Main and Ancillary Media Texts
The prior two slides highlight the similarities between the
trailer, the poster and the magazine cover. All three media
texts share similarities such as colour schemes, dimness of
lighting and aspects of characters included. The most
prevalent character within all these texts would be the
villain character “Her”.
Although she is the most present in the texts, her identity is
still a mystery until viewers watch the main product- the
trailer. This was done with great purpose as in effect,
audiences are intrigued by this element of mystery and
instead of simply moving their attention off the film media
products, they would want to find out more about the plot .
The Trailer
The trailer- the main text, featured the majority of the plot and storyline
yet still managed to keep audiences wanting more after the
premiere. One viewer remarked “I would pay good money to watch
the rest” as it was suspenseful and thrilling to her. In regards to the
trailer in comparison to the poster, the aspect of intrusion was
particularly relevant.
The poster depicts an image of the villain knocking the door of the main
character “Alex”; this is a very significant scene within in the trailer as
it marks the disruption of equilibrium and the character “Tiffany”,
becomes possessed. With regards to the magazine, the villain is also
present with aspects of mise-en-scene such as Christmas lights which
reinforce the themes of Christmas. This feature was reinforces in the
trailer similarly with aspects of mise-en-scene such as tinsel and
Christmas decorations alongside the a festive soundtrack.
The Poster and The Magazine Cover
The poster and magazine both shared similar feature colour such
as black and red which are conventional within the horror
genre. However, the magazine included a feature colour of
green to reinforce the theme of Christmas which is very
relevant within the trailer. Moreover, there are graphics
present on the magazine which withdraw connotations of
themes of Christmas; this include a small graphic of holly on
the sticker feature. The poster itself is very dimly lit and it
mirrors aspects of the trailer from beyond the point of the
disruption stage of equilibrium which in turn makes the two
texts very effective.
