5. Elements of a Socratic
Seminar
• The Text- richness in ideas, issues, values, controversy and the ability to
generate conversation
• The Questions- OPEN-ENDED! Free of judgement
• The Leader- facilitator/leader and participant but no lectures
• The Participants (YOU)- read the text closely. Be an active listener. Make eye
contact with those are talking. You do NOT have to raise your hand to talk
but do not interrupt
