2. Research
• I feel the strengths of my research was definitely when it came to my existing products as I feel these where
what helped me the most when it actually came to production as it gave me an idea of how to structure a
documentary to fit what it is your making the documentary about and by looking at the different
documentary's whilst also looking at some interviews to see how they not only interviewed the person but
how the cameras where set up and also how they made it more visually appealing has just really gone onto
improve the overall outcome of my own documentary. Also as I looked at three very different documentary's
by three different companies and also about three different subjects, it really gave me a broader view on how
to fit my documentary with my subject, whether that be music choice or how I pace it as I found in emotional
documentary’s it seemed to be paced very slow with some slow-motion clips to add effect and also used very
soft and emotional music as it made everything have more impact and also helped piece it all together and
push the message across, whereas when I looked at the cherry bomb documentary it was a lot more fast
paced and had loud music with fast cuts and a lot of exciting scenes which was for me something I wanted to
take into my documentary as although I wanted my documentary to be educational I also wanted it to be a
showcase of breakdancing.
• I also think another strength of my research was the interview task as I feel it helped me understand what to
do but also what not to do when it comes to an interview and it also taught me things like giving the person
the questions before hand so they can think about there answers and even write prompts so that when it
comes time to do the interview they can give a good quality answer and not just be put on the spot and
maybe give an answer that doesn’t really say what needs to be said.
• I think the weaknesses of my research where when it came to audience and subject research, although I don’t
think it really made that much of an affect on the final piece I do feel I could of added a bit more to it to give
the project more context overall. I think this mostly applied when iot came to audience as I knew I didn’t have
to as much subject research as I already knew a hell of slot about breakdancing but what I feel could of
maybe impacted my work was with the audience research as it may of changed certain things in the project
to suit a wider audience than maybe just tailored more towards dancers.
3. Planning
• The main strengths in my planning where definitely just making sure I knew exactly when I
was going to be doing each different thing as I knew when I would be in the studio to film the
interview I know exactly when I would be able to access the dance studio, this all meant I was
able to fully plan everything I wanted to get done and also go over it with the people involved
so when it came to actually doing it I was fully prepared and was bale to get the best result I
possibly could. Another strength I feel was the questions as it might not seem a lot but do to
my research it meant I was able to go over the questions with the interviewee it meant that
we could go over all the answers and create prompts so that the answers would have more
quality and also say what I feel needs to be said to make the interview have impact and also
stay interesting, I didn’t want to go to far though and make it feel like a script as I still want
the answers to be authentic.
• So overall I do think that the planning had a good impact on my product and definitely helped
make sure everything was set out so I was able to get the best out of time and resources I
had available to me.
• I feel the weaknesses of my project where when it came to visual planning as I don’t think I
went over it enough and I don’t think I talked about it enough, although this didn’t have an
impact on my product I do feel it would have been better to go over it more so that it was
properly planned before hand in case anything had happened in production, luckily nothing
did and as I already had a clear idea of how I wanted it to look and I feel it turned out great, I
do feel if it was planned better it could of maybe sped up the process and would of made
sure if anything had gone wrong during production something would have been in place to
fix it. To improve I would of made a storyboard so I had a more definite idea of the structure
and also how it would be laid out whilst also going over what sort of black ands white I would
use so that when it came to production I already had that sorted instead of having to figure it
out at the time.
4. Time Management
• I do think time management is definitely somewhere that I can improve on as I did find
myself having to go back and do parts of work later down the line whereas if id finished
it on time i wouldn't of had to do that and also wouldn’t of had to take the time out of
what I was meant to be doing at the time. I don’t think it was all bad though as I feel
when it came to production I do believe I manged my time well and made sure that I
had everything filmed when it needed to eb and also made sure I and more than
enough time to get the editing done and to a high standard. I wanted to make sure I
had the time for the editing as I knew That that would be the most crucial part as I
really and to make the project more visually appealing then due to some of the issues I
faced when it came to the filming.
• I did get the work done on time with the addition of a little bit extra to finish off loose
ends, all the production was done exactly on time and handed in and overall I felt was
good although due to some complications I did need a bit extra to finish of some of
other work.
• If id of had more time to do do the work I would definitely fo found a way of getting the
original person to dance in the video as I do feel it would of really added some diversity
and dynamic to the documentary as I doo feel it seems a bit still at times which is
something I would of liked to improve on. So I do feel with more time I could of
improved my work but with the time I had I was very happy with how the project
turned out,
5. Technical Qualities
• When looking at other existing products I found that there wasn’t anything
that similar to what I was making so I had to try and take elements from each
different product I looked at and then use it an inspiration for my own work.
One of the main inspirations especially when it came to the technical side was
definitely the cherry bomb documentary, as it used fast cuts along with title
screens and animations which was something I also tried to include in my own
work.
• When it came to how I did the interview my main inspiration was an interview
with Tyler the creator-(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrcwcMIYpQg)
and also the other existing product that really had an impact on the interview
was a biker gang documentary
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMpZLrODd3k&t=190s) the reason
these ones tood out to me was that with the Tyler interview the way the
camera is cut in two and also how the way it’s the same angle but the effects
make it look more dynamic was the one thing that really helped elevate my
production whilst with the biker gang documentary really helped me as it
showed me how to convey an interview without hearing ir seeing the
interviewer which I felt really helped make the production more professional
but also made it run a lot smoother and helped get straight to the point.
6. Aesthetic Qualities
• I do feel my work looks very good, I really like how the black and white turned
out as I wasn’t sure if it would fit the style of the project but in the end I really
feel it helped add character to the project and add almost a contrast to what
was being displayed as breakdancing isn’t very black and white its very
complicated but the simplicity of the black and white just goes against that
and adds something very different.
• I feel it was creative and also had to be creative as the issues that occurred
with filming meant not only did I have to be creative with everything I was
already doing I also had to make up for the lack of movement in the shots, to
do this I would change parts of each shot In premiere by zooming, scaling and
moving the image to create the effect that it was different angles, I also used
transitions and cuts to add something extra to make it better to watch.
• I love how the black and white turned out I really felt it added that
professional look to the project and nicely contrasted the subject of the
documentary. I also really like the first transition where it goes from one move
to the next on the beat of the music as it looked really clean and was
something I took time on, I also really liked the way it switches back and forth
between clips of dancing ansd also the interview footage with the audio of the
footage sometimes leaking into the dance clips as I feel it keeps the viewer
engaged and makes it flow better.
7. Audience Appeal
• I definitely feel I've appealed to my target audience as I think everything
from the music to the way it was edited, I feel this was due to me being
apart of my won audience so I know the sort of things that people want to
see whilst also maybe doing things differently to add something new,
although I didn’t do a questionnaire I got a constant stream of feedback
from friends peers and teachers so that I had a constant stream of ideas
and improvements I could make from the sort of people that are in my
audience and even some that aren't so that I can then extend my audience
past what I originally intended.
• Due to the fast edits and the music used and also the fact that its about
breakdancing can narrow the audience down but I feel by including
elements of video that would normally be seen in music videos really
helped expand my audience as a lot of people maybe don’t watch
documentaries so by adding these different elements that aren't normally
seen in documentaries I think really helped to appeal to a bigger audience
whilst still having all the core parts that appeal to my target audience.
9. Feedback 1- antony
• What did you like about the product?
– I really liked the way it was edited as I feel the way the first move
transitioned into the next along with the music changed really fit the style
I feel you were going for. I also like the black and white as I haven't really
seen that in a recent documentary and I haven't seen it be done with the
style and subject of your documentary so the contrast between the wto
really added something different.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think more camera movement could of made it feel less atatic and still and I
also feel that there could have been maybe more angles in the interview as I
know it was done in post but I feel if the angles where actually done at the
time it could of added something a bit more and also helped the quality stay
to a higher standard.
10. Feedback 2- jordan
• What did you like about the product?
– I really liked how the music stayed even when the ineterview was happening as it
just helped everything come together and make sure that there where no points of
silence so I was always fully engaged. I also really liked the editing as I felt you
really made the best out of the footage and although the angles where the same it
still felt like there was movement in the shots due to the editing.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I think the audio of the interview could have been better as I
feel there was a lot of noise which could sometimes be
distracting, so maybe next time something could be done to
prevent that as I feel this was the only bad thing that I saw
throughout the whole video.
11. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– I think the feedback was very fair and honest and I actually
agreed with everything that was said good and bad I feel
Jordan was spot on about the noise in the audio as I feel
for me that was the main thing that didn’t go well but I
couldn’t find a solution at the time but hopefully in future I
can
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– There was nothing that I really disagreed with as all the
things they said could be improved I also feel could have
been improved.
