SAINT JOHN, APOSTLE and EVANGELIST
His name, typically Hebrew, means "the Lord has given his grace."
He was fixing the nets on the shores of Lake Tiberias, when Jesus
called him together with his brother (Cf. Matthew 4, 21; Mark 1, 19).
James and John
were probably
disciples of John
the Baptist, and
were called by
Christ from John's
circle of followers,
along with Peter
and Andrew,
to become
His disciples
(John 1:35-42).
John part was part of the restricted group that Jesus took with him on
certain occasions. - He is with Peter and James when Jesus, in Capernaum,
enters Peter's house to heal his mother-in-law (Cf. Mark 1, 29);
He followed the Master into the house of the head of the synagogue,
Jairus, whose daughter Jesus called back to life (Cf. Mark 5, 37);
John followed Jesus when he ascended the mountain to be transfigured (Cf. Mark 9, 2);
John's older brother was James the Great, another of the
Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Jesus referred to the brothers as
"Boanerges", which means "sons of thunder".
Jesus called James and John
"sons of thunder" (Mark 3:17).
James and John possessed
some truly thunder-like qualities.
Jesus and his disciples were
traveling through Samaria on the
way to Jerusalem and tried to find
lodgings to spend the night in a
town, but they were met with
opposition from the villagers,
simply because His destination
was Jerusalem—as a result of
Jewish-Samaritan prejudice.
“When the disciples James and
John saw this, they asked him,
'Lord, do you want us to call fire
from heaven to destroy them?'”
(Luke 9:54). Jesus rebuked the
brothers and they all left
for another village
The Mother
of the Zebedees
approached
Jesus to ask that
her two sons,
John and James,
might sit one on
his right and the
other on his left
in His Kingdom
(Cf. Matthew 20, 20-21).
John was by Christ’s side on the Mount of Olives when in
front of the imposing Temple of Jerusalem he delivered the
speech on the end of the city and the world (Cf. Mark 13:3);
Shortly before Easter, when Jesus chose two
disciples to prepare the room for the Supper, he
entrusted this task to John and Peter (Cf. Luke 22,8).
According to tradition, John is "the favorite disciple",
who in the fourth Gospel placed his head on the
Master's chest during the Last Supper (cf. John 13:21),
John is close to
Christ when in
the Garden of
Gethsemane he
withdrew to
pray to the
Father, before
His Passion
(Cf. Mark 14, 33).
.
John was also that "other disciple" who with
Peter followed Christ after the arrest to the
high priest's palace (John 18:15).
He is found
at the foot
of the Cross
next to the
Mother of
Jesus
(Cf. John 19, 25).
John with Peter
was the first of
the disciples to
rush to the
grave and was
the first to
believe that
Christ had
truly risen
(John 20:2-10).
He witnesses both the empty tomb and the
very presence of the Risen One (John 20, 2; 21, 7)
We find the "sons of Zebedee" fishing with Peter and others
in a night without results, but after the intervention of the
Risen Lord, there came the miraculous catch:
«the disciple
whom Jesus
loved» was the
first to recognize
the «Lord» in
His appearance
on the shore of
lake Galilee and
to point Him
out to Peter
(Cf. John 21, 1-13).
Luke, in the
Acts of the
Apostles,
presents him
with Peter
while they
go to pray in
the Temple
(Acts 3, 1-4.11)
We see him in the company of Peter in the
healing of the lame man in the temple (Acts 3:1 -).
With Peter he is also thrown into prison (Acts 4:3).
He appeared before the Sanhedrin with Peter to
testify of his faith in Jesus Christ (Cf. Acts 4, 13.19).
He is next to
Peter, before
the Sanhedrin,
during the
trial and says
"We cannot
stop talking
about what
we have seen
and heard"
(Acts 4, 20).
Within the Church of Jerusalem, John held an important position in the
leadership of the first group of Christians. Paul, in fact, places him
among what he calls the "pillars" of that community (Cf. Galatians 2:9).
with the prince of the
Apostles he visited the newly
converted in Samaria
(Acts 8,14)
Together with Peter, he receives the invitation from the Church of
Jerusalem to confirm those who welcomed the Gospel in Samaria,
praying over them so that they receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8, 14-15).
Apparently John, along with the other Apostles, remained for
about twelve years in this first field of work, until the persecution
of Herod Agrippa I caused the dispersion of the Apostles
throughout the various provinces of the Roman Empire (Hch 12, 1-17)
In the apocryphal "Acts of John" the apostle is not presented as a founder
of Churches, not even as a leader of a constituted community, but as a
continuous itinerant, in Asia Minor, a communicator of the faith in the
encounter with "souls capable of hoping for salvation" (Acts 18, 10; 23, 8).
He is driven by the paradoxical desire to make the invisible visible.
Acts 18, 10; 23,The Eastern Church calls him simply "the Theologian”
He took charge of the desolate Mother
as the last legacy of Christ (Jn 19, 25-27)
John and Mary sail to Ephesus
According to one
Church tradition, John
cared for Mary until
her Assumption.
Ephesus, where according to an ancient tradition,
He lived for a long time, dying at an extraordinarily
Later he was banished by
the Roman authorities to
the Greek island of Patmos;
where he wrote the Book of
Revelation. He had been
banished there at the
end of the first century,
during the reign of
Emperor Domitian,
He returned with the other disciples to
Jerusalem for the Apostolic Council (around AD 51)
The "beloved disciple" died in Ephesus after AD 98, where a
majestic church was erected over his tomb. Later it was
converted into a Mohammedan mosque.
The death and
burial of the
apostle John.
In Ephesus, the Emperor
Justinian, in the sixth
century, built a great
basilica in his honor.
John is known as
the author of the
Gospel of John
and four other
books in the
New Testament:
the three Epistles
of John and the
Book of Revelation
John is the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships, and authors.
He is often depicted in art as the author of the Gospel with an eagle,
symbolizing the height to which he rose in his knowledge of Christ.
the book of
Revelation or
Apocalypse
deals with
the visions of
the saint of
Christian
eschatology
He constantly
repeated words
of exhortation
at the end
of his life:
"Little children,
love one
another.”
(Jerome, "Comm. in
ep. ad. Gal.", vi, 10)
According to Irenaeus, John refused to remain under the
same roof as the heretic Cerinthus (Irenaeus "Ad. haer.", III, iii, 4);
Clement describes
John's touching
anxiety for a
youth who had
become a thief.
(Clemens Alex.,
"Quis dives
salvetur", xiii);

SAINT JOHN, APOSTLE and EVANGELIST.pptx

  • 1. SAINT JOHN, APOSTLE and EVANGELIST
  • 2. His name, typically Hebrew, means "the Lord has given his grace." He was fixing the nets on the shores of Lake Tiberias, when Jesus called him together with his brother (Cf. Matthew 4, 21; Mark 1, 19).
  • 3. James and John were probably disciples of John the Baptist, and were called by Christ from John's circle of followers, along with Peter and Andrew, to become His disciples (John 1:35-42).
  • 4. John part was part of the restricted group that Jesus took with him on certain occasions. - He is with Peter and James when Jesus, in Capernaum, enters Peter's house to heal his mother-in-law (Cf. Mark 1, 29);
  • 5. He followed the Master into the house of the head of the synagogue, Jairus, whose daughter Jesus called back to life (Cf. Mark 5, 37);
  • 6. John followed Jesus when he ascended the mountain to be transfigured (Cf. Mark 9, 2);
  • 7. John's older brother was James the Great, another of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Jesus referred to the brothers as "Boanerges", which means "sons of thunder".
  • 8. Jesus called James and John "sons of thunder" (Mark 3:17). James and John possessed some truly thunder-like qualities. Jesus and his disciples were traveling through Samaria on the way to Jerusalem and tried to find lodgings to spend the night in a town, but they were met with opposition from the villagers, simply because His destination was Jerusalem—as a result of Jewish-Samaritan prejudice. “When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked him, 'Lord, do you want us to call fire from heaven to destroy them?'” (Luke 9:54). Jesus rebuked the brothers and they all left for another village
  • 9. The Mother of the Zebedees approached Jesus to ask that her two sons, John and James, might sit one on his right and the other on his left in His Kingdom (Cf. Matthew 20, 20-21).
  • 10. John was by Christ’s side on the Mount of Olives when in front of the imposing Temple of Jerusalem he delivered the speech on the end of the city and the world (Cf. Mark 13:3);
  • 11. Shortly before Easter, when Jesus chose two disciples to prepare the room for the Supper, he entrusted this task to John and Peter (Cf. Luke 22,8).
  • 12. According to tradition, John is "the favorite disciple", who in the fourth Gospel placed his head on the Master's chest during the Last Supper (cf. John 13:21),
  • 13.
  • 14. John is close to Christ when in the Garden of Gethsemane he withdrew to pray to the Father, before His Passion (Cf. Mark 14, 33). .
  • 15. John was also that "other disciple" who with Peter followed Christ after the arrest to the high priest's palace (John 18:15).
  • 16. He is found at the foot of the Cross next to the Mother of Jesus (Cf. John 19, 25).
  • 17. John with Peter was the first of the disciples to rush to the grave and was the first to believe that Christ had truly risen (John 20:2-10).
  • 18. He witnesses both the empty tomb and the very presence of the Risen One (John 20, 2; 21, 7)
  • 19. We find the "sons of Zebedee" fishing with Peter and others in a night without results, but after the intervention of the Risen Lord, there came the miraculous catch:
  • 20. «the disciple whom Jesus loved» was the first to recognize the «Lord» in His appearance on the shore of lake Galilee and to point Him out to Peter (Cf. John 21, 1-13).
  • 21. Luke, in the Acts of the Apostles, presents him with Peter while they go to pray in the Temple (Acts 3, 1-4.11)
  • 22. We see him in the company of Peter in the healing of the lame man in the temple (Acts 3:1 -).
  • 23. With Peter he is also thrown into prison (Acts 4:3).
  • 24. He appeared before the Sanhedrin with Peter to testify of his faith in Jesus Christ (Cf. Acts 4, 13.19).
  • 25. He is next to Peter, before the Sanhedrin, during the trial and says "We cannot stop talking about what we have seen and heard" (Acts 4, 20).
  • 26. Within the Church of Jerusalem, John held an important position in the leadership of the first group of Christians. Paul, in fact, places him among what he calls the "pillars" of that community (Cf. Galatians 2:9).
  • 27. with the prince of the Apostles he visited the newly converted in Samaria (Acts 8,14)
  • 28. Together with Peter, he receives the invitation from the Church of Jerusalem to confirm those who welcomed the Gospel in Samaria, praying over them so that they receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8, 14-15).
  • 29. Apparently John, along with the other Apostles, remained for about twelve years in this first field of work, until the persecution of Herod Agrippa I caused the dispersion of the Apostles throughout the various provinces of the Roman Empire (Hch 12, 1-17)
  • 30. In the apocryphal "Acts of John" the apostle is not presented as a founder of Churches, not even as a leader of a constituted community, but as a continuous itinerant, in Asia Minor, a communicator of the faith in the encounter with "souls capable of hoping for salvation" (Acts 18, 10; 23, 8).
  • 31. He is driven by the paradoxical desire to make the invisible visible. Acts 18, 10; 23,The Eastern Church calls him simply "the Theologian”
  • 32. He took charge of the desolate Mother as the last legacy of Christ (Jn 19, 25-27) John and Mary sail to Ephesus
  • 33. According to one Church tradition, John cared for Mary until her Assumption.
  • 34. Ephesus, where according to an ancient tradition, He lived for a long time, dying at an extraordinarily
  • 35. Later he was banished by the Roman authorities to the Greek island of Patmos; where he wrote the Book of Revelation. He had been banished there at the end of the first century, during the reign of Emperor Domitian,
  • 36. He returned with the other disciples to Jerusalem for the Apostolic Council (around AD 51)
  • 37. The "beloved disciple" died in Ephesus after AD 98, where a majestic church was erected over his tomb. Later it was converted into a Mohammedan mosque.
  • 38. The death and burial of the apostle John.
  • 39. In Ephesus, the Emperor Justinian, in the sixth century, built a great basilica in his honor.
  • 40. John is known as the author of the Gospel of John and four other books in the New Testament: the three Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation
  • 41. John is the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships, and authors. He is often depicted in art as the author of the Gospel with an eagle, symbolizing the height to which he rose in his knowledge of Christ.
  • 42. the book of Revelation or Apocalypse deals with the visions of the saint of Christian eschatology
  • 43. He constantly repeated words of exhortation at the end of his life: "Little children, love one another.” (Jerome, "Comm. in ep. ad. Gal.", vi, 10)
  • 44. According to Irenaeus, John refused to remain under the same roof as the heretic Cerinthus (Irenaeus "Ad. haer.", III, iii, 4);
  • 45. Clement describes John's touching anxiety for a youth who had become a thief. (Clemens Alex., "Quis dives salvetur", xiii);
