Frame Rates & Video Formatting
2. Frame Rate
(Frame rate, also known as “FPS” (Frames Per Second) is the frequency rate where a
television, computer, iPad etc. produces images called frames. )
Television
UK: PAL (Phase Alternating Line) goes by the rate of 25 fps, whereas in the US & Japan
the television broadcasting system (NTSC) go by 29.97 fps.
Film
The frame rate goes by 24 fps but can vary. For example, in the film “Hobbit” it goes
by 48 fps. This means it has twice as many frames per second. This gives it a extremely
clear picture which can be a problem because it is possible to make a picture look so
clear that is can appear to be less realistic.
3. Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio is an image projection that describes the proportional relationship
between the width of an image and its height. E.g, films, which are usually shot
with a wide-angle lens, have an aspect ratio that is usually 16:9, which means that
the width of the image area is nearly twice its height.
The traditional TV and computer display, are designed for an aspect ratio of
1.33:1, which means that the width of the display area is only 1.33 times the
height, almost square.
More modern TV displays, such as HD technology, have a widescreen format with
an aspect ratio of 16:9.
4. Resolution
The main reason to why high definition TV pictures look so much sharper and clearer
than a regular TV is that HDTV's higher resolution.
Today TVs, resolution is measured in pixels, with more pixels providing higher
resolution.
Old-fashioned TVs had around 300,000 pixels, while today's modern HD TVs have one
to two million. All those additional pixels mean a big jump in picture quality.
5. Compression
TV pictures contain a lot of information and often have to be reduced before being
recorded or transmitted. This is done by a technique known as compression.
Compression techniques take away some of the information which isn't needed or has
little effect on how we perceive the compressed image.
Compression ratio is a measure of the amount of compression taking place and
refers to the relationship between the number of bits entering a 'compression engine'
and the number of bits coming out the other side.
7. Film & title sequence/graphics
“Breaking Bad”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDFAYRtrYuk
In this title sequence a periodic table has been used to make the title. From the periodic
table the letters “BR” and “BA” have been used as it is a symbol for the element of the
show.
The use of a periodic table is relevant to the show as Walt the main character is a chemistry
teacher that retired cooks chrystal meth, so the title has a big relation to the show.
Motion Graphics: Channel 4

As you can see, channel 4 have created the illusion of the number 4 appearing in
the air as random objects. This is one of many that channel 4 have made.
8. Computer Game
Grand theft auto 5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaztZ5aly5U
In the new GTA the graphics appear much clearer and realistic compared to all of the
others.
You can do almost everything that you do in day to day life which makes it even better,
for example:
• Car insurance
• Visits to the ATM machine
• Your own pet
• Going to the bar for a drink
There are many more things in the game that make it so unique to others as you can
roam around as if it were real life, this game happens to be the most realistic.
