(1) These global environment isssues require a global solution. However inequality between countries creates environmental issues,
uneven development, and difficulty and finding solutions. (2)
I believe as humans we are dependent on the environment. Sustaining the environment to me trumpets all other goals the UN proposes to meet.
Ensuring environmental stability is the core that allows the other goals listed to be able to function. Finding a solution to poverty and hunger is a very
critical goal I would love to see met, but that cannot function without first providing a sound stable safe environment. Environmental sustainability is
intertwined with poverty, hunger, and disease. Climate changes and global poverty combined affect the people of the poor rural areas that are
dependent on natural resources for their survival and support to their families. How important can the issue of maternal health and universal education
be to the laymen of these rural areas, who are worried about providing their families next meal.
Ensuring environmental sustainability falls under goal 7. Four main targets are listed in

A Critical Appraisal Of Social And Environmental...
Introduction
Environmental and social sustainability is a growing concept, in the modern day business world. This essay will cover sustainability but particularly,
will cover the following: A critical appraisal of social and environmental sustainability, its importance related to issues that can affectcorporate social
responsibility. The essay will evaluate specific ideas; provide evidence to support the recommendation, using relevant academic books, journals and
articles where it is appropriate. Concluding this essay, there will be a critical appraisal of a company's annual reporting, that may contribute to
embedding sustainability in decision making, in the context of business practice.
1.1Sustainability A firm is legally a separate entity and it is treated as a citizen. Although it is controlled and directed by people, "Corporate
governance is the system by which companies are directed and controlled. Boards of directors are responsible for the governance of their
companies"(Financial Reporting Council, 2012). FRC corporate code tells us that the company is driven by the board and they are also responsible
for the effective running of the firm. This clearly states that the board owes the fiduciary duty of care to act in the best interest of the shareholders and
other stakeholders, as they are acting as agents on the behalf of the principal (shareholders). Stakeholders are all those who can affect or be affected by
the business activities. Rajan defines sustainability

Are Individual Consumers Primarily Responsible For...
Are individual consumers primarily responsible for environmental sustainability?
Introduction
Living on the Earth, it is important for each of the organizations as well as individuals to help with making it a better place to live. However for the
current time, environmental degradation is still one of the most threatening problems confronted with human beings. The carbon dioxide emission has
made the global warmth, which may cause the diminishing of lands where human beings could live on; air pollution has caused more diseases, climate
change has led to more serious problems in biodiversity which is important to form a balanced natural environment, water toxic pollution has reduced
the available access to clean water. In the everyday life of human beings, the unfavorable influences on the environment could be worse on condition
that environmental degradation is not paid with enough attention (Bare, 2014). For instance, the applying of cars, which would cause inevitable air
pollution and energy consumption, would add pressure for environmental protection (David and Michael, 2014). For the environmental sustainability,
the individual activities are essential, but the responsibility of individuals could not be described as primary as the roles of organizations are rather
important. This essay is going to talk about the responsibility of individual customers for environmental sustainability, as well as the responsibility of
organizations. To form the environmental

Environmental Sustainability At Three Wine Making...
Introduction
This report examines environmental sustainability at three wine making organisations. This is a qualitative research to explore how often the
organisations provide concern related with environmental sustainability issues of a wine production. Interviews have used to collect information about
environmental issues and activities to deal with the problems in the three companies. The interviews have produced amounts of contextual data that
should be analysed to get key information related with the aim of research. NVivo10 is used to analyse the information about what prominent issues of
the environment and effort to solve the problems in each organisation. Then, combining any significant issues across three organisations to conclude
their focus on dealing with environmental sustainability.
Result
Environmental issues
Analysis result shows that there are approximately eight environmental issues among the three organisations, such as water, climate change,
biodiversity, waste, energy, ecosystem benefits, soil health, and erosion. Each organisation has slightly different of main environmental issues.
Meanwhile, each organisation has different priority for each issues.
Figure 1 displays concerned issue of environment in three wine making organisations. The decision of concerned issue is based on the how many times
their mention the issues at the interview. Figure 1 depicts that water is the prominent environmental issue for all three organisations, but wine 1 give

Using Population Control to Achieve Environmental...
Environmental sustainability is when a person, community or area is able to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the
future. Overconsumption will lead to hardship in the future, and possibly to the destruction of the planet's finite resources; and if we continue using
our resources as at current rates, which have been estimated to be 4 planets worth of resources, this will be inevitable. Populations are all the
inhabitants of a specific area/country and this population can be controlled in various methods such as population policies, like the ones in China,
Kerala and France; as well as control via migration by putting on limits.
A population control method that has achieve environmental sustainability is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Canada has a fairly low population density of just 3.75 people per square kilometer and with high resources, Canada is
environmentally sustainable; some even say that Canada is under populated and therefore Canada is lenient on in migration.
Similarly to this, Thomas Malthus (1766–1834) had the theory that when population overshoots a certain point (usually food production) there will be
catastrophic effects. The club of Rome, in 1968 published a report called the 'limit of growth', which stated that population growth will lead to an
increase in food demand and this will eventually lead to resource exhaustion, which is obviously not environmentally sustainable. To prevent resource
exhaustion, the Club of Rome decided that we have to regulate population growth and reduce fertility– and that is what China's One Child Policy, and
Kerala's non–enforced population policy was aiming to do. Similarly, the anti–Malthusianist– Ester Boserup was a resource optimist, with research
based on studies of shifting cultivation. Her hypothesis was that population growth would result in an increase demand for food and to meet this
demand, improved agriculture productivity would be needed. A higher agricultural productivity means an increase in methods of agriculture like the
'slash and burn' technique, which often are not environmentally sustainable at all.
All these population / resource theories

Environmental Impacts Of The Sustainability Goals
In order for the sustainability goals to be successful and meaningful, the targets must be measurable. By nature, some of the targets are more
measurable than others. It is easy to measure those that are quantitative as the goals are very precise. Target 14.1, to reduce marine pollution of all
kinds can be measured by surveying micro–plastic concentrations in seawater and marine life (Global Ocean Commission 2). Similarly, the goal of
minimizing acidification can be measured by collecting pH samples (Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network 172) and
the conservation of coastal and marine areas can be measured by collecting data on marine protected areas (GOC 5). It is more difficult to measure
targets that are more broad and subjective. The success or failures of these targets are measured by monitoring programs, administering policies, law
enforcement and assessing the environmental impacts (4). For example, targets 14.7 and 14.9, which look at the economical benefits and subsidies are
measured by monitoring data and policies used in various countries. Likewise, target 14.12, to ensure full implementation of international law, is
measured by looking at the number of flag states and countries who have ratified laws (6). Some targets feature both precise and subjective indicators.
For instance, targets 14.4 and 14.6 which deal with the regulation of dangerous fishing practices can be measured by looking at the reported data of fish
tonnage within

The UK's economy relies on global trade and resources. Issues such as climate change and a growing world population mean there is more pressure on
energy, natural resources and the wider environment. A more efficient use of resources such as water, energy and natural resources directly benefits
businesses in the UK. Savings of up to ВЈ23 billion a year, reducing carbon emissions and more resilience to climate change and inflated prices of
supplies are a few benefits that have been anticipated.

Infection through cuts or abrasions, injection through sharp injuries within the waste, ingestion through hand to mouth contact and inhalation are four
main risks.
Hazardous waste poses more of a potential threat to health or the environment if not managed properly. This sort of waste should be stored so as to
prevent or control accidental release to air, soil, and water resources where possible.
We don't deal with hazardous waste as such, on a daily basis our waste consists of general and food waste. We have a company come to dispose of
our confidential waste but this doesn't pose potential risks as confidential waste consists of paper work, the worst thing that could happen would
probably be getting a paper cut.
Heavy lifting may come into it if there is a mass amount of waste to dispose of. This can cause pack pain if not lifted correctly. In the Old
Courthouse where I work, the bins are changed daily by the cleaner. The weight should never be too heavy as it would only be a day's worth and we
aren't an overly populated council building.

The University Of Regina's Environmental Sustainability
Introduction
The student and staff population of the University of Regina is soon going to surpass a population of 15,000 students. The growing population of the U
of R requires administrative and student action to maintaining environmental sustainability. It is crucial to its maintenance to implement environment
sustainability. Environment sustainability can be defined as taking responsible actions towards maintaining the environment and eliminating any type
of negative impacts that we produce to negate any environmental damages.
Summary
The University of Regina takes pride in supporting and taking a leadership role in initiatives that will benefit the environment. For instance, the U of R
shuts off the lights by 11 pm, as part of the light–off campaign (On the Way to Sustaining a Sustainable Campus, 2016). In some places around the
campus, such as the Riddell Centre, there are different containers for paper, bottles and garbage disposal. Categorizing waste and recycling maximizes
recycling potential, and minimizes waste output. Additionally, the on–campus residence there are communal garbage disposal room with large bins for
different kinds of waste and recycling such as milk bottle bins, garbage bag bins, recycling paper bins, bins for glass, and all flattened boxes to be
thrown in one big bin. Residents are encouraged to put their garbage in their respective spots.

Environmental Sustainability in the United State
Professor Timothy Oladunni

Environmental sustainability is the rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non–renewable resource depletion that can be continued
indefinitely. If they cannot be continued indefinitely then they are not sustainable (Daly 1990). It is a state in which the demands on the environment
can be met without reducing its capacity to allow all people to live well, now and in the future. The question here is whether the United States is
environmentally sustained, my answer would be yes, to the best of their ability. In order to do this, they are environmental sustainability laws in the
United States which include ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The goal of environmental sustainability is to conserve natural resources and to develop alternate sources of power while reducing pollution and harm to
the environment (Rinkesh 2009). Their mission is to promote sustainable engineered systems that supports human well–being and that are also
compatible with sustaining natural environmental systems in other words, environmental sustainability in the United States ensures that incorporating
preservation areas and contributing to the overall preservation of a different wetland area that the damage is balanced out. It argues that the local
economic benefits will lead to more funding to create environmental protection areas elsewhere.
Why is environmental sustainability important in the United States? Environmental sustainability in the United States is extremely important because
it sets a balance between the needs of a growing and changing population and the ability of natural resources to support growth. Environmental
sustainable helps support smart growth, retain residents in our county and preserve opportunities for future generations. Environmental sustainability is
important because humans tend to be bad at systems thinking. Environmental sustainability professionals are employed to help balance, or improve,

in tandem in order to achieve just sustainability. Building upon this point, Agyeman and Carter find it necessary to address the sustainability needs of
people beyond the conventional environmental focus. A fitting example of Carter and Agyeman's beliefs about justsustainability is the Sustainability in

Each site location has its pros and cons in terms of economic, environmental and social aspect of sustainability. Since this is a building site for
University of Calgary to showcase sustainability, it is important that the building itself is sustainable. Various of criteria will be set in correspondence
to these three aspects of sustainability to quantify the sustainable value of each site.
Environmental Sustainability
Figure 1. Site 1 Flood Zone and Green Area Figure 2. Site 2 Flood Zone and Green Area Figure 3. Site 3 Flood Zone and Green Area
Flood Zone
Flooding from the river is one of the key natural disaster that Calgary faces, hence, one of the major concerns of the sustainability of this building is
whether the site is situated within the flood zone. Per the Province of Alberta Flood Hazard Map (See Appendix A), the flood line of each location
is mapped in Figure 1, 2, and 3. From that, we can conclude that site 2 will not be affected by the flood, whereas site 1 is situated very close to the
flood line and site 3 completely overlaps with it, which may not be the optimal site.

Green Area
The quality of air and the accessibility to green area is a key factor to the environmental sustainability of this building. Areas of public parks and
green spaces are mapped in green in the figures above (1). Site 1 arguably has the least amount of green space. There are two city parks located within

Reflection On Environmental Sustainability
Introduction
This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered exploring the influences of these my life and how these have
altered my view on what is environmental sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will follow into reviewing my perspectives on
environmental sustainability and how these two experiences influenced this. To conclude a discussion on my role as a teacher and how this will impact
myself when in the classroom.
Part A
The first experience I had was travelling through an area called Baynton about 100kms north east of Melbourne early in 2009. It was about 6 weeks
after the Black Saturday bushfires devastated the whole region, driving through was incredibly eerie and unsettling. Everything was black and
charred, in the paddocks there was no grass, no fences, all the trees were burnt trunks, no foliage at all was present. There were no animals grazing in
the paddocks, no wildlife was visible and no green anywhere. Fire is a natural part of life as my friend told me that day, trees will grow again, fences
can be mended, the animals and wildlife will return. People are what matter, thankfully no one lost their lives in the region I travelled that day. Seeing
the devastation reminded me the power of nature and how there are still many natural occurrences that mankind cannot control or master. Speaking
with residents (personal communication, March, 2009), similar and consistent observations were made that bushfire

Environmental Sustainability : Carbon Emissions
Introduction
The world is starting to see the effects that carbon emissions, with the largest producer being China with 24.65% of the world emissions. Although
Australia isn 't as large as China we still produce 1.11% of the world 's emissions. Now people are starting to see the effects of the Carbon Emissions
and pollution is doing to the Earth.
Carbon Pollution
What exactly is Carbon Emissions? Carbon Emissions also known as Carbon Pollution, which is pollution through the production of Co2 (Carbon
Dioxide). With the increase production of carbon emissions from industrial activity and general car emissions is now start to harm the environment,
which is resulting in environmental disasters from rising sea levels from the melting of the ice caps. Another type of pollution is air pollutant, is any
air pollutant that is emitted into the air. Such pollutants can involve physical, chemical, biological, radioactive substances or matter. With the
increasing level of air pollutants is causing warming of the globe and low level thick smog covering major city worldwide.
Environmentally Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is defined as rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non–renewable resource depletion that can be
continued indefinitely. If the resource is not able to continue indefinitely then the resource is not sustainable.

Global Environmental Activism And Environmental...
Global Environmental Activism Vice President Joe Biden once said, "No fundamental social change occurs merely because government acts. It 's
because civil society, the conscience of a country, begins to rise up and demand– demand – demand change." For society to rise up and demand
change like Joe Biden is talking about there are ways to better understand what change needs to happen and how to put that change into motion,
especially with environmental sustainability. First there must be an understanding of what ecological crises are and how they are negative affecting the
earth while exploring how sustainability can help with these crises. Then to better understand sustainability one can explore sustainable practices
around the world through case studies and even local practices of sustainability. However one must understand the thought process behind sustainability
and how to make that work in favor of making change. This includes both the Dominant Social Paradigm and the New Ecological Paradigm and how
they both can be used to facilitate change. Once there is an understanding of the problem and a plan to fix it then the action must take place. While
action can take many different forms, for many people it is structured as environmental activism. To further study environmental activism once can use
organizations such as 350.org, Fossil Free, and The People 's Climate Movement to study how they are organized, their strategies, who is involved, and

Problem Facing the World Today There are thirty–four countries in the world that are both advanced agriculturally and predominantly Muslim. These
thirty–four Islamic nations account for about 21% of the world's land surface and about 15% of its cropped area. While the agricultural sector has
been a pivotal part of Islamic life for hundreds of years, the practice is becoming more and more difficult. In regards to agriculture today, Lynn White
states that "formerly man had been part of nature; now he was the exploiter of nature" (White 3). Due to a lack of environmental awareness, farmland
is prone to erosion, usable water is becoming more and more scarce, and the long–term agricultural potential in Islamic nations is decreasing
(Tutwiler). Muslims are actually well known for placing a high priority on the environment and conservation. In fact, the Islamic holy book, the Qu'ran,
states that "Humans, as God's successors on earth, should treat the natural environment with the respect and dignity God intended it to have" (Kaltner).

With humanities growing knowledge of skills and technology, we have been able to manipulate nature to meet the growing needs of humans. By doing
this humans have fished, gathered species, hunted for food, fuel, and shelter. Humans have domesticated plants and animals, cut forests, used anything
from fire to technological advancements to alter habitats, and have significantly changes chemical hydrological and geochemical cycles. As a result
humans do not reflect what life on earth is, but changes to landscape and sea reflect human culture. As species die, humans lose their food, medicines

As third world countries try to compete with their flourishing neighbors, earth's natural resources have been stressed to an unsustainable level which
poses two main problems. Humans moving from rural to urban areas of the country allow people to use resources that wouldn't have been available if
local sustainable lifestyles had been maintained. And second, as the human population drastically increases, resources needed per capita increases,
consequentially adding stress on the environment. 1 As need for resources increased, so did technologies in transportation, which allowed for extensive
logging in tropical rainforest. The degradation of such habitats continues to result in the loss of an enormous amount of species. Scarcity of natural
resources has posed a large problem not only on the earth, but has created conflict among countries. Disagreements according to the specific details of
environmental problems and how to solve them have created problems in international relations. The intractable difference between all countries who
express concern is their sovereignty. "The dominant tradition within International Relations is state–centric, centered around concepts of state
sovereignty and the beliefs that states are the primary actors in international affairs and that international affairs and international politics are largely
driven by states pressing their interest."2 Environmental problems usually affect more than one

neglectful actions towards nature, which brings up the idea if colleges should incorporate environmental sustainability into their curriculum to educate

The actions of people in their everyday lives has an impact on the environment in one way or another. Either by deciding to turn on one switch or by
utilizing slightly hotter water to shower than usual, you're utilizing resources that are extracted from the environment. How David Orr said it "All
education is environmental education." What he meant was that no matter what we study, it ties into our environment and how we live. By studying
microeconomics you study whether you're making a profit by analyzing which is greater, the social benefit or social cost. If a company is producing
pollution that is contaminating the drinking water, it doesn't matter if you're making a profit, the social cost is greater than the marginal private benefit
for the government would impose taxes to limit on how much you're producing. All this goes to show that it doesn't matter if you're studying areas that
doesn't even have to do with the environment such as economics, it still ties into our surroundings which is why one needs to include environmental
sustainability. Another evidence to why environmental sustainability should be included into the college curriculum is because "knowledge carries
with it the responsibility to see that it is well used in the world" (Orr). What this means is that by being educated

will cover the following: A critical appraisal of social and environmental sustainability, its importance related to issues that can affectcorporate social
responsibility.

Sustainability : Sustainability And Environmental...
Sustainability is a topic that has become very important in recent years. Sustainability is defined as, "the ability to continue a defined behavior
indefinitely." ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014)
There are three pillars that make up overall sustainability: social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Social sustainability focuses on all
human needs being met and a society functioning properly indefinitely. Economic sustainability is achieving a certain level of economic success
indefinitely. It also involves having an extremely low percent of people living below the poverty line, which relates to social sustainability.
Environmental sustainability is described as, "the rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non–renewable resource depletion that
can be continued indefinitely." ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014) Achieving environmental sustainability
will positively affect the social and economic aspects. These three categories are directly related to each other, and to truly reach complete
sustainability each of the group's needs must be met. There are many ways for individuals, groups, companies, and societies to help make a difference
in reaching this goal. Environmental issues are currently very prominent in the US and other countries. There are countless activists and researchers
doing everything they can to make a difference. Most businesses, like

Starbucks Environmental Sustainability Case Study
Despite Starbuck's natural efforts on trying to carry out sustainable business, must work towards improving/ reducing its carbon footprint on the planet.
Starbucks, a multi–billion dollar company, containing over 16,850 stores in 40 countries (Lapore), follows the sustainable practices of B–corporations.
Starbucks practices and strives to achieve environmental sustainability. Although, Starbuck's tremendous struggle to increase environmental
sustainability, they continue to break the rules that they have put in place through their malpractice of washing dishes and the non eco–friendly cups.
Even though their gargantuan efforts towards increasing their practices, it is clear that it needs to improve its sustainability through reducing the energy

"We work to shrink our environmental footprint and meet our expectations of our customers by reducing the waste associated with our business,
increasing recycling and promoting reusable cups". This quote comes up in bold when you click on Starbuck's recycling page. Most of the waste
however caused by Starbucks happens behind the counter or in the backroom this is why most of the customers don't see these recycling actions
(Recycling). Ever since 1985 Starbucks started a campaign, which dictated whenever a customer brought in a reusable tumbler/ mug they would
receive a discount on their drink (Recycling). In 2008, Starbucks claims that it will be able to cut down the amount of water consumption by 25% by
2015; unfortunately they were not able to complete this goal but managed to cut down their consumption by 23%. Throughout 2014, the corporation
remained in the top 10 purchasers of renewable energy in the US. This year Starbucks has grown over 400 millions of pounds of coffee which have
been grown sustainably, in ways that benefit and protect nature and the farmers. Starbucks worked with 3Degrees to work out a deal where they
bought more than 211 Kilowatts hours of reusable energy, to man their stores (Roos). These actions taken by the Starbucks corporation has so far not
only made a statement on the way people are acting towards recycling but has also motivated them to think differently about the

Impacts On Environmental Sustainability Tactics Essay
SimCity: Impacts on Environmental Sustainability Tactics In evaluating sustainability strategies for the future, it can be difficult to assess which are
feasible and easy to accomplish; people can thus use this as an excuse to not engage in environmentally friendly tactics or ignore our deteriorating
planet. As it becomes increasingly necessary to find ways of encouraging people to help our world, we must look at unconventional ways of urging
the global population to think critically about how we treat the planet; this includes creative works, ranging from pieces of art to video games, such as
SimCity. SimCity is a simulation game that allows users to found and develop a city, while simultaneously maintaining the happiness of citizens and a
stable budget. Given the ability to act as leaders in an emerging city, regardless of our actual roles in society, we can learn exactly how management
works in attempting to develop lasting contributions in the world. Although it seems like just a game, SimCity teaches us that different kinds of
leadership can produce a way of thinking that allows us to evaluate the long term impacts of our current behavior.
The point of SimCity is to develop a flourishing city for its citizens while staying within a budget; with that in mind, players have the freedom to
expand their city however they want to. When looking from a sustainability viewpoint, the challenge is to build an environmentally friendly city in
spite of certain constraints;

Environment Education : Sustainability Is Environmental...
Sustainability is "environment education". Learning about the environment and how natural systems function. It's everything that we need for our
survival and wellbeing relating directly to our natural surrounding. The changing climate effects society and communities in many ways. For example,
climate change can affect rainfall, our health, crops, and even our energy supply among other things.
Across the country and over many areas of our economy climate–related impacts are happening. Ozone layer depletion is one of the most serious
problems faced on earth. It is also one of the reasons which are leading to global warming. Ozone is a colorless gas which is found in the stratosphere
and protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun.
The ozone layer soaks up the harmful radiations and prevents the rays from entering the earth's atmosphere. Ultraviolet radiations are high–energy
electromagnetic waves given off by the sun which if enters the earth's atmosphere can lead to many environmental issues including global warming,
and some health issues for all living organisms.
The greenhouse effect happens when greenhouse gases collect in the earth's atmosphere. These gases included carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,
fluorinated gases, and ozone. Greenhouse gases let the sun's light shine onto the Earth's surface but trap the heat that reflects back up into the
atmosphere. In this way, they act like the glass walls of a greenhouse. This greenhouse effect keeps the

Environmental Sustainability And Ethics Into The Business...
As a manager of a fine dining restaurant in an inner city suburb, I notice that there is an increase in the number of people enquiring about food items
featured on the menu. Some are vegetarian; some ask where and how the food is produced, whilst others are celiac or show a high level of concern
over the ingredients used in each dish, due to allergies. As a result, there will be a growing trend towards consuming foods based on informed choice.
On the other hand, there are also some concerns about the ethics of eating and the provenance of food used on the menu. Hence, I decide that
incorporating principles of informed choice and ethics into the business could be a good way to respond to these emerging trends and promote the
business as being sustainable, environmentally concerned and ethically responsible. There are some imperative issues that the business ought to
consider about:
environmental sustainability
energy conservation
ethical eating
healthy eating and allergies
locavorism and food miles
vegan and vegetarianism
recycling and waste management

1. INTRODUCTION
This report was contracted by Western University to reduce landfill disposal of a specific end–product on campus. As a signatory of the Council of
Ontario Universities' Formal Declaration of Commitment to Environmental Sustainability, Western University is dedicated to sustainability [1].
Through various sustainability programs, Western currently diverts approximately 50% of the total waste generated on campus from the landfill [2].
The acceptance of disposable paper coffee cups and their plastic lids as recycling marked a major milestone in these sustainability programs. Prior to
this change, Western produced 12,000 disposable coffee cups on campus per day, with all 12,000 ending up in the landfill [3]. Following... Show more

Environmental Sustainability And Global Warming
Sustainability 'Sustainability' and all its connotations have become the term of the millennium thus far, although it was an idea introduced in the
1980's. It encompasses many interpretations, and has taken on a very loaded and preconceived meaning. Many have a vision of green initiatives and
global warming–based issues, but what does it mean to the in today's society? Even when narrowed to the disciplines of architecture and planning, it is
a multifaceted and loaded concept. Kenny and Meadowcroft discuss a shift in this complex term, stating that
"It is worth emphasizing that the notion of sustainability does not in any way imply only one kind of social future as the embodiment of 'the' sustainable
society. Environmental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The interest in sustainability is beginning to call into question some of the established modes of disciplinary thinking in the social sciences.
Environmental economics began the assault by rattling the bars of its disciplinary cage, but this exercise is gradually being taken forward in other
disciplines."
This point of departure of 'sustainability' shows that it has encompassed much more than the shallow context of green house gas emissions and
alternative energies. Today, it takes on a much more holistic approach, which also considers social and economic aspects in order to achieve a
'sustainable' society. Balancing environmental, economic, and equitable social dimensions (also known as the three E's) is discussed by Saha and
Paterson, as well as case studies on how governments have attempted to classify and address these issues. Some of the dimensions studied included;
ecological footprint analysis, energy efficient measures, transportation management, local employment industries, affordable housing provisions, and
administration/governance measures. Although approaches to these dimensions vary, the underlying message is that these aspects, which can be
generally classified into one of the three E's, should all be studied and considered to find long–term solutions in development and planning.

Environmental Issues On Sustainability Management
In contemporary society, the importance of sustainability has aroused public attention and debate. This is because pollution is growing day–by–day
with every second that time passes. It is like a bad dream that not only destroys our environment but also ruins our ecosystem and life cycle. Every
single living, as well as the non–living creature, is affected by pollution. Therefore, due to increasing community concern firms are constantly in search
of solutions to the existing environmental issues on sustainability management. They achieve this using economic incentives as well as partnerships
with various organizations (Wright 83). Businesses claim sustainability as a means of improvement for both the organization and its stakeholders. It
can be achieved by the government, corporation and society working together to achieve long–term goals. Companies are paying attention to change
the production methods which have considerable wastes and loss to recycling or reusing to reduce environmental impact. An example is the Levi
Strauss & Company which sustainably enhanced its garments. The firm developed a division catered to social and environmental sustainability. This
strategy entailed devising plans that would reduce the wastes of water and encourage recycling. The department approved of less use of water and
pesticides by the cotton farmers as well as washing less of their jeans by its customers. Also, it integrated recycled plastic into their garments and aimed

Balancing Strategy and Environmental Sustainability: Kimpton Hotels.
As the new manager, I came to the conclusion that Kimpton Hotels is the growing business. All the growing businesses can risk taking the decisions at
the drop of a hat usually associated with a lower quality of services. Implementation of change requires vision from the front–line managers and the
inspiration from the staff. Each Kimpton Hotel has a unique culture to support the organic and sustainable growth.

Walmart 's Environmental Impact On Sustainability
1.What projects did you select?
I selected Walmart's project to work with their suppliers to encourage sustainable practices and products, Walmart's own new commitment to move to
100% recyclable packaging and to remove certified synthetic colors and artificial flavors in their own products, and Walmart's project to raise their
hourly wage to $10.
2.What goals do the projects address in terms of environmental impacts?
The first project concerning Walmart's commitment to working with suppliers to evaluate their products relates directly to Walmart's environmental
impacts. Just looking at this aspect of this business, Walmart can be classified as a supplier. The goods they buy are then sold to the consumer through

Both packaging and emissions have a direct impact on the environment
The final project I am discussing, Walmart's wage increase doesn't directly relate to the environment. Concerning the triple bottom line this project fits
more into the social category, because it impacts the life of their workers and their community. They set the following goals: "Be the place to go for a
first job, provide a clear path for career advancement, put millions of associates through focused training, foster predictability and stability and pay,
accelerate the mobility of frontline retail workers beyond Walmart, promote culture, diversity and inclusion at Walmart, support economic inclusion in
supply chains and communities."(Walmart, 8).
3.How do the projects' outcomes relate to the business reasons for adopting sustainability practices?
The business reasons for adopting sustainability practices are reducing costs, generating new revenue streams, increasing market share, improving
external image, reducing compliance and litigation risks, attracting and retaining labor talent, and attracting capitol. All three of these projects relate to
several of these reasons. It is important to consider that Walmart has just recently implemented most of their sustainability projects, there has not been

Persuasive Essay On Environmental Sustainability
The current global population of 7.6 billion people is expected to reach 11.2 billion in 2100 (UN DESA), and as the Earth's population continues to
grow exponentially, the topic of environmental sustainability is being debated with increased urgency. In the past few years, many large–scale
environmental issues have emerged due to human activities: climate change, air and water pollution, rising sea levels, habitat loss, species extinction,
and worsening natural disasters are all becoming more and more prevalent. But perhaps our most immediate concern should be whether or not we will
be able to continue feeding this ever–increasing population.
While all of us relatively understand how driving cars, leaving the lights on, or using too much water can affect the environment, there is one massive
human activity that is frequently overlooked–eating. From growing, to processing, to distributing, and finally consuming, our agricultural system uses
an immense portion of our planet's limited resources and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases that have drastic effects on the environment.
Because of this, it is imperative to understand the environmental impacts of the type of foods that we choose to include in our diets. While much of
today's population is heavily reliant on animal products, it is evident that a meat–based diet is not environmentally sustainable; on the other hand, a
plant–based diet is much more environmentally friendly in terms of the amount of grain, water, and

Environmental Sustainability And The Global Warming
Environmental sustainability has been receiving immense academic and industry attention in recent years. Increasing carbon emissions and the
associated global warming have been raising numerous questions on the efforts required to make businesses more sustainable environmentally. In a
globalized world, where manufacturing is increasingly getting concentrated, transportation of products over long distances is a reality. Increasing
consumption, richer lifestyles and supply chain issues such as higher levels of logistics and transportation coordination have led to higher carbon
emissions thereby raising important questions on environmental sustainability. On a parallel basis, customers are becoming more environmentally

Also, from a packaging point of view, the possibility of repeated use of the same packaging materials (such as pallets) in a closed loop should be
investigated. One such example is the use of recycled materials for packaging. A focus on reducing energy has a key influence on structuring key
aspects of reverse logistics design. Return centers should be close to customer sites in order to limit transportation times and costs. The size of these
centers should be commensurate with return rates. Another example is the use of third party providers for dealing with returns, setting up recycling and
disposal depots. In general, collaborations with supply chain partners in recycling and remanufacturing strategies requires the alignment of the firms
overall sustainability strategies with its reverse logistics strategy. Also, a focus on educating employees as a key part of sustainability strategy has a
key influence on staffing the reverse supply chains. Employees with knowledge of local trends are a great asset that can eventually lead to successful
reverse logistics efforts. Taken together, these suggested patterns lead to the hypothesis that a firmЧіs sustainability strategy is positively associated
with reverse logistics strategies.
The flow of commercial returns, products returned by customers for any reason within 90 days of sale, is a significant concern for many manufacturers.
The total value of these returns is estimated at

barriers to moving towards an environmentally sustainable university. As universities are a large source of energy production, students should also be
educated on the environment. This awareness of our carbon footprint should be integrated into the learning curriculum. "The United Nations (UN)

Investment inflows and trade affect environmental sustainability: Evidence from Panel data in Southeast Asia
Abstract
The inter–linkage between investment flows and trade and environmental sustainability is an extensively researched area. It has been marked that FDI
is increasingly being directed to the developing countries in recent period, whose export basket is generally more intensive in primary products and
manufacturing products. In this background, the recent study contributes to the existing merge of research by managing a panel data empirical
analysis over 2000–2014 for Southeast Asian 9 countries to understand the relationship between investment flows and trade and environmental
performance index (EPI) for countries. The regression results reveal that while environmental sustainability of countries is negatively related with
merchandise export orientation and FDI outward movements, it is a positively manipulated by service exports. The findings also confirm a positive
relationship between several politic economic factors (e.g. abundant democratic set up and lesser corruption) and environmental performance of
countries. The empirical findings lend proof to the competition that investment flows and trade significantly affects environmental sustainability of
Southeast Asia countries.

Csr Reporting Implications For Barclays Banks...

  • 1. Csr Reporting Implications For Barclays Banks... 6F6Z3007: Assignment 2: CSR reporting Implications for Barclays Banks Environmental Sustainability Introduction 'Corporate social responsibility (CSR), broadly defined as the notion that companies should accompany the pursuit of profit with good citizenship within a wider society, has become an increasingly prominent feature of business life over the last 10 to 15 years' (Sadler and Lloyd, 2009:613). This quote from Sadler and Lloyd is a useful starting point in demonstrating the rapid rise and development of corporate responsibility. Global issues, in an economic sense with the global financial crisis in 2008 and in an environmental sense with the threat of climate change have aided in bringing to the fore a need for businesses and the corporate world to manage themselves and the services they offer in a more responsible and sustainable way. In particular reference to the financial sector this has attempted to be achieved through global financial sustainability agreements such as the Equator Principles. By entering into global agreements careful monitoring and reporting of a banks activities is required to create transparency in assessing their contributions towards corporate social responsibility and the achievement of sustainable practices in the financial sector. One of the banks currently signed up to the Equator principles is Barclays, as one of the largest global banks in the world with a 300 year history it is a company that serves 48 million customers worldwide ... • 2. Environmental Sustainability At The World, Massachusetts... Introduction Environmental sustainability is a subject that has seen an exponential rise in its importance and influence since the past few decades. Since 1970, when this topic started gaining wide attention, several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability. These organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or local, have initiatives and goals that they follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the larger and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. What is Environmental Sustainability? Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This includes the air that we breathe which is constantly getting polluted by several chemicals discharged into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as well as the still present frontier attitude. Talking about the future, popular environmental activist David Suzuki once said, "We're in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone's arguing over where they're going to sit." The world for our future generations does not seem very promising, which is why environmental sustainability initiatives are all the more important. Findings and Discussion There are several unique ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Does the United Nations Support Environmental... Introduction About the United Nations The United Nations is an international organization, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War, committed to providing the means to help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting human beings all over the world (Wikipedia). The organization is committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights (Wikipedia). 'Ensuring environmental sustainability', climate change being one of the major factors, is one of the millennium development goals of the UN. The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, along with many organizations/agencies under the UN, collaboratively work towards achieving this goal. About the Chosen Aspect of Study 'How does the United Nations support the millennium development goal of promoting environmental sustainability by limiting climate change in South and North America?' This investigation shall focus on the previously mentioned question as this a very interesting topic to further research on, also as I believe that the UN has played an enormous role in promoting environmental sustainability in South and North America, and therefore would make a good topic to further research on. This topic is worthy of studying as by knowing of what many before us have done to protect and sustain the environment, we can look into aiding the environment to a ... • 4. The Impact Of Environmental Sustainability On The... Kristina King Soc 327 October 9, 2015 Reflection Paper # 1 If out of the 17 U.N. Millennium Development Goals for 2030 could be achieved, I feel that ensuring environmental sustainability would be most crucial. Environmental sustainability and development is necessary to reduce poverty and increase the wellbeing of not only today's people, but for future generations.(1) These global environment isssues require a global solution. However inequality between countries creates environmental issues, uneven development, and difficulty and finding solutions. (2) I believe as humans we are dependent on the environment. Sustaining the environment to me trumpets all other goals the UN proposes to meet. Ensuring environmental stability is the core that allows the other goals listed to be able to function. Finding a solution to poverty and hunger is a very critical goal I would love to see met, but that cannot function without first providing a sound stable safe environment. Environmental sustainability is intertwined with poverty, hunger, and disease. Climate changes and global poverty combined affect the people of the poor rural areas that are dependent on natural resources for their survival and support to their families. How important can the issue of maternal health and universal education be to the laymen of these rural areas, who are worried about providing their families next meal. Ensuring environmental sustainability falls under goal 7. Four main targets are listed in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Critical Appraisal Of Social And Environmental... Introduction Environmental and social sustainability is a growing concept, in the modern day business world. This essay will cover sustainability but particularly, will cover the following: A critical appraisal of social and environmental sustainability, its importance related to issues that can affectcorporate social responsibility. The essay will evaluate specific ideas; provide evidence to support the recommendation, using relevant academic books, journals and articles where it is appropriate. Concluding this essay, there will be a critical appraisal of a company's annual reporting, that may contribute to embedding sustainability in decision making, in the context of business practice. 1.1Sustainability A firm is legally a separate entity and it is treated as a citizen. Although it is controlled and directed by people, "Corporate governance is the system by which companies are directed and controlled. Boards of directors are responsible for the governance of their companies"(Financial Reporting Council, 2012). FRC corporate code tells us that the company is driven by the board and they are also responsible for the effective running of the firm. This clearly states that the board owes the fiduciary duty of care to act in the best interest of the shareholders and other stakeholders, as they are acting as agents on the behalf of the principal (shareholders). Stakeholders are all those who can affect or be affected by the business activities. Rajan defines sustainability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Are Individual Consumers Primarily Responsible For... Are individual consumers primarily responsible for environmental sustainability? Introduction Living on the Earth, it is important for each of the organizations as well as individuals to help with making it a better place to live. However for the current time, environmental degradation is still one of the most threatening problems confronted with human beings. The carbon dioxide emission has made the global warmth, which may cause the diminishing of lands where human beings could live on; air pollution has caused more diseases, climate change has led to more serious problems in biodiversity which is important to form a balanced natural environment, water toxic pollution has reduced the available access to clean water. In the everyday life of human beings, the unfavorable influences on the environment could be worse on condition that environmental degradation is not paid with enough attention (Bare, 2014). For instance, the applying of cars, which would cause inevitable air pollution and energy consumption, would add pressure for environmental protection (David and Michael, 2014). For the environmental sustainability, the individual activities are essential, but the responsibility of individuals could not be described as primary as the roles of organizations are rather important. This essay is going to talk about the responsibility of individual customers for environmental sustainability, as well as the responsibility of organizations. To form the environmental ... • 8. Using Population Control to Achieve Environmental... Environmental sustainability is when a person, community or area is able to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the future. Overconsumption will lead to hardship in the future, and possibly to the destruction of the planet's finite resources; and if we continue using our resources as at current rates, which have been estimated to be 4 planets worth of resources, this will be inevitable. Populations are all the inhabitants of a specific area/country and this population can be controlled in various methods such as population policies, like the ones in China, Kerala and France; as well as control via migration by putting on limits. On the other hand, Canada has a fairly low population density of just 3.75 people per square kilometer and with high resources, Canada is environmentally sustainable; some even say that Canada is under populated and therefore Canada is lenient on in migration. Similarly to this, Thomas Malthus (1766–1834) had the theory that when population overshoots a certain point (usually food production) there will be catastrophic effects. The club of Rome, in 1968 published a report called the 'limit of growth', which stated that population growth will lead to an increase in food demand and this will eventually lead to resource exhaustion, which is obviously not environmentally sustainable. To prevent resource exhaustion, the Club of Rome decided that we have to regulate population growth and reduce fertility– and that is what China's One Child Policy, and Kerala's non–enforced population policy was aiming to do. Similarly, the anti–Malthusianist– Ester Boserup was a resource optimist, with research based on studies of shifting cultivation. Her hypothesis was that population growth would result in an increase demand for food and to meet this demand, improved agriculture productivity would be needed. A higher agricultural productivity means an increase in methods of agriculture like the 'slash and burn' technique, which often are not environmentally sustainable at all. • 9. Environmental Impacts Of The Sustainability Goals In order for the sustainability goals to be successful and meaningful, the targets must be measurable. By nature, some of the targets are more measurable than others. It is easy to measure those that are quantitative as the goals are very precise. Target 14.1, to reduce marine pollution of all kinds can be measured by surveying micro–plastic concentrations in seawater and marine life (Global Ocean Commission 2). Similarly, the goal of minimizing acidification can be measured by collecting pH samples (Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network 172) and the conservation of coastal and marine areas can be measured by collecting data on marine protected areas (GOC 5). It is more difficult to measure targets that are more broad and subjective. The success or failures of these targets are measured by monitoring programs, administering policies, law enforcement and assessing the environmental impacts (4). For example, targets 14.7 and 14.9, which look at the economical benefits and subsidies are measured by monitoring data and policies used in various countries. Likewise, target 14.12, to ensure full implementation of international law, is measured by looking at the number of flag states and countries who have ratified laws (6). Some targets feature both precise and subjective indicators. For instance, targets 14.4 and 14.6 which deal with the regulation of dangerous fishing practices can be measured by looking at the reported data of fish tonnage within ... A more efficient use of resources such as water, energy and natural resources directly benefits businesses in the UK. Infection through cuts or abrasions, injection through sharp injuries within the waste, ingestion through hand to mouth contact and inhalation are four main risks. Hazardous waste poses more of a potential threat to health or the environment if not managed properly. We don't deal with hazardous waste as such, on a daily basis our waste consists of general and food waste. We have a company come to dispose of our confidential waste but this doesn't pose potential risks as confidential waste consists of paper work, the worst thing that could happen would probably be getting a paper cut. Heavy lifting may come into it if there is a mass amount of waste to dispose of. This can cause pack pain if not lifted correctly. The University Of Regina 's Environmental Sustainability The University Of Regina's Environmental Sustainability Introduction The student and staff population of the University of Regina is soon going to surpass a population of 15,000 students. The growing population of the U of R requires administrative and student action to maintaining environmental sustainability. It is crucial to its maintenance to implement environment sustainability. Environment sustainability can be defined as taking responsible actions towards maintaining the environment and eliminating any type of negative impacts that we produce to negate any environmental damages. Summary The University of Regina takes pride in supporting and taking a leadership role in initiatives that will benefit the environment. For instance, the U of R shuts off the lights by 11 pm, as part of the light–off campaign (On the Way to Sustaining a Sustainable Campus, 2016). In some places around the campus, such as the Riddell Centre, there are different containers for paper, bottles and garbage disposal. Categorizing waste and recycling maximizes recycling potential, and minimizes waste output. Additionally, the on–campus residence there are communal garbage disposal room with large bins for different kinds of waste and recycling such as milk bottle bins, garbage bag bins, recycling paper bins, bins for glass, and all flattened boxes to be thrown in one big bin. If they cannot be continued indefinitely then they are not sustainable (Daly 1990). It is a state in which the demands on the environment can be met without reducing its capacity to allow all people to live well, now and in the future. Both Agyeman and Carter seem to share the view that environmental sustainability and environmental justice are two distinct terms, which must work in tandem in order to achieve just sustainability. Building upon this point, Agyeman and Carter find it necessary to address the sustainability needs of people beyond the conventional environmental focus. A fitting example of Carter and Agyeman's beliefs about justsustainability is the Sustainability in Prisons Project (or SPP). Synopsis Introduction Site Comparison Each site location has its pros and cons in terms of economic, environmental and social aspect of sustainability. Since this is a building site for University of Calgary to showcase sustainability, it is important that the building itself is sustainable. Various of criteria will be set in correspondence to these three aspects of sustainability to quantify the sustainable value of each site. Environmental Sustainability Figure 1. Site 3 Flood Zone and Green Area Flood Zone Flooding from the river is one of the key natural disaster that Calgary faces, hence, one of the major concerns of the sustainability of this building is whether the site is situated within the flood zone. Per the Province of Alberta Flood Hazard Map (See Appendix A), the flood line of each location is mapped in Figure 1, 2, and 3. From that, we can conclude that site 2 will not be affected by the flood, whereas site 1 is situated very close to the flood line and site 3 completely overlaps with it, which may not be the optimal site. • 16. Reflection On Environmental Sustainability Introduction This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered exploring the influences of these my life and how these have altered my view on what is environmental sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will follow into reviewing my perspectives on environmental sustainability and how these two experiences influenced this. To conclude a discussion on my role as a teacher and how this will impact myself when in the classroom. Part A The first experience I had was travelling through an area called Baynton about 100kms north east of Melbourne early in 2009. It was about 6 weeks after the Black Saturday bushfires devastated the whole region, driving through was incredibly eerie and unsettling. Everything was black and charred, in the paddocks there was no grass, no fences, all the trees were burnt trunks, no foliage at all was present. There were no animals grazing in the paddocks, no wildlife was visible and no green anywhere. Fire is a natural part of life as my friend told me that day, trees will grow again, fences can be mended, the animals and wildlife will return. People are what matter, thankfully no one lost their lives in the region I travelled that day. Seeing the devastation reminded me the power of nature and how there are still many natural occurrences that mankind cannot control or master. Speaking with residents (personal communication, March, 2009), similar and consistent observations were made that bushfire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although Australia isn 't as large as China we still produce 1.11% of the world 's emissions. Now people are starting to see the effects of the Carbon Emissions and pollution is doing to the Earth. Carbon Pollution What exactly is Carbon Emissions? Carbon Emissions also known as Carbon Pollution, which is pollution through the production of Co2 (Carbon Dioxide). With the increase production of carbon emissions from industrial activity and general car emissions is now start to harm the environment, which is resulting in environmental disasters from rising sea levels from the melting of the ice caps. Another type of pollution is air pollutant, is any air pollutant that is emitted into the air. Such pollutants can involve physical, chemical, biological, radioactive substances or matter. With the increasing level of air pollutants is causing warming of the globe and low level thick smog covering major city worldwide. Environmentally Sustainability Environmental sustainability is defined as rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non–renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely. • 20. Global Environmental Activism And Environmental... Global Environmental Activism Vice President Joe Biden once said, "No fundamental social change occurs merely because government acts. It 's because civil society, the conscience of a country, begins to rise up and demand– demand – demand change." For society to rise up and demand change like Joe Biden is talking about there are ways to better understand what change needs to happen and how to put that change into motion, especially with environmental sustainability. First there must be an understanding of what ecological crises are and how they are negative affecting the earth while exploring how sustainability can help with these crises. Then to better understand sustainability one can explore sustainable practices around the world through case studies and even local practices of sustainability. However one must understand the thought process behind sustainability and how to make that work in favor of making change. This includes both the Dominant Social Paradigm and the New Ecological Paradigm and how they both can be used to facilitate change. Once there is an understanding of the problem and a plan to fix it then the action must take place. While action can take many different forms, for many people it is structured as environmental activism. To further study environmental activism once can use organizations such as 350.org, Fossil Free, and The People 's Climate Movement to study how they are organized, their strategies, who is involved, and how successful ... And second, as the human population drastically increases, resources needed per capita increases, consequentially adding stress on the environment. 1 As need for resources increased, so did technologies in transportation, which allowed for extensive logging in tropical rainforest. Either by deciding to turn on one switch or by utilizing slightly hotter water to shower than usual, you're utilizing resources that are extracted from the environment. How David Orr said it "All education is environmental education." What he meant was that no matter what we study, it ties into our environment and how we live. By studying microeconomics you study whether you're making a profit by analyzing which is greater, the social benefit or social cost. If a company is producing pollution that is contaminating the drinking water, it doesn't matter if you're making a profit, the social cost is greater than the marginal private benefit for the government would impose taxes to limit on how much you're producing. All this goes to show that it doesn't matter if you're studying areas that doesn't even have to do with the environment such as economics, it still ties into our surroundings which is why one needs to include environmental sustainability. Another evidence to why environmental sustainability should be included into the college curriculum is because "knowledge carries with it the responsibility to see that it is well used in the world" (Orr). Sustainability is defined as, "the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely." ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014) There are three pillars that make up overall sustainability: social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Social sustainability focuses on all human needs being met and a society functioning properly indefinitely. Economic sustainability is achieving a certain level of economic success indefinitely. It also involves having an extremely low percent of people living below the poverty line, which relates to social sustainability. Environmental sustainability is described as, "the rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non–renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely." ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014) Achieving environmental sustainability will positively affect the social and economic aspects. For example, climate change can affect rainfall, our health, crops, and even our energy supply among other things. Across the country and over many areas of our economy climate–related impacts are happening. Ozone layer depletion is one of the most serious problems faced on earth. It is also one of the reasons which are leading to global warming. Ozone is a colorless gas which is found in the stratosphere and protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun. The ozone layer soaks up the harmful radiations and prevents the rays from entering the earth's atmosphere. Ultraviolet radiations are high–energy electromagnetic waves given off by the sun which if enters the earth's atmosphere can lead to many environmental issues including global warming, and some health issues for all living organisms. The greenhouse effect happens when greenhouse gases collect in the earth's atmosphere. These gases included carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases, and ozone. Even when narrowed to the disciplines of architecture and planning, it is a multifaceted and loaded concept. This is because pollution is growing day–by–day with every second that time passes. It is like a bad dream that not only destroys our environment but also ruins our ecosystem and life cycle. Every single living, as well as the non–living creature, is affected by pollution. Therefore, due to increasing community concern firms are constantly in search of solutions to the existing environmental issues on sustainability management. They achieve this using economic incentives as well as partnerships with various organizations (Wright 83). Businesses claim sustainability as a means of improvement for both the organization and its stakeholders. It can be achieved by the government, corporation and society working together to achieve long–term goals. Companies are paying attention to change the production methods which have considerable wastes and loss to recycling or reusing to reduce environmental impact. An example is the Levi Strauss & Company which sustainably enhanced its garments. The firm developed a division catered to social and environmental sustainability. Persuasive Essay On Environmental Sustainability The current global population of 7.6 billion people is expected to reach 11.2 billion in 2100 (UN DESA), and as the Earth's population continues to grow exponentially, the topic of environmental sustainability is being debated with increased urgency. In the past few years, many large–scale environmental issues have emerged due to human activities: climate change, air and water pollution, rising sea levels, habitat loss, species extinction, and worsening natural disasters are all becoming more and more prevalent. But perhaps our most immediate concern should be whether or not we will be able to continue feeding this ever–increasing population. While all of us relatively understand how driving cars, leaving the lights on, or using too much water can affect the environment, there is one massive human activity that is frequently overlooked–eating. From growing, to processing, to distributing, and finally consuming, our agricultural system uses an immense portion of our planet's limited resources and emits large amounts of greenhouse gases that have drastic effects on the environment. Because of this, it is imperative to understand the environmental impacts of the type of foods that we choose to include in our diets. While much of today's population is heavily reliant on animal products, it is evident that a meat–based diet is not environmentally sustainable; on the other hand, a plant–based diet is much more environmentally friendly in terms of the amount of grain, water, and ...
