1. A collaborative program with Gateway Greening, the City Seeds Urban Farm program is a therapeutic intervention for clients of
St. Patrick Center who are experiencing homelessness, mental health issues and/or substance abuse issues.
The 2.5 acre City Seeds Urban Farm is located near Union Station in downtown St. Louis. This 15-week program teaches ten
clients how to grow food and improve nutrition literacy and connects to their recovery goals through the 12 Steps of Gardening,
nature journaling, maintaining personal beds and working together eight hours a week at the City Seeds Urban Farm. Client-farmers
attend monthly nutrition/cooking classes, lectures from guest speakers, field trips and monthly progress meetings. Clients
attain their personal goals, while supervising volunteers, staffing the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market booth, attending plant biology
and horticulture therapy classes and learning about sustainable agriculture.
Annually, 10,000 lbs of produce is grown on the farm and distributed to St. Patrick Center clients, farmer’s market customers and
people who receive frozen prepared meals from Food Outreach, an organization that provides nutritional support to people living
with HIV/AIDS or cancer. In its six year history, the City Seeds Urban Farm program has harnessed the power of 242
hardworking men and women to help address issues of food security in the St. Louis area.
In FY10, 18 clients participated in this hands-on job training program led by Gateway Greening. 9 graduated and 9 found jobs.
