MASS COMMUNICATION
What is the Internet?
(New Oxford American Dictionary (3rd), 2016, p. 914)
It’s popular! In 2015, the number of internet users worldwide was 3.17 billion (Global number of internet users, 2016).PROBABLY
considered as “human basic needs”
Internet as my medium choice
IT’s knowledgeable! It contains millions of knowledgeable resources
IT’S UNITY! TV, radios, magazines, books, NEWSPAPERs basically everything is just in there
It’s effective! It is very easy and fast to use, and is the only medium I know how to use properly.
It’s useful! Not only being used for entertaining purpose, as a student it is also useful for educational purpose. E.g. School work, online degree, etc.
Evolution of the internet
(Zimmermann 2012)
Why Internet is so important?
ENTERTAINMENT music, movie, TV, documentary or anything entertaining can all be found in the net. It offers greater variety of choice compared to TV cable.
EDUCATION there is a great number of educational websites providing free tutoring, lessons and useful resources for study and research. Plus, more and more universities offer an online course.
COMUNICATION Internet features social networking sites like Facebook, twitter, or skype to connect people around the world, which changes the way of communicating to be much easier, faster and cheaper compared to telephone.
Information newspaper, radio, newspaper, encyclopedia are all in available in the net. It is very easy to access anytime 24/7 either by a click of computer or a touch of mobile screen.
E-commerce internet offers a great number of online shopping sites like eBay, or amazon. More and more brands focus more on online platform to sell their products like H&M, McDonald's, etc. Also, Flights, hotels and trips can be bought online as well. Therefore people don’t need to go out for shopping anymore.
How the significance of the internet has changed over time and what other factors influenced its significance?
Personally, I believe the Internet has changed incredibly fast over time. Nowadays, almost 3.7 billion people around the world access to the Internet and most of them tend to rely on the Internet (Global number of internet users, 2016), there is no doubt that there are always new technologies develop everyday according to its growth, for example mobile apps, etc. which means, the Internet is not limited anymore like before. To support this, Dominick (2012) added that all traditional mass media content will be eventually contribute to the Net.
As the fast growing trend of the Internet, every one minute there are 571 websites created, 2 million Facebook shares, 68,00 blog posts and 278,000 Tweets (Ever wonder how many websites are created every minutes?, 2014). The figures show that the Internet has rapidly developed everyday and become more and more significant in order to meet human needs. By that reason, the main factor influenced the significance and change o.

that reason, the main factor influenced the significance and
change of the Net could be nothing but its million users on the
cyberspace.
4. And how the evolution of the Internet affects the way you
experience that media today in your career, in your community,
and daily routine?
The evolution of the Internet simply makes my life much easier.
Before, when I woke up, newspaper and TV were the only
options I used to read the news and gain information but now
since the Internet is included all the traditional media, I can not
only easily catch the news but also keep my self up-to-date
anytime through a PC or phone applications
In my routine: I also use the Net to do online shopping, listen to
music, book hotels and flights, study online, pay my bills. Well,
pretty much everything.
Community: Thanks to social networking sites like Facebook, it
allows me to interact with my friends and family. Also, a great
chatting mobile app like Skype and WhatsApp, helps me to keep
in touch with my friends from all over the world as well with a
very little cost compared to telephone.
Career: In hospitality, the most common communication channel
is e-mail. It is very fast and easy compared to letter. Most
hotels only accept Resume via e-mail. Besides, since LinkedIn
was created, I used it a lot to not only having my CV visible
online to companies, but also finding job, creating a connection
and more.

I have choseen the internet as my medium to study because I

on developing over the next decades. Moreover, William H.
Dutton (2013, p. 224) states that internet has expended
considerably over the last decade, howerver, this growth was
unequally spread through the world. Consequently, a great
future is waiting the Internet. Understanding it and its potential
effect on the mass communication would be of great interest.
Another reason is simply that nowadays, Internet is a integral

Application of Concepts
· Slide or Web page #1 explains the chosen medium and
provides a thorough rationale.
· Slide or Web page #2 analyzes the evolution of the chosen
medium.
17. · Slide or Web page #3 evaluates the significance of the chosen
medium.
· Slide or Web page #4 analyzes how the evolution of the
chosen medium affects media experiences.
· Slide or Web page #5 identifies 5 notable people related to the
chosen medium.
Instructor Comments:
Slide 1:
You did a great job choosing a topic and have a well thought
out reason why.
Slide 2:
You had a great start to showing how your medium has changed
over time. Make sure your timeline shows the progression of
your medium from conception to current day. Add in the more
recent information as well.
Slide 3:
You did not address the questions here. Make sure that you are
answering them specifically. First you need to tell us if you
think that your medium in general is significant to the general
public and why. You need to back this up with your research.
Second you need to tell us how the significance has changed
over time. This requires you to talk about your medium’s
significance in the past and compare it to now. This too has to
be backed up by your research. Finally you need to tell us what
has led to the change in significance. This should also be
backed up by your research. You need to make the actual
statements and then back them up. You can use some of your
ideas as support for what has brought about some of the change
18. in significance and the current significance. Just make sure you
answer the questions.
Slide 4:
You told us how this medium affects the general population and
their experience with it in different aspects of their lives.
However, this was to be specific to you and your own life.
Thus you need to tell us instead how you interact with this
medium in different aspects of your life.
Slide 5:
You did a good job identifying 5 notable people in the evolution
of your media choice. Make sure you can explain and source
each one’s contribution for week 5.

Social Media
Social media use and application has grown tremendously in the
recent past.
The way people communicate and share data and information
has changed since the introduction of social media (Kaplan &
Haenlein, 2010).
In this presentation, we will discuss social media due to its
dynamic nature, application of technology and its impact on the
globe in general.
Social media has changed not only people but also business
entities.
Research by Pew Research center found out that 65% of
American adults used social media on a daily basis in 2015
(Perrin, 2015). The statistic should have changed by now.
Social Media Evolution
There existed social media way back in the 70s however what
has been reported and well documented as the earliest social
media platform is a site created in 1997 (Kietzmann et al.,
2011).
20. The site was known as Six Degrees and existed up to 2001. The
site allowed users to create a profile and become friends with
other members, some who even did not have a pattern.
The explosion of social media happened in the early 2000s.
Wikipedia was the first to be discovered in 2001.
Wikipedia replaced by Friendster, Myspace, Facebook in 2004
and Twitter in 2006. After this, the industry opened up, and now
there are many more modern platforms like WhatsApp,
Telegram, Snapchat, Instagram, Quora among others.
Significance of Social Media
The usage and demand for Social Media have been increasing
with every day passing.
What began as just a new way of communication has now
become an industry in itself.
Nowadays social media has been used for not only social
communication but for also business, politics and formal
discussion as well (Van, 2013).
Social media has changed the operations of almost all industries
due to its versatile and dynamic nature.
This change looks unstoppable, and one can only wait to see the
next changes that the world will experience on this front.
Effects of the Evolution
With time the usage of Social Media has helped in perfecting it.
Nowadays it is easier to access social media as the websites,
and the applications are easy to access.
Social media is now even available over the phone which was
not the case in the recent past.
The increased use of social media has also led to several
challenges including identity theft (Van, 2013). That has led to
rising in more security measures by the social media providers.
