Resident Assistants
Being involved groups is essential to everyday living and many of us will belong to a variety of
groups at the same time. For example, families, social, sports, support, learning management and
committees groups. A group is "a small, face–to–face collection of persons who interact to
accomplish some purpose" (Schriver, 1998). In other words, a group is collection of diverse people
with common characteristics or purpose. A group can consist of any number of people from any
number of races, ethnicities, culture, age, and or religious background. People involved in groups
interact, engage, support, and identify with each other and are aware of each other in the group,
often meet regularly at pre–determined destinations and times. The people involved ... Show more

Community Development In Social Work
Introduction Community development (CD) has been playing an important role within the society as
it is a critical practice that identifies and attempts to address unequal relations of power (Forde &
Lynch, 2015). In CD, social capital is an important term as it refers to the networks and norms that
enable collective action. In general, social capital is the level of trust between members within the
community. Social workers need to understand and empower the social capital to strengthen the
community through collective action based on the existing resources. The CD involves in a
continuing process in which maximises the opportunities for people to work collaboratively to
identify and fulfil their needs based on the existing assets within the community (Kenny, 2011). As
the society is not static due to the uncertainty and continual change, CD has to be flexible and fit
within the context and the needs of the targeted community. According to AASW (2010), social
workers are committed to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve the equitable
access to social, economic, environmental and political resources. As a social work undergraduate,
we acknowledge the significant impact of CD through the positive change in the society. Our group
through the course of this semester has learnt about the process of community work and community
development. They are inter–related and beneficial to the community in which address and meet the

Relationship Between Community And Community Development

Peace Building through Community Involvement
For it isn't enough to talk of peace, one must believe in it.
And it isn't enough to believe in peace, one must work at it.
–Eleanor Roosevelt Over the course of history, society, economy, and political affiliations have all
exhibited devastating impacts sought on by violence in conflict. As seen in the media, violence in all
forms, whether it be direct violence or structural violence, have had reoccurring themes of halted or
negative development and have been linked to psychological trauma in those who have personally
witnessed or been a victim of violent acts. Although conflict is inevitable in a world with a variety
of different cultural beliefs, political systems and resource availability, there are a variety of ways in
which conflicts can be resolved without resorting to the use of violence. Within many fragile
contexts, or "state structures that lack political will or capacity to provide the basic functions needed
for poverty reduction, development and to safeguard the security and human rights of their
population," (OECD DAC, 2007), communities have maintained impressive resiliency qualities.
Through the development of community–based peace building organizations, communities that exist
within fragile contexts would have the tools to maintain resiliency and sustainability during violent
conflicts. The term peace building was originally coined by Johan Galtung in the 1970's and has
since been redefined by several international institutions and NGOs (United

"Architecture needs to understand what people's needs are and incorporate those needs into the

In a developing country like Pakistan, the growth of urban poor is increasing rapidly. Consequently,
the need for shelter is increasing to accommodate the growing urban poor. The housing provided by
the public sector is based on modern conventional zoning practices which do not respond to the
housing needs of the lower income group in the third world countries. In the absence of appropriate
low income housing, the lower income group are left with no other choice but to live in squatter

Along with it, the idea of mixed use zoning, ensures the constant presence of people at different

human interaction. The idea of a shorter block and network of narrow streets put forward in the
book promotes the idea of human interaction since it provides different possibilities of reaching the
same location; encouraging informal encounters and interactions. This book helps to understand
how certain physical environment and sociological setup helps in building a sense of community of

How can our acts of making become more effective by working with rather than against human

Taking the research further, the book "The New Urbanism: Toward an Architecture of Community"

idea that certain physical setup can enhance a social behaviour. The New Urbanism theory came

conventional planning practices .The reason being that such prevailing patterns have lost the charm

The Positive Impacts Of Community Development In South Africa
Community development around the world is being practised by various entities, addressing various
socio–economic issues that are unique to different communities worldwide. According to
Bhattacharyya (2004), community development initiatives are dominant in democratic countries.
There are various initiatives that have led to significant shifts in the wellbeing of communities using
different development tools to develop communities around the world. South African, which is a
democratic country has one of the highest income gabs in the world. The country's income
difference is evident in many townships/rural areas around the country's underdeveloped
communities. The positive impact of community development may be seen in the fields of public
health, micro–macro development, food and violence (Bhattacharyya, 2004).
Community development is multi–faceted. Bhattacharyya (2004) argues that community
development is not a distinct field and that not everything that is being done by developers to
improve communities should not be regarded as community development. Bhattacharyya (2004)
states that it should only be regarded as community development if the improvement pursues
solidarity and agency which can be achieved through adhering to the principles of self–help, felt
needs and participation.
In previous community development research, Bhattacharyya (2004) finds that locality has been
used as a proxy for community development. He argues that it is becoming analytically irrelevant

Adult Education : A Social Movement
Adult education can be associated with or defined as a social movement because interactions within
the movement collectively represent "organized activities that encourages social change" (Lange,
Spencer, 2014, p. 13). Walter (2007) notes that adult education programming "brings individuals
together in a common cause...strengthening social networks, common identity, and commitment to
action in the process" (p. 250). Old (i.e. traditional) social movements such as organized labour or
trade unions were long considered to be change agents, as they "engaged in a variety of educational
activities" and were the "single most important provider of non–vocational social purpose adult
education for working people" (Spencer, 1995, p. 32); however, the emergence of new social
movements (NSM) in the post–industrial economy has focused attention on how such activities act
as learning sites for adult education. This research examines how the Women's Informal Network
(WIN) organized in Citrix Systems, a U.S. based multinational software company, can be viewed as
an NSM for adult education within the latter organization. This study looks at the development of
WIN, the issues that are most important to WIN, and the values that motivate WIN to act. The study
also investigates both what and how adults in the WIN organization are learning as they participate
in the group's activities. The WIN Organization A group of professional women in Citrix's Santa

Alternative Perspective Of Community Building
Community building is "creating communities that work for the low–income families who live
there" (Schriever, 2015, p. 274). Coming up with a way for the community to work as a whole, to
ensure that the low–income families are getting the basic needs met. According to Walsh another
way of looking at community building is by taking a more comprehensive approach to poverty.
Walsh believes that by taking a more comprehensive approach of poverty you will see the
interwoven problems, such as poor, bad health, and racism (as cited in Schriever, 2015). To create a
well–rounded community, the low–income families living in poverty need to have their voices
heard. The only way that others can fully understand their experiences and struggles of living in
poverty is to hear about it. This is how the alternative perspective of community building can be
implemented into a community. Poverty is an issue that Duluth faces, just like most cities. Roughly
17.8% of Duluth's residents live in poverty ("Duluth, Minnesota," 2017). Therefore, using the
alternative perspective of community building is very important to see if the city of Duluth is taking
steps to improve or reduce poverty. Community Action Duluth is an organization that works towards
"empowering and engaging the Duluth community to eliminate poverty, and create prosperity and
equity in the lives of the people we serve" (2017). This organization works with different partners in
the community to help people with low incomes find

This paper will examine the role that Community Planning principles can play in Local Economic
Development (LED). Importantly, this report will aim to identify the causes an consequences of
economic disparity within communities, identify those individuals and groups that have the most to
contribute to LED in their community and finally discuss and examine a range of policy initiatives
that focus on sustainable economic outcomes for all members of the community network. It is also
hoped that this paper may provide a guide for students of urban and regional planning, as to how
human and financial goals need not be mutually exclusive of one another.
THE ISSUES
Economic growth, not just community bonding
In international business, the world is divided into developed and developing nations. The yardstick
used to measure this difference is typically economic. How then do we know when we have crossed
the line between a "developing" and a "developed" community? What
yardsticks are available to us? Typically, successful communities are measured in terms of
participation, support networks and a general willingness to action outcomes (more often human and
intangible outcomes) for that community. But while in terms of participation, a community may be
very wealthy, a large proportion may be just as poor in economic standards. Accordingly, it is
submitted that having implemented a community plan that succeeds in uniting a local area is only

Bowling Alone Summary
Social connections, civic engagement and civic trust influence our life dramatically. In Robert D.
Putnam's article, "Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital," his begins with the
argument that America's social capital is declining and the strength of American societies have
weakened. To support his claim, he analyzes multiple reasons for the decline such as, the movement
of women into the labor force, the mobility of individuals and the constant improvement of
technology. According to Putnam, "social capital refers to features of social organization such as
networks, norms and social trust that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit"
(384). In simpler terms, social capital is a combination of civic engagement and civic trust. If a
society has an abundance of social capital it will produce positive results and successful outcomes.
Such results include "better schools, faster economic development, lower crime, and more effective
government" (383). These results can significantly improve America's social capital. Putnam
believes that the revolution of bringing women into the workforce has slowed down the production
of social capital. According to the article, "It seems highly plausible that this social revolution
should have reduced the time and energy available for building social capital" (393). I do not agree
that women stepping into the workforce would slow down the production of social capital, In fact, I
believe women would increase civic

Taking a Look at Environmental Racism
Did you know that 35 out of 57 waste sites in the eastern part of Los Angeles were located in zip
codes with at least half the population consisting of Latinos? (Pulido 21) This is a direct and
apparent representation of environmental racism in our country. In particular, its existence could be
closely observed in the recent dispute of an urban farmland in South Central Los Angeles. Frankly,
environmental racism had little effect on the actual dissolution of the South Central farm, as it was
an issue of property rights. Instead, environmental racism played a significant role in the
confrontation process that led to the closure by excluding minority groups, especially Latinos, from
decision processes and obstructing their effort to conserve the farmland.
Twenty–five years ago, the city of Los Angeles obtained the South Central farmland under eminent
domain with the intention of building a waste incinerator. While this project failed to proceed, 400
community members were given the permission to farm the land. It provided a lot of support to the
community, which is inhabited mostly by low–income minorities. While aiding the farmers
themselves, it also brought monetary and psychological benefits to the neighborhood. Suing the city
for not utilizing the land as a public good, Ralph Horowitz, the original owner, successfully
recouped the property in 2006, which threatened the existence of the garden. Farmers were
forcefully moved out of the property and the South Central Farm

Community Reflection
I chose as my subject University of Cincinnati, the dining halls, the workers there, their personal
communities, the interactions between the workers and the students. and lastly, I am interested in the
workers that cross the bridge between worker and student and take advantage of the free classes. At
first I was interested mostly in the interactions between students and workers. Every time i walk into
a UC dining hall I am struck by the sense of community among the workers. Its so full of energy I
always want to be apart of it. By observation I want to better understand what its like to belong to
this specific community. Like all discourse communities, there is a common vernacular or dialogue,
that I would like to understand a little more clearly. I want to learn more about it, and understand
better the work life balance of this commune of labourers. And how UC helps to better the
environment. Does UC take steps to make the environment comfortable and enjoyable, and do the
employees enjoy their job? Because what the workers get out of their jobs directly affects the
community in and around UC and Cincinnati at large. I learned more about the jobs and the
university's role in these peoples lives. I would like to see how the university helps to improve these
workers lives. The university provides over 15,000 jobs to the Cincinnati area, and is one of the
largest job providers as well. I am curious to see if there are any other benefits and improvements to

(Middleton & Kelly, 1996). One of the biggest issues stems from a lack of facilitation on the larger
social issues involved with community service. When there is a proper forum to discuss the
experiences they receive while volunteering, students are given a chance to understand how policies
and civic involvement play a direct role in the lives of people in their communities. (Lakin &
Mahoney, 2006).
Another issue is content involved in the community service activities. "If teenagers are thrust into a
volunteer situation they don't understand or feel that they are simply being assigned made–up work,
it can actually have a detrimental effect" (Tugend, 2010). One way to make the most of volunteer
opportunities is to specifically design the content around areas of student development. By focusing
on key content areas, students learn how to use their current skill set to navigate new experiences
and difficult situations. (Lakin & Mahoney, 2006). A well organized and thoughtful volunteer
opportunity has proven time and time again to be a positive experience for youth. There are many
studies that discuss the character building benefits of service learning. Students who participate have
higher academic achievements, develop critical thinking, problem solving, decision making,
planning and organizing skills and expand their social circles. A student who volunteers is more
likely to volunteer and vote as adult. (Latham, 2003).

The New Green : Renovating Macon 's Public Spaces
The New Green: Renovating Macon's Public Spaces Public spaces are areas in the community in
which people can come into a common place and promotes community identity. Parks create an
environment for the community to reach out to each other as well as creating a public forum for the
community. We need to have the community more involved with each other and the best way to
create an enriching environment is if the community was able to come and share their many
identities to create a unique identity for the park. Tattnall Square Park hold a farmer's market every
week to promote community involvement and every so often brings in entertainment for the
community to experience. The green space that the parks will have will welcome other community
activities from other organizations and therefore allow the park to flourish. Parks are important to
the community because they lend a hand in creating an identity to who the community is. The more
inviting a community is, the more the community might intermingle, and the more inviting the
community will seem to others creating an environment that Village Green, Mid–City Square, and
Mill Hill needs. Creating a public space is not as easy as waving a wand. Creating a public space
take careful planning because a haphazard plan reduces the likeliness of encouraging community
involvement or even after community usage. In order for the public spaces to flourish, they need to

significant component in a group. To be a part of a community means that you are a part of group
where inclusion, support and friendship are highly–regarded. The beauty about community is that
everyone has their own gifts, talents, opinions and experiences to offer to it, therefore making each
member valuable. As a Resident Assistant, I intend to create an inclusive community in which each
person is accepted and encouraged regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual–orientation or ability.
By promoting diversity in my community, I hope that everyone gains a sense of belonging. In my
community, I will have an open mind and tolerant attitude and will encourage my residents to do the
same. Because understanding that no two residents are the same, I will conduct myself through
equity. I will try to learn about my residents individually so if

The Importance Of Community Development
Community development is defined as the development and utilization of a set of ongoing structures
which allow the community to meet its own needs. A subset of society that has a collective identity
and collectively responds to issues facing their community (McArdle REFERENCE). (ADD
SOMETHING HERE). The current evaluation concerning the Community Conservation Program
illustrates the importance of community conservation and gardening efforts in improving distressed
communities, promoting sustainable community development, and increasing civic engagement and
conservation practices. Community gardening programs were initially designed to increase
affordable food supplies during the world wars and Great Depression, but have evolved into broader,
more comprehensive and sustainable community development efforts. However, todays programs
are intended to provide green space to produce food and flowers, while assisting to reclaim
devastated urban areas, engage residents and other community improvement efforts, while
facilitating social interaction and a sense of community among residents. Prior research
demonstrates the importance of community conservation and gardening programs to revitalizing and
strengthening neighbourhoods, including reclaiming devastated urban areas and fostering
neighbourhood social ties, interaction, community involvement, political activism, and feelings of
safety and adjustment. The Program: An Evaluation Since 1982, the Community Conservation

What Is Appreciative Inquiry?
What is Appreciative Inquiry? By Bliss Browne, Imagine Chicago Appreciative inquiry is an
approach to organizational and community development that has been used successfully worldwide
to cultivate hope, build capacity, unleash collective appreciation and imagination, and bring about
positive change. It is based on the simple idea that human beings move in the direction of what we
ask about. When groups query human problems and conflicts, they often inadvertently magnify the
very problems they had hoped to resolve. Conversely, when groups study exalted human values and
achievements, like peak experiences, best practices, and worthy accomplishments, these phenomena
tend to flourish. AI deliberately asks positive questions around ... Show more content on

"How can we get this done now and how can I help?" infers confidence in an idea and a readiness to
act on it, building solidarity and momentum to move forward. A positive connection is reinforced by
asking "What makes you glad to live in this country?" instead of "What are the biggest problems
here?" Shifting ownership of the future to citizens is activated by "What can you do to make a
difference?" Appreciative Inquiry organizes sequences of positive questions around constructive
topics. The difference can be seen by citing the example of a conversation I had with a high school
class who wished to learn about their community. Four of the teams had originally chosen "crime"
as their area of study before I arrived and designed questions accordingly to ask the local police
chief. I asked them why they wanted to investigate crime. They said it was because they felt unsafe.
"What is it that you want?" I inquired. After struggling with the question, they finally responded, "I
guess we want to feel safe." "How do you think you're likely to feel after you ask the police chief
about crime in your neighborhood?" A girl responded that they would likely feel more scared,
because they would find out about more bad things that might happen to them. "What if you asked
him instead about community safety, important practices that support it, what the police are proud of

Proactively Responsive Circles
Circles Circles are a versatile RJ practice that can be used proactively and preventively to build
community and develop relationships or as an intervention to respond to wrongdoing, conflicts or
problems, describes Normore (2017), who adds that circles can counter typical hierarchical meetings
and can be adult or student led.. The use of a circle with nothing in the middle is intended "to respect
the value of every member and recognize our interconnectedness as well as challenging each person
in the circle to be accountable for being there as an active participant" (Vaandering, 2014, p. 518).

victim(s) describing the harm and its impact on them, followed by each participant describing the
impact of the incident on them so the offender is faced with the impact of their behavior on the
victim, those close to the victim, and on the offender's own family and friends. The victim expresses
their feelings and may ask questions about the incident. After a full discussion, the victim is asked to

My Service Learning Experience
Aside from the instances in my service learning experience that I was able to relate to sociocultural
factors and the impact that these factors had in her schooling, the experience of my student in my
service learning project was that she was there to be tutored in order to expand her academic
success. Both her and her sister attended the after school tutoring session each time I went. Her
mother always dropped them off, and after the tutoring session, I would discuss with the mother
Annie's progress for that session, what we did for that session, and things we were going to further
work on for our next session. At my last session, Annie's mother made the effort to tell me how
Annie had recently been announced as the highest scoring student on a particular exam and that she
was excelling more in school. This conversation particularly struck me because it made me believe
that in some small way, I contributed to some of that success that she had because of the intimate
relationship we had and how we connected and learned together as a team. This is an instance in my
service learning that affected me and made me truly believe that as a future educator, having a
culturally relevant pedagogy and connecting with all my students on a personal level will help them
to acquire academic success. Apart from my service learning experience, I completed my
community cultural wealth at the Montopolis Recreation Center, which is also where I did my
tutoring sessions. The Montopolis

Importance Of Building Community In Schools
Organizations tend to face many unique challenges. One of these challenges, especially in schools,
is building a sense of community. Thomas J. Sergiovanni's Building Community in Schools, first
published in 1994, asserts that in order for schools to improve in any and all aspects of the school
environment, the school should first place an emphasis on community building. Sergiovanni was a
professor of education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he taught in the school
leadership program and in the teacher education program. He worked in the education field from the
time of his graduation from the State University of New York in 1958 until his retirement in 2009.
During that time, he authored more than 30 textbooks and journal articles.
Throughout Building Community in Schools, Sergiovanni repeatedly refers to two Russian terms:
gemeinschaft (community) and gesellschaft (society). He uses these terms in order to better describe
the community building process within schools. The main theme of this book is that every person
within a school plays an important role in how effective the school can become by building on the
basic premise that a team can accomplish much more than an individual. The author touches on how
we are losing a sense of community and why this is not in the best interest of our children. He also
expounds on the importance of community building, not only in schools, but why it is essential to
our development as human beings. This book is a must read for any educator as it gives great insight
into the importance of community in education.
The book starts with a preface in which Sergiovanni builds the framework for the importance of
community in schools. Sergiovanni states that when a school has a sense of community it "lifts both
teachers and students to higher levels of understanding, commitment, and performance–beyond the
reaches of the shortcomings and difficulties they face in their everyday lives." Once again, this is the
basic premise for the entire book: that more can be accomplished by a team than an individual.
The beginning of the book focuses on how community loss has come about, how it is affecting our
schools, and why it is important to rebuild community.

Community Building Reflection
Ever since I started working in the education field, I have always been a big advocate of family
involvement and building partnerships between teachers, students, and families. When I started
working as a teacher, I right away got involved with our parent engagement committee. Our school
has done a wonderful job at meeting the standards that involve community and family involvement
(Missouri Leader Standard 4, and Professional Standards for Educational Leaders Standard 8). We
have a great partnership with our before and after school program, and part of that partnership was
built the year before, as I worked for LINC, and knew I was going to be transitioning into the
classroom. I worked on making sure that partnership was established, and as a LINC coordinator, I
wanted to make sure our partnership would benefit the school, the program, and our families.
Currently, we have great families who attend our events, and we also have a great school, with very
supportive staff who is whiling to stay after school for events, but our enrollment has decreased. We
have small class sizes, compared to our district, and while this is great for learning, we are
struggling with recruitment.
Knowing that we need to recruit, our school has started taking actions to bring more people from the
community into our school. Many community members do not know that for students to attend our
school, they just need to be within the KCPS boundaries. Families also have the assumption that you
can only attend our school if you speak Spanish, but we benefit more from having English speakers
in our school. Lately we are trying to get our name out to the KCPS community. Part of that is
attending more events, connecting with churches, recruitment events, and just simply passing out
flyers about our school to people we meet.
Last week I attended a Shark Tank Teacher Edition, where my co–teacher and I presented to
community members a project about getting funding for Spanish books. This was also a great
opportunity to get our school's name out to various stakeholders. We had a booth with information
about our dual language program, and ways people can help our program grow. Later that week we
also attended a Robotics scrimmage, and part of was

The Negative Effects Of Run-Down Buildings On The Community

Negative Effects of Run–down Buildings on the Community All across the US, cities are constantly
evolving by tearing down outdated buildings and erecting new structures in their places that serve to
grow and improve the community as a whole. However, when a city either does not have the funds
or the communal support to tear down a run–down building, this evolutionary process is halted. In
nature, organisms must adapt to keep up with their ever–changing environments. This same concept
goes for communities that wish to keep up with the increased modernization we are seeing across
the country. When worn down structures are allowed existence, they hurt the community in many
ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of those buildings, 83 percent showed signs of illegal use by prostitutes, drug dealers, property
criminals, and others (Spelman). In 2012, more than 2,600 crimes were reported in Chicago's
abandoned buildings and lots. This equates to an average of 7 reported crimes a day (Podmolik).
This astounding amount of crime all stems from run–down buildings providing a safe haven for
criminals to operate. In Spelman's study, he concluded that securing abandoned buildings is a highly
cost–effective crime control tactic for communities plagued with lawful misconduct (Spelman).
Finally, run–down buildings lower property values of homes and structures around them. In a study
conducted in 2001 on property values around vacated buildings in Philadelphia, it was found that
homes within 150 feet of abandoned property suffered a net value loss of $7,630 (Bass). This
negative impact that run–down buildings have on the housing market plagues cities in many
different areas. For example, in Detroit, Michigan, homes have a median value of $42,600, which is
the second–lowest property value in the nation. Also, in Flint, Michigan, another city with a high
percentage of abandoned buildings, home values are the lowest in the nation at a median worth of a
meager $26,000 (Wilkinson). The number of run–down buildings are inversely proportional to the
health of the housing market in a community, for as the

Paul Goldberger's Disconnected Urbanism
Life in the city is often chaotic and fast–paced. It is as quick as a television dinner. Often, people are
forgetting the art of appreciation. Things go unnoticed like a pebble under a shoe, like sparkling
windows on corporate buildings. Now, people are typically giving more time to their technological
devices– which is not necessarily a terrible thing. If anything, it speaks more of an imbalance. There
is a wider disconnect in every day social interactions (communications) and public spaces (location).
It has been noted by a creator of public spaces, Goldberger, that people are "there but not there".
They have closed themselves off from experiencing what is right in front of them. For example, the
average adult spends seven hours on a technological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
J. Kennedy poem Death of a window Washer explores the social side of human nature with its
poetry. The irony of this works attests more of the apathetic nature of people rather than a
socializing community or another urban area. "He dropped the way you'd slam an obstinate sash.
His split belt like a shade unrolling, flapping". Instead of the sentences being overly flowery like
Goldberger's essay, they are direct and blunt which gives this poem its own eye–catching effect.
Additionally, there is a common misinterpretation that the nameless, window washer committed
suicide by jumping off the ledge. This misinterpretation could arise from the window washer's death
being viewed by a person in the city or because the individuals receive more attention in the story
"He'd made the city pause briefly to suffer". Initially, readers believe the washer's death pains the
city. However, by the next line "His taking ample room for once. In rather a tedious while the rinsed
street, left to dry". the citizens are more affected by the problems the window washer caused than
actual care or concern for him. His untimely death is as bothersome as stain on a shirt; hard to rinse
off. They are left with displeasure of dealing with his death. The people "suffer" as they impatiently
wait for the removal of his corpse. "His legacy is mute: one final gleaming pane of glass". Why is
his legacy mute? He was a human being that contributed to society; he cleaned a public space. If

The Cultural Landscape Of Asian And Latin American Countries
Abstract
Street markets have always been a significant aspect of the cultural landscape of Asian and Latin
American countries such as China, Thailand, India, Brazil and Mexico. These markets become
creators of vital public space and with time, through their actions, appropriate loose space and make
a permanent place for themselves in the collective memory of people, eventually contributing to the
cultural identity of these neighborhoods. Yet, this potential of markets to become successful and
vibrant social spaces and a solution to the class divided hierarchical cities of today, is often not
acknowledged or accepted by civic authorities. The State's policy towards these street markets in
developing countries has largely been to eliminate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Informal Markets: Creators of Public Space
Public Markets play a central role in the formation of public culture and have an articulated
relationship with space and society. They morphologically shape space and also shape social
networks and economic systems. A large share of market not absorbed by formal economic activities
becomes a part of the informal market. It also represents a significant percentage of the national
economy, and guarantees jobs to a large number of people. They are rather a sign of heroic
entrepreneurship (Hernando de Soto 2000), or of 'informal survivalism' as (Mike David 2004) puts
it, a primarily mode of livelihood in majority of the Third World countries. Through their act of an
informalized production of space, they maximize limited space or create space where no space
exists in commercially viable prime locations, thereby creating an economic opportunity out of it
and social space as a by–product.
While market places fulfil economic considerations, by providing an alternative means of
livelihoods to millions, they also perform an indispensable social function by becoming communal
spaces, giving life to neighborhoods. Overtime, they become an intrinsic part of the cultural
landscape of any neighborhood or city and become places of social gathering at the street level.
They act as a catchment area for a community, and provide food, entertainment and social
interaction and hence, they successfully

o Listen! – Build relationships with the community and invite community members to the table to
share ideas.
Develop clarity about what the group hopes to achieve together – Create a list of key priority areas:
o Behavioral objectives. These objectives look at changing the behaviors of people (what they are
doing and saying) and the products (or results) of their behaviors. o Community–level outcome
objectives. These are often the product or result of behavior change in many people. They are more
focused on a community level instead of an individual level. o Process objectives. These are the
objectives that provide the groundwork or implementation necessary to achieve your other
objectives.
Make targeted investments in neighborhoods where residents have been negatively impacted by a
history of disinvestment. o Consider race, class, and power from the outset when defining and
redefining problems, to address root causes. o Find relationships between the community's problems

By adopting elements of UCC, the Onling gaming community web portal can provide all the
information that users need, without forcing them to research external information sites, therefore
becoming far more self serving and robust. Web Portal Design Web portals in the past were seen
primarily as gateways as was stated earlier, thereby limiting the creative control administrators
could have over the design of the web site. Due to the shift in functionality of web portals however,
as well as the added value of UCC, it has become increasingly challenging to design web sites
where users can find exactly what they are looking for (Fang, et al, 2004). Prominent gaming portals
IGN (Fox Media, 1996), and Gamespot (Deemer, et al, 1996), display the attributes of good web
design, limiting the amount of useless hyperlinks, and utilises taxonomy for articles to make them
easier for users to access the information they need. Gamespot also allows for a degree of
personalisation within the site allowing users to select which background and forum theme they
wish to use, whose selection will be stored with the user account information, and this
personalisation can help the users feel connected to the portal, thereby ensuring their continued
presence (Bellas, et al, 2004). A web portal needs

Reflective Essay On Community Activities
1. MRC Community Participation The opportunities for community building within MRC are
abundant and seem to never end. This chance to connect, build, and maintain relationships with
fellow peers interested in research and a community is a priceless experience that is very unique to
MRC. In just a few short months, I have actively aimed to attend every event that was offered,
soaking in all of the opportunities that MRC has to offer. While I haven't made it to every event, I do
try my best to find time for my community. Firstly, my favorite event that MRC hosts is MRC tea
time, for this is a great way to meet MRC alumni, converse with the wonderful staff, and share
stories with friends from the fourth and fifth floors, all while drinking warm tea! I truly love this
event and I met one of my great friends there, Milan, and a helpful mentor, Maddie! Because
picking favorite MRC events feels like picking my favorite family members, I am now just going to
list some of the amazing events I have been to. The creativity within MRC is absolutely astonishing!
This is evident by all of the fun events planned by our own members. I have been to an event for
building zen gardens, and solving a murder case, and a game night where there was a karaoke

Understanding Community And Social Networks
Understanding community and social networks is important in the Child and Youth Counsellor
(CYC) field in order to help create and encourage positive communities and networks for the youth
within the CYC care. Community and social networks are important for self–esteem, sense of
belonging, and overall happier and healthier individuals. Understanding the communities or social
networks within an individual's life will assist in the appropriate goal making and action planning in
order to meet the individual's needs. As described by Oxford Dictionary, a community is "a group of
people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common" where as a social
network is "a network of social interactions and personal relationships" Examples of a community
include neighbourhood, church or place of employment and examples of social network includes
friends, families, classmates and colleagues. ("Community", 2014; "Social Network", 2014).
Despite this traditional definition of a social network, it is also currently described as "a dedicated
website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting
information, comments, messages, images, etc." Facebook, twitter and Instagram are all examples of
this. ("Social Network", 2014).
Does the change in the meaning of social networking noted above have an impact on the traditional
community and on youth? Despite the differences between community and social networking, they
are intertwined, and

  • 1. Resident Assistants Being involved groups is essential to everyday living and many of us will belong to a variety of groups at the same time. For example, families, social, sports, support, learning management and committees groups. A group is "a small, face–to–face collection of persons who interact to accomplish some purpose" (Schriver, 1998). In other words, a group is collection of diverse people with common characteristics or purpose. A group can consist of any number of people from any number of races, ethnicities, culture, age, and or religious background. People involved in groups interact, engage, support, and identify with each other and are aware of each other in the group, often meet regularly at pre–determined destinations and times. • 3. Community Development In Social Work Introduction Community development (CD) has been playing an important role within the society as it is a critical practice that identifies and attempts to address unequal relations of power (Forde & Lynch, 2015). In CD, social capital is an important term as it refers to the networks and norms that enable collective action. In general, social capital is the level of trust between members within the community. Social workers need to understand and empower the social capital to strengthen the community through collective action based on the existing resources. The CD involves in a continuing process in which maximises the opportunities for people to work collaboratively to identify and fulfil their needs based on the existing assets within the community (Kenny, 2011). As the society is not static due to the uncertainty and continual change, CD has to be flexible and fit within the context and the needs of the targeted community. According to AASW (2010), social workers are committed to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve the equitable access to social, economic, environmental and political resources. As a social work undergraduate, we acknowledge the significant impact of CD through the positive change in the society. Our group through the course of this semester has learnt about the process of community work and community development. They are inter–related and beneficial to the community in which address and meet the needs of members. The progress of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Relationship Between Community And Community Development The world is built by tens of thousands of communities and its participation is indispensable to the world development. Community's development depends on the economic and progress of the world. The subject of community is people. Therefore, the communities even the world cannot prosper without the sustainable people. This article focuses on sustainable people, economy, education and China's experience in community development and meanwhile explains the relationship between community, community development(CD) and community economic development(CED). Everyone in the world belongs to a group or an organization. People stay together to share time and all other benefits, keep same thinking and values and live in their own place, that is how community naturally created. Different individual ability, local culture and environment can lead to different communities. For instance, community economy in east, middle, or west region of Canada has big differences because they develop in different level. Some of the people in the community may be wealthy and highly educated, while the others are living in high–poverty and lower educated communities. According to Lotz and MacIntyre (2003), "Common to all humans these days is a desire to exercise some control over their own lives and those of their communities. Community development is about showing how this can be done, and how personal and local development can be linked in mutually beneficial ways." (p. 9) People always protect and ... • 7. Peace Building through Community Involvement For it isn't enough to talk of peace, one must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in peace, one must work at it. –Eleanor Roosevelt Over the course of history, society, economy, and political affiliations have all exhibited devastating impacts sought on by violence in conflict. As seen in the media, violence in all forms, whether it be direct violence or structural violence, have had reoccurring themes of halted or negative development and have been linked to psychological trauma in those who have personally witnessed or been a victim of violent acts. Although conflict is inevitable in a world with a variety of different cultural beliefs, political systems and resource availability, there are a variety of ways in which conflicts can be resolved without resorting to the use of violence. Within many fragile contexts, or "state structures that lack political will or capacity to provide the basic functions needed for poverty reduction, development and to safeguard the security and human rights of their population," (OECD DAC, 2007), communities have maintained impressive resiliency qualities. Through the development of community–based peace building organizations, communities that exist within fragile contexts would have the tools to maintain resiliency and sustainability during violent conflicts. The term peace building was originally coined by Johan Galtung in the 1970's and has since been redefined by several international institutions and NGOs (United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Consequently, the need for shelter is increasing to accommodate the growing urban poor. The idea of a shorter block and network of narrow streets put forward in the book promotes the idea of human interaction since it provides different possibilities of reaching the same location; encouraging informal encounters and interactions. This book helps to understand how certain physical environment and sociological setup helps in building a sense of community of a neighbourhood. How can our acts of making become more effective by working with rather than against human patterns of use and interaction, elaborating forms of life and knowledge embedded in urban environments? Taking the research further, the book "The New Urbanism: Toward an Architecture of Community" by Peter Katz elaborates on the theory of New Urbanism and present principles that focus on the idea that certain physical setup can enhance a social behaviour. The Positive Impacts Of Community Development In South Africa Community development around the world is being practised by various entities, addressing various socio–economic issues that are unique to different communities worldwide. According to Bhattacharyya (2004), community development initiatives are dominant in democratic countries. There are various initiatives that have led to significant shifts in the wellbeing of communities using different development tools to develop communities around the world. South African, which is a democratic country has one of the highest income gabs in the world. The country's income difference is evident in many townships/rural areas around the country's underdeveloped communities. The positive impact of community development may be seen in the fields of public health, micro–macro development, food and violence (Bhattacharyya, 2004). Community development is multi–faceted. Bhattacharyya (2004) argues that community development is not a distinct field and that not everything that is being done by developers to improve communities should not be regarded as community development. Bhattacharyya (2004) states that it should only be regarded as community development if the improvement pursues solidarity and agency which can be achieved through adhering to the principles of self–help, felt needs and participation. Old (i.e. traditional) social movements such as organized labour or trade unions were long considered to be change agents, as they "engaged in a variety of educational activities" and were the "single most important provider of non–vocational social purpose adult education for working people" (Spencer, 1995, p. 32); however, the emergence of new social movements (NSM) in the post–industrial economy has focused attention on how such activities act as learning sites for adult education. This research examines how the Women's Informal Network (WIN) organized in Citrix Systems, a U.S. based multinational software company, can be viewed as an NSM for adult education within the latter organization. This study looks at the development of WIN, the issues that are most important to WIN, and the values that motivate WIN to act. The study also investigates both what and how adults in the WIN organization are learning as they participate in the group's activities. • 25. Alternative Perspective Of Community Building Community building is "creating communities that work for the low–income families who live there" (Schriever, 2015, p. 274). Coming up with a way for the community to work as a whole, to ensure that the low–income families are getting the basic needs met. According to Walsh another way of looking at community building is by taking a more comprehensive approach to poverty. Walsh believes that by taking a more comprehensive approach of poverty you will see the interwoven problems, such as poor, bad health, and racism (as cited in Schriever, 2015). To create a well–rounded community, the low–income families living in poverty need to have their voices heard. The only way that others can fully understand their experiences and struggles of living in poverty is to hear about it. This is how the alternative perspective of community building can be implemented into a community. Poverty is an issue that Duluth faces, just like most cities. Roughly 17.8% of Duluth's residents live in poverty ("Duluth, Minnesota," 2017). Therefore, using the alternative perspective of community building is very important to see if the city of Duluth is taking steps to improve or reduce poverty. Community Action Duluth is an organization that works towards "empowering and engaging the Duluth community to eliminate poverty, and create prosperity and equity in the lives of the people we serve" (2017). • 30. Bowling Alone Summary Social connections, civic engagement and civic trust influence our life dramatically. In Robert D. Putnam's article, "Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital," his begins with the argument that America's social capital is declining and the strength of American societies have weakened. To support his claim, he analyzes multiple reasons for the decline such as, the movement of women into the labor force, the mobility of individuals and the constant improvement of technology. According to Putnam, "social capital refers to features of social organization such as networks, norms and social trust that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit" (384). In simpler terms, social capital is a combination of civic engagement and civic trust. If a society has an abundance of social capital it will produce positive results and successful outcomes. Such results include "better schools, faster economic development, lower crime, and more effective government" (383). These results can significantly improve America's social capital. Putnam believes that the revolution of bringing women into the workforce has slowed down the production of social capital. According to the article, "It seems highly plausible that this social revolution should have reduced the time and energy available for building social capital" (393). I do not agree that women stepping into the workforce would slow down the production of social capital, In fact, I believe women would increase civic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taking a Look at Environmental Racism Did you know that 35 out of 57 waste sites in the eastern part of Los Angeles were located in zip codes with at least half the population consisting of Latinos? (Pulido 21) This is a direct and apparent representation of environmental racism in our country. In particular, its existence could be closely observed in the recent dispute of an urban farmland in South Central Los Angeles. Frankly, environmental racism had little effect on the actual dissolution of the South Central farm, as it was an issue of property rights. Instead, environmental racism played a significant role in the confrontation process that led to the closure by excluding minority groups, especially Latinos, from decision processes and obstructing their effort to conserve the farmland. Twenty–five years ago, the city of Los Angeles obtained the South Central farmland under eminent domain with the intention of building a waste incinerator. While this project failed to proceed, 400 community members were given the permission to farm the land. It provided a lot of support to the community, which is inhabited mostly by low–income minorities. While aiding the farmers themselves, it also brought monetary and psychological benefits to the neighborhood. Suing the city for not utilizing the land as a public good, Ralph Horowitz, the original owner, successfully recouped the property in 2006, which threatened the existence of the garden. Community Reflection I chose as my subject University of Cincinnati, the dining halls, the workers there, their personal communities, the interactions between the workers and the students. and lastly, I am interested in the workers that cross the bridge between worker and student and take advantage of the free classes. At first I was interested mostly in the interactions between students and workers. Every time i walk into a UC dining hall I am struck by the sense of community among the workers. Its so full of energy I always want to be apart of it. By observation I want to better understand what its like to belong to this specific community. Like all discourse communities, there is a common vernacular or dialogue, that I would like to understand a little more clearly. I want to learn more about it, and understand better the work life balance of this commune of labourers. And how UC helps to better the environment. Does UC take steps to make the environment comfortable and enjoyable, and do the employees enjoy their job? Because what the workers get out of their jobs directly affects the community in and around UC and Cincinnati at large. I learned more about the jobs and the university's role in these peoples lives. I would like to see how the university helps to improve these workers lives. The university provides over 15,000 jobs to the Cincinnati area, and is one of the largest job providers as well. Adults who don't regularly interact with high school students may only see the negative side of the adolescents in their community. In fact, "sixty–one percent of American adults are convinced that today's youth face a crisis in their values and morals, look at teenagers with misgiving and view them as undisciplined, disrespectful, and unfriendly" (Latham, 2003). One way to help change the attitudes of adults and also encourage youth personal development is service learning programs in local communities. When there is a proper forum to discuss the experiences they receive while volunteering, students are given a chance to understand how policies and civic involvement play a direct role in the lives of people in their communities. (Lakin & Mahoney, 2006). Another issue is content involved in the community service activities. "If teenagers are thrust into a volunteer situation they don't understand or feel that they are simply being assigned made–up work, it can actually have a detrimental effect" (Tugend, 2010). One way to make the most of volunteer opportunities is to specifically design the content around areas of student development. By focusing on key content areas, students learn how to use their current skill set to navigate new experiences and difficult situations. (Lakin & Mahoney, 2006). A well organized and thoughtful volunteer opportunity has proven time and time again to be a positive experience for youth. There are many studies that discuss the character building benefits of service learning. The New Green : Renovating Macon 's Public Spaces The New Green: Renovating Macon's Public Spaces Public spaces are areas in the community in which people can come into a common place and promotes community identity. Parks create an environment for the community to reach out to each other as well as creating a public forum for the community. We need to have the community more involved with each other and the best way to create an enriching environment is if the community was able to come and share their many identities to create a unique identity for the park. Tattnall Square Park hold a farmer's market every week to promote community involvement and every so often brings in entertainment for the community to experience. The green space that the parks will have will welcome other community activities from other organizations and therefore allow the park to flourish. Parks are important to the community because they lend a hand in creating an identity to who the community is. The more inviting a community is, the more the community might intermingle, and the more inviting the community will seem to others creating an environment that Village Green, Mid–City Square, and Mill Hill needs. Please talk about your experience with working with diverse groups of people and how you interact with others that are different from you in a community setting. Community is the difference between being and belonging. It is just too easy to just be a part of a group, but to feel like you belong to the group is far more meaningful. You can go to the meetings and know everyone's names but none of that means anything if you don't feel that you are a significant component in a group. To be a part of a community means that you are a part of group where inclusion, support and friendship are highly–regarded. The beauty about community is that everyone has their own gifts, talents, opinions and experiences to offer to it, therefore making each member valuable. As a Resident Assistant, I intend to create an inclusive community in which each person is accepted and encouraged regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual–orientation or ability. By promoting diversity in my community, I hope that everyone gains a sense of belonging. By Bliss Browne, Imagine Chicago Appreciative inquiry is an approach to organizational and community development that has been used successfully worldwide to cultivate hope, build capacity, unleash collective appreciation and imagination, and bring about positive change. It is based on the simple idea that human beings move in the direction of what we ask about. When groups query human problems and conflicts, they often inadvertently magnify the very problems they had hoped to resolve. Conversely, when groups study exalted human values and achievements, like peak experiences, best practices, and worthy accomplishments, these phenomena tend to flourish. Shifting ownership of the future to citizens is activated by "What can you do to make a difference?" Appreciative Inquiry organizes sequences of positive questions around constructive topics. The difference can be seen by citing the example of a conversation I had with a high school class who wished to learn about their community. Four of the teams had originally chosen "crime" as their area of study before I arrived and designed questions accordingly to ask the local police chief. I asked them why they wanted to investigate crime. They said it was because they felt unsafe. "What is it that you want?" I inquired. After struggling with the question, they finally responded, "I guess we want to feel safe." "How do you think you're likely to feel after you ask the police chief about crime in your neighborhood?" My Service Learning Experience Aside from the instances in my service learning experience that I was able to relate to sociocultural factors and the impact that these factors had in her schooling, the experience of my student in my service learning project was that she was there to be tutored in order to expand her academic success. Both her and her sister attended the after school tutoring session each time I went. Her mother always dropped them off, and after the tutoring session, I would discuss with the mother Annie's progress for that session, what we did for that session, and things we were going to further work on for our next session. At my last session, Annie's mother made the effort to tell me how Annie had recently been announced as the highest scoring student on a particular exam and that she was excelling more in school. This conversation particularly struck me because it made me believe that in some small way, I contributed to some of that success that she had because of the intimate relationship we had and how we connected and learned together as a team. This is an instance in my service learning that affected me and made me truly believe that as a future educator, having a culturally relevant pedagogy and connecting with all my students on a personal level will help them to acquire academic success. • 57. Importance Of Building Community In Schools Organizations tend to face many unique challenges. One of these challenges, especially in schools, is building a sense of community. Thomas J. Sergiovanni's Building Community in Schools, first published in 1994, asserts that in order for schools to improve in any and all aspects of the school environment, the school should first place an emphasis on community building. Sergiovanni was a professor of education at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he taught in the school leadership program and in the teacher education program. He worked in the education field from the time of his graduation from the State University of New York in 1958 until his retirement in 2009. During that time, he authored more than 30 textbooks and journal articles. Throughout Building Community in Schools, Sergiovanni repeatedly refers to two Russian terms: gemeinschaft (community) and gesellschaft (society). He uses these terms in order to better describe the community building process within schools. The main theme of this book is that every person within a school plays an important role in how effective the school can become by building on the basic premise that a team can accomplish much more than an individual. The author touches on how we are losing a sense of community and why this is not in the best interest of our children. He also expounds on the importance of community building, not only in schools, but why it is essential to our development as human beings. This book is a must read for any educator as it gives great insight into the importance of community in education. The book starts with a preface in which Sergiovanni builds the framework for the importance of community in schools. Sergiovanni states that when a school has a sense of community it "lifts both teachers and students to higher levels of understanding, commitment, and performance–beyond the reaches of the shortcomings and difficulties they face in their everyday lives." Once again, this is the basic premise for the entire book: that more can be accomplished by a team than an individual. The beginning of the book focuses on how community loss has come about, how it is affecting our schools, and why it is important to rebuild community. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Community Building Reflection Ever since I started working in the education field, I have always been a big advocate of family involvement and building partnerships between teachers, students, and families. When I started working as a teacher, I right away got involved with our parent engagement committee. Our school has done a wonderful job at meeting the standards that involve community and family involvement (Missouri Leader Standard 4, and Professional Standards for Educational Leaders Standard 8). We have a great partnership with our before and after school program, and part of that partnership was built the year before, as I worked for LINC, and knew I was going to be transitioning into the classroom. I worked on making sure that partnership was established, and as a LINC coordinator, I wanted to make sure our partnership would benefit the school, the program, and our families. Currently, we have great families who attend our events, and we also have a great school, with very supportive staff who is whiling to stay after school for events, but our enrollment has decreased. We have small class sizes, compared to our district, and while this is great for learning, we are struggling with recruitment. Knowing that we need to recruit, our school has started taking actions to bring more people from the community into our school. Many community members do not know that for students to attend our school, they just need to be within the KCPS boundaries. Families also have the assumption that you can only attend our school if you speak Spanish, but we benefit more from having English speakers in our school. Lately we are trying to get our name out to the KCPS community. Part of that is attending more events, connecting with churches, recruitment events, and just simply passing out flyers about our school to people we meet. Last week I attended a Shark Tank Teacher Edition, where my co–teacher and I presented to community members a project about getting funding for Spanish books. However, when a city either does not have the funds or the communal support to tear down a run–down building, this evolutionary process is halted. In 2012, more than 2,600 crimes were reported in Chicago's abandoned buildings and lots. This equates to an average of 7 reported crimes a day (Podmolik). This astounding amount of crime all stems from run–down buildings providing a safe haven for criminals to operate. In Spelman's study, he concluded that securing abandoned buildings is a highly cost–effective crime control tactic for communities plagued with lawful misconduct (Spelman). Finally, run–down buildings lower property values of homes and structures around them. In a study conducted in 2001 on property values around vacated buildings in Philadelphia, it was found that homes within 150 feet of abandoned property suffered a net value loss of $7,630 (Bass). This negative impact that run–down buildings have on the housing market plagues cities in many different areas. For example, in Detroit, Michigan, homes have a median value of $42,600, which is the second–lowest property value in the nation. Also, in Flint, Michigan, another city with a high percentage of abandoned buildings, home values are the lowest in the nation at a median worth of a meager $26,000 (Wilkinson). The irony of this works attests more of the apathetic nature of people rather than a socializing community or another urban area. "He dropped the way you'd slam an obstinate sash. His split belt like a shade unrolling, flapping". Instead of the sentences being overly flowery like Goldberger's essay, they are direct and blunt which gives this poem its own eye–catching effect. Additionally, there is a common misinterpretation that the nameless, window washer committed suicide by jumping off the ledge. This misinterpretation could arise from the window washer's death being viewed by a person in the city or because the individuals receive more attention in the story "He'd made the city pause briefly to suffer". Initially, readers believe the washer's death pains the city. However, by the next line "His taking ample room for once. In rather a tedious while the rinsed street, left to dry". the citizens are more affected by the problems the window washer caused than actual care or concern for him. His untimely death is as bothersome as stain on a shirt; hard to rinse off. They are left with displeasure of dealing with his death. The people "suffer" as they impatiently wait for the removal of his corpse. "His legacy is mute: one final gleaming pane of glass". Why is his legacy mute? He was a human being that contributed to society; he cleaned a public space. If someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The Cultural Landscape Of Asian And Latin American Countries Abstract Street markets have always been a significant aspect of the cultural landscape of Asian and Latin American countries such as China, Thailand, India, Brazil and Mexico. These markets become creators of vital public space and with time, through their actions, appropriate loose space and make a permanent place for themselves in the collective memory of people, eventually contributing to the cultural identity of these neighborhoods. Yet, this potential of markets to become successful and vibrant social spaces and a solution to the class divided hierarchical cities of today, is often not acknowledged or accepted by civic authorities. The State's policy towards these street markets in developing countries has largely been to eliminate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Informal Markets: Creators of Public Space Public Markets play a central role in the formation of public culture and have an articulated relationship with space and society. They morphologically shape space and also shape social networks and economic systems. A large share of market not absorbed by formal economic activities becomes a part of the informal market. It also represents a significant percentage of the national economy, and guarantees jobs to a large number of people. They are rather a sign of heroic entrepreneurship (Hernando de Soto 2000), or of 'informal survivalism' as (Mike David 2004) puts it, a primarily mode of livelihood in majority of the Third World countries. Through their act of an informalized production of space, they maximize limited space or create space where no space exists in commercially viable prime locations, thereby creating an economic opportunity out of it and social space as a by–product. While market places fulfil economic considerations, by providing an alternative means of livelihoods to millions, they also perform an indispensable social function by becoming communal spaces, giving life to neighborhoods. Overtime, they become an intrinsic part of the cultural landscape of any neighborhood or city and become places of social gathering at the street level. They act as a catchment area for a community, and provide food, entertainment and social interaction and hence, they successfully ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By adopting elements of UCC, the Onling gaming community web portal can provide all the information that users need, without forcing them to research external information sites, therefore becoming far more self serving and robust. Web Portal Design Web portals in the past were seen primarily as gateways as was stated earlier, thereby limiting the creative control administrators could have over the design of the web site. Due to the shift in functionality of web portals however, as well as the added value of UCC, it has become increasingly challenging to design web sites where users can find exactly what they are looking for (Fang, et al, 2004). Prominent gaming portals IGN (Fox Media, 1996), and Gamespot (Deemer, et al, 1996), display the attributes of good web design, limiting the amount of useless hyperlinks, and utilises taxonomy for articles to make them easier for users to access the information they need. Gamespot also allows for a degree of personalisation within the site allowing users to select which background and forum theme they wish to use, whose selection will be stored with the user account information, and this personalisation can help the users feel connected to the portal, thereby ensuring their continued presence (Bellas, et al, 2004). • 75. Reflective Essay On Community Activities 1. MRC Community Participation The opportunities for community building within MRC are abundant and seem to never end. This chance to connect, build, and maintain relationships with fellow peers interested in research and a community is a priceless experience that is very unique to MRC. In just a few short months, I have actively aimed to attend every event that was offered, soaking in all of the opportunities that MRC has to offer. While I haven't made it to every event, I do try my best to find time for my community. Firstly, my favorite event that MRC hosts is MRC tea time, for this is a great way to meet MRC alumni, converse with the wonderful staff, and share stories with friends from the fourth and fifth floors, all while drinking warm tea! I truly love this event and I met one of my great friends there, Milan, and a helpful mentor, Maddie! Because picking favorite MRC events feels like picking my favorite family members, I am now just going to list some of the amazing events I have been to. The creativity within MRC is absolutely astonishing! This is evident by all of the fun events planned by our own members. I have been to an event for building zen gardens, and solving a murder case, and a game night where there was a karaoke machine. I have watched La La Land with fourth floor middle Jo and popped my stress away with Crystal and her floor. STEPS encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. • 77. Understanding Community And Social Networks Understanding community and social networks is important in the Child and Youth Counsellor (CYC) field in order to help create and encourage positive communities and networks for the youth within the CYC care. Community and social networks are important for self–esteem, sense of belonging, and overall happier and healthier individuals. Understanding the communities or social networks within an individual's life will assist in the appropriate goal making and action planning in order to meet the individual's needs. As described by Oxford Dictionary, a community is "a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common" where as a social network is "a network of social interactions and personal relationships" Examples of a community include neighbourhood, church or place of employment and examples of social network includes friends, families, classmates and colleagues. ("Community", 2014; "Social Network", 2014). Despite this traditional definition of a social network, it is also currently described as "a dedicated website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc." Facebook, twitter and Instagram are all examples of this. ("Social Network", 2014). Does the change in the meaning of social networking noted above have an impact on the traditional community and on youth? Despite the differences between community and social networking, they are intertwined, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
