NATURAL SCIENCES: LIFE & LIVING
Grade 6
2 weeks
Compiled by MR MONDLANE.J
Different ecosystems
• an ecosystem is an area where living and non-
living things depend on each other in many
different ways
• there are many different ecosystems such as
rivers, mountains, sea, rocky shore, ponds,
wetlands, grasslands, forests and deserts,
which support different kinds of living things
Mountain ecosystem
Mountain ecosystems
Mountain ecosystems are
usually cold and windy.
The plants are often small at
the top of the mountain.
Many plants and animals,
such as grasses, dassies,
baboons and porcupines live
on mountain slopes.
Sea ecosystem
Sea ecosystems
Animals and plants that live in
the sea ecosystem live in salty
water and most live where they
can get heat and light from the
sun.
Fish, turtles, dolphins and
different types of seaweed live
in sea ecosystems
ROCKY SHORE ECOSYSTEM
Rocky shore systems are
found where rocks occur on
the shoreline.
The rocky shore is covered
by salt water for some time.
Mussels , barnacles, crabs,
fish and seaweed living on
rocky shores are suited to
this.
Grassland ecosystem
Grasslands have large open spaces with
plenty of sunlight.
They are hot in summer and cold in
winter.
They have enough rain for grasses to
grow, but not trees.
Grassland plants are mainly grasses and
small bushes.
Some animals are zebras, rhinos,
giraffes and impalas
Human activities like poaching animals ,
making fires and clearing land for housing
and farming, all threaten the survival of
grassland ecosystems
Forest ecosystem
Forest ecosystems are shady and
cool, with little bright sunlight.
They have plenty of water and
can be damp.
Forest ecosystem has many
different trees. Other plants, such as
ferns, mosses and small flowering
plants , grow in forests.
Animals, such as buck, wildcats,
mice, snackers, birds and insects,
live in forests. Threats to forest
ecosystems are chopping down
trees for timber and clearing ground
for road a and farming.
River ecosystem
Rivers are freshwater systems that
flow through land and end at the sea.
Rivers usually have bright sunlight,
but can have shady banks.
The temperature of river ecosystems
can be warm or cold, depending on
where the river is.
Plants in river ecosystem include
pondweed and reeds in the water, small
plants and trees along the banks
Animals found in river ecosystems
include fish, frogs, insects and birds.
Wetland ecosystem
Wetlands are areas where
the soil is wet most of the
time
River pond and wetland
ecosystem have fresh water is
flowing or that is still.
Plants that can grow in or
near the water are lilies and
reeds.
Animals like crocodiles,
frogs, fish, snails, birds and
crabs live in or near the
water.

Different ecosystem
1. Drawing and writing about three plants and
three animals that are found there
Living and non-living things in
ecosystems
• In an ecosystem there are certain relationships
between living things (plants, animals/people,
microorganisms), and non-living things (air,
water, sunlight, soil) in a particular area*
Living Non- living
