Osmolarity Lab Report
To osmo– regulate properly in a marine habitat, physiological mechanisms intended to conserve
fresh water and thus avoid dehydration are required. Marine mammals are well adapted to their
hyper–osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance
and life depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentration of
potassium ions is higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of
sodium ions is higher in the extracellular fluid.
Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of
solutes (i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in
another solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi–permeable
membrane, there is no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. Hypo
osmotic and hyper osmotic solutions have a lower and higher osmolalities, respectively. Isotonicity,
hypotonicity and hypertonicity describe the effects of osmolality across a semipermeable membrane
(Brooker, 2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Osmoconformers use diffusion to help regulate the concentration of water internally and externally.
Their cell walls are quite permeable, so when exposed to fresh water, they are exposed to a dilution
of their body fluids and this results in a loss of salts. Some have adapted to be able to withstand
temporary or even permanent dilution of the blood (McCarthy,

Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans
The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave
England. "They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop,
land of milk/honey(4)." Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to
reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. "The Old Testament Israelites," references specifically
the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt
had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into
slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to
land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they
too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many
executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton
himself tells the Puritans that they are God's chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites
inspire the Puritans to get away. "The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was
to the Rolling Stones– a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2)." Vowell uses an
analogy to compare two unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of
music originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The

With new concerns over artificial sweeteners, consumers are opting for more water. While more
water is the current trend, because of media attacks on the bottle water industry, more people are
beginning to second guess if it matter at all. A National Geographic, is a magazine of the National
Geographic Society, wrote an article on the negative impact of consumers consuming too much
bottled water in an article (Karlstrom and Dell 'Amore 2010). The article addressed issues such as,
the impact transporting water has on our environment due to fossil fuel use. Also, because some
water is pumped from underground, it impacts the natural water sources more than tap water. This
article also addressed more bottled water was sold for drinking than milk, coffee, and juice. Cities
such as San Francisco stopped purchasing bottle for city consumption, according to the article. This
was confirmed by www. msnbc.com.
Mayo Clinic states on their website www.mayoclinic.org, bottled water or tap water, it is a personal
preference. Both are tested regularly to ensure it meets safety guidelines. The Food and Drug

Analysis Of The Tri-State NJ Tough Mudder
This made four years in a row that participated in the Tri–State NJ Tough Mudder. Tough Mudder
has never hidden that fact this race weekend in the Tri–State area is very important to them and they
always bring their A game. I raced both days, Saturday I showed up just in time to run the last wave
of the day because this was OCR # 3 on the day. I started out in the early AM in Hoboken NJ and
then drove to Philadelphia and then double timed it back to NJ to run the full Tough Mudder course.
Registration and Festival:
I didn't use the standard check–in/registration lanes and arrived late on Saturday so I can't give an
honest opinion for Saturday, but on Sunday the lanes appeared to be moving a decent speed and that
was with a very large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was tracking the miles with my GPS watch to see how accurate it was compared to mile markers
and for the most part they were not that far off, but all of a sudden, we came to the 7.5–mile marker
when I was expecting to see the six–mile marker. I thought it was odd and I asked if we made a
wrong turn, because I did notice a part of the course that we didn't do and thought we screwed up. I
was told that we didn't make a mistake and later learned that due to it getting later in the day and the
course still had a lot of racers running the full course, so TM decided to cut out a part of the course
to avoid having a lot of racers still racing in the dark. I was very happy that we would be returning
the next day and running the full again so I would be able to run the entire course.
This was my third year that I ran a TM as this English Town Raceway venue and I have to say I
really liked how the course designer completely changed things up and used the entire venue very
different that the two previous races (2014 & 2016).
The course started in the woods and had a short distance walk/sprint and then exited the woods and
came to the first obstacle of the day, Berlin Walls, which on Sunday even though it rained a little
during the night, was still covered in lots of mud. The course then continued on for a little bit and
made came to Mud Mile 2.0, I enjoyed this

Descriptive Essay About Backyard Barbecues
It was the sort of day where you would find kids outside in a pool. The excited shrieks of children
playing. Lemonade being made and swimsuits being thrown on. It was the sort of day where kids
would have their friends over playing with water guns. Clothes would get wet. The lawn would have
small puddles filled with muddy water from the games being played. It was the sort of day for
backyard barbecues where the smell of hotdogs and hamburgers would draw in those from all
around the neighborhood. But, for those who lived beyond the swimming pools, beyond the muddy
puddles, beyond the backyard barbecues, beyond even Mcdonalds and the grocery stores, today was
not the perfect day. The only people past all the fun were in a large red ... Show more content on

His hands moved mechanically; grab the button move the button, grab the button move the button.
His arms ached from being held up moving back and forth. His stomach growled from pangs of
hunger that afflicted the many orphans. His legs were ready to give out from standing all day long.
His mind wandered in thought, thinking of all the things that he was missing out on. He thought of
all the things that other kids would be doing, the swimming pools, water guns, and barbecues that he
was not able to do because he had to work on making buttons.
A tall woman came into the room her high heels clicked as she moved. The children froze, each one
stopping what they were doing and stared. Miss Mitchum, the headmistress, never came into the
work area unless something was very important. She looked around and pointed at David. David
just looked at her, standing the way all orphans were taught. Frozen, back straight hands by his
sides, mouth closed. She walked over. Click, click, click. Her arm reached out and grabbed David.
David gave no resistance, all he had been taught to do was stand there and take the whatever she
would dish out to him. Miss Mitchims stood to address all of the orphans and smiled. The moment
she had been waiting for had come. Today was promotion day to the machine that all the orphans
hated the most. It was the day where someone 's job on the button making machines would change.

Evacuation In Montecito Summary
In the article "Rescue crews scramble to find missing in California mudslides as 10K evacuated in
Montecito" the authors, Matt Gutman and Bill Hutchinson, explain the events that happened on
Thursday when Montecito experienced torrential rain and mudslides. They continue by describing
the effects that it has had on those living there as well as local businesses that have been affected.
Between all of the writings they have posted pictures allowing those who read it the opportunity to
see the extent of the damage themselves and see the rescue teams hard at work. The rescue teams, as
they mentioned, have been using rescue dogs to help them sniff out any human remains that could
be buried underneath the mud and those who have survived within buildings or trapped between
rocks. The message was clear and gave all of the information necessary to fully understand the
situation along with how long those affected will be evacuated for and how long it might take for
electricity, water, and sanitation to come back. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the authors wrote, "Montecito was placed under a new evacuation order at 6 p.m. local
time Thursday. Almost the entire community –– about 10,000 people –– is now under mandatory
evacuation orders, which could last "one to two weeks," according to the Santa Barbara County fire
chief." (Matt Gutman & Bill Hutchinson) In that quote they give valuable information that gives
people a better idea of what to expect in the coming weeks as well as how big the problem truly is
without straight up saying that it is a big problem. Coming from that it is easy to see that they
wanted to give as much information as possible to those who want it or need

Symbolism in Dreams
In Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, the author uses Tony's dreams as a way of displaying
various symbols. Three symbols that are used often are weather, water, and the Golden Carp.
Weather is used to represent conflict. Water represents cleansing, and rejuvenation. The Golden
Carp symbolizes religion and Tony's beliefs. Because dreams are a not an exact mirror of reality,
they become the perfect tool for introducing symbolism. The author uses the dream as a way to
access the recurring themes of the book.

Weather, in the form of wind, thunder and lightning, and mist, provides powerful symbolism for the
conflicts in Tony's life.

Cleansing and rejuvenation are themes that are suggested by the author, and symbolized through the
use of water. In one of his dreams, Tony refers to the waters of the river, " I must lift the
muddy waters of the river in blessing to our new home!" (Anaya 26) The cleansing qualities
of the river show Tony's desire to put the tragic happenings of his life behind him, and begin anew.
His desire is to be washed clean from the haunting memories if Lupito's death. Another reference to
water is the waters of baptism. In Tony's dream his parents argue about what water he was baptized
in. "Oh please tell me which is the water that runs through my veins." (Anaya120) The
waters of baptism represent cleansing, but in the dream his parents argue over whether he was
baptized with the holy water of the moon, or the salt water from the oceans. This represents his
parent's pulling him in two opposite directions. Later in this dream Ultima explains to both of Tony's
parents that in reality both of their waters are the same. This shows that Tony is rejuvenated by the
idea that he dose not have to choose between one parent or another, but can take the best of both of
them. Because of the water Tony is able to

The Salt Marsh Ecosystem A Salt Marsh is an extremely important ecosystem. It is home to a
variety of both plants and animals. Salt Marshes have distinct characteristic that separate them from
other ecosystems. These characteristics force any plant or animal living there to have ways to adapt
to the sometimes extreme environments in order to survive and thrive. Salt Marshes are not only
biologically important, they also have economic and physical importance. We found many different
plants and organisms while exploring the Salt Marsh on the Salem State campus. Salt Marshes
contain great biodiversity, while functioning as sources of biological, physical, and economic
importance. Salt Marshes are coastal wetlands that are drained and flooded by tides. There are
channels that wind through the marshes and empty into pools. A Salt Marsh has great biodiversity
because it provides different habitats. There are muddy areas, pools with different depths, and a
variety of grasses. This makes it the perfect home for organisms such as birds, insects and worms,
fish, snails, crabs, and different mussels and clams. According to the National Ocean Service, the
characteristic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Environmental Ethics: The Muddy River Restoration Project
The Muddy River Restoration Project is currently a highly controversial topic in the realm of
environmental ethics. To prevent the recurrence and avoid the detrimental impacts of flooding,
members of the greater Boston, Massachusetts area proposed that sections of the Muddy River be
diverted and drained, ultimately enabling the floor of the river to be rebuilt. However, with this
project came the implication that the entirety of the ecosystem in these parts of the river, plants and
animals included, will be destroyed. Once the project is completed and the river is refilled,
repopulation will end up occurring by organisms distinct from the initial populace. This paper will
assess the underlying ethics behind the Muddy River Restoration Project ... Show more content on

For instance, planned efforts to remove the populations of invasive species inhabiting the Muddy
River have the potential to restore the biodiversity of the ecosystem, as native species will not have
to compete for resources such as space and sunlight for survival. However, because the goal is to
drain and refill the river, this objective is rather obsolete, since the whole ecosystem will end up
being removed, whether the species are invasive or not. Additionally, invasive species, such as
Phragmites, have been proven to support an extensive array of bird and mammal species along the
river's terrain, suggesting that it may be beneficial to ensure that these plants remain. Furthermore,
once these sections of the Muddy River are refilled, the introduction of new species would occur,
which could have the potential to further negatively impact the ecosystem. Without proper education
or environmental knowledge, members of the restoration team could likely introduce species that
are detrimental to the river itself along with its remaining inhabitants. Expanding the river may
provide room for increased biodiversity and less flooding in the long–run, but in the end, our respect
for the natural life that already exists needs to take precedence. This extends not only to organisms
that exist within

fields, singing about their struggles, their conditions and their sorry. Many of the songs carried
secret messages of escaping the plantation life. The music told of life experiences as slaves knew
them. The stories sung about in their music went back before the Civil War and even to the western
coast of Africa where men, women and children were captured and sold into slavery and brought to
America as slave laborers to work in Southern plantations. The Mississippi Delta is considered to be

muddy water and a lot of fresh water discharge the opposite of what shallow water species need to
grow. In many cases the break in coral reefs is the only way ships can cross. The monitoring of these
reefs needs to be extensive otherwise a maritime disaster could take place. In Retrospect the

Muddy Waters concert opens with Muddy plucking on his electric guitar to the tune of "long
distance call" is a slow song with a plea to "please call me on the phone sometime" the others in the

the band rolls out the same slow rhythm.
"Hoochie Coochie Man" is next, a little faster, a little happier; the piano is more prominent the
guitars have their small riffs with the harmonica played between the lyrics as always the drum
making steady time. The song proclaims: "I'm here, everybody knows, I'm the hoochie coochie

from Spearmint leaves via steam distillation and by extracting the distillate with CH2Cl2. We
analyzed the samples/enantiomers by using infrared spectroscopy, Bayer test, and TLC.

The resulting spots from all three samples traveled about same distance. There were three big spots
muddy brown in color. Out of the three main muddy spots, there were also some yellowish spots
observed for the spearmint leaves extraction sample and co–spot mixture sample. Knowing that both
of the enantiomers contain Limonene, these yellowish spots probably indicate presence of
Limonene. The location of the spots indicates the affinity of the compound to specific phase. The
muddy spots observed were close to each other at similar distance from the baseline. This indicates
that the compounds were less polar and had greater affinity to the mobile phase and quickly moved
up the plate with larger retention factors. Also, more polar compounds in the sample have greater
affinity to the stationary phase and therefore move slowly with smaller retention factors. This
findings suggest that Carvones are less polar compared to limonene, which is somewhat more polar
because it was found in the middle of baseline and muddy spots. This reasoning is supported by the
calculated retentions factor. The Rf for the Spearmint leaves for the three samples were calculated to
be: pure (R)–Carvone

Analysis Of Berry 's ' The King '
Another major challenge that Berry faced was being cheated and scammed due to lack of power and
education. Berry was cheated out of royalties because he signed a standard contract that he could
not comprehend. Berry believed that since the word copyright was in the contract several times, he
would be protected. While he read every word of the contract, Berry had little understanding and
would be cheated because of his lack of education. Berry would not discover this until receiving his
first royalty check and seeing the dispersant of money. These challenges Berry faced display
discrimination and challenges that Presley did not have to experience as a musician. These
experiences reflect and emphasize why society chose Presley over Berry to be remembered as King.
If these challenges would have been eliminated Presley would not be famous today and Chuck
Berry would be called the King. America was not ready to idolize an African American due to
Chuck Berry, but because of discovering the "king" Berry was not needed in society and was
convicted and thrown away. While these men had to face different challenges, and were given
different opportunities, they both had one thing in common: they had to stand out to get a start. They
had to have a style that had never been heard in the studio before, and they did just that. Both men
produced a sound like never before. Every musician is inspired or displays attributes of
predecessors. These attributes influence every aspect of their

Redolent of the dreadful 2016, Death has claimed its first victim for 2017 – rock 'n' roll pioneer,
Chuck Berry, at the age of 90 in St. Charles County, Missouri.
Although Presley is credited as America's first pop heartthrob and archetypal rock 'n roll frontman,
Berry was the mastermind architect that laid out the blueprints to the gritty, acerbic sound that
would be utilized by various generations of bands and solo acts that were to come.
Born in St Louis, Missouri, to a segregated, middle–class family, Charles Edward Anderson Berry
spent most of his formative years soaking up the local gospel, blues, country, and rhythm and blues
that made up most of his surrounding environment.

Upon his release, he settled into married life and spent a brief stint as a factory worker in
automobile assembly plants.
Receiving a degree in cosmetology, he moved on to being a beautician 2 years later and jammed
with various local acts to supplement his meagre income.
Inspired by Texan guitarist T–Bone Walker, Chuck Berry managed to master the 2–string bend
technique that would later be emulated by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and countless other
bands.
This hybrid fusion of hillbilly country and edgy rock 'n' roll quickly became a hit with white and
black audiences alike and would soon reach the ears of established blues guitarist, Muddy Waters, in
1955.
Upon being referred to Chess Records by Waters, Berry, with the guidance of Leonard Chess,
recorded his first hit single, Maybelline, which would reach No. 5 on the Billboard Pop chart and
No. 1 on the R&B charts. Besides the infectious beat and chugging rhythm, the narrative lyrics

Trophic Interactions Of Animals Essay
2. Describe 2 trophic interactions of an organism from the area studied.
An example of a trophic interaction includes parasitism, which is a relationship that involves a
harmful organism living on another organism, and is presented by the galls ("plant tumours") on the
Grey Mangrove. The formation of a gall is initiated when an insect feeds on a plant or dominates the
tissue of a plant and lays eggs there. The eggs will grow within the leaves, which they will
eventually devour. These abnormal growths of plant tissue are a response to irritation or harm of the
plant and it may slow down the photosynthesis process and may make the Grey Mangrove die.
Another example includes mutualism, where both species benefit from the relationship. Mutualism

Adaptations of the Sydney mud whelk:
Mud whelks have a big muscular foot which is mandatory for holding their prey captive and also
enables them to move through and attach itself to surfaces and survive the mudflat sediment which
consists of sand, silt, mud and organic matter.
They have a strong, hard shell to protect them from predators, and their shell also does not allow
moisture to seep in. Its shell also reduces water loss from evaporation. Camouflage is also possible
due to their lightly–coloured spiral

The Chicago Blues, A Style Of Blues
Chicago Blues
The Chicago blues was a style of blues that developed, as the name suggests, in Chicago. It was a
more modern type of blues and came about after the Great Migration of the 1900s. More than half a
million African Americans migrated from the Mississippi Delta and headed north, towards cities like
Chicago and Detroit (Public Broadcasting Service, 2015).
The Great Migration was a mass migration of African Americans from the south to northern states,

Worm Rooms: A Fictional Narrative
Meanwhile, Nick, Russ, Ron, and I was walking through the towering jungle that was our backyard.
Suddenly, we heard liquid missiles falling from the sky. BOOM!! We all started running faster than
a cheetah. Large drops of water, the size of automobiles, were coming from above. While we were
running, I slipped and fell in this slimy muddy lake. "Amy I'm coming!" Russ shouted as he slid
down to get me. My whole face and body was buried in the disgusting muddy lake. Russ grabbed
me and pulled me to the Lakeshore. "Are you okay Amy?" Nick said very worried. "Yes, I am okay
Nick." I replied back. "Come on we need to go!" Nick said. "Do you think Mr. Salinsky knows
about this yet?" Ron asked. "I hope not." I replied. Nick, Ron, Russ, and I were walking in a forest

Descriptive Essay : Kathmandu 's Summers
Kathmandu's summers are unforgiving. The sun at its zenith is a callous god, streaming down
sweltering heat that brings beads to any unadorned shoulders. Refuse piles sweat. The air is heavy
with humidity but also the stink of a thousand rancid armpits. Bluebottle flies buzz ravenously over
freshly butchered goat heads. Mosquitos breed in the millions in stagnating puddles, only to rise in
clouds as thick as smoke as dusk settles. Amorous frogs and crickets sound out the night, their
plaintive yearning rising in a crescendo that never crests.
But there is hope. Clouds marshal with the speed of massing armies, dark and ominous. The sky
blackens and the light that was once abundant is blotted out, the sun–god eclipsed by a monsoon
cloak. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Until little girls began to fall into open sewer holes. This year, the flooding in the streets intensified,
rising up a foot, drenching your knees. And lurking underneath that opaque sludge, holes feet deep
looking eagerly to swallow the unwary. That one cellphone video of a schoolgirl disappearing into a
drainage hole and reappearing a few metres down is a surreal sight. One moment she is there and
the next, she's gone. The waters close over her.
Earlier, the worst that could happen if you braved the slime of Kathmandu's streets were stinking
feet and ruined shoes, muddy trackmarks on the back of your pants, or maybe a rash. Now, you
could die. There was news of an electrical wire that fell into the street and electrocuted three men
walking through it. Another girl, Binita Phuyal from Nepaltar, fell into a drain and didn't make it out
alive. Responding to outrage, the prime minister issued an edict to fix all potholes within a fortnight.
The potholes might have been fixed since but the flooding continues.
Kathmandu is fast turning into a city that cannot be walked. In the winters, it is dust and smoke that
makes walking and breathing at the same time an almost insurmountable chore. In the summers, it is
the rains. Now, I only welcome the rain when I am home, safe within this brick and cement structure
from those stabbing daggers and that evil flood. If I have to step outside, I walk gingerly with an

Muddy Waters Research Paper
In this essay I will be discussing about Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. Muddy Waters, also
known as McKinley Morganfield which was in fact his actual birth name, was born on April the
fourth 1915 and sadly passed away April the thirtieth, 1983. Muddy Waters, was greatly known as
an American blues musician and guitarist. The Chicago blues is a form of blues music in Chicago, I
will be discussing more in detail about the Chicago blues within my essay.
Muddy, grew up in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. He was given the name 'Muddy Waters,' because
when he was a child he would always play in the muddy swamps of the rivers in Mississippi. His
Father, Ollie Morganfield worked as a farmer and was also a blues guitar player, however he was
separated from the family after Waters was born. His Mother, Bertha Jones died in 1918 and
therefore Muddy was raised by his grandmother Delia Jones in Clarksdale. Waters first worked as a
sharecropper at a cotton plantation, however he had always found time to entertain people with his
music. Waters was always musically talented. He learned how to play the harmonica when he was
just five and as a teenager he led a band that played at Mississippi Delta clubs. His singing was
influenced by the style of Son House and at 17, Waters self taught himself to play the guitar. ...

Analysis Of ' The Dark Side Of The Eyes Of Man '
Dashing through the luscious green undergrowth, the prey enters my vision. The animal evades me
entering through the cloudy mist. With the mugging humidity my skin begins to perspire. I roll up
my sleeves on my outgrown leather jacket up my arms with great difficulty. Reappearing into my
vision, I draw nearer to my prey. I swiftly draw back my bow and a burning sensation finds its way
into my muscles as the tension of the bowstring throughout my hunt increasingly menaces me.
Whizzing through the mist the arrow strikes the unaware creature dead in between his deep blue
eyes. After I retrieve the arrow, I carefully bundle up my prize into my burlap sack.
Sharp piercing shouts, belonging to my elder brothers, blare throughout woods. Following the sound
of his voice, I navigate through the fog to find the source of clamor. I bumble past branches as I
awkwardly lug my game in my hefty bag. Upon finding them, Peter calls my attention to the most
majestic composition of nature ever beheld by the eyes of man. The Great Conductor's glorious
touch perfectly aligning all aspects of this spectacle. Radiant beams of light illuminate the
masterpiece. Beautifully detailed shrubbery outlines the painting. Warm, vibrant blue water cascades
off the carefully chiseled cliff and into a pond teeming with life and activity. The waters of Eden left
flawlessly untouched.
As I draw back out of my trance I can see the expressions of amazement written on the faces of my

The Rolling Stone Redaction.
The Rolling Stone Redaction was the mistake waiting to happen as a result of journalistic
desperation on the Rolling Stones part, as the once iron clad story 's eggshell are torn asunder by the
increasing lack of verifiability. Only to reveal a viscous trail with no clear substance. As The Rolling
Stone began on this path, they put aside safeguards that would normally have sent the story to the
bin, ignoring conflicting information from the other sources and only focusing on the main. That is
when they gathered from other sources, as the paper has a distinct lack of transparency when it deals
with the testimony of other people, with most coming from the one source. Jackie, who as the facts
stacked toward and against, had discrepancies in her story tipping the scales away from
believability, and into fantastical dreams. A story can have one source that it draws heavily upon,
however, there has to be evidence to go along with it. In the aftermath with multiple sources coming
up and stating facts contrary to the story, there has to be the question of why Erdely did not contact
them, which, while the answer has its credible reasoning of not disturbing Jackie, the Rolling Stone
should have reached them for comment, as opposed to Jackie asking by proxy, adding a second hand
account that could have and was, utterly false. Prioritization also was an issue in this, while Erdely
focused more on exposing the University of Virginia for poor policy and rampant sexual crime, as

Studying The Chemistry And The Types Of Macro Invertebrates
In previous studies, studying the chemistry and the types of macro invertebrates that live in a pond
or stream can indicate how clean the water is; according to the North Carolina State university water
quality group, stoneflies like water rich in dissolved oxygen, cold in temperature and flowing
through rocks (Osmond watersheds page 1). In this lab, we went to two streams, cherry creek and
bear creek. We took physical Measurements like the width, depth, description of substrate and the
site. This was done for the upper, middle, and lower transect. and chemical measurements of the
streams like measuring pH, temperature, phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, dissolved O2, and
dissolved solids. We also counted the macro invertebrates we found and then we Identified the ones
we found. With the data that we collected, we hope to find out how does the water affect the types
of macro invertebrates found in the stream which brings up my hypothesis which is The more
dissolved O2 found in the water, we will find bioindicators that indicate clean water. I predict if
there is high amounts of O2 dissolved, then there will be presence of bio indicators that only live in
clean water. Our variables are water quality as our independent and our dependent is the macro
invertebrates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
To start off the lab, we went to cherry creek first, which is located on Speer and larimer. Then the

How Did Mulholland Build The Aqueduct
During the 1900's the city of Los Angeles and its surroundings were growing at a fast rate. As an
effect, the demand for basic needs developed day by day; more specifically, water demand. The just
appointed Los Angeles Bureau of Water Works and Supply, Fred Eaton suggested to build a new
aqueduct from Owens Valley to 250 miles south that could store water supply for at least two years.
His first step was to hire self–taught engineer, William Mullholland, who seemed to had knowledge
about the un–researched area where the aqueduct would be built. After analyzing different options,
Mulholland decided to build the dam in San Francisquito. However, Mulholland's lack of education
seemed to worry expert engineers. Therefore, a board named "Aqueduct ... Show more content on

First, the geology where the dam was being built foreshadowed that "slippage" could happen.
Second, the concrete had not been reinforced with steel and it "lacked contraction joints" which
helped the expansion of concrete in high temperatures. Third, the dam did not have underneath
tunnels or passages that allowed the inspection of the dam to know if cracks or leaks were present.
Lastly, Mulholland made the decision to utilize concrete instead of clay cores due to the lack of
"clayey" materials. As a result of this material choice, the dam had to be re–designed. Therefore, the
dam was built with a 175 feet high curved side with steps going down all the way to the bottom. As
mentioned before the city of Los Angeles and its surroundings was growing in increasing in
population faster than ever. To proportion this growth, Mulholland added 10 feet to the original
height of the dam. However, this adjustment was made without adjusting the width of the dam,
resulting in a disproportion. Nonetheless, Mulholland concluded the dam was still within the
margins of safety. After two years of construction the dam was completed in May

Mangroves in Australia Essay
Mangroves in Australia
The mangrove communities of Australia are some of the most highly adaptive plant communities in
the world. These plants live in an environment that is often engulfed with seawater. This
environment is considered an arid environment due to the lack of fresh water. The plants of the
mangrove community must develop several adaptations to deal with the environment. The
environment these plants often inhabit is referred to as an intertidal zone. The intertidal zone is the
transition between the salty ocean to the fresh water of the interior of the continent or island. To deal
with the salty environment, mangrove plants have developed modified roots. In some species, the
roots filter the incoming seawater. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These organisms, in turn, replenish nutrients back to the environment, which feed other animals. It
is apparent that the mangroves are the base of the food chain in this environment.
Introduction
The term mangrove doesn't refer to a single plant species, but to a variety of them that share a
similarity to one another. There are 54 recognized species that belong to 16 different families. A
mangrove is considered to be woody trees or shrubs that flourish in mangals (Hogarth 1999). A
mangal is referred to as an environment such as intertidal zones, muddy areas at river mouths, and
other areas usually inundated (covered) with water. Silt deposits in these areas make it a suitable
environment. Mangroves are considered to inhabit a harsh environment compared to other plants.
Their roots are located in salty, waterlogged, and oxygen lacking soils. These areas are influenced
by tidal action, so the water levels are fluctuating between high and low tides constantly (Talbot,
Steene 1990). The mangroves are the most widely distributed environments in Australia. They are
mostly tropical but have been found to survive in air temperatures as low as 5 degrees Celsius.
Mangrove distribution is most closely correlated with sea temperature than air temperature (Hogarth
1999). Mangroves range from the Gascoyne River and Banbury in Western Australia, across the
whole northern coast, down the east coast to

It was especially difficult for African–American women musicians. Women were not seen as equals
to men, they needed men to help them even get into the music industry and they needed men to help
them get their music recorded and heard. One scene, toward the middle of the movie was very
interesting to watch. The scene showed both African–Americans and White–Americans enjoying
one of Chuck Berry's performances where he plays his most famous song "Maybellene". However,
at first the two groups were divided by rope. At one point in the show, the audience broke through
the rope and were dancing together. This scene showed that even though African–American
musicians had a more difficult time in the music industry, their music was popular and enjoyed by
everyone. While the movie was about the lives of the people involved with Chess Records, mostly
Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters, and a few other artists, it was narrated by Willie Dixon. Willie
Dixon wrote a famous song sung by Muddy Waters featured in the film called "Hoochie Coochie
Man". While Willie Dixon was a famous musician, he was more involved with the business side of
Chess Records, which gave him a better perspective of what was going on in both the business side
of the industry and in the music. The way the biopic is told shows the ups and downs of the artists
lives. While it does show their triumphs, it shows more of the struggles they faced.

The Father of Chicago Blues
He is known for creating some of the greatest blues songs of all time– "I Can't Be Satisfied", "I feel
Like Going Home", and "Hoochie Coochie Man". His unique and distinctive voice conveyed
intense feelings and emotions to audiences all over the globe, while his guitar skills inspired some
of rock history's greatest legends. He was known as Muddy Waters; a man whose raw talent and
tenacity led him out of Mississippi, to Chicago, to winning several industry awards, and finally into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Much of the development of the blues genre, as well rock and roll, has been accredited to him– and
rightly so. Bringing the heart and soul of blues music to Chicago, Muddy Waters single–handedly

He was only three years–old at the time, and Della was an extremely young grandmother of 32 years
of age when he was born. Muddy's world seemed to revolve around music from a very early age,
although he did enjoy fishing and playing down by a nearby creek. He would always get dirt on his
clothes and mud on his face, which is how he was nicknamed Muddy Waters.
Muddy was not the only musical talent in the family. His father Ollie was well–known amongst
locals as a very skilled singer, guitarist, and washboard–player. This seemed to fuel Muddy's interest
in music, as he began to learn how to play a variety of instruments. He improvised by turning a
kerosene can into a drum, which became his first instrument, and that was followed by the
accordion, a harp, and a box and stick that he made into his first guitar. He recalled, "Couldn't do

Because of the small size, the particles float on the surface of water and often travel long distances

I sleep the sleep of mothers–which is to say, I wake at the noises my husband snores through. In the
waxing light of day, coyotes yip and howl a few miles down the creek. Though these tricksters are
no threat to us, their calls have woken me early. Grabbing my glasses, I sit up and soak in the rare

Saylor eats, plays, and sleeps in the comic universe, but that tiny arachnid would scare him worse
than if the apocalyptic horrors found in his stories actually came to life. I debate about climbing

untouched by the last of the glaciers and unlike the more well–known topography of the corn belt,
welcomes my family when we have a desire to wade knee deep in trout fishing heaven.
We pitch tents in Yellow River State Forest, just yards away from the creek where rainbows and
browns hide

Osmolarity Lab Report

  • 1. Osmolarity Lab Report To osmo– regulate properly in a marine habitat, physiological mechanisms intended to conserve fresh water and thus avoid dehydration are required. Marine mammals are well adapted to their hyper–osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance and life depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentration of potassium ions is higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of sodium ions is higher in the extracellular fluid. Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of solutes (i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in another solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi–permeable membrane, there is no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. Hypo osmotic and hyper osmotic solutions have a lower and higher osmolalities, respectively. Isotonicity, hypotonicity and hypertonicity describe the effects of osmolality across a semipermeable membrane (Brooker, 2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Osmoconformers use diffusion to help regulate the concentration of water internally and externally. Their cell walls are quite permeable, so when exposed to fresh water, they are exposed to a dilution of their body fluids and this results in a loss of salts. Some have adapted to be able to withstand temporary or even permanent dilution of the blood (McCarthy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave England. "They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop, land of milk/honey(4)." Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. "The Old Testament Israelites," references specifically the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton himself tells the Puritans that they are God's chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites inspire the Puritans to get away. "The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was to the Rolling Stones– a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2)." Vowell uses an analogy to compare two unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of music originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The emotion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With new concerns over artificial sweeteners, consumers are opting for more water. While more water is the current trend, because of media attacks on the bottle water industry, more people are beginning to second guess if it matter at all. A National Geographic, is a magazine of the National Geographic Society, wrote an article on the negative impact of consumers consuming too much bottled water in an article (Karlstrom and Dell 'Amore 2010). The article addressed issues such as, the impact transporting water has on our environment due to fossil fuel use. Also, because some water is pumped from underground, it impacts the natural water sources more than tap water. This article also addressed more bottled water was sold for drinking than milk, coffee, and juice. Cities such as San Francisco stopped purchasing bottle for city consumption, according to the article. This was confirmed by www. msnbc.com. • 4. Analysis Of The Tri-State NJ Tough Mudder This made four years in a row that participated in the Tri–State NJ Tough Mudder. Tough Mudder has never hidden that fact this race weekend in the Tri–State area is very important to them and they always bring their A game. I raced both days, Saturday I showed up just in time to run the last wave of the day because this was OCR # 3 on the day. I started out in the early AM in Hoboken NJ and then drove to Philadelphia and then double timed it back to NJ to run the full Tough Mudder course. I was tracking the miles with my GPS watch to see how accurate it was compared to mile markers and for the most part they were not that far off, but all of a sudden, we came to the 7.5–mile marker when I was expecting to see the six–mile marker. I thought it was odd and I asked if we made a wrong turn, because I did notice a part of the course that we didn't do and thought we screwed up. I was told that we didn't make a mistake and later learned that due to it getting later in the day and the course still had a lot of racers running the full course, so TM decided to cut out a part of the course to avoid having a lot of racers still racing in the dark. I was very happy that we would be returning the next day and running the full again so I would be able to run the entire course. This was my third year that I ran a TM as this English Town Raceway venue and I have to say I really liked how the course designer completely changed things up and used the entire venue very different that the two previous races (2014 & 2016). The course started in the woods and had a short distance walk/sprint and then exited the woods and came to the first obstacle of the day, Berlin Walls, which on Sunday even though it rained a little during the night, was still covered in lots of mud. • 5. Descriptive Essay About Backyard Barbecues It was the sort of day where you would find kids outside in a pool. The excited shrieks of children playing. Lemonade being made and swimsuits being thrown on. It was the sort of day where kids would have their friends over playing with water guns. Clothes would get wet. The lawn would have small puddles filled with muddy water from the games being played. It was the sort of day for backyard barbecues where the smell of hotdogs and hamburgers would draw in those from all around the neighborhood. But, for those who lived beyond the swimming pools, beyond the muddy puddles, beyond the backyard barbecues, beyond even Mcdonalds and the grocery stores, today was not the perfect day. His mind wandered in thought, thinking of all the things that he was missing out on. He thought of all the things that other kids would be doing, the swimming pools, water guns, and barbecues that he was not able to do because he had to work on making buttons. A tall woman came into the room her high heels clicked as she moved. The children froze, each one stopping what they were doing and stared. Miss Mitchum, the headmistress, never came into the work area unless something was very important. She looked around and pointed at David. David just looked at her, standing the way all orphans were taught. Frozen, back straight hands by his sides, mouth closed. She walked over. Click, click, click. Her arm reached out and grabbed David. David gave no resistance, all he had been taught to do was stand there and take the whatever she would dish out to him. Miss Mitchims stood to address all of the orphans and smiled. The moment she had been waiting for had come. Today was promotion day to the machine that all the orphans hated the most. Evacuation In Montecito Summary In the article "Rescue crews scramble to find missing in California mudslides as 10K evacuated in Montecito" the authors, Matt Gutman and Bill Hutchinson, explain the events that happened on Thursday when Montecito experienced torrential rain and mudslides. They continue by describing the effects that it has had on those living there as well as local businesses that have been affected. Between all of the writings they have posted pictures allowing those who read it the opportunity to see the extent of the damage themselves and see the rescue teams hard at work. The rescue teams, as they mentioned, have been using rescue dogs to help them sniff out any human remains that could be buried underneath the mud and those who have survived within buildings or trapped between rocks. The message was clear and gave all of the information necessary to fully understand the situation along with how long those affected will be evacuated for and how long it might take for electricity, water, and sanitation to come back. ... (Matt Gutman & Bill Hutchinson) In that quote they give valuable information that gives people a better idea of what to expect in the coming weeks as well as how big the problem truly is without straight up saying that it is a big problem. • 7. Essay on Bless Me Ultima Symbolism in Dreams In Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, the author uses Tony's dreams as a way of displaying various symbols. Three symbols that are used often are weather, water, and the Golden Carp. Weather is used to represent conflict. Water represents cleansing, and rejuvenation. The Golden Carp symbolizes religion and Tony's beliefs. Because dreams are a not an exact mirror of reality, they become the perfect tool for introducing symbolism. The author uses the dream as a way to access the recurring themes of the book. Weather affects the lives of everyone. When the weather turns foul, it makes life more difficult. Weather, in the form of wind, thunder and lightning, and mist, provides powerful symbolism for the conflicts in Tony's life. Cleansing and rejuvenation are themes that are suggested by the author, and symbolized through the use of water. In one of his dreams, Tony refers to the waters of the river, " I must lift the muddy waters of the river in blessing to our new home!" (Anaya 26) The cleansing qualities of the river show Tony's desire to put the tragic happenings of his life behind him, and begin anew. His desire is to be washed clean from the haunting memories if Lupito's death. Another reference to water is the waters of baptism. In Tony's dream his parents argue about what water he was baptized in. "Oh please tell me which is the water that runs through my veins." (Anaya120) The waters of baptism represent cleansing, but in the dream his parents argue over whether he was baptized with the holy water of the moon, or the salt water from the oceans. This represents his parent's pulling him in two opposite directions. Later in this dream Ultima explains to both of Tony's parents that in reality both of their waters are the same. This shows that Tony is rejuvenated by the idea that he dose not have to choose between one parent or another, but can take the best of both of them. Because of the water Tony is able to ... • 8. Salt Marsh Research Paper Kylie McGovern Professor Ted Maney Bio 131 L24 10 October 2014 The Salt Marsh Ecosystem A Salt Marsh is an extremely important ecosystem. It is home to a variety of both plants and animals. Salt Marshes have distinct characteristic that separate them from other ecosystems. These characteristics force any plant or animal living there to have ways to adapt to the sometimes extreme environments in order to survive and thrive. Salt Marshes are not only biologically important, they also have economic and physical importance. We found many different plants and organisms while exploring the Salt Marsh on the Salem State campus. Salt Marshes contain great biodiversity, while functioning as sources of biological, physical, and economic importance. Salt Marshes are coastal wetlands that are drained and flooded by tides. There are channels that wind through the marshes and empty into pools. A Salt Marsh has great biodiversity because it provides different habitats. There are muddy areas, pools with different depths, and a variety of grasses. This makes it the perfect home for organisms such as birds, insects and worms, fish, snails, crabs, and different mussels and clams. According to the National Ocean Service, the characteristic ... To prevent the recurrence and avoid the detrimental impacts of flooding, members of the greater Boston, Massachusetts area proposed that sections of the Muddy River be diverted and drained, ultimately enabling the floor of the river to be rebuilt. However, with this project came the implication that the entirety of the ecosystem in these parts of the river, plants and animals included, will be destroyed. For instance, planned efforts to remove the populations of invasive species inhabiting the Muddy River have the potential to restore the biodiversity of the ecosystem, as native species will not have to compete for resources such as space and sunlight for survival. However, because the goal is to drain and refill the river, this objective is rather obsolete, since the whole ecosystem will end up being removed, whether the species are invasive or not. Additionally, invasive species, such as Phragmites, have been proven to support an extensive array of bird and mammal species along the river's terrain, suggesting that it may be beneficial to ensure that these plants remain. Furthermore, once these sections of the Muddy River are refilled, the introduction of new species would occur, which could have the potential to further negatively impact the ecosystem. Without proper education or environmental knowledge, members of the restoration team could likely introduce species that are detrimental to the river itself along with its remaining inhabitants. Expanding the river may provide room for increased biodiversity and less flooding in the long–run, but in the end, our respect for the natural life that already exists needs to take precedence. Three symbols that are used often are weather, water, and the Golden Carp. Weather is used to represent conflict. Water represents cleansing, and rejuvenation. The Golden Carp symbolizes religion and Tony's beliefs. Because dreams are not an exact mirror of reality, they become the perfect tool for introducing symbolism. The author uses the dream as a way to access the recurring themes of the book. Weather affects the lives of everyone. When the weather turns foul, it makes life more difficult. Because of the water Tony is able to live his life better. The final example of water being usedas a symbol is in one of Tony's final dreams. He talks about his brother's livers, " They cried in such pain for release that I took their livers from the hook and cast them into the raging, muddy waters of the River of the Carp. Then they rested, and I rested." ( Anaya 235) This quote shows that because Antonio can not stop his brothers from their reckless wondering he instead casts their livers in to the river. ... Out of the three main muddy spots, there were also some yellowish spots observed for the spearmint leaves extraction sample and co–spot mixture sample. Knowing that both of the enantiomers contain Limonene, these yellowish spots probably indicate presence of Limonene. The location of the spots indicates the affinity of the compound to specific phase. The muddy spots observed were close to each other at similar distance from the baseline. This indicates that the compounds were less polar and had greater affinity to the mobile phase and quickly moved up the plate with larger retention factors. Also, more polar compounds in the sample have greater affinity to the stationary phase and therefore move slowly with smaller retention factors. This findings suggest that Carvones are less polar compared to limonene, which is somewhat more polar because it was found in the middle of baseline and muddy spots. This reasoning is supported by the calculated retentions factor. The Rf for the Spearmint leaves for the three samples were calculated to be: pure (R)–Carvone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The formation of a gall is initiated when an insect feeds on a plant or dominates the tissue of a plant and lays eggs there. The eggs will grow within the leaves, which they will eventually devour. Muddy Waters, was greatly known as an American blues musician and guitarist. The Chicago blues is a form of blues music in Chicago, I will be discussing more in detail about the Chicago blues within my essay. Muddy, grew up in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. He was given the name 'Muddy Waters,' because when he was a child he would always play in the muddy swamps of the rivers in Mississippi. His Father, Ollie Morganfield worked as a farmer and was also a blues guitar player, however he was separated from the family after Waters was born. His Mother, Bertha Jones died in 1918 and therefore Muddy was raised by his grandmother Delia Jones in Clarksdale. Waters first worked as a sharecropper at a cotton plantation, however he had always found time to entertain people with his music. Waters was always musically talented. As an effect, the demand for basic needs developed day by day; more specifically, water demand. The just appointed Los Angeles Bureau of Water Works and Supply, Fred Eaton suggested to build a new aqueduct from Owens Valley to 250 miles south that could store water supply for at least two years. His first step was to hire self–taught engineer, William Mullholland, who seemed to had knowledge about the un–researched area where the aqueduct would be built. • 31. Mangroves in Australia Essay Mangroves in Australia The mangrove communities of Australia are some of the most highly adaptive plant communities in the world. These plants live in an environment that is often engulfed with seawater. This environment is considered an arid environment due to the lack of fresh water. The plants of the mangrove community must develop several adaptations to deal with the environment. The environment these plants often inhabit is referred to as an intertidal zone. The intertidal zone is the transition between the salty ocean to the fresh water of the interior of the continent or island. To deal with the salty environment, mangrove plants have developed modified roots. In some species, the roots filter the incoming seawater. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These organisms, in turn, replenish nutrients back to the environment, which feed other animals. It is apparent that the mangroves are the base of the food chain in this environment. Introduction The term mangrove doesn't refer to a single plant species, but to a variety of them that share a similarity to one another. There are 54 recognized species that belong to 16 different families. A mangrove is considered to be woody trees or shrubs that flourish in mangals (Hogarth 1999). A mangal is referred to as an environment such as intertidal zones, muddy areas at river mouths, and other areas usually inundated (covered) with water. Silt deposits in these areas make it a suitable environment. Mangroves are considered to inhabit a harsh environment compared to other plants. Their roots are located in salty, waterlogged, and oxygen lacking soils. These areas are influenced by tidal action, so the water levels are fluctuating between high and low tides constantly (Talbot, Steene 1990). The mangroves are the most widely distributed environments in Australia. They are mostly tropical but have been found to survive in air temperatures as low as 5 degrees Celsius. Mangrove distribution is most closely correlated with sea temperature than air temperature (Hogarth 1999). Mangroves range from the Gascoyne River and Banbury in Western Australia, across the whole northern coast, down the east coast to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Hindu river was mistakenly thought to be the cause of the Grand Canyon by scientis. After observing the direction the pebbles layed in the river bank this idea was proven wrong because the pebbles layed in the opposite direction. Limestone found at Muddy Creek is a clue telling scientis the date the Colorado River arrived on this plateau, nearly 5.5 million years old. The water from the Grand Canyon carried masses of dirt and rock sediment and was too muddy to allow limestone to form. John Douglass theory of on how the Gand Canyon was formed, known as the "spillover theory" insinuate the Colorado River poured over into a basin. Forming a lake which then rised and then spilled across the plateau. Pouring down and cutting rapidly, like a over filled cup of water running off a table. Recently, he has built a model of his theory to test his hypothesis. Women were not seen as equals to men, they needed men to help them even get into the music industry and they needed men to help them get their music recorded and heard. The scene showed both African–Americans and White–Americans enjoying one of Chuck Berry's performances where he plays his most famous song "Maybellene". However, at first the two groups were divided by rope. At one point in the show, the audience broke through the rope and were dancing together. This scene showed that even though African–American musicians had a more difficult time in the music industry, their music was popular and enjoyed by everyone. While the movie was about the lives of the people involved with Chess Records, mostly Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters, and a few other artists, it was narrated by Willie Dixon. Willie Dixon wrote a famous song sung by Muddy Waters featured in the film called "Hoochie Coochie Man". While Willie Dixon was a famous musician, he was more involved with the business side of Chess Records, which gave him a better perspective of what was going on in both the business side of the industry and in the music.
