Mise en-scene Ideas
1.
2. 6 different characters will feature in my trailer and each will have a unique
costume to reflect their character’s personality. The costumes will also inform
the audience instantly what role the character will play within the conventional
Slasher characters
3. Costume Hair and Makeup; The Girls
The three female characters that will feature in my trailer are Alex, Katie and Amy. Each character has their own
style that will reflect their character and their role in the film. In typical Slasher fashion, only Alex, the more
intelligent, masculine and respectable of the three females will survive till the end.
Alex’s costume will show her tom-boy and tough side and will allow the audience to instantly know that she is
the Final Girl. Her costume will be much more covered up than the other two girls to reflect her more
conservative personality. I have decided that Alex will be featured in my trailer wearing skinny jeans, a plain
white t-shirt or vest top, a checked shirt and timberland boots. This will allow Alex to show her tomboy
personality and also presents her as an edgy and tough female. Her make up will be plain and basic to show her
natural beauty. It also helps to portray her as someone who doesn’t care much about their looks.
Emily’s costume will show her as the typical Slasher character of the ‘blonde bimbo’. This will allow the
audience to instantly recognise her character as the first one to die. Her costume will be revealing and skimpy
to portray her as the ‘slut’ character that is so well-known to Slasher. Emily will be featured in my trailer
wearing a short and tight black skirt, a bralet style top and red convereses. Her make up will be much heavier
than Alex, with dark eye-make up and red lipstick.
The last female character is Amy. This character is a bit smarter than Katie, but still isn’t smart enough to escape
Jackson. Like Emily, her costume will also consist of tight and skimpy clothing. This will help to portray her as a
typical Slasher victim. Amy will be featured in my trailer wearing a skater skirt, a crop top and Doc Martin style
shoes. Amy’s make up will also be very unnatural looking as she wear lipstick, blusher and eye shadow. This
helps to distinguish the type of girls that Amy and Katie portray from the type of girl that Alex portrays
The sub-genre of Slasher doesn’t require a lot of dramatic make up for effect as this is mainly a feature
necessary in supernatural horrors. Because of this the only extra make up effects that will be required would be
the use of fake blood in any fight scenes between the characters and Jason. I also have the idea of getting an
identical top to the one that Alex will be wearing in the trailer. This is because I can make over the second top
to appear ripped. The actress playing Alex will then change into the second top for the later half of the trailer
after her first encounter with Jackson
5. Costume Hair and Make up; The Boys
The three male characters that will feature in my trailer are the antagonist,
Jackson, and the two male victims; Chase and Mike. The three victim
characters will have very simple and similar costumes to reflect their
laidback and rebellious personalities. Whereas Jackson’s costume will be
very unique but still typical of a Slasher antagonist.
Jackson will be the main character featured in my trailer. I wanted to keep
him as close to a conventional Slasher killer as possible but to also create a
sense of originality to his look that will make him a classic and easily
recognisable Slasher killer. I have chosen to have Jackson featured in my
trailer wearing orange overalls, a clown mask and boots. He wont require
any makeup as I have chosen a mask that covers both his face and head.
Chase and Mike will all have similar costumes of jeans, trainers and a plain t-shirt.
Their costumes will differ by the jackets they wear, with Chase wearing
a hoodie and Mike wearing a leather jacket. I chose for these characters to
have very simple costumes as it allows them to fit in with the current
fashion trends among teenage boys. It also reflects them as very laidback
characters who would just throw on whatever they have clean.
7. Props
I have chosen only a few specific props to be featured in my trailer. This is because as the
majority of my film and the trailer will be set in a school location, the equipment already in the
school will be enough to reflect the school environment.
At the beginning of the trailer, I have chosen to have cigarettes and bottles of alchohol as the
necessary props. This is because it will allow the reflection of the teenagers as reckless and
rebellious teens who break the rules; typical Slasher characters. This is also because at the
beginning of the trailer it will show the characters partying in the school after they break in.
I will also have the props of bags and phones. This is because as typical teenagers, they will be
fixated with technology so will have phones, headphones, laptops, Ipads the lot. However I am
only planning on using the characters phones as props within my trailer. Also, bags are a
necessary prop within my trailer as one of the first things that happens is that one of the female
characters bag’s disappear. I chose to use this prop to build up the events of the trailer and to
make my Slasher film a bit different from others of it’s kind by having Jackson mess with the
teenagers first before disposing of them one by one.
Another prop I have decided to use is a Jack in the box. This is because it links to Jackson and his
costume. Also it creates contrapuntal sound that I think will be effective in my trailer. The Jack in
the Box will feature on the death of Amy; she hears the music, sees it on the floor and picks it up.
Just after it pops open, the camera will move from behind Amy to in front of her where the
audience see Jackson standing behind her.
The final prop I have chosen is, of course, Jackson’s weapon. I have chosen to keep it simple with
Jackson using a kitchen knife to slay his victims.
8. Lighting
I have decided to keep it quite simple with the lighting in my
trailer. As most of film is set at night in the school, some sort of
lighting will be necessary as ambient lighting will not be an option
in this part of the trailer. In the school setting, I have decided to
use Incident Lighting so they audience can see what is happening
clearly. I have chosen this lighting technique as it is the most
practical technique as I shall use the lights already built into the
school.
Part of the trailer will be set in a woodland area where the final
battle between Alex and Jackson takes place. In this section, as it
is set at night, ambient lighting may not be appropriate as the
characters may not be seen very clearly. In this case, I will use
torches to create a key light on the two characters. I am also
planning to use back lighting in this scene on Jackson only to
emphasis him and add to the fear and intimidation he creates
9. Only one character is going to feature on my film poster; Jackson. This is a common
convention of Slasher film posters that I have identified so is one that I will carry out also.
To maintain the symbiotic link between the three pieces of my promotional package,
Jackson will be presented on the film poster wearing the same costume he wears in the
trailer. This will also help to make Jackson a recognisable Slasher antagonist as he is always
seen in the same costume with the same weapon. This is why I have chosen to feature
Jackson’s weapon as the only prop in the frame for my film poster. I am going to use a
medium close up shot for the film poster emphasising Jackson’s mask and his weapon. I
will use a torch to create a key light that emphasises his mask among the darkness of the
rest of the frame.
10. Like the film poster, only Jackson will feature on the magazine front cover.
For the front cover, I am going to use a medium long shot which will allow
for more of his costume to be visible. His body position will be the same as
the one in a shot that will feature in my trailer when the first victim sees
Jackson. This will again help to maintain the symbiotic link. The front cover
will be set in the woodland area where the final fight takes place. I plan to
use ambient lighting but have the idea of Key Light as a backup in case the
shot is not bright enough with just Ambient Lighting
