Fishbowl Discussion
Overview:
Because you seem like an intelligent, thoughtful group, I am handing over a large portion of our
Fahrenheit 451discussions to you. For the most part, you will be in charge of what you want to discuss
and how you want to discuss it. Each day, we will have an inner circle composed of 4-5 leaders, 5
discussers and 2 hot seats. We also have an outer circle of people writing down their own responses and
reflections. People in this outer circle will have the option of jumping in the discussion as well. Leaders
and discussers will know which chapters they are assigned to in advance. Each student can earn up to 10
daily points; presenters can earn up to 40 points on the day of their presentation.
THE INNER CIRCLE
Expectations for Leaders:
1. Meet ahead of time to prepare a typed syllabus for your assigned chapter. This means that you
will need to read your assigned chapter ahead of time. Your syllabus should include a detailed
summary and around 12-20 thought-provoking discussion questions on the assigned reading.
Your questions should be organized by topic. (See example)
2. You will facilitate the discussion. This means that you will pose the questions, ask people to turn
to certain pages in the book, move discussers on to the next question when it seems time to move
on, ask people to explain themselves if they’re being too general, and generally take on a
leadership role. You may also be a discusser; you don’t have to stick to questions only. All
presenters must participate.
3. You will be graded on your preparation, analysis, participation, facilitation, and leadership. You
will receive 10 daily points for participation, as well as 30 points for your syllabus.
Expectations for Discussers:
1. You should read your assigned chapter carefully, writing down comments in the margins of your
book to help you feel prepared for the discussion. You do NOT need to turn in a syllabus or meet
with the other discussers in your group ahead of time.
2. You must sit in the inner circle throughout the entire discussion and provide thoughtful input,
questions, and commentary. You will receive your 10 daily points by participating insightfully at
least 5 times.
3. Please see the scoring chart if you’re not sure what I mean by “insightful.”
THE OUTER CIRCLE
Expectations:
1. The rest of the class will sit in the outer circle. You may receive your 10 daily points by writing a
one-page reflection during the fishbowl discussion. In your daily writing you will recap the
major points of the discussion, but more importantly, you will explain to what extent you agree or
disagree with certain comments and why.
2. If you do not wish to sit and write, you can jump into one of the two hot seats. If you make 5
comments, you do not need to perform a daily writing. If you make 1-4 comments, you can
shorten your daily writing.
3. Please do not hog the hot seats; you will lose points this way. Instead, get out of the hot seat when
you’re finished with your comment to let someone else take your place. If you’re waiting to get
into a hot seat, you can tap one of the people in the hot seats and they will have to give up their
seat to you.
Expectations for the teacher:
1. I will be scoring the discussion and taking notes on your comments. I will refrain entirely from
jumping into your discussion. If things start to get out of hand, it is up to the leaders to bring the
discussion back under control. I am not a part of the inner circle.
2. However, you can’t get rid of me entirely. I love this book, and I demand to have 10 minutes at
the end of class to recap the discussion and touch on any ideas or issues that have not yet been
addressed.
Discussion Scoring Chart:
How to Earn Points During Discussion
• Taking a position on a question
• Making a relevant comment
• Making a comparison
• Recognizing contradictions
• Backing up an opinion with supporting evidence or factual info.
• Asking a clarifying question or moving the discussion along
How to Lose Points During a Discussion
• Not paying attention or distracting others
• Interrupting
• Making entirely irrelevant comments
• Monopolizing (hogging) the conversation
• Making a personal attack (ad hominem, anyone?)
Reminder: Simply saying, “I agree with…” will not earn you points. You’re welcome to agree and
disagree with your classmates, but you need to back up your comment with your own thoughts/evidence
from the text.
