2. Executive Producer –
Oversees the work of the music producer and ensures that the final product is finished on
time, kept to a high standard and kept within the budget.
George Martin, the Beatles' executive producer said:
“A record producer is the designer -- not in the sense of creating the actual work itself, but
he stages the show and presents it to the world. It's his taste that makes it what it is -- good
or bad."
Music Producer –
Very involved with the creative process, including:
• Gathering potential song ideas
• Choosing a song or musician
• Proposing changes to song arrangements, based on the artist
• Controlling recording sessions
• Supervising the recording process
PRODUCTION OF MUSIC VIDEOS:
ROLE OF AN EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
AND A MUSIC PRODUCER.
3. • Initial Ideas – The first stage of creating a music video consists of coming up with initial
ideas and considering the target audience’s needs and wants, to ensure that they will enjoy
watching the music video.
• The Script – You need to have an idea of the narrative of the music video, including the
beginning, middle and ending, ensuring that it all makes sense and has a clear story.
• Storyboard – This allows everyone to have a clear vision about what will happen within the
music video in chronological order. This also allows people to see how the music video will
tie in with the lyrics of the song.
• Locations – A suitable and practical location must be chosen for the narrative of the music
video, as this will further help the audience with understanding the plot.
• Scheduling – Creating a schedule will ensure that all cast and crew members will be available
at certain dates and times, this will also help to avoid any confrontation, because all schedules
will be agreed, therefore there is no excuse for people who fail to turn up.
• Permissions – Cast under the age of 18 will have to have permission off their parents to be
in the music video for privacy reasons. If we wish to film on private land, we will have to
have permission off land owners to ensure that it is okay with them.
• Budget – As a team, we must ensure that our ideas are both practical and affordable, as our
budget will not be very high and we need to ensure that we have planned logically.

process, constantly coming up with new ways to make the final edit as good as
possible.

meaning that they are very interactive with the other members of the music
video production team.
Directors are usually signed to one production company however, some
directors prefer to work for multiple different production companies on
different projects.
The Director must take part in all of the pre-production process to ensure
that they are actively involved in the creation of the music video.
PRODUCTION OF MUSIC VIDEOS:
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE
DIRECTOR?
7. Major labels will have different departments that look after each task, as they have
more money and resources to do so however, this may limit your creative freedom
Smaller, independent labels will give you more creative control however, they have a
lot less money and resources. They only employ a small amount of people that will
look after the manufacture, recording and promotion of your record.
Labels provide you with money so that you can manufacture your record. They manage
the bill for all areas of your recording process, including for your studio time, the
producer, engineer etc.
Record labels will find you a suitable producer to help you create the best album
possible, they may also have an art department that will develop your album artwork.
The promotions department of your label should have a strategic marketing campaign
for your release involving press, radio, and TV appearances etc.
Record labels are in charge of the distribution of your record. If they are a major or
big indie label then they will use their own distribution services, some smaller labels
may use outside agencies such as the brilliant ‘Horus Music’
They will sublicense to other record labels to release the recordings in different
countries by licensing them the use of the recorded material. This allows a local
company to use its expertise in different countries.

sales for the artist.
EXHIBITION OF MUSIC VIDEOS:
12. Music is regulated for many reasons and due to the new regulations coming
into power in the UK in October 2015, Music videos will be subject to a
BBFC rating, just like films and DVD's, which will give a rating e.g. 15 or 18
which will limit people below this age to purchase the music video and/or
song. This new regulation is currently being trailed to see if younger audience
will stop viewing these inappropriate videos, as artists are becoming more
daring with their content.
YouTube currently has a ‘restricted mode’ which is available for signed in
users aged 18+. A current example of this is the ‘Work’ music video by
Rihanna and Drake, as it displays nudity.
