The majority of energy in BC is produced by hydroelectric power plants. With so much of B.C's
energy dependent on hydro, what were to happen if these power plants were to be dried up due to
climate change. That's why I need to focus on energy diversity so BC always has a source of energy

miles and is only semi–molten. The third down, the outer core, starts at 2500 miles and is
completely liquid. Finally, the inner core is solid and is made of nickel and iron. It starts at a depth
of 4,000 miles and is 9,000 degrees fahrenheit.

First scientists discover a hot spot or area with a lot of volcanic activity, and then they drill into the
earth very deep. Then one pipe leads straight up to the earth's surface containing hot air, gas, or fluid
of some kind coming from the earth's inner core. This hot fluid, generally steam, is caught in the
turbine that was created to run the plant. This turbine then revolves to create the energy needed for
the generator. Of course, as seen in the figure, there is an injection well so that the hot air/fluid can
be pumped back into the earth to create a cycle.
How the steam is created into electricity from the generator
With this form of using a generator to utilize the steam naturally pumped up from the inner part of
the earth, geothermal energy is able to be produced and then that energy, in the form of electricity, is
pumped and directed to where it needs to go.

well" brings in the hot air/steam which is then pumped through the "heat exchanger." This is all then

When we go deep into the history of geothermal energy or rather archeologically, it is clear the first
human use of this discovery was in the North America and this was sometime around 10,000 years
ago with the settlement of the Paleo–Indians near hot springs that served as a source of warmth and
healing purposes. In 1904, Italian scientist, Piero Ginori, the Co Prince Piero Ginori Continti,
established the first geothermal electric power plant in which power was generated by the use of
steam. Ginori is actually the person who is known for the discovery of geothermal energy,

Renewable Energy : Wind Power And Geothermal Energy
The term "renewable" in the context of energy sources means that it can be utilized without
depleting or weakening the supply. In other words, the earth creates that resource at a rate faster than
we can consume, therefore, we can use it without affecting the atmosphere and other natural
resources. Numerous forms of renewable energy that have been discovered and are now utilized, the
two types I have decided to extensively research and focus my post on are wind power and
geothermal energy.
Wind Power
Wind turbines, formerly known as windmills, convert the power of wind into electricity. More
specifically, wind creates kinetic energy, which causes the blades to turn. Those blades are attached
to a rotating shaft that creates and sends electricity to a power grid (EERE, n.d.a). The sun's rays
unevenly heating the planet creates wind, reasons for the inconsistent distribution of heat are uneven
terrain and the earth's rotation around the sun (EERE, n.d.b). It is considered a renewable energy
since there will be wind as long as the sun heats the planet. Some of the most common placed for
this to happen is in large bodies of water and hill sides, anywhere wind is created.
Wind energy has been growing quickly due to its many advantages, two that I believe make the
largest impact are how cost effective it is and that it is a completely clean source of energy. It is one

better resources to replace fossil fuels to reduce carbon footprints. The earth is a great source of
natural energy therefore thermal energy is one of the most abundant resources. There are many types

heat renewable energy converts natural heat into electricity resources. Geothermal energy represents

The International Geothermal Association (IGA) has reported that 10,715 megawatts (MW) of

in 2010. This represents a 20% increase in geothermal power online capacity since 2005. IGA
projected this would grow to 18,500 MW by 2015, due to a large number of projects that were under
consideration, often in areas previously assumed to have little exploitable resource.
In Iceland, the Philippines, and El Salvador, geothermal energy accounts for over 25% of national
electricity production.
