- Definition:-
A person who is suffering from illness and registered to
receive medical treatment from doctor.

-Illness is a state in which the physical, social,
developmental, intellectual, emotional or spiritual
functioning of the individual is diminished or
impaired.
-Acute illness

11. ACUTE ILLNESS
- Short duration
- Mostly severe
- Starts abruptly and subsides within the short period (6
months)
CHRONIC ILLNESS
- Persist for more than 6 months
- May affect the functioning of the body in any dimention
- Upto the level of disability
- Major health problem

- Any action or reaction of an individual who feels
unwell for the purpose of defining their state of health
and obtaining physical or emotional relief from acute
illness.

accustomed environment.
-Their valuables and their cloths have been taken away
from them, and they feel “miserable, scared,

16. STAGES of Illness Behaviour
5 Stages of Illness behaviour
1) STAGE I- Symptom Experience
- Person feels that something is wrong in his body.
- Perceptions of the symptoms like pain, rashes, lumps, fever,
cold, cold etc.
- It is a symptom of an illness.
17. STAGE II- Assumption of Sick Role
- If the symptoms persist then the persons assumes that he is
suffering from the illness.
- Then he gets excuse from his normal duties and role.
- Emotional changes such as withdrawal, depression, physical
changes etc.
- The person may approach to the healthcare system.
18. STAGE III- Medical Care Contact
-Causes, duration of illness and its complication.
-Some seek medical treatment and advice but some
may refuse.
19. STAGE IV- Dependent stage
-After accepting the diagnosis, person become
dependent on healthcare professional for treatment.
-Here, the person accepts the treatment.
20. STAGE V- Recovery and Rehabilitation
-Symptoms of illness gets subsiding.
-In case of chronic illness, requires an adjustment to
prolong reduction in health and body functioning.
