Inspired by Aaron Poffenberger's talk at San Antonio BSides 2016, the idea of software developers as members of the blue team stuck with me, and I wanted to share that same idea with the developers in training at Codeup. This talk features a short description as to what cyber security is, who is involved with it, and how software developers can be a part of the security process, especially when they are building software for their clients.

Does Behaviour Driven Development have a role in the infrastructure world? Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure where systems administrators can apply some simple open source tools and BDD principles to make infrastructure management more powerful, more insightful and deliver more value to their customers. The typical enterprise monitoring and configuration management set-up for a website is: - Is the Apache package installed and the appropriate version? - Is the Apache service running? - Can I connect to the HTTP port and is HTML returned? - Multiply this by a few hundred iterations of hosts and types of services and you’re probably looking at your typical Nagios, Puppet, Cfengine, Hyperic set-up. All this monitoring misses something critical though – we’re not actually monitoring that the service does what it should. Yes, it matters whether Apache is installed, the Apache service is running, and you can connect to HTTP but does this actually prove anything about the availability of the service we’re managing and providing for our customers? Nope… We need to demonstrate more than just a check that says the Apache server is up. We need to demonstrate that the service delivered by that infrastructure was available to our customers AND functioning as intended. Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure or BDI which applies the principles of Behavioural Driven Development to the management of infrastructure. In this presentation you’ll learn: - How Behaviour Driven Development works - What makes a behavioural test - How to install and use Cucumber to perform BDI - Practical examples of behavioural tests in Cucumber, and - How to integrate BDI into your work flow and your enterprise monitoring and configuration management frameworks.

Configuration management is the oft-misunderstood (and possibly black) art of managing your IT environment, infrastructure, and costs. Done well it can reduce operational errors and outages, simplify your environment, and help maintain the sanity of your IT staff. Puppet is part of the bright future of configuration management for heterogeneous Unix systems. It combines automation, a powerful abstraction language, and uses a client-server model that can scale to suit enterprise-size environments. Puppet is written in Ruby and authored by recovering system administrator-turned-developer Luke Kanies. This session explains why configuration management is important, the benefits configuration management will deliver, and how all of this can be achieved using Puppet. The session also explains emerging best practices in configuration management and addresses: * What is configuration management? Or why am I here? * Benefits, risks, and challenges: build fire resistant infrastructure rather than fight fires * Best practice: how do we do this configuration management magic right? * Where does Puppet fit in and why should management pay for its implementation? * Why using Puppet will save you money and help staff retention (although is unlikely to stop world hunger) * Real world configuration management using Puppet: code, examples, explanations, and using Puppet in anger * Measuring the results and pocketing the returns * Where to from here: some ideas about the future (may include wild-arse guesses)

With so many technologies branded as “cloud” products, it can be difficult to distinguish good technology from good marketing. The resulting confusion complicates the work of software development teams who are trying not only to architect software effectively but also trying to accelerate building, testing, and delivering software. To cut through this confusion, Bill Wilder defines key cloud terms, compares the different types of clouds, and drills into concrete examples of specific cloud services. Introducing several software architecture concepts and patterns, Bill illustrates how to position applications to run reliably, at high scale (if needed), and with maximum cost efficiency on modern cloud platforms. Specific examples are drawn from the Windows Azure and Amazon cloud platforms, though the concepts are generally applicable. Leave with an understanding of relevant cloud concepts, a better idea of how moving to the “cloud” can impact application architecture, and some practical ideas for exploiting the cloud to improve software development team productivity.
