Dental Coordinator Reflection
I have been working as a Dental Health Coordinator at The Dimock Center in Boston, MA since
May 11, 2017. My job responsibilities include improving dental care integration through endeavors,
such as NNOHA (National Network for Oral Health Access) Benchmark Project and Oral Health
Integration Project. The coordinating efforts include providing education and preventive treatments
to patients,, such as fluoride varnish and oral health screening in primary care; rapid referrals to the
dental department from primary care patients, pregnant women and patients with HIV. The goal is to
improve integration between the Pediatric, Adult Medicine and other departments with the Dental
department in the organization, so patients with access to primary care ... Show more content on

Dental Curing Light
RESEARCH PAPER
Innovation and quality are two goals that every dental practice always would like to reach and keep
to enhance their image in the dental field. Therefore, beyond the professional techniques of the
dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants, continuing to look for better dental equipment is the
key to drive a dental practice to its steady success. I believe, along with the growth of a general
office, a curing light is an indispensable equipment. Nowadays, there are a variety of dental curing
lights on the market. And I have seen 6 different curing lights at many different areas including PCC
dental clinic, OHSU and Glisan Dental. However, I was impressed by Valo Cordless curing light

Research Paper On Dental Sealants
If you are considering dental sealants for your child's teeth, you are probably also wondering about
child safety. Many parents are concerned about Bisphenol A (BPA) compounds, but pediatric
dentists recommend using the air–tight plastic shield to seal out plaque. The results include
dramatically less decay to biting surfaces, but will it negatively affect kids' health? While the United
States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other government agencies, describe dental
sealants as "a safe plastic coating," many still worry about the effects of these compounds. However,
BPA has been in commercial use since 1957. Research has shown BPA causes health issues with
laboratory animals, and BPA levels in humans tend to be higher than

Checkups Baby teeth lay the foundation for dental health in the future. The American Association of
Pediatric Dentist recommends that your baby see the dentist when his or her first tooth appears or,
by his or her first birthday. It is recommended that your child and adolescent see the dentist for a
check–up every 6 months to look for tooth decay, placement of the teeth, and cleaning. Sedation
Nitrous Oxide "Laughing gas" The AAPD recognizes nitrous oxide as a safe and effective technique

Athletic Mouth Guards and Teeth Grinding Guards The proper way to protect your child's teeth
during a sporting event is a custom–made mouth guard. A "boil and bite" mouth guard can offer
protection, however they will often have to be reheated and refitted. They will not provide the safety
of a tailored made mouth guard. Dental mouth guards are molded to the exact fit of your child's
teeth. There is always greater stability and protection from a form fitted protector. Bruxism, or tooth
grinding, is common in children and adolescents. If your child complains of pain in their jaw, face,
or ear we recommend a consultation for possible Bruxism. We can discuss with you the appropriate
ages for, and benefits of, wearing a night guard. Digital X–rays We have cutting edge technology
that uses the lowest radiation possible for your children. High speed film, and proper shielding
assure that your child receives a minimal amount of radiation exposure. The digital x–ray provides
nearly 80% less radiation than a standard

Carlos Smith: Dental Case Study
Seven–year–old Carlos Smith came to Universal Pediatric Dental Clinic for his first dental
appointment. During his dental visit his hygienist learned he has a sweet tooth and rather drink
juice/soda than water and never turn down candy. He is a big chocolate fan, of course the gummy
stuff, the Mike, cheerios and Ikes. His hygienist already see two area of caries on his primary teeth.
Dr. Jonathan CalBrim, suggested dental sealants, which could help keep tooth decay at Carlos'
permanent molar as well as other teeth. His parents had no idea about caries as well as sealant. His
parents have many questions and worried that information may not have been disclosed to public
about sealant. 1)What the hygienist can tell Carlos' parents about caries

Sealant In Schools
Preventing Dental Caries with School–based Sealant Program Establishing school–based sealant
program at local elementary schools through in–terpersonal communication can protect the general
population from developing dental car–ies by 60% (Oral Health 310). According to the article, Oral
Health, the prevention of dental caries in young students is essential to protecting not only dental
health but also their overall physical health as dental caries may affect their health negatively due to
built up bacteria and malnutrition caused by decreased consumption from dental pain (Oral Health
312). School aged children are the most at risk group for developing dental caries. College students
in Health Psychology could help to protect dental health of children by increasing the number that
get pit and fissure in several different ways. College students involved in a service– learning project
will be divided in to three different groups. One group will be responsible for calling the parents or
meeting with them in order to educate them and answer any questions they may have and to
schedule appointments at the school in order to apply the pit or fissure sealant. Another group will
be responsible for calling the parents back after the initial application or sealant for a follow up ...

Regional Board of Examination or Washington State local anesthesia examination for local
anesthesia, the jurisprudence examination, the National Board Dental Hygiene examination, and two

Continuing education courses are defined as formal courses for a working adult to take part in after
they have graduated and are working in their area of study. Continuing education courses are
required by law to maintain an active certificate or license in the work field and to keep the worker
up to date on his or her field of study. These courses can be taken in a variety of ways including at
home study, in person classes, volunteer work, and live online courses. Each department of study
has different requirements such as hours that should be taken and topics that should be taken
(Peterson, 2014).
Our group focused on the state of Idaho. A dental hygienist in Idaho must renew his or her license
every two years by way of continuing education. Twenty–four hours are required. Each hygienist
has his or her own expiration date depending on when their initial hire date was. The American
Dental Association offers courses on their website. They offer continuing education online and in
person. There are no requirements for a certain amount of hours on a certain topic; all self–study is
accepted, and up to ten hours of volunteer work is accepted. A CPR course is also required every
two years and hours in that course can be used toward license renewal. Continuing education credits

Dental caries experience in the primary dentition is a significant predictor of disease in the
permanent dentition. In addition, preventing dental caries in the primary dentition can prevent,
reduce and/or delay onset of disease in permanent dentition. Therefore, this can result in the
potential savings to Medicaid and CHIP.
In addition to preventing caries on 'sound' surfaces, dental sealants have also proven to help arrest
the spread of caries lesions after initiation. Sealants reduced the percentage of non–cavitated caries
lesions that progressed by 71%. Dental sealants have also proven to reduce bacterial levels; in a
recent study it was noted that sealants lowered bacteria levels by at least 100–fold (Centers for

have, it makes sense for Medicaid and/or each state's health insurance program to provide coverage

I learned in this video that a dental hygienist has to be patient and that they have to clean teeth and

A disadvantage would be that there is not a very wide variety of career expansion. An advantage
would be great salary. It can be very repetitive as a disadvantage. An advantage would be minimal
schooling.

Fluoride Treatments & Varnishes
You probably know how important fluoride is to your teeth, which is why we can offer fluoride
treatments and varnishes at your checkup. These allow fluoride to penetrate deep into the enamel,
helping to prevent tooth decay and strengthening your teeth.
Sealants
Food particles can get stuck in the grooves of your teeth, especially your molars. This attracts
harmful bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay. To avoid cavities and fillings, we can use a clear
sealant. This covers and fills in the grooves, smoothing the area out so it's not just harder for bacteria
to take hold – it's easier for you to clean the teeth at home.
Nutritional Counseling

drinks like soda are bad for your teeth. But carbohydrates found in foods like bread and rice can

Cavities Research Paper
If you have had frequent cavities for most of your life, then your biggest fear may be that bad oral
health is in your genes and your child will live a life filled with cavities, too. While no studies have
found that children can truly inherit cavities, there are ways that cavity–prone parents can pass on
their bad oral health to their children. However, the great news is that by taking the right steps now,
you can prevent this from happening. Here are two important tips for keeping cavities to yourself
and not letting your oral health affect your child's.
Know How Cavity Bacteria is Passed So You Can Stop the Cycle
If your mother had frequent cavities as well as you, then it can be easy to suspect you just have
genetically bad teeth. Parents can pass on their cavity–causing oral bacteria to their children, but it is
not their DNA that causes it. Most babies are born with a healthy oral microbiome that helps keep
cavities at bay. However, a parent can pass cavity–causing bacteria and alter the bacterial makeup of
a child's saliva for life just through wet kisses and the sharing of eating utensils. ... Show more

Occlusal Caries Development
The epidemiological studies in caries do not show a consistent distribution for all tooth surfaces.
The occlusal surface caries still show high prevalence compared to interproximal caries. The
incidence of caries in the occlusal surfaces of the teeth constitutes more than two–thirds of all caries
types. The propensity of occlusal caries to develop is closely related with the depth and morphology
of the pits and fissures. Caries development is caused by the fact that bacteria and food accumulate
in the pit and fissures and these areas cannot be cleaned properly due to the lack of both cleansing
effect of saliva and mechanical cleaning (3).
National data indicate that 80 percent of dental caries in the permanent teeth found in children is
concentrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this case, the patient should be referred to the dentist for restorative treatment. Also, it is
contraindicated if the pits and fissures on the tooth surface are well coalesced and self–cleansing;
sealants are contraindicated because such occlusal contour are at low risk of developing caries (5)
Dental sealants can be accomplished through the use of either glass ionomer sealant (GIS) or
through the use of resin based sealants (RBS) as currently recommended by the American Dental
Association. Resin based sealants form a micromechanical–bonded resin layer that acts as a physical
barrier between enamel and surface and the oral environment and thus changes the occlusal
morphology (3) Resin based sealants can be either filled or unfilled. Filler particles improve the
dental sealants wear resistance. Unfilled sealants are beneficial when "high spots" in the occlusion
cannot be adjusted with dental hand pieces. These type of sealants are mostly used in school–based
settings. Most of the clinical studies have demonstrated that glass ionomer has lower retention rates
compared with Resin based sealants

Tooth Decay Is An Imbalance Of Mineral Loss And Replacement
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is an imbalance of mineral loss and replacement within a tooth over time in response to
acid attacks on a daily basis. These acid attacks are a direct result of food and drink consumption
resulting in cavities and decay. The cavity and tooth decay process can be prevented by working
closely with a professional dentist and following a thorough at–home dental health routine. Eating
the correct foods at the right times and avoiding certain snacks can all help to prevent tooth decay.
So let's take a look at tooth decay and the actual process itself.
Tooth decay is the formation of cavities or dental caries as they're also known. The process involves
three major factors including food and/or beverages consumed, the ... Show more content on

This series of attacks and rebuilds is much like a tug of war in your mouth. It's also a way of the
body protecting itself from everyday problems. In order to help prevent tooth decay we must first
understand it fully and a great way to begin is to look at each of the three main factors in closer
detail.
The three main factors in tooth decay
Food and Drink – when food and drink is consumed over an extended period of time between meals,
the balance between remineralisation and demineralisation can tip in favour of tooth decay. Sticky
foods such as caramel and raisins are particularly adept at causing acid attacks that become too
much for saliva to prevent and repair. Eating these foods during a meal however allows for the tug–
of–war scenario to become a winning situation for a person and their teeth. A scenario in which
tooth decay can occur rather rapidly happens to be when children are allowed to fall asleep with a
bottle. This can be the same if a bottle is given to them for them to carry around too. Whether it
contains milk, juice or another drink, bacteria can use them all to produce acids and this is known as
"baby bottle tooth decay". In order to help prevent tooth decay, you must limit the intake of sugary
and sticky foods along with sweetened beverages between your meals.
Bacteria in Plaque – plaque on your teeth should be removed by your toothbrush and floss everyday.
Usually, in the majority of cases a clean tooth

Oral Disease And Its Effects On The Health And Well Being...
Background
Oral health is a key component to overall health and well–being for children. Although it is
preventable, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the U.S., five times more
common than asthma. If left untreated, decay can lead to serious health issues that include
malnourishment, bacterial infections, and even surgery or hospitalization. Fortunately, using fluoride
and dental sealants when combined with good oral hygiene, nutrition, and regular dental care can
keep most mouths healthy. Oral health status and access to dental care for children in Iowa is mostly
very good. However disparities exist for certain populations in the state such as low–income
families, children in rural counties, and racial and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also true of all children, regardless of payment source for care. Older children are much more
likely to have had a dental visit in the previous year as shown.
Insurance Coverage
Although dental insurance is not as prevalent as medical insurance, coverage did improve from 2000
to 2005, and remained steady until 2010, similar to the trend for medical insurance. The increase in
the number of children receiving public insurance (Medicaid and hawk–i) likely also increased
dental care access, since both programs cover a comprehensive list of dental services. In contrast,
many private health insurance policies have limited or no dental insurance benefits. However, the
higher unmet need for dental care indicates that the increase in insurance coverage did not
automatically translate into better access to dental care for lower income children.
School–based sealant program data (children in grades 2–8) finds that 3 children in every 20 have
no payment source for dental care. The percent of children with untreated decay is high (18.6%) and
even higher for children on Medicaid (21.86%).
Having a regular source of care is an important characteristic of a dental home, as it is for a medical
home. Nine out of ten children had one main place that they went to receive their dental care.
CSHCN (97%), African American children (95%) and children with dental insurance (93%) were
most likely to report a regular source of dental care.

The Effects Of Psychological Counseling On Pregnant Women...
The Poster session was very informative, it had various topics that had information on relevant
health issues. One the posters that caught my attention was "To explore the impact of psychological
counseling on pregnant women who are at high risk for carrying a fetus with down syndrome" by
Fatima Riaz. The aim of that study was to research the impact of psychological counseling on
pregnant women who were 35 years old or above which are at a high risk of having a child born
with Down syndrome. The objective was to minimize the anxiety and psychological stress mothers
endure after receiving those abnormal test results. One of the things I personally learned was that its
an issue that is indeed relevant, I was told by the presenter that 95% of pregnant women terminate
their pregnancy once they are informed through screening that their child will be born with Down
Syndrome.
The other poster presentation that caught my attention was "Evaluating parents' perception of the
effects of dental sealants on children from ages 3–12 years" by Zarmina Sajjad. The objective of this
study was to explore parent's knowledge of dental sealants as a preventive care in children. I knew
beforehand that dental caries is a chronic disease that could affect everyone. However, I didn't know
too much about the benefits of sealants in children. First dental sealants are a type of plastic that

Essay On Dental Sealant
The purpose of this research was to prove that the School–Based Dental Sealant program could
improve access to Preventive Dental Service. The authors investigated 8145 students in
Framingham, Massachusetts which was considered representative of the 66190 residents living in
west/ southwest of Boston. The study began after applying oral survey to all first and second–grade
students in Framingham from 2000 to 2009. In this period of time, all students were screened for the
number of teeth filled, number of teeth with untreated decay, number of teeth extracted, existing
sealants on the first molar, and identification of first molars in need of sealant. And then the dental
officials applied sealant to the molars of those students who had high potential of developing carries.
Although students were identified and informed of the dental care they needed, just 29% of students
in 2003 were willing to receive sealants. In 2004, just 26% of the students were willing to receive
sealants resulting in 52% of students having tooth decay. Over the six–year period, the dental
hygienists and nurses of Boston schools applied sealant and gave them 20 to 25 minutes of oral ...

Biofilm Formation and Colonization are of Prime Importance...
An ideal restorative material should have a property of adhesion to tooth structure and an ability to
withstand the occlusal forces. However, some therapeutic and caries preventing efficacy might be
desirable. Glass ionomer cement has been shown to produce some degree of antibacterial effect due
to release of fluoride [3]. Several studies have been done to increase the antimicrobial effect of GIC
without compromising the physical properties of the restoration. Takahashi Y [4] in 2006 and
Tuzuner T [1] in 2011 advocated that the incorporation of chlorhexidine into GICs has resulted in an

biofilm. The results revealed statistically significant difference in bacterial load among the three
groups, i.e. CFUs were lowest in chitosan modified GIC followed by chlorhexidine–cetrimide
modified GIC and maximum CFUs were observed in conventional GIC. The findings of present
study suggested that antimicrobial effect of GIC is enhanced after addition of CH and CHX–CT in
GIC. However, chitosan modified GIC showed a significantly lower bacterial load when compared
with chlorhexidine–cetrimide modified GIC. The observations depicted that degree of bacterial
attachment or plaque accumulation was less on chitosan modified GIC than on chlorhexidine–
cetrimide modified GIC. Tarsi et al. [13] suggested that the mechanism of anti–adherence activity of
chitosan involved bacterial surface modifications, alterations in expression of bacterial surface
ligands, and chitosan adsorption to host surfaces to change in hydroxyapatite ionic

‎Although the prevalence of dental caries has decreased worldwide, the incidence ‎

Persuasive Essay On Xylitol
Shocking Cavity Fighters You Didn't Know About
You think you are doing everything right when it comes to your teeth. You brush regularly and limit
sugary foods. Unfortunately, a trip to the dentist reveals cavities. While brushing, flossing and
steering clear of cavity causing foods and beverages are the best line of defense, there are some
interesting second lines of defense you may not know about for children and adults both.
Xylitol
Fight cavities with sugar! That's right, Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used as a
sweetener. It is used in sugar–free gums, candies, mouthwashes and toothpastes. While Xylitol
works great as a sugar substitute, it also works as a cavity fighter. This type of sugar kills the
bacteria in the mouth that causes cavities. Using Xylitol five times of day in the form of gum, candy,
mints, or mouthwashes helps to cleanse your mouth of cavity causing bacteria. Your children will be
thrilled when you ask them to eat candy!
Cheese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not just great for your body and bones, but the casein in cheese may have a protective property
which helps prevent cavities. After we eat cheese, research shows an increase in calcium levels in
our mouths. Increased calcium in the saliva can help re–mineralize teeth and prevent cavities.
Wine
Obviously for adults only, wine has chemical components in it which research has shown fights the
bacteria leading to tooth decay and cavities. While these studies are still young, the research is
promising. However, keep in mind red wine is known to stain teeth.
Using a Straw
When you are trying to prevent cavities, you should avoid sugary and acidic drinks altogether. But if
you find you need a soda, drink it through a straw. Studies show sipping sugary drinks through a
straw lessens contact with the teeth and therefore lessens the effect the sugary drink has on teeth.

Dental Sealants Essay
Dental Sealants & Caries Risk
Dental sealants are used to fill pits and fissures on the occlusal, or chewing, surfaces of the
premolars and molars to help protect them from carious lesions and tooth decay ("Dental Sealants",
2016). Posterior teeth that are selected for placement of sealants are either newly erupted, when
occlusal surface is deep and irregular, and have a history of dental caries (Wilkins, 621). So it is very
important, especially for children, to get sealants placed as soon as their molars erupt in order to
lower their risk for childhood caries. However, there are many factors that have caused children to
be withheld from radiographic screenings and treatment; one major factor is parents not being able
to afford the treatment. But, one thing that has helped many children get sealants placed is a school
sealant programs; funded by the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC has supported for the
placement of sealants along with other oral health care activities in many states, including South
Carolina. In South Carolina, school sealants programs have been helping save high caries risk teeth

There are many factors that can cause caries such as xerostomia, diet high in sugars, low
socioeconomic status, and inadequate daily oral hygiene, affecting both children and adults
(Wilkins, 621). I also learned that there are sealant programs where dental hygienists volunteer their
time to host these programs by providing services such as placement of sealants, radiographic
screenings, prophylaxis, application of topical fluorides, and oral health care and treatment free of
charge for children who come from low–income households (Collins, 2016). Another thing I learned
was that the, "incidence of new pit and fissure caries can be lowered by 86% if the sealant is
retained at 1 year, 78.6% at 2 years, and 58.6% at 4 years" (Wilkins,

Dental Caries: Adult
Dental Caries, Adult
Dental caries are spots of decay (cavities) in the outer layer of your tooth (enamel). The natural
bacteria in your mouth produce acid when breaking down sugary foods. When you eat a lot of
sugary foods, a lot of acid is produced. The acid destroys the protective enamel of your tooth,
leading to tooth decay.
It is important to treat your tooth decay as soon as possible. Untreated dental caries can spread decay
and lead to painful infection. Brushing regularly with fluoride toothpaste (oral hygiene) and getting
regular dental checkups can help prevent dental caries.
CAUSES
Dental caries are caused by the acid produced when bacteria break down sugary foods.

Sealants For Baby Teeth: Does Your Child Need Them? One misconception that you may have
about baby teeth is that they do not need to be cared for like adult teeth do. They'll eventually come
out, which can cause you to have the mindset that properal oral health is not necessary. However,
baby teeth are just as prone to getting cavities, which can lead to pain that needs to be addressed by
a dentist. That is why you may want to consider sealants for your child's baby teeth. Here are some
key things you need to know about them. What Are Dental Sealant? A dental sealant is an additional

The Public Health Dental Hygienist
In the first case study, the public health dental hygienist is responsible for evaluating the daily
fluoridation test that is submitted by each state to make sure it is in the optimal range 0.7 to 1.2
milligrams per liter. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011) She is also
responsible for working with the state if the test results do not measure up the standards set forth by
the CDC. In addition the dental hygienist reports all of these results to Centers for Disease control
and Prevention (CDC) so the CDC can determine a national average. This case study shows the
"assessment" part of the essential public health services. In United States Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 (2011), the report talks about how many
improvements have occurred in oral health but there is still a lot more improvement needed. The
report further explains how water fluoridation has been one of the most efficient ways to reduce
decay across the nation. Mostly everyone has access to water and if the water is fluoridated, then
those with little or no access to dental care are getting preventative dental care in the form of a
fluoride regimen in their daily water intake. (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011) Given this, it would
only make sense that the government would employ a dental professional to assess the water
fluoridation in every state. As assessment is usually conducted at two phases in any project. (Burt,
2005) First it is conducted to

Having Sealant Applied To Your Child's Teeth Essay
What You Should Know About Having Sealant Applied To Your Child's Teeth
It's important to teach your child good dental hygiene habits starting when the baby teeth first erupt.
Establishing a pattern of regular dental visits and daily brushing will help protect your child's teeth
for life. However, it may be difficult for your child to always brush effectively. That's where dental
sealants come in. They help reduce the risk of developing cavities. The procedure is easy to endure,
and it's certainly much less stressful and less expensive than getting a filling. Here's what you should
know about this dental procedure.
Dental Sealants Fill Pits
The pits and grooves of your child's teeth are breeding grounds for bacteria because food gets stuck
in them easily. If your child is not able to brush vigorously, the food may not get removed. Even if
your child brushes very well, the bristles on the toothbrush may be to large to get down into the very
small pits. A dental sealant is a type of liquid plastic the dentist applies to a tooth. It flows into all
the grooves and pits, and then hardens. This makes the surface of the tooth smoother and less likely
to trap food that feeds bacteria ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, it is common to wait for the first set of molars to fully erupt before considering dental
sealants. The decision is on a tooth by tooth basis. Your child's dentist examines each tooth after it
emerges through the gum. It's possible the dentist will recommend sealing a baby tooth or a front
tooth. It all depends on the shape and condition of your child's teeth.
Another reason your dentist may wait to apply sealant until the molars come in is because by then
your child is old enough to cooperate with the procedure. While it isn't painful, some cooperation is
necessary since the tooth has to stay dry or the sealant won't adhere

Baby Teeth Research Paper
Most children will have all 20 of their baby teeth by the age of three, but they should already be
seeing a dentist regularly once their very first tooth comes in. According to La Crosse Pediatric
Dentistry, this is to start imbedding good dental care habits from an early age, and to check for
cavities and other problems. The Wisconsin dentist also recommends parents think about adding
sealants to their child's baby teeth to protect them from tooth decay.
Although baby teeth will eventually fall out, taking care of them is important for your child's overall
oral health. From the ages of six to 14, children are far more likely to get cavities than at any other
point in their lives. Sealants, which are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the
teeth, keep out food particles and bad bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. ... Show

  • 3. Dental Curing Light RESEARCH PAPER Innovation and quality are two goals that every dental practice always would like to reach and keep to enhance their image in the dental field. Therefore, beyond the professional techniques of the dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants, continuing to look for better dental equipment is the key to drive a dental practice to its steady success. I believe, along with the growth of a general office, a curing light is an indispensable equipment. Nowadays, there are a variety of dental curing lights on the market. • 5. Research Paper On Dental Sealants If you are considering dental sealants for your child's teeth, you are probably also wondering about child safety. Many parents are concerned about Bisphenol A (BPA) compounds, but pediatric dentists recommend using the air–tight plastic shield to seal out plaque. The results include dramatically less decay to biting surfaces, but will it negatively affect kids' health? While the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other government agencies, describe dental sealants as "a safe plastic coating," many still worry about the effects of these compounds. However, BPA has been in commercial use since 1957. Research has shown BPA causes health issues with laboratory animals, and BPA levels in humans tend to be higher than ... A "boil and bite" mouth guard can offer protection, however they will often have to be reheated and refitted. They will not provide the safety of a tailored made mouth guard. Dental mouth guards are molded to the exact fit of your child's teeth. There is always greater stability and protection from a form fitted protector. In addition to preventing caries on 'sound' surfaces, dental sealants have also proven to help arrest the spread of caries lesions after initiation. Sealants reduced the percentage of non–cavitated caries lesions that progressed by 71%. Dental sealants have also proven to reduce bacterial levels; in a recent study it was noted that sealants lowered bacteria levels by at least 100–fold (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, 2013). Cavities Research Paper If you have had frequent cavities for most of your life, then your biggest fear may be that bad oral health is in your genes and your child will live a life filled with cavities, too. While no studies have found that children can truly inherit cavities, there are ways that cavity–prone parents can pass on their bad oral health to their children. However, the great news is that by taking the right steps now, you can prevent this from happening. Here are two important tips for keeping cavities to yourself and not letting your oral health affect your child's. Know How Cavity Bacteria is Passed So You Can Stop the Cycle If your mother had frequent cavities as well as you, then it can be easy to suspect you just have genetically bad teeth. Parents can pass on their cavity–causing oral bacteria to their children, but it is not their DNA that causes it. Most babies are born with a healthy oral microbiome that helps keep cavities at bay. • 32. Occlusal Caries Development The epidemiological studies in caries do not show a consistent distribution for all tooth surfaces. The occlusal surface caries still show high prevalence compared to interproximal caries. The incidence of caries in the occlusal surfaces of the teeth constitutes more than two–thirds of all caries types. The propensity of occlusal caries to develop is closely related with the depth and morphology of the pits and fissures. Caries development is caused by the fact that bacteria and food accumulate in the pit and fissures and these areas cannot be cleaned properly due to the lack of both cleansing effect of saliva and mechanical cleaning (3). National data indicate that 80 percent of dental caries in the permanent teeth found in children is concentrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case, the patient should be referred to the dentist for restorative treatment. Also, it is contraindicated if the pits and fissures on the tooth surface are well coalesced and self–cleansing; sealants are contraindicated because such occlusal contour are at low risk of developing caries (5) Dental sealants can be accomplished through the use of either glass ionomer sealant (GIS) or through the use of resin based sealants (RBS) as currently recommended by the American Dental Association. Resin based sealants form a micromechanical–bonded resin layer that acts as a physical barrier between enamel and surface and the oral environment and thus changes the occlusal morphology (3) Resin based sealants can be either filled or unfilled. Filler particles improve the dental sealants wear resistance. Unfilled sealants are beneficial when "high spots" in the occlusion cannot be adjusted with dental hand pieces. • 34. Tooth Decay Is An Imbalance Of Mineral Loss And Replacement Tooth Decay Tooth decay is an imbalance of mineral loss and replacement within a tooth over time in response to acid attacks on a daily basis. These acid attacks are a direct result of food and drink consumption resulting in cavities and decay. The cavity and tooth decay process can be prevented by working closely with a professional dentist and following a thorough at–home dental health routine. Eating the correct foods at the right times and avoiding certain snacks can all help to prevent tooth decay. So let's take a look at tooth decay and the actual process itself. Tooth decay is the formation of cavities or dental caries as they're also known. The process involves three major factors including food and/or beverages consumed, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This series of attacks and rebuilds is much like a tug of war in your mouth. It's also a way of the body protecting itself from everyday problems. In order to help prevent tooth decay we must first understand it fully and a great way to begin is to look at each of the three main factors in closer detail. The three main factors in tooth decay Food and Drink – when food and drink is consumed over an extended period of time between meals, the balance between remineralisation and demineralisation can tip in favour of tooth decay. Sticky foods such as caramel and raisins are particularly adept at causing acid attacks that become too much for saliva to prevent and repair. Eating these foods during a meal however allows for the tug– of–war scenario to become a winning situation for a person and their teeth. A scenario in which tooth decay can occur rather rapidly happens to be when children are allowed to fall asleep with a bottle. This can be the same if a bottle is given to them for them to carry around too. Whether it contains milk, juice or another drink, bacteria can use them all to produce acids and this is known as "baby bottle tooth decay". In order to help prevent tooth decay, you must limit the intake of sugary and sticky foods along with sweetened beverages between your meals. Bacteria in Plaque – plaque on your teeth should be removed by your toothbrush and floss everyday. Usually, in the majority of cases a clean tooth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Insurance Coverage Although dental insurance is not as prevalent as medical insurance, coverage did improve from 2000 to 2005, and remained steady until 2010, similar to the trend for medical insurance. The increase in the number of children receiving public insurance (Medicaid and hawk–i) likely also increased dental care access, since both programs cover a comprehensive list of dental services. In contrast, many private health insurance policies have limited or no dental insurance benefits. However, the higher unmet need for dental care indicates that the increase in insurance coverage did not automatically translate into better access to dental care for lower income children. School–based sealant program data (children in grades 2–8) finds that 3 children in every 20 have no payment source for dental care. The percent of children with untreated decay is high (18.6%) and even higher for children on Medicaid (21.86%). Having a regular source of care is an important characteristic of a dental home, as it is for a medical home. Nine out of ten children had one main place that they went to receive their dental care. CSHCN (97%), African American children (95%) and children with dental insurance (93%) were most likely to report a regular source of dental care. Availability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Effects Of Psychological Counseling On Pregnant Women... The Poster session was very informative, it had various topics that had information on relevant health issues. One the posters that caught my attention was "To explore the impact of psychological counseling on pregnant women who are at high risk for carrying a fetus with down syndrome" by Fatima Riaz. The aim of that study was to research the impact of psychological counseling on pregnant women who were 35 years old or above which are at a high risk of having a child born with Down syndrome. The objective was to minimize the anxiety and psychological stress mothers endure after receiving those abnormal test results. One of the things I personally learned was that its an issue that is indeed relevant, I was told by the presenter that 95% of pregnant women terminate their pregnancy once they are informed through screening that their child will be born with Down Syndrome. The other poster presentation that caught my attention was "Evaluating parents' perception of the effects of dental sealants on children from ages 3–12 years" by Zarmina Sajjad. The objective of this study was to explore parent's knowledge of dental sealants as a preventive care in children. I knew beforehand that dental caries is a chronic disease that could affect everyone. However, I didn't know too much about the benefits of sealants in children. The authors investigated 8145 students in Framingham, Massachusetts which was considered representative of the 66190 residents living in west/ southwest of Boston. The study began after applying oral survey to all first and second–grade students in Framingham from 2000 to 2009. In this period of time, all students were screened for the number of teeth filled, number of teeth with untreated decay, number of teeth extracted, existing sealants on the first molar, and identification of first molars in need of sealant. And then the dental officials applied sealant to the molars of those students who had high potential of developing carries. Although students were identified and informed of the dental care they needed, just 29% of students in 2003 were willing to receive sealants. In 2004, just 26% of the students were willing to receive sealants resulting in 52% of students having tooth decay. An ideal restorative material should have a property of adhesion to tooth structure and an ability to withstand the occlusal forces. However, some therapeutic and caries preventing efficacy might be desirable. Glass ionomer cement has been shown to produce some degree of antibacterial effect due to release of fluoride [3]. Several studies have been done to increase the antimicrobial effect of GIC without compromising the physical properties of the restoration. Takahashi Y [4] in 2006 and Tuzuner T [1] in 2011 advocated that the incorporation of chlorhexidine into GICs has resulted in an excellent antibacterial effect in vitro. Biofilm formation and colonization are of prime importance in initiation and progression of dental caries. Igarashi K et al. [12] concluded in their study that an undisturbed plaque up to 2 days is more acidic as compared to immature plaque. Therefore, in the present study antimicrobial efficacy of modified glass ionomer cement was evaluated by estimating the bacterial load on 2 days old dental biofilm. The results revealed statistically significant difference in bacterial load among the three groups, i.e. CFUs were lowest in chitosan modified GIC followed by chlorhexidine–cetrimide modified GIC and maximum CFUs were observed in conventional GIC. The findings of present study suggested that antimicrobial effect of GIC is enhanced after addition of CH and CHX–CT in GIC. However, chitosan modified GIC showed a significantly lower bacterial load when compared with chlorhexidine–cetrimide modified GIC. The observations depicted that degree of bacterial attachment or plaque accumulation was less on chitosan modified GIC than on chlorhexidine– cetrimide modified GIC. Tarsi et al. [13] suggested that the mechanism of anti–adherence activity of chitosan involved bacterial surface modifications, alterations in expression of bacterial surface ligands, and chitosan adsorption to host surfaces to change in hydroxyapatite ionic ... Unfortunately, a trip to the dentist reveals cavities. While brushing, flossing and steering clear of cavity causing foods and beverages are the best line of defense, there are some interesting second lines of defense you may not know about for children and adults both. Xylitol Fight cavities with sugar! That's right, Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used as a sweetener. It is used in sugar–free gums, candies, mouthwashes and toothpastes. While Xylitol works great as a sugar substitute, it also works as a cavity fighter. This type of sugar kills the bacteria in the mouth that causes cavities. Using Xylitol five times of day in the form of gum, candy, mints, or mouthwashes helps to cleanse your mouth of cavity causing bacteria. Your children will be thrilled when you ask them to eat candy! Dental Sealants Essay Dental Sealants & Caries Risk Dental sealants are used to fill pits and fissures on the occlusal, or chewing, surfaces of the premolars and molars to help protect them from carious lesions and tooth decay ("Dental Sealants", 2016). Posterior teeth that are selected for placement of sealants are either newly erupted, when occlusal surface is deep and irregular, and have a history of dental caries (Wilkins, 621). So it is very important, especially for children, to get sealants placed as soon as their molars erupt in order to lower their risk for childhood caries. However, there are many factors that have caused children to be withheld from radiographic screenings and treatment; one major factor is parents not being able to afford the treatment. But, one thing that has helped many children get sealants placed is a school sealant programs; funded by the Centers for Disease Control. The Public Health Dental Hygienist In the first case study, the public health dental hygienist is responsible for evaluating the daily fluoridation test that is submitted by each state to make sure it is in the optimal range 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter. In addition the dental hygienist reports all of these results to Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) so the CDC can determine a national average. This case study shows the "assessment" part of the essential public health services. In United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 (2011), the report talks about how many improvements have occurred in oral health but there is still a lot more improvement needed. The report further explains how water fluoridation has been one of the most efficient ways to reduce decay across the nation. Mostly everyone has access to water and if the water is fluoridated, then those with little or no access to dental care are getting preventative dental care in the form of a fluoride regimen in their daily water intake. (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011) Given this, it would only make sense that the government would employ a dental professional to assess the water fluoridation in every state. • 65. Having Sealant Applied To Your Child's Teeth Essay What You Should Know About Having Sealant Applied To Your Child's Teeth It's important to teach your child good dental hygiene habits starting when the baby teeth first erupt. Establishing a pattern of regular dental visits and daily brushing will help protect your child's teeth for life. However, it may be difficult for your child to always brush effectively. That's where dental sealants come in. They help reduce the risk of developing cavities. The procedure is easy to endure, and it's certainly much less stressful and less expensive than getting a filling. Here's what you should know about this dental procedure. Dental Sealants Fill Pits The pits and grooves of your child's teeth are breeding grounds for bacteria because food gets stuck in them easily. If your child is not able to brush vigorously, the food may not get removed. Even if your child brushes very well, the bristles on the toothbrush may be to large to get down into the very small pits. A dental sealant is a type of liquid plastic the dentist applies to a tooth. It flows into all the grooves and pits, and then hardens. This makes the surface of the tooth smoother and less likely to trap food that feeds bacteria ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It all depends on the shape and condition of your child's teeth.
