4. The embryo development
When a woman becomes pregnant her
menstruation disappears until after the
baby is born. Pregnancy lasts about 9
months and ends in the labour.
5. During the first stages of the pregnancy the embryo
develops. Besides, different structures are created to
protect and provide foods to him. These structures are:
• The placenta. It is inside the womb, where the
implantation happens. The placenta takes nutrients and
oxygen from the mother’s blood to the embryo.
• The umbilical cord. It is made up of blood vessels that
connect the embryo to the placenta.
• The amniotic sac. It is a fluid filled sac that protects the
embryo.

6. Fetal development
During the first stages of the pregnancy the organs
of the future baby are formed and during the
last stages the fetus grows.
• After three months the embryo has all its
organs. From now it is called fetus.
• After 5 months the mother can feel the fetus
movement and it is possible to know the sex of
the baby by ultrasound.
• After 9 months the baby is ready to be born. It
weighs around 3 kilos and measures around 50
cm. Preemies are born before 9 months and
they need special cares.
8. The fetus feeding and health depend on his
mother’s. It is very important that mothers
have healthy habits during the pregnancy.
9. Labour
Labour is the process of giving birth. It usually
happens after nine months of pregnancy.
The placenta and the umbilical cord leaves
with the baby.
10. Labour takes places in three phases:
• Dilation: the womb begins to dilate for the
baby to come out by means of rhythmic
contractions.
• Expulsion: the baby is born through the
vagina, which also dilates. The umbilical cord
is cut and its scar is the navel.
• After birth: the placenta comes out of the
mother’s body.
12. If there is a problem, a cesarean is performed,
which is a medical surgery to take the baby out
of the mother’s belly.
