2. Previously called Levi, who, being invited by Jesus to follow
him, left his office as a publican or tax collector and, was
chosen to be an apostles. He wrote a gospel in which it is
proclaimed that Jesus Christ is the son of David, the son
of Abraham, the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
3. Etymologically: Matthew = gift of God, comes from the
Hebrew language. He was a tax collector, a position much
hated by the Jews, because those taxes were collected for a
foreign nation. The publicans or tax collectors got rich easily.
4. Perhaps Matthew was attracted by the idea of getting rich quickly, but once he met
Jesus Christ he already left his ambition for money forever and dedicated himself
completely to seeking the salvation of souls and the Kingdom of God.
5. Matthew worked in Capernaum, where Jesus spent many
days and worked wonderful miracles. Matthew must have
already heard him several times and had been impressed
by the presence and speech of this formidable Master.
6.
7. Mountain of the Beatitudes
View of Lake Galilee from the mountain
8. One day, while he was in his collection office, perhaps thinking
about what he should do in the future, he saw none other than
the Divine Master appear in front of him, who made him a
totally unexpected proposal: "Come and follow me."
9. Matthew accepted without further ado the invitation of Jesus and renouncing
his own productive employment he went with Him, not to gain money, but souls.
10. Saint Jerome
says that the call
of Jesus to
Matthew is a
lesson for all the
sinners of the
world to know
that, whatever
the life they have
led up to now, on
any day and at
any hour they
can dedicate
themselves to
serving Christ,
and He gladly
accepts them.
11. Matthew arranged to say goodbye to his life as a public sevant
by giving a big lunch to all his friends, and the guest of honor
was none other than Jesus. And with Him, his apostles.
12. Since the principle sinners and publicans gathered there, the
Pharisees were horribly scandalized and called several of the
apostles to protest such behaviour of their chief. "How is it
that his teacher dares to eat with publicans and sinners?"
13. Jesus responded to these protests of the Pharisees:
"Those who are healthy do not need a doctor, but those who
are sick. I have not come to look for saints but sinners”.
14. Since then Matthew was always at Jesus' side. He witnesses his
miracles, heard his wise sermons and collaborated with him,
preaching and catechizing in the towns, and organizing the crowds,
when they are still eager to hear the great prophet of Nazareth.
15. Jesus nominated
him as one of his
12 favourites,
whom he called
apostles
(or envoys, or
ambassadors)
and at Pentecost
he received the
Holy Spirit in the
form of tongues
of fire.
16. The Jews gave him 39 lashes for preaching
that Jesus had risen from the dead
17. When the terrible persecution broke out against the Christians in
Jerusalem, Mateo went abroad to evangelize, and they say that
he preached in Ethiopia and that he was martyred there.
18. Almost all ancient
writers mention
he went to Ethiopia
to the south of
the Caspian Sea
(not Ethiopia in Africa),
and some Persia and
the kingdom of the
Parthians,
Macedonia,
and Syria
19. There is a disagreement as to the place of St. Matthew's martyrdom and
the kind of torture inflicted on him, therefore it is not known whether he
was burned, stoned, or beheaded. The Roman Martyrology simply says:
"S. Matthæi, qui in Æthiopia prædicans martyrium passus est".
20. Saint Matthew in his gospel narrates the famous sermons of Jesus,
for example. the Sermon on the Mount, the Sermon on the Parables
21. and also the instructions to the apostles
when he sent them on the first mission.
24. His gospel ends by telling of Christ’s glorious resurrection.
25. The purpose of the Gospel of Saint Matthew is to prove that Jesus Christ is
indeed the Messiah or Savior announced by the prophets and by the Old
Testament. This gospel was written especially for the Jews who were converting
to Christianity, and for this reason it was written in their language, Aramaic.
26. Each of the 4 evangelists is represented by one of the 4 living
beings that, according to the prophet, accompany the Son of man
1 - (a lion: courage. - 2 - The bull: strength.
3 - The eagle: the high flights. - 4 - And man: intelligence).
27. 1 - Saint Mark is
represented with a lion.
2-To San Lucas with a bull
(because he begins the gospel
of him narrating the sacrifice of
a beef that they were offering
in the temple).
3 - To Saint John through the
eagle, because this gospel is
the one that has risen the
highest in his thoughts
and writings.
4- Saint Matthew is painted
with an angel in the form of a
man next to him, because his
gospel begins by listing the
ancestorsof Jesus as a man,
and narrating the appearance
ofan angel to Saint Joseph.
28. He was also amongst the Apostles who were present at the Ascension, and
afterwards withdrew to an upper chamber, in Jerusalem, praying in union
with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and with his brethren (Acts 1:10 and 1:14).
32. In the "Evangelia apocrypha"
(Leipzig, 1876), Tischendorf
reproduced a Latin document
entitled: "De Ortu beatæ
Mariæ et infantia Salvatoris",
supposedly written in Hebrew
by St. Matthew the Evangelist,
and translated into Latin by
Jerome, the priest. -
It is an abridged adaptation
of the "Protoevangelium" of
St. James, which was a Greek
apocryphal of the second
century. This pseudo-Matthew
dates from the middle or the
end of the sixth century.
33. The Latin Church
celebrates the feast
of St. Matthew on 21
September, and the
Greek Church on
16 November.
St. Matthew is
represented under the
symbol of a winged
man, carrying in his
hand a lance as a
characteristic
emblem.
