Bags
Background
 When we buy food or anything, a lot of packaging is used.
 Landfills are filling up, and new ones are opening up.
 Not every one wants landfills nearby (NIMBY).
 E.g. Efforts to have a landfill near Danford Lake were stopped by locals.
 Provinces and states are stopping the flow of garbage across borders, so
Quebec must deal with its own waste.
 Producing less garbage will decrease our Ecological Footprint.

Purpose
 To raise awareness among young consumers of the issues surrounding specific
types of consumer packaging:
 Plastic – e.g. plastic bags
 Paper (as part of Wood/Wood ByProducts) – e.g. cardboard cereal boxes
 Metal – e.g. soda pop cans
 Glass (as part of the Ceramic group) – e.g. glass pickle jars
 Composite (combinations of the above categories) – e.g. juice boxes
 The method to raise awareness will be the production of Eco-Friendly Hand Bags (EFHB)
that involve the use of reused materials.
Ecological Footprint
 Ecological Footprint is a measure of the amount of resources needed per
person for the purposes of:
 Land needed for habitation
 Living, Eating, Drinking, Products, Transportation, Job
 Waste Disposal
Packaging Facts
Attitudes about Packaging Challenges about Packaging
Easy Produces lots of garbage
Throw away society – no worries Recycling takes time, energy
Prolongs food life Costs money
Sanitary Alternatives take time, money
A lot of packaging goes to landfill
Must everything be wrapped up?
The 3/4/5 Rs
 Originally the 3Rs of Recycling were:
 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
 Over the years the following have been added
 Rethinking – deciding on if we really need a purchase depending on its packaging;
 Refusing – to buy things, refusing to the culture of mass material consumption;
 Rotting – the use of composters for vegetable material or digesters for all food
materials;
Method
 In groups of 2 or 3 that YOU decide, you will work at home and create an Eco-
Friendly HandBag.
 You will each complete an information booklet;
 The EFHB will incorporate used material; you cannot buy a new bag;
 It can incorporate new material used in a novel way;
 If possible, the EFHB may be made of the material type you chose;
 You must incorporate 5 questions and 5 relevant information statements in/on
your bag.
 You may also use a Kahoot;
 There will be a test on this, based on the information in your
notes/text/information booklet.
