2. ABSTRACT
Sand casting process involves many parameters such as size of the sand grain, amount of clay,
percentage of moisture, green compressive strength, permeability, number of ramming, shatter index,
mold type, mold hardness, etc. Aluminum is one of the significant and widely used metals in the
manufacturing industries. The effectiveness of casting processes depends upon various process parameters. The
main objective of this seminar work is to study the effect of different casting input process parameters namely
pouring temperature, cooling time, mould hardness, sand particle size, pouring speed etc. on mechanical
properties like Tensile strength, hardness, Impact strength etc. on Aluminium light metal. From the literature
survey it is evident that there are so many casting process parameters which directly influence the mechanical
properties of aluminum. Hence proper selection of parameters are necessary and optimizing of the process
parameter is very important in casting process. So in order to optimize the process parameters so many authors
used Taguchi technique.

3. INTRODUCTION
CASTING: Casting is a manufacturing process in which a liquid material is usually poured into
a mold, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and then allowed to solidify. The
solidified part is also known as a casting, which is ejected or broken out of the mold to complete
the process.

10. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Green sand casting process involves many process parameters which affect
the quality of the casting produced. The quality of any casting material is influenced
by varying process parameters. Among these parameters, there must be one or
two that have the most influence. It has been realized that the full economic
and technical potential of any manufacturing process can be achieved only
when the process runs with the optimum parameters, Hence optimization of
process parameters are required for casting.
10
11. OBJECTIVES
• To study the effect different casting process parameters on mechanical properties
of aluminium material.
• To minimize the casting defects by selecting optimized values for parameters.
11
12. POSSIBLE OUTCOME
From the study is evident that the following results may achieve.
• Casting defects can be decreased by selecting appropriate parameters
• By selecting correct parameters the mechanical properties of aluminium can
enhanced.
• The tensile strength of the aluminium can be increased by increasing the pouring
temperature while casting process.
12
13. CONCLUSION
From this seminar report one can conclude that
• Still more research work has to be done for investigating the effect of casting
process parameters on mechanical properties of aluminium material.
• Many authors used Taguchi optimization technique to optimize the parameters for
better mechanical properties.
