Kuda dan Jackal - Kisah Jataka
2
Once upon a time there was a royal horse that used to live in the place of
the king's palace. The horse was very dear to the king so the horse was
taken good care of and well fed.
There was a jackal who used to live in the neighborhood of the horse's
shed. He was very weak and skinny. He was always attracted by the smell
of the rich sweet rice being fed to the royal horse.
3
“What a royal food this horse has every day … lucky fellow!” The jackal thought.
One day the jackal could not resist the smell of the rice. He managed to sneak into
the horse's shed. He ate the sweet rice that fell from the horse's mouth. He liked the
rice so much that he started coming daily to eat the rice for days. The huge horse
did not notice the small jackal as he was busy enjoying his delicious food.
Gradually the jackal became bigger and stronger through eating the rich food.

The jackal came to be noticed by the horse. “Who are you little fellow?” the horse asked.
“I come from the nearby village. Every day I have been eating the leftover food of yours,” the
jackal replied.
“But how come I have not seen you till now?” the horse asked.
“Don't you know that jackals are very intelligent and that we are too brainy?”
The jackal smiled with his mouth wide open.
“Good joke,” the horse said.
The horse used to enjoy the company of the jackal and started sharing his food with him.
bertanya."Tidakkah anda tahu bahawa jackal sangat pintar?” Si jackal tersenyum dengan
mulut ternganga. "Lawak yang bagus," kata kuda itu. Kuda itu suka berteman dengan jackal
itu dan mula berkongsi makanan dengannya.
5
Both of them also started sharing time with each other and soon they became good friends. They ate
together, slept together and played together. They became such good friends. They hated to be separated.
Then one day a man saw the jackal. He asked the horse keeper,
“Why do you encourage a jackal inside the king's stable?”
“I did not notice him till now. What shall I do?” the horse keeper asked.
“Drive him away!” the man replied.
The horse keeper agreed. So the man drove the jackal away to his village and tied him up.
bertanya. “Halau dia!” lelaki itu menjawab. Penjaga kuda itu bersetuju. Maka lelaki itu menghalau
jackal itu ke kampungnya dan mengikatnya.
6
The king's horse became very sad after this happening. He missed his friend a lot. He didn't
want to do anything without his dear friend. He stopped eating and drinking. Finally the horse
keeper reported this to the king. However he didn't tell anything about the jackal.
The worried king consulted his wise minister who was known for his understanding of animals.
“Go to the horse shed and find out the reason for the horse's condition,”
the king told the wise minister.
The minister went to the horse shed and found the horse very sad.
Kuda raja menjadi sangat sedih selepas ini berlaku. Dia sangat merindui kawannya itu. Dia
7
He examined the horse thoroughly and then said to the horse keeper,
“There is nothing wrong with this horse's health. Why does he look so sad?
I think this horse is grief-stricken, possibly due to the loss of a dear one.”
“Do you know if this horse shared a close friendship with anyone?” The minister asked
the horse keeper.
“No sir,” the horse keeper replied.
The minister said, “Don't lie. Tell me the truth. If the horse dies you will be punished.”
Kenapa dia kelihatan sangat sedih? Saya rasa kuda ini
sangat sedih, mungkin kerana kehilangan seorang kawan tersayang.”"Adakah anda tahu jika
penjaga kuda. “Tidak tuan,” jawab penjaga kuda itu. Menteri itu berkata, “Jangan berbohong.
Beritahu saya perkara sebenar. Jika kuda itu mati, kamu akan dihukum.”
8
Then the horse keeper explained, “There was a jackal who used to eat, sleep and
play with the horse. He has been taken by a stranger three days ago. I do not know
where the jackal is now.”
The minister went back to the king to report what he had found out.
“Your Majesty, in my opinion the royal horse is not sick but is lonesome without his
dear friend the jackal.”
9
The king said, “You're right. Friendship is one of the most wonderful things.
It's surprising how a horse became friendly with the jackal. That aside, do
you know where the jackal is?”
The minister replied, “The horse keeper has informed me that a stranger
took him away and that he does not know about his whereabouts.”
Raja berkata, “Engkau betul. Persahabatan adalah salah satu perkara yang
paling indah.Sungguh menghairankan bagaimana seekor kuda menjadi
keberadaannya."
10
The king asked, “How can we bring back my horse's friend and make him happy
again?”
The minister advised, “Your majesty, make a declaration that whoever has the jackal
that used to live at the royal horse's shed will be penalized.”
So the royal proclamation was made. When the man who took the jackal heard the
proclamation, he immediately turned the jackal loose.
When freed the jackal ran back as fast as he could to the horse's shed.
dihukum.”Maka perisytiharan diraja dibuat. Apabila orang yang mengambil jackal itu
mendengar pengisytiharan itu, dia segera melepaskan jackal itu. Apabila dibebaskan, jackal
11
The horse was so delighted to see the jackal that he made him sit on his back.
The jackal waved his small tail while the horse's eyes sparkled with happiness.
The king very happy to see the royal horse happy once again.
The king told his minister, “ You're really smart and wise.” He rewarded the great
minister for his wise ways.
Both the horse and the jackal lived happily thereafter.
