This document provides a 10-step process for analyzing a print document. It instructs the reader to describe the text, identify the author and point of view, determine the purpose, understand the context of when it was written, paraphrase the content, note anything unique or surprising, ask an open-ended question, consider the values of the author or audience, and write a comment. Following these steps allows for close examination of a print document.

1. Describe the text (title, date, layout).
2. Who is the author?
3. What is the P.O.V.? How can the P.O.V. affect the
message?
4. What is the purpose? What words helped indicate the
purpose?
5. What was happening at the time?
6. Paraphrase it!
7. What is unique or surprising?
8. Write an open-ended question to the author.
9. What can be learned about the values of the author or
audience?
10. Write a comment.
