1. Evaluation
During this unit of work I decided to do Macro, and take photos of all the different things around the
school that resembled my title which was “Spectrum of Small Life” and what that title entailed which
to me were all the different things we take for granted each day. Such as: flowers, berries and
different insects and what role they play in the universe.
I had to do a lot of different research in this unit to make it so that I made the right choice in my
chosen topic. I looked at a few different artists but one really which peaked my interest in the
photographs she took. Her name was Heather Angel and has taken hundreds of photos and she is a
freelance photographer so she works for numerous different companies taking pictures they would
like her to take. These are some of her images I found which I found the most interesting.
There were a lot of high points and low points during my whole experience of this project, some of
the best were finding the numerous different spaces to take the pictures and deciding what I was
going to shoot because there was so much choice in my chosen field. (Macro) Some of the bad
points were when I wasn’t able to get the pictures I wanted and that was very frustrating when I had
an idea in my mind and I wasn’t able to complete that because I didn’t have the right lens, the
weather wasn’t good enough or something else was playing against me. I think all of my
photographs I decided to use for my exhibition were very good and had their own spin on my title I
decided to use (spectrum of small life) however some of the pictures I decided to use were quite
similar, such as these two:
Both of these images are very similar because
they both contain the same bug/animal/insect
(wasp) but one is dead and one is alive so I
wanted to fix it up a bit but unfortunately they
are both very similar however one does have a ladybird behind it so it
does change the setting a bit. To try and resolve this dilemma I decided to edit the photo with the
alive wasp inside of it by pixelating everything but the wasp but very faintly because I didn’t want
this to be to prominent because I didn’t want the viewership to come away from the wasp and how I
wanted that to stand out the most.
2. On the other hand I think that they work very well together about how one is full of life and one is
not, almost how one is showing the begging of a spectrum and one is showing the end of all the
small things almost that it is now part of the earth and it can rest, how the beginning and the end is
so close together.
I cropped all of photos because the original photos were very zoomed out do I wanted the attention
to go further in on the little details of the flower/wasp/berries so that it fits in more so with my
chosen title. (Spectrum of small life) Such as on the berry photo there were tiny bristles which you
couldn’t see on the zoomed out version so I zoomed it in and they were there:
1. Because of the bristles this is one of my best photos.
2. There are a few of the berries that are In focus and are
out which is exactly what I wanted because it then makes a little
more to look at.
3. The dull/same background really makes the vibrant
colours of the berries stand out.
4. Another thing I think is it adds perspective of my title
(Spectrum of Small Things) and I think that these tiny berries
really do seem amazing but they are hidden in plain sight away
from people.
All of my photos needed a “Macro” lens to be able to get the precise detail I wanted and I used a
Canon DSLR 1100D camera to take them especially with the wasp photo because it was moving from
one branch to the next so quickly I has to use the continuous shutter and the extreme zoomed in
lens from far away so not to spook it. I did not use a tripod as It takes a long time to set up and a few
of these photos were a spur of the moment thing so that I could just quickly capture it.
All the photos I took were around the school site and they were mostly all taken in the garden
section because that is where all the flowers are, however I found the wasp floating around by the
football pitch on one of the trees so even though I didn’t plan to have any photos taken there I
thought that even if I didn’t use it I should take it because it would be a very good photo.
This whole project did turn out how I planned apart from a few exceptions due to planning. I wasn’t
able to get the photos I planned to I improvised and chose something different but I think that it still
came out very good. I think if I were to do this differently I would take more time when planning and
think about feasible options rather than the first thing that popped into my mind because then
though they were feasible they weren’t practical unfortunately so I had to change them but I would
make sure they were doable next time around.
I have learned a few new skills about the actual settings of the camera about how to have complete
control over some of the manual setting to get the clearest macro photos and to use different lenses
and how they work. To be able to do all of that I think was very fun and interesting and thought me
numerous different skills as a photographer.
3. I did a lot of the things I did based on my title (Spectrum of Small Life) because I thought that if I
could get a good title that fits with my genre well then the title would very easily be able to base my
whole project on that because I thought that it would be easier to do that. Also it would give me a
slightly smaller area to focus on because Macro has a lot of different areas to focus on such as
different insects and things such as that like flowers etc. so I wanted to do a few of those area but
not do too much as it would be too much work before my deadlines had to be met.
