1. Voorwoord
Werkondernemers dus!

2. Foreword
At large conferences the European leaders are trying to defuse the bank crisis with guarantees of billions, but despite
these good intentions, it is Merkel‟s blazer which she wore on her visit to Greece, which suddenly had an impact no one
could have predicted. The candidates for the presidency in the United States spend millions on election strategies, but I
don‟t think anyone anticipated the impact the remark about Big Bird would have. We all try to have an impact and we all
try to do that in such a way, that the impact occurs exactly where we want it to. But it remains difficult to direct.
Sometimes we go at it full force and our efforts are undone by an apparently small matter. The reverse is also true, by
the way. Herz once discovered an oscillator to generate electromagnetic waves, but he did not think this invention would
have any impact.
I began my ponderings on impact during the „On the way home session‟ („Onderweg Naar Huis Sessie‟), organised by TMC
Manufacturing Support. How is it that the statement made by the chair of the day, Charles Groenhuijsen, that
“journalists are not interested in good news”, which was apparently made in passing, still had impact? Probably because
this man is a long serving professional. But then that explanation does not fit with regards to Frank Coerver, a colleague
far too young to be a long serving professional, but who had a powerful impact on his audience in a speech lasting only
two minutes. Is it authentic, heartfelt enthusiasm?
It takes a complex combination of factors to create impact. There must be a sound plan, which incorporates sufficient
knowledge and skills; let us call it a professional approach. Consequently this plan must be executed expeditiously; with
perseverance. And last but not least, it must all be carried out with a heartfelt intention to decisively engage in
interaction with the people who need to be involved in all of this:
the Employeneurs!

3. Benefit Shop
Shop.

4. Benefit Shop
Implementation: In the past weeks a lot of effort has been put into producing both the functional and technical design
for the Benefit Shop, which resulted in the delivery of the final designs last week. These documents form the basis for
the configuration of the Benefit Shop software; the interface with AFAS and the setup of a network connection between
TMC and Tasper. The Benefit Shop is presented via an SAAS (Software As A Service) solution, which means that the
Benefit Shop software is hosted by Tasper in a data centre and TMC staff will have access to the Benefit Shop via the TMC
SharePoint portal. An SSO (Single Sign On) method will also be presented to ensure that TMC employees have direct
access to the Benefit Shop. This method has the advantage that, once logged on to SharePoint, a separate logon to the
Benefit Shop is not needed.
Testing: Once the configuration of the Benefit Shop and AFAS software has been completed, testing by the user can
commence. As the Benefit Shop will deal with some of the employee‟s contractual terms of employment, it is of the
utmost importance that testing is carried out carefully and thoroughly.
A test team will be formed, consisting of office managers, internal staff and Employeneurs. This team will set up test
scenarios, based on the design documentation, and those scenarios will be executed in the Benefit Shop test
environment. The purpose of this User Acceptance Test (UAT) is to assess whether the Benefit Shop works according to
the design. If testing is successful, the test phase will be officially signed off. The UAT sign off is an important project
milestone for the successful delivery of the Benefit Shop.

5. TMC YOUniversity
We

6. TMC YOUniversity
Stormy weather The project to launch the TMC YOUniversity is caught up in stormy weather. So much so, in fact,
that we will not make the planned introduction on 1 January 2013. Although hindsight serves no other purpose than to
learn from it, the delay is perfectly explainable. We have had too many changes in owners and project leaders, which
has meant we have had to endure a learning curve more than once. This means we have shifted our priorities and
approach more than once, as well.
Specifications At the same time it is fair to establish that priorities and approach could only be changed because the
specifics at the front end had not yet been crystallised out. In other words: we did see (and do see) the bigger picture,
but we still need to be concrete on the details.
Crisis and opportunity Apparently, in certain languages, the word crisis is equal to opportunity. Having Pieter van
Hoogstraten start work with us certainly does feel like an opportunity. We have the opportunity to have Pieter work out
every detail of the bigger picture and he has a proven track record in this field. In addition, he may use his considerable
experience to enhance the existing YOUniversity ideas with the latest state of the art instruments, which enable
everyone to optimise their own personal development.
In summary We are dealing with a project delay and that is nothing to be proud of. We will take our loss and seize
the opportunity to come back in force.

9. Onderweg Naar Huis Sessie
koop is.
verschillende technische disciplines samenwerken.

11. On the way home session
„Entrepreneurial collaboration‟ was the theme of the On the way home session (Onderweg naar Huis Sessie) organised by
TMC Manufacturing Support at the conference centre on the Strip of the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven on 8 October
2012.
During the session three topics were discussed, alternated with „two minute pitches‟. Frank Coerver kicked off. As an
Employeneur, he explained his project at Bosch Transmission Technology. The second pitch, by Remco Dieperink, was an
interesting account of the effect the economic crisis has on an entrepreneur.
The presentation on the Fonckel is a shining example of collaboration in the region. The lamp is controlled by simple
hand movements: you can direct the beam and set the intensity of the light and the width of the beam. Philip Ross‟
doctoral research at the TU/e formed the basis of this development. After many years, the time has finally arrived: the
necessary technology has been incorporated into the lamp, which is now on sale for € 699.-. Employeneur Bert Stohr
played a major part in developing the supply chain, in which many different technical disciplines work together. The
interaction technology „Lumotion‟ will lead to revolutionary lighting concepts for business applications in the medical
sector and the automotive industry, for example. “The future lies more in that than in the Fonckel One itself”, Stohr
believes. The power of the network, trust in one another and good communication have been key”, according to Stohr.
The Brainport presentation offered more insight into the shift from „traditional outsourcing‟ to „entrepreneurial
collaboration‟. Collaborating suppliers in the region contribute to the success of leading companies such as ASML, Philips,
FEI and Océ. This was contended by Managing Director John Blankendaal of Brainport Industries, a collaboration of 85
first, second and third line high-tech suppliers.
Key concepts: great involvement of the suppliers at an early stage in new developments; mutual trust; equality of the
partners; mutual dependency; sharing of risk and proceeds; sharing of knowledge and intellectual property. In other
12. words: “This is something quite different to the old billing per hour. Sometimes it is about crying together, but usually it
is about laughing together.”
In the final pitch Gerard Lenssen, director of Fontys Business Management, Education and Technology, drew attention to
the falling number of students in the technology and engineering teacher training degree programme. Various parties
shall have to join forces in order to boost this number.
The third presenter of the afternoon was Thomas Luiten, Operational Director of hearth manufacturer Interfocos and a
specialist in the field of Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM). Human collaboration is also an important issue in the
battle for an acceleration of the lead time. Less management and overhead also contribute.
The On the way home session 2012 was a tremendously successful event, which conclusion can only be: “It‟s all about
people.”

Mensen willen in toenemende
disciplines.
Back to the drawing
board!
Mind over matter!

15. Games and gadgets
Games and gadgets are becoming increasingly popular. They are more diverse in their hardware and software and more
readily available, as well. Tablets are an example of this, but so are other technical innovations which are used more for
hobbies, such as robots, the Arduino, the Raspberry Pi or the 3D printer. People increasingly wish to be entertained and
people appear to be more willing to reach into their pockets.
TMC and dominoes?
One initiative to promote TMC‟s name recognition at trade fairs, is the TMC Eye Catcher. The Eye Catcher is an example
of an Entrepreneurial Lab project. The Eye Catcher and the Entrepreneurial Lab can both serve as a platform for
research and development of upcoming technical trends. There was an Eye Cather project within the Entrepreneurial Lab
in 2010, named “Air Hockey”, and now there is a new Eye Catcher project which goes by the name of “Domino Race”.
Our project has a duration of approximately one year and there are ten people working on it, from all disciplines. We
bring our ideas together once a week, in a “workshop meeting”.
Let me take you back in time. Let us suppose we take a photograph of a visitor to a fair and we then display this photo
on domino tiles in a grid of forty by forty, as the rows of dominoes fall, one at a time. After researching the best way to
do this, it turns out that sixteen hundred domino tiles are a little too much of a good thing. It has become an industrial
problem and the interaction with the visitor is non-existing. This concept is supposed to be more of a „show‟, after all.
Back to the drawing board! What can we do with less tiles? A „domino race‟ whereby we let two rows of two hundred
tiles each fall. By using a long and short stroke x,y-positioner stage with coil(s), the tiles are erected again! You
influence the speed of fall with brain-waves, using a Neurosky headset. Let‟s get cracking with proto1! Erecting one tile
with a piece of metal magnetically, takes approximately one second, while it takes only approximately 25 milliseconds
for it to fall. The reliability and velocity are therefore too critical to solve within the scope of the project. In order to
work on all these problems, we go for a beer at the TMC pub! A new idea is born. Each stone is now controlled
individually. Sixteen autonomous, remotely controllable tiles, which fall at a much lower speed with the aid of mass
inertia.
16. The interaction with the brain control is now also clearly visible. Interestingly enough we went from sixteen hundred to
two hundred, to sixteen; we may have only one tile left by the end of the project, but it will be super cool and high-
tech, our WOW factor!
With this project we are setting the trend for the new TMC gadget, so come take a look and join in! Mind over matter!

17. Masterclass
reden ontwikkeltrajecten niet altijd even optimaal verlopen.
We

18. Master Class
This time last year we came up with the idea of developing a training programme, offering a maximum of fifteen people
the unique opportunity to take part in a special technical training, focusing on high-tech development. We believed
there was a great demand for this, but it could not be sufficiently met within the TMC Academy.
In a considerable number of evening sessions, we spoke with experienced Employeneurs about the form such a course
should take. The one thing we all soon agreed on, was that not all disciplines speak the same ‟language‟ and that
development programmes do not always run smoothly for that reason. As almost every development nowadays is a
multidisciplinary matter, it was important to at least create understanding for each other‟s area of expertise. We made
the choice to begin with the cells which operate mainly in the high-tech sector, which are Physics, Mechatronics,
Electronics, Mechanical and Embedded Software. During a programme such as this, there are several roles to be fulfilled,
each with their own interests and considerations, but all with the same final objective. Despite this, the project
managers, lead engineers and the commercial techies do not always appear to want to understand each other. That set
us a complex challenge right at the start. This describes in short the objectives of the first two stages of the Master
Class. Both were aimed at offering knowledge, insight and understanding.
At the beginning of this year we began developing and planning the sessions. Every last Thursday and Friday of the
month, we have two days of lessons at the TMC office, taught by our highly experienced mediors and seniors. We have
already had four sessions and we have another two to go in stage one. The next stage will begin sometime next year and
is being prepared now. In May 2013 we will start with a new group… I hope the next group will be as enthusiastic as the
first one.
