Physical Activity on the Skeletal and muscular
systems with reference to lifelong involvement in an
active lifestyle.
Different types of physical Activity (you must include examples):
Contact sports.
High impact sport.
Repetitive action sports.
Impact on the skeletal System:
Osteoporosis (describe what osteoporosis is and the causes of).
Impact sports can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. (sporting example)
Osteoarthritis (description of the breakdown of cartilage).
Repetitive sports can cause Osteoarthritis (sporting example)
Growth Plate injuries – overuse injuries caused by repetitive physical activity.
Joint stability – ligaments/tendons – Overuse of high impact and repetitive activities
can reduce the strength of ligaments/tendons. Where as a balanced active lifestyle
(give examples of sport) can strengthen tendons and ligaments.
Muscular system:
Posture – strength training with improve muscle tone and posture/aerobic exercise can
control body weight making it easier to control the bodies alignment and posture.
Hypertrophy – strength.
Increased Myoglobin.
Increased Mitochondrial density.
Increased Flexibility/elasticity.
