Film production phases
Film production is the process of making a film starting from the story or idea through scriptwriting,
shooting to the distribution of the movie to the audience. There are four main phases involved in
film making.
Development phase
In the development phase, the film is written from the story (Cones, p. 195). The story may come
from a book, a play, another film or an original idea developed by the film producer. During the
development of the film, the film producer works in corroboration with the film writers to develop
the film message and a theme of the message. They then prepare a synopsis of the film. The film

It is aimed at making the film ready to be distributed to the viewers (Barbara and Sphor, p. 1–3). In
this phase, the production scripts and items are assembled to make a complete movie. According to
Barbara and Sphor (2002), activities involved in the post–production phase include film processing
and printing. Moreover, the pictures and the sound are synchronized in the post–production phase,
and an assemblage created. After the movie has been completed, it is then ready to be distributed to
the viewers.
Narrative films
According to Pramaggiore and Wallis (p. 8), narrative films produce comedy or tragedy. Therefore,
in narrative films, viewers expect the stories of human actors that produce comedy or tragedy due
to circumstances. According to Pramaggiore and Wallis (p. 8), viewers of narrative films would
expect to see stories about people who in the attempt to achieve certain objectives or goals undergo
through various obstacles on their way.
Mise–en–scene
This is a term used in film production and that is concerned with the way the story is told in a film
(Gibbs, p. 5–10). As such it refers to all the elements of visual styles used in the film.
Mise–en–scene refers to all components of the film composition including the film composition, film
framing, camera and character movement, film lighting as well as the sound used in the film
composition.

to see clips of horror that happened to another human being, this takes horror as we know it to a
whole new level. A risk with a horror documentary is involuntary mental flash backs that resurface

see an example of the audience having to witness the horrific removal of organs from a live human
being, one of our own species. We are forced as an audience to watch the pain and terror in the

Oher a teenage African American boy whose mother was battling drug and alcohol addictions, in
the projects of Memphis Tennessee. Mike as he is know in the movie was in foster care several
times and always ran away to his Mother, thinking that no one could ever love him the way his
Mother could, even with her ongoing addiction. Mike often slept at his fathers friends home, but
even he could not give Mike the support that he desired. He would wash his clothes in the sink at
the local laundry mat, and often had to steal food from the local gas station just to survive. When his

I feel as if this scene would have been more historically accurate 20 years ago, but there are
racially insensitive people all over, some just hide their insensitiveness better than others. Another
scene was where in Michael's first football game, the referees only threw flags on plays that he
made, when there was no reason for a flag to be thrown. This I feel is very accurate historically,
football and the South are hand in hand, and anything out of the ordinary or anything that
threatens a team will not go overlooked by anyone. The referees most likely felt that Michael had
an advantage over the other players just because he was African American, not knowing that a few
weeks prior Michael couldn't even tackle another player, and still had to think that the person he
was to tackle was a threat to his family. After reading different reviews from this film, I've chosen
two different reviews one from the Washington Post and the other from Variety. Each review gives
the movie at least 3 out of 4 stars but for different reasons. Firstly the WashingtonPost.com, they
gave the movie 3 out of 4 starts, but open the review with a very negative view of the
advertisements for the movie "There's been something off–putting about the ad campaign for "The
Blind Side," a drama about a white woman who adopts an African American high school student,

After having his store constantly being robbed Farhad started to become furious. The problem that
Farhad had wasn't that he needed his locks changed but yet he needed to invest in a brand new
door and that's exactly what Daniel tried to explain to him. Instead of taking Daniel's helpful
advice Farhad thought Daniel was trying to "cheat" him because he was an immigrant. Altruism is
having an unselfish interest in helping another person (King, 2010, p. 386). Daniel's displaced
altruism in the act of being considerate and trying to explain to Farhad that he needed to buy a new

Research is the heart and soul of great cinema and documentary films cannot be made without
in–depth research in the subject, however most makers don't pay much of attention to research in
commercial cinema especially if they have a good cast. Originality needs sensitivity and a good in

Baz Luhrmann is an Australian born director. He is known for his adaptation of Romeo and Juliet

The use of guns in Romeo and Juliet is essential and is possibly the most important prop used in the
film. The guns replace swords, illustrating the violence between the Montague and Capulet feud.
Similarly, the importance of props to convey and highlight an important idea from the original text is
also evident in The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby's signet ring and cane are frequently displayed:
indicative of Jay's stature. Luhrmanns use of cars and the obvious colour similarities in both

Film is an important part of culture, because it combines aspects such as song, story–telling, art and
expression. The scenes of a film come together to create harmony and to express an idea. The
Shining is a film that expressed Stephen King's novel in a cinematic way. In every scene from this
film there are indications of formalist techniques, when viewed all together as a movie, the idea of

This film used more classical instruments, and you can notice the difference between the classical
film and the formalist one. Though, if the director decided not to play music during this scene, we
might not have felt the same amount of sadness, and this would have been more formalist. Music
affects us incredibly, and the absence of music does too, so it is vital for the director to choose the
film's music according to what emotion they are trying to achieve. In The Shining, it is always the
feeling of suspense, and the bone chilling sounds of what might be a waterphone creates this feeling

1922 saw the transformation to official statehood of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic – shortly
after, this also served as a catalyst for Soviet cinema. Highly censored even after Stalin 's death,
Soviet cinema was seen as a communist propaganda tool, despite its lack of funding during its initial
commencement period. The popularity of imported and old Russian films in cinemas soon
increased, paving the way for emerging Soviet directors to produce new films.
This movement, although censored by the government, wanted to be free to experiment with film as
an art form. A method of this was viewing editing as a tool instead of a necessity. BothSergei
Eisenstein and Vsevolod Pudovkin are key directors and theorists of the Soviet film industry who
used the freedom of editing to create new exciting theories of montage which have been
implemented globally. The adoption of such theories drastically changed the state of Soviet cinema.
Eisenstein primarily examined montages to evoke emotion whilst Pudovkin focused more on
creating meaning and impression; neither had been done before. Their theories, although different
when analysed, do hold certain similarities.

billboard also represent the failed American Dream in the Valley of Ashes. The American Dream
"encoded at the very center of our national DNA is admiration for the self–made success story, the
mythic figure who pursues and fulfills his dream – someone like Jay Gatsby, a "Mr. Nobody from
Nowhere" who rises from obscure poverty to immense wealth" (Donahue 1). The American
Dream reflects throughout the film also as Jay Gatsby goes from poor to rich. Gatsby was very
unhappy with his families lack of wealth when he was young, making him strive to do anything
to become rich. Unfortunately but also ironically, Gatsby becomes rich illegally and dishonestly,

a key role in developing the movie as well as deepening the overall meaning. The title "The Great
Gatsby" makes the audience think at first glance this man named Gatsby is a "great," or
otherwise all around "wonderful" man. Gatsby can be considered a "great" man depending on
who you ask and each person's reasoning could be different. Gatsby's money is considered "new"

Through writing my pitch, I've learnt several things about the film industry. I've realised that a pitch
is the very first thing we need to do before proceeding to any preproduction or production tasks and
that the purpose of a pitch is to attract development finance to pay for the production of the film.
Therefore, a pitch should be marketable and interesting. As pitching is commonly known as "selling
the film", there are several things I need to consider in my pitch so that it can attract the investors

Posters play a very important role in the film industry. Through the production work, which
required me to design and create at least three posters featuring my film, I've learned that the

teaser posters and character posters. Lobby cards are like posters but they are smaller and

A major change that has occurred in the development of film is the linearity of narrative. The history
of film spans over one hundred years ago, with classical narrative emerging in Hollywood around the
nineteen thirties. The classical narrative period had a strong emphasis on linearity and coherence,
where characters where goal centred and consistent in personality and action. In the nineteen sixties a

"A tale as old as time..."
A story that everyone knows and loves, Beauty and the Beast (2017) takes a modern turn on an old
tale. Director Bill Condon beautifully portrays a monstrous beast falling in love with a local
intelligent woman. Belle (Emma Watson) and the Beast (Dan Stevens) exquisitely show that even
the most unlikely of creatures can overcome tough obstacles to find true love. Screenwriters (Evan
Spiliotopoulos and Stephen Chbosky) along with Condon make this story truly come to life with
their brilliant imagination for this film. Belle is an intelligent local who loves to read, while the

The mob that Gaston has rounded together heads to the Beast's castle, and many suspenseful
events take place here. Belle finally gets to the castle after Gaston locks her and her father in a
cell, and she finds the Beast on the floor with a wound from a knife. Belle confesses her feelings to
Beast which breaks his curse. This film was made to perfection, reciting almost every detail from
the original movie. This film took "romance" to a whole new level while including modern
technology to make this film have a better storyline and improved picture.
The theme of this movie is definitely that love is the world's most powerful gift. Not only in the
case of Belle with the Beast, but with her father as well. She traded places with him when the Beast
took Belle's father Maurice (Kevin Kline) as his prisoner. But most importantly, the Beast came over
all odds and fell in love with a smart and caring woman despite his outside appearance. Some film
techniques that Condon uses are cinematography, music and lighting that really pulls this movie into
becoming a blockbuster hit. Director Condon uses excellent cinematography throughout the entire
film. From how lifelike the servants look, along with the Beast's realistic features is truly a work of

Even if one plans on becoming a director and not a screenwriter one needs to know what kind of
scripts to look for. This is very important for a beginning small movie director since the reader will
most likely be writing their own scripts to get some recognition. A script is a document that
outlines every aural, visual, behavioral, and lingual element required to tell a story, according to
the dictionary definition at www.Wikidpedia.org. It is crucial to remember that film is a visual
medium. One doesn't tell the audience the story, one shows them. So what one will be writing is
