When we buy food or anything, a lot of packaging is used.
Landfills are filling up, and new ones are opening up.
Not every one wants landfills nearby (NIMBY).
E.g. Efforts to have a landfill near Danford Lake were stopped by locals.
Provinces and states are stopping the flow of garbage across borders, so
Quebec must deal with its own waste.
Producing less garbage will decrease our Ecological Footprint.

4. Purpose
To raise awareness among young consumers of the issues surrounding specific
types of consumer packaging:
Plastic – e.g. plastic bags
Paper (as part of Wood/Wood ByProducts) – e.g. cardboard cereal boxes
Metal – e.g. soda pop cans
Glass (as part of the Ceramic group) – e.g. glass pickle jars
Composite (combinations of the above categories) – e.g. juice boxes
The method to raise awareness will be the production of Eco-Friendly Hand Bags (EFHB)
that involve the use of reused materials.
5. Ecological Footprint
Ecological Footprint is a measure of the amount of resources needed per
person for the purposes of:
Land needed for habitation
Living, Eating, Drinking, Products, Transportation, Job
Waste Disposal

9. The 3/4/5 Rs
Originally the 3Rs of Recycling were:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Over the years the following have been added
Rethinking – deciding on if we really need a purchase depending on its packaging;
Refusing – to buy things, refusing to the culture of mass material consumption;
Rotting – the use of composters for vegetable material or digesters for all food
materials;
10. Method
In groups of 2 or 3 that YOU decide, you will work at home and create an Eco-
Friendly HandBag.
You will each complete an information booklet;
The EFHB will incorporate used material; you cannot buy a new bag;
It can incorporate new material used in a novel way;
If possible, the EFHB may be made of the material type you chose;
You must incorporate 5 questions and 5 relevant information statements in/on
your bag.
You may also use a Kahoot;
There will be a test on this, based on the information in your
notes/text/information booklet.
