Annotated Bibliography On Unbowed A Memoir
Tuesday October 7th 2014 Shaneik Smith Professor Williams Writ 101 Wangari Bibliography Maathai, Wangari. Unbowed: A Memoir. New York,
Random House, 2006. Print. In this Memoir Wangari explains all of the trials and tribulations she has went through to get where she was today. She
has endured derision, death threats, imprisonment and beatings which is usual for woman of color. However, it was unusual because she was fighting
her sisters and a better environment. Maathai was internationally acknowledged for her struggle for democracy, human rights, and environmental
conservation, and served on the board of many organizations. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. But what
amazes me about Wangari is that she is the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the prize, which is her lifelong refusal to be defined
by anyone or anything other than herself. She won the noble peace prize in 2004 for "her contribution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Challenge for Africa. New York, Random House, 2009. Print. Maathai believes there is much more to Africa than what is gleaned in a
headline. The headline often provides information of poverty and debt in Africa as well as disease; which some has no context. In Maathai's 35
years of experience, at all levels of society, she understands the context of those headlines in the media. In her book, The Challenge For Africa, she
writes about her plan to tackle the many trials Africa faces. She knows the troubles are "severe and wide–ranging," but sees realistic options for
change. She became motivated with the situations at hand to create a source of organization to help her solve the problems. Wangari was determined
to make her country a better for her people as well as herself. She deftly describes what Africans can and need to do for themselves, stressing all the
while responsibility and accountability. Impassioned and empathetic, The Challenge for Africa is a book of immense

Kenyan People Do To Save The Environment
Save the wildlife! Save the environment! The environment and livestock in Kenya are decreasing rapidly. People in Kenya are cutting down trees to
plant coffee beans to sell to other countries, and the livestock is decreasing due to the populations of lions. Later on, they found an invention that will
help livestock be safe at night. The Kenyan people and their government are making significant changes to help protect the environment and the
animals. Kenya is a country east of Africa with a population with about 45 million people living in it today. The capital of the city is Nairobi it is a
popular city known for its national wildlife park. In an article called, "A Kenyan Teen's Discovery: Let There Be Lights to Save the Lions" written by
Nina Gregory, the author states, "Through many efforts have been made to protect the Lions in the area, when the lions kill the local livestock some
residents respond by killing the big cats." At night Lions would come poke ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an article called, "Growing Trees for Kenya by Elizabeth Cregan, the author mentions "Wangari Maathai went off to a college in Mount St.

that people can plant coffee beans to sell to other countries. Dr. Wangari is going to try to change that by planting trees to fill the land. "Since the
trees take 3 to 4 years to mature they thought of planting seeds was the best way of providing villagers with firewood for cooking and fruit to sell
and eat. Village woman could feed their children and earn small amounts of money by raising seedlings". "On earth day 1977 Dr. Maathi and several
followers planted seven trees in her backyard and founded the Greenbelt movement the earth was naked she said". One day she asked the department
of forestry for 15 million seeds and they

Xl Keystone Pipeline Research Paper
XL Keystone Pipeline Research Paper "In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as
obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace (Nobel Peace Prize Medalist Maathai 2004)." A Canadian oil
company that goes by TransCanada hopes to build an oil pipeline that would extend an enormous 1,200 miles onto an already gargantuan 2,600 mile
long pipeline. Keystone XL represents just under a third of the entire Keystone project, and every other piece of pipe has been built and laid out. In
fact, TransCanada 's pipeline system is already shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands across the U.S.
border –– and into Illinois (Diamond). The current proposal would take the pipeline on a journey all the way through to Texas. Extracting crude oil
from oil sands would be enormously problematic for the environment as it causes the pumping of about 17% more greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere than standard crude oil extraction. Tar sand oil has levels of carbon dioxide emissions that are three to four times higher than those of
conventional oil, due to more energy–intensive removal and refining processes (Friends of the Earth). The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline
would stimulate employment, the effects would be temporary and the whole scheme would produce a negative long term outcome. The construction of
the Keystone XL pipeline has caused

She Persisted: An Analysis Of Girl Empowerment
Introduction:
We live in a society where we are constantly being told how to behave, look, and think a certain way because of our gender. These messages are
found in the media we consume daily, ranging from advertisements, billboards, movies, magazines and even children's books. They are also found in
daily interactions, such as borderwork or in norms that "involve rewards and punishments" (Clark–IbaГ±ez., Marisol Lecture 14 Mar.). Socialization,
the traditional theory of children in sociology, is described as "the process by which children adapt to and internalize society" (Clark–IbaГ±ez., Marisol
Lecture, 14 Feb.). The topic of this research is girl empowerment because I believe it's important that young girls read encouraging narratives at an
early age. "Children's pre–school books are an important cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I was analyzing the children's books, I noticed that several main characters were from a variety of ethnicities such as African American,
Mexican, or White. The book, She Persisted, was the only book that contained a variety of ethnicities. But in Olivia, it was difficult to assume the
race of the character because she was a pig. Other books like in I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark mention the extra hurdles that the
character had to jump over because of her Jewish background. It's crucial to hear these success stories where the protagonist triumphs in the end
although they experience sexism and racism on their road to success. Across the ten children's books, there was a mixture of social classes as well. I
found this important because it creates another pathway in which the reader can connect with the protagonist. Young girls from a lower social class, are
often more discouraged, because of their economic status, but protagonist like Wangari or Elena, can give them hope that they too can achieve great

Essay On Pursuing A Doctoral Program

I have always wanted to pursue a doctoral program but never had the financial resources. Hence, I researched and found this doctoral program offered
by The Swiss Management Center University (SMC) which is a high quality multifaceted online education program which is accredited by Accredited
Council of Business Schools Program (ACBSP). Furthermore, it is affordable, flexible very informative and relevant in both academic and business
sectors. (SMC, n.d.).
Several people influenced my decision to pursue a doctorate degree at different levels. First, Dr. Wangari Maathai who was the first Kenyan Woman to

Although learning new concepts is sometimes difficult, I am determined to eliminate counterproductive and redundant methods of doing my studies. At
the same time, it is necessary that I maintain effective communication methods which will include both written and oral communications. Besides, it is
also necessary that I acknowledge that failure is also an important learning process which is a part of the double–loop learning method (Argyris, 1991).
This is extensively elaborated in the article Teaching Research Methods for Doctoral Students in Education talks about teaching doctoral students
research methods that they could apply in their field. When doctoral students first enrolled, their aim was to do well academically. However, as time
progressed, the students become interested in the multidisciplinary research methodologies process. Furthermore, they learned different aspects such as
effective data collection through the interview, exploring documented work such as syllabus and historical documentation through reading past

In Mike Keefe's cartoon he reveals the brutality of what happened it Sudan and how the UN could have done something to stop the massacre of the
Sudanese people. Even after a horrific genocide occurred The UN were still slow to connect the dots of what happened. The genocide was "spelt" out
right in front of the UN they still didn't see what happened. They could have jumped in and prevented the killing from happening but instead did not
come in till after the fact. The UN tried to ignore the fact of what was happening to avoid having to interfere with the ongoing genocide. Unless the
killing is happening in their own back yard they are slow to react.

The Field Of Environmental Science
The field of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates biology, ecology, and many others to the study of the environment and
the solutions to environmental problems. Because of the expansion of the human population and the ways in which we use our resources, it has
resulted in many problems such as climate change and ocean pollution. Many scientists and other various organizations are contributing to finding
solutions to the environmental problems. This paper describes the contributions made by Wangari Maathai and Rachel Carson to the field of

In September 1960, Mathaai was one of about three hundred fortunate students to win a scholarship. She was able to attend the Mount St. Scholastica
College in Kansas, where she was able to learn more about the environment by earning a bachelor 's degree in biology in 1964 and a Master's degree
two years later. She returned to Kenya to earn a Doctorates degree in veterinary medicine at the University if Nairobi. During her studies at the
university, Maathai and her female colleagues had to deal with gender discrimination. When they tried to change the unjust treatment, they were told by
the university officials that "you should just take the basic salary because the rest of the services that men get you don't need" (Maathai, 2006, p.115).
But they did not give up. Eventually, Maathai's work paid off because she became the first woman in East Africa to earn a Doctorates Degree. Her
experience with gender discrimination and her love for the environment enabled her to join organizations that advocated for women's rights as well as
environmental organizations. Through the various organizations and the scientific community, she found out about the deforestation of Kenya's forests
and the rural women's lack of resources. "As I sat listening to the women talk about water, energy, and nutrition, I could see that everything they lacked

Unbowed A Memoir Gender Roles
Throughout the post–independence era of Africa, gender roles and gender relations are changing. In a few countries in Africa, during the
post–independence period, there are women that want to break the traditions of male generated fields in the work and politics. The film Faat KinГЁ by
Ousmane SembГЁne, follows African woman Faat KinГЁ through her day to day struggles for success in work and family during the
post–independence era of Africa. Wangari Maathai's book Unbowed: A Memoir describes her childhood and accomplishments that she made in Kenya.
African American women around the world are overcoming the gender barriers in work forces that are commonly operated by men. In Ousmane
Sembene's movie Faat KinГЁ, we follow Faat KinГЁ's daily livelihood as she finds her place in the Senegalese economic market. KinГЁ is a
single mother, who was disowned by her father when she became pregnant with her first born Aby. Aby's father Mr. Gaye was KinГЁ's high school
teacher and love, who eventually betrayed and expelled her before she could take a test. Later on she was betrayed again by conman Boubakar

Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement
When it comes to leadership of women in the environment, Wangari Mathai is a good example. Wangari Maathai was a woman from Kenya who
saw the effects of deforestation, as well as the relationship it had with the rest of the environment, like topsoil runoff which leads to poor soil for
farming and poor water quality (Winright p. 270). Therefore, she started the Green Belt Movement which moved to plant more trees causing less
topsoil runoff which leads to more planting ground and cleaner water (Winright p. 270). By looking to better the world in which she had lived in
Wangari was able to express solidarity in what she did. Solidarity as stated in the text is" the ties in a society that bind people to one another so that
they are able to relate to and support people of different backgrounds", as well... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing this she also incorporated subsidarity. Subsidarity "is the principle of Catholic social teaching that explains how responsibility for upholding
the common good should be shared by individual people, local organizations, community groups, non–governmental organizations and various levels of
government" (Winright, p. 231). It is also important to note that subsidarity "holds that responsibility for the common good should be maintained
at the most local level possible" (Winright, p. 232). This was also a key aspect of Wangari's movement. She recognized that everyone had a
responsibility for the world that we live in and she also realized that by "empowering people to transform where they live is crucial, because then
they become invested in, and take ownership of the projects" (Winright, p. 271). Therefore, in order to get others involved she first started by
getting local women to help and become involved in her movement to better the land on which they lived. In many ways one person can make a
change and inspire others to do the same. Wangari Maathai is a wonderful example of how one person can see what we are doing to the world and

Reflective Essay On Unbowed By Wangari Maathai
As a person of color, it is hard to find television that I can easily identify with. There are not a lot of shows that I can identify with and I believe that
these shows are needed to promote growth of people of color in varying career fields. This disparity is because of societal norms that are profitable in
television, and the open acceptance of people of color being in either well off conditions or in the hip–hop industry. Representation is important in both
the job market and in media, because personal limitations are mostly drawn from the imagery that is the most acceptable. In a book titled "Unbowed",
a memoir written by the creator of the Green Belt movement Wangari Maathai, the author writes about her experiences with education in Kenya. After
the colonization of Kenya, there was a clear line drawn as to how far women could obtain an education. The author also states that there was a... Show

He questioned my amazement and told me something that I thought about for a while. He said that the students who did not finish school were either
not encouraged or could not see themselves in higher education because of the social culture we were raised in. After hearing this I thought about
shows such as "Love and Hip–hop Atlanta" and "Empire". These shows glorify the pursuit of careers that have a marginal opportunity of success,
rather than diversifying the opportunities that students of color can obtain. This scenario reminds me of the environment that was described in the
book "Unbowed." Before Wangari Maathai challenged her societal norms, the educational system in which she was raised in would have continually
deterred women from pursuing higher roles in education. Though shows such as "Love and Hip–hop Atlanta" and "Empire" marginalize the

streams vanishing. Wangaria likewise understood that the quicker the ecological degradation could be examined the faster the general public and

Wangari Maathai: The Concept Of Compassion
The concept of compassion is also significant in the works of Wangari Maathai in her discussion of environmental activism. Wangari Maathai was a
political and ecological activist who fought for democracy, human rights and the conservation of the environment. The role of compassion in Maathai's
work is relevant through empowering the community to value the environment they live in by reserving and protecting our resources.
For example: Maathai created the Green Belt Movement in her country because women had to travel a long way to get their food and water and
everything they needed to survive. It is a movement of peace and hope to help people understand why they have to maintain their communities clean

Unbowed By Wangari Maathai: Book Analysis
Gender oppression is one major issue that has been present in all countries at some point, with people fighting for equality in different ways and forms.
Wangari Maathai, a fighter against gender oppression and other environmental problems, told a truly amazing and stunning story in her autobiography
Unbowed. As her story unfolded, it was impressive to see how effectively she portrayed the fights against gender inequalities, and how she explained
the gender oppression she experienced in Kenya. Wangari Maathai's autobiography successfully confronts gender oppression in Kenya and allows for
change in this time by effectively using specific examples from her experiences to show how she handled beginning the fight against gender oppression
in a mature, determined, and courageous way. These qualities having been presented in her examples so effectively truly provides the inspiration for
others to also stand up to gender oppression. Throughout the autobiography, Wangari Maathai used an approach that expressed her maturity in relation
to gender oppression. Despite having to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She shows determination in multiple ways: in the ways she fights for the Green Belt Movement, when she fights for the environment, and especially
when she fights for the rights of women. In a peer–reviewed article, Florence Ebila says, "the postcolonial nation state went wrong in its interaction
with women politicians like her who chose to speak up against bad leadership" (Ebila, 145). Rather than really taking the time to understand where
she was coming from when she wrote letters, Maathai was often subjected to criticism because of her gender. For example, she spoke up against bad
leadership, to try to save Karura Forest; however, in response to the letter she wrote to the government about the forest, she was ignored due to her
gender (Maathai, 262). When she acted in trying to save the forest, she was almost attacked

Science And Rachel Carson Similarities
From the beginning of time, science has been an essential part of the creation and progression of civilization. Although many scientists and their work
are well known, such as that of Isaac Newton, female scientists are pushed into the shadows and discredited. Scientists such as Rachel Carson and
Professor Wangari Maathai are often forgotten, but have done incredible work that was essential to the survival of the planet. Despite focusing their
efforts in completely different regions of the world, both women had a major impact and had many similarities between them.
Although the scientists shared many similarities, their origins and childhoods were completely different. Rachel Carson grew up in a small town in
Pennsylvania, surrounded by nature and forests. Her mother, a school teacher, taught Carson lots of valuable lessons about the forests and its many
species, causing her to take a strong interest in animals. Carson also grew up during the second industrial revolutionary era, which caused her to see
the waste products of factories and the destruction that it caused. This also gave her a different perspective into the environmental world, because she
saw the changes all around her. Carson's childhood also shares some similarity to that of Maathai, who also grew up around nature.
Professor Wangari Maathai came from Nyeri, Kenya and was born many years after than Carson in 1940. Maathai group up in a very rural village
where farming and landscaping was very common. Maathai

that African communities face but provides thoughtful solutions on how to get African Countries back on the right track. In the first few chapters Dr.
Maathai ruminates over the environmental challenges that countries in Africa are up against. She talks about how droughts and floods affect countries
in both western and eastern Africa. She then discusses how Natural resources are still being extracted and exploited from Countries outside of Africa.

Wangari Maathai's Epilogue : Canopy Of Hope
In Wangari Maathai's "Epilogue: Canopy of Hope," she said, "the news hit me like a thunderbolt" (Maathai 291). She used this metaphor to express
her emotional state of how she feels when she heard the news about her Noble Peace Prize award. Usually, this happened to every human being, when
that person received something he or she is not expecting at that particular moment. For example, I could remember August 7, 1997, when I received a
scholarship award letter from the Ministry of Ghana Education Service. Stating that I am awarded a scholarship to attend Senior High school (SHS),
based on my educational performance as well as my incredible achievement on the Junior High school final examination. I was astonished and
could not believe that was meet for me, so I turned over the envelope to look at the address whether the letter was really for me. Behold, the
message was indeed addressed to me, immediately, tears started running down my cheeks as I read the letter over. I was astounded because my
parents were contemplating how to finance my SHS schooling when this surprising news came, so it was like some heavy burden have been taken off
my parent's shoulder. Finally, I will agree with Maathai, who said that "the news hit me like a thunderbolt," because I was shocked by the news like it
hit Maathai as "thunderbolt" (Maathai 291).
Maathai discussed that "my mind went back and forth over all the difficult years and great effort...futile struggle" (Maathai 292). Yes! The

Women 's Leadership For Women
We have great leader, especially are women leaders. They empower other people and embrace each other in a loving kind of way . The are some
good leaders. There is also some bad, but the good outways the bad. It's importance of women leaders . I think we have been wrong to some women
just because they are women. Women should have the same rights as men do. This is coming from a man, so women aren't they only ones wanting
rights for each other. The good leaders out there in the world are trying to make a change. Trying to make this world a better place. We should have
more women leaders in the world like this. They are leaders that want rights for each other. They are making a change for people everyday.
How are women good leader in this world. I think women have better work ethics to be leaders in their business. "It is that 6 out of 10 women want
to be a senior leader in their company"(KPMG research 2). That means 60% of women want to lead their company and be a great leader for the
company. As a leader "you have to teach others how to be leader." Statistics say women at a young age, we're taught how to be leaders."67% of women
reported they'd learned the most important lessons about leadership from other women"(KPMG Key findings 6). "The kpmg took 3,104 U.S. women

sought to identify how these women were socialized to leadership

The Components Of Adichie 's Speech
To vaguely review the components of Adichie's speech, she breaks down the important details
on how she is able to fully direct a social situation in a manner that is relatable to other women and
other genders not considered a "dominant" race. Adichie tells many different stories of social situations
that either she or others she knows have endured. Her emotional take on the problem has given her the
right to stand up and choose the path where most men would feel the need to ignore instead of
acknowledge the right for a woman to do so. To not only call herself and believe herself to be a feminist,
but to also push the meaning for non–feminists and children exposed to the logical to open up their eyes
and see that there truly is a problem with the male dominance epidemic.
Thesis Statement: According to Adichie's speech "We should all be feminists," she presses the
issue on how the equality of both races should have equal opportunities and that the text targets
everyone instead of one specific type of person. The entirety of the speech itself is to not only target
young women going through a social situation where there is injustice in gender, but to also focus on
the wrongdoings of the male race and how their point of view involving females and other genders can
affect the way we function on a daily basis. Especially in the working business, women tend to be
shunned out from the average working routine that men are raised to follow.

Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora Essay
Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora The Kenyan feminist and environmental activist, Wangari Maathai, explores the legacy of
colonialism and oppression in her native country through her moving 2006 memoir, Unbowed. Maathai explains that over the course of the nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries, Africa experienced a massive influx of white settlers. In an effort to solidify control over recently acquired colonies,
many European powers had encouraged large numbers of their ethnically white citizens to make a new home on the African continent. As a result,
thousands of native Africans were displaced. Maathai's ancestors, the Kikuyu and Maasai peoples were among them. The majority of these forced
dislocations took... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As time passed, European domination drastically altered the African landscape – both physically and culturally. Traditional roles, practices, and beliefs
were either completely subverted or modified to fall in line with European cultural ideals. Doubtlessly, this process of subjugation worked to the
detriment of native populations throughout the continent. Even though all members of indigenous communities have suffered under this system,
African women remain especially vulnerable to its harmful effects. As Mary Kolawole points out in her comprehensive work, Womanism and African
Consciousness, these women must confront a set of oppressions unique to their position as both black Africans and women. During her discussion of
African women's current struggle for recognition, Kolawole argues that, although colonialism displaced many African traditions, the patriarchal social
structure remained. In many ways, she holds, European colonization widened the rift between African men and women even further (Kolawole 34).
Although African and European traditions share in the elevation of the male over the female, most African cultures offered women a greater position
of respect within society, as well as more "positive avenues of self–liberation" than were available to European women

What Is Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai, the heroine of this documentary, fought for over 30 years to save the environment of Kenya and protect the rights of its people by
teaching them to have the courage to live by their traditional cultural values.
Kenya has a landscape predominant with mountains, rivers, and a plethora of vegetation that is attributable to its location near the equator. The
ecosystem presented in our film is abundant with native trees, waters, tadpoles, bushes, and grasslands. Growing population and imperialism has led to
the dissipation of river water levels, a decrease in tree and frog populations, which has had a domino effect on the food chain.

It is amazing that the natives of those lands didn't even think that trees could grow in those open fields. Some thought that they would need an
academic degree to plant trees.
Along with Wangari, many other environmentalists, and human rights activists put their lives in danger to fight save their environment. Wangari had
the courage to fight the government, which unfortunately was supporting the destruction of the forests, and also the tenacity to be a leader of her
people in times of crisis. Her voice was heard and carried a positive message in the face of governmental threats and societal fear, which ultimately
changed history and brought nature close to men by reuniting the trees with their brothers, the people of Kenya.
The traditions of the Kenyan people are deeply rooted and related almost entirely to their lands. They become one with the land from birth to death.
Therefore respecting nature is same as respecting one's self. By protecting their natural resources, they learn to protect and defend themselves.

Review Of Wangari Maathai's Replenishing The Earth
"If you destroy the forest then the river will stop flowing, the rains will become irregular, the crops will fail and you will die of hunger and starvation."
Wangari Maathai
It is so natural, in our current world, to feel disengaged from the physical earth. In spite of desperate notices and heightening worry over the condition
of our planet, many individuals became in touch with the normal world. Wangari Maathai invested decades of working with the Green Belt Movement
to help ladies in provincial Kenya plant and maintain many trees. With their hands in the soil, these ladies frequently got themselves engaged and "at
home" in a way they never did. Maathai wanted to confer that inclination to everybody, and trusts that the key lies in conventional qualities such as
adore for the earth, self–improvement, appreciation and regard, and a pledge to benefit. Maathai wanted to create a value–driven society of people who
consciously work for continued improvement of their livelihoods and a greener, cleaner world; to strive for better environmental management,
community empowerment, and livelihood improvement using tree–planting as an entry point.

Security Is Not Only Survival, But Living Without Fear
Security is not only survival, but living without fear" (Diskaya 2013). These words are essential in understanding that the answer to dissecting
security lay in the balance of varying schools of thought. This analysis aims to examine whom security is for, rather whom are we securing, be it the
state or the individual. I will argue, going forward that there is no clear–cut answer to this question, for security must exhibit factors of each school of
thought in order to adequately ensure annihilation of global insecurity. Analyzing the works of scholars such as Barry Buzan, Ken Booth, and groups
such as the Copenhagen School will offer a broader understanding of security and what it truly means to be secure. There are five sectors in which ...

Furthermore, without examining threats to these individuals one cannot adequately examine the root causes of larger scale global insecurities. For
scholars like Ken Booth, the sovereign state is not the main provider of security, rather one of the main causes of individual insecurity. Booth states that
their own governments rather than foreign armies have killed far more people (Booth 2007). Traditional security policies effectively conceal some of
the most fundamental human needs when merely focusing on security in terms of aspirations to achieve national interests, thus failing to protect the
individuals that make up the state (Stone 2009). As Booth describes it people and groups can only achieve true security if they do not deprive others
of it (Booth 2007). It is not my intention nor do I perceive it the intention of others to eliminate the ideals of traditional security all together, rather it is
my aim to reveal this non traditional approach in combination with the all familiar state centric ideology of the realist and neorealist minds. In order to
examine how and why individual and human security is essential to adequately attempting a global sense of safety, I have collected a myriad of
statistics that assist in illustrating the international need for, as Scott Watson describes, humanitarianism as securitization (Watson 2011). Data

We Should All Be Feminist
Feminism is a topic often overseen by many because it can be deemed as "weak" or even "hateful" to those who encounter the word. This is
slightly expected because of the frequent negative association linked to practicing feminism or being a feminist. Another major reason is because
feminism is not explored as much as it deserves to be, before any serious judgements are made. In We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda
Ngozi Adichie, being a feminist is explained and supported through Adichie's her own personal experiences as well as observations made and noted.
Being a feminist is not an easy thing to be, Adichie recognizes this as early on as pages 8 and 9 when she explains how her friend called her a
feminist and that she could tell it definitely

Wangari Maathai Research Paper
How can anyone preserve the Earth? Many people inculcate others on the influences of cutting down trees or littering, but not many of them explicate
how to stop the world from dying. Sure, not littering is advantageous, but it doesn't obligatorily plant a tree. With so much pollution, it seems virtually
infeasible. But not for this woman. Wangari Maathai was the first woman in East Africa to earn a doctorate degree. With her organization, The Green
Belt Movement, a myriad of trees were planted. This slideshow elaborates on Wangari Maathai's influence on people and the world.
Wangari Maathai truly cared for theEarth, and she also admired the beauty of it periodically. For example, she said this:

Wangari Maathai's Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech...
Wangari Maathai expresses her gratitude to the world for her Nobel Peace Prize, and also calls her audience to action. Her goal is to convince the
world that the environment has much more importance than most people seem to realize. In her speech she begins by expressing her gratitude, and
persuading her audience that she is worth listening to. Second she discusses the importance of the environment and explains how the Green Belt
Movement has helped and changed the world. She then clarifies the problems still occurring. After establishing the problems, she goes on to make her
call to action. Lastly, she ends by establishing pathos.
Maathai expresses her gratitude in the beginning of the speech. She thanks all the people that made the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She does this to ensure the listeners that taking care of the environment does much more than make the world we live in look better. Taking care of the
environment also takes part in ensuring a successful democracy and many other important things in society. The idea that Maathai is attempting to get
across to everyone is that the Earth is our friend and we should give back what we take. She helps us understand this by explaining the awful chain
reactions that occur when we don't replenish what we have consumed from Earth.
Third, she makes her call to action. She asks everyone to take part in something to help the environment. She addresses each group of people
separately. Men and women of all races, children, young adults, everyone, can take part in something to help. "In the course of history, there comes a
time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give
hope to each other. That time is now. (4)" Hersentence structure of "That time is now," really gives emphasis on what she wants. It is short and to
the point. It's also a very simple sentence. She didn't replace simple words with fancier words. This shows that what she is asking from people isn't
rocket science. She is asking for something as simple as planting trees or recycling. Her call to action is for everyone to contribute to helping take care
of the environment in some way.

Green Belt Movement
While Wangari Maathai and Vanda Shiva both began very different movements, they did have an overlapping goal– to better the environment. Maathai
takes a more hands on approach with her Green Belt Movement where she educates women in Kenya how to grow trees whereas Shiva educates people
on climate change and how to stop it through the Navdanya Movement. These two movements have the potential to change the world around us.
In researching these two movements, it is easy to see the similarity of their beginnings. Though the Green Belt Movement began in Kenya and the
Navdanya Movement began in India, their target audience was, at first, small communities. Maathai's audience was specifically the rural women in
Kenya. She states that planting these trees would directly impact the women of Kenya by supplying them with enough wood to use to cook and to use
as fencing and fodder for livestock. (Maathai, 367) This movement also provided them with a job where they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Maathai states that the amount of malnutrition directly relates to the amount of firewood available. She explains that due to the lack of firewood,
more families were eating processed foods (white bread, maize flour, and white rice) that seemed to be more practical than the more nutritious
options available (Maathai, 366). And, as mentioned before, one of the pros of the Green Belt Movement is allowing the women to use the wood
from the trees planted as firewood. On the other hand, Shiva brings up that processed foods are harming not just the people eating them, but the
environment as well. She also explains that we have been led to falsely believe that the industrialization of agriculture is a good thing when in reality,
it is not (Shiva, 379). Both of these women explain different issues that come with processed foods in their respected areas. Is this same harm not

Rise Of Ecology
The "Rise of ecology" was a very interesting and mind refreshing documentary film depicting the 10 different disasters that have devastated our
planet. This documentary was a good teachable moment for us to take the necessary measure to ensure the safety of the citizens and the planet. The
film also emphasized that we should minimize the amount to pollution that we release in to our atmosphere. We see that its always the people who
suffer at the hands of major corporations who are just hungry for profits. The film mentions that these major corporations take the consequences of
catastrophic events lightly. They do everything they can to increase the profits even at the expense of their own workers. The movie "Pandora"
which I recently watched shares a lot of similarities to the documentary film "Rise of ecology" in a way that took me by a surprise. The movie tells a
story of how human error came to cause the malfunction of a nuclear power plant causing the nation to go in to panic mode. The movie starts in an
interesting way, a flashback where the main character and his friends were just children making assumptions of what the new mysterious
development in their town was all about. Some of the kids responded by saying that the nuclear reactor plant was a rice cooker, another a robot and
finally the little girl responded by saying that her teacher told her that "it was a box and that if it was open they would all be in trouble".

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi And The Prosperity Workers
The Prosperity Workers
There are many types of people around the world who help others in the pursuit of social justice. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and
Wangari Maathai are some of the type who were looking for justice, equality, and equal opportunities. These human rights activists all fought for their
rights and persisted in trying to make a change in the world around them.
One of the most popular human rights activists who fought for racial equality, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would stop at no length to achieve this.
"Gandhi developed his philosophy of "Satyagraha," or resistance through non–violent civil disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all
Indians and non–whites. Practices of Satyagraha included boycotts, protest marches, and fasts. He encouraged others to defend their rights in this
manner, and to work together to end racial injustice in South Africa" (Study Synce). One for encouraging people to face their fears,Gandhi would let
people get out of their comfort zones and fight for what is theirs; With this, Gandhi would also have people who did not agree with him. The author
stated that Gandhi was sent to prison for 6 years, Gandhi had been thrown off a train in South America because he was Indian, and had attempts of
assassination against him, the final one being successful from a Buddhist extremist Nathuram Vinayak Godse (Sivananda). Even though Gandhi had
faced obstacles such as these, nevertheless, people still rallied to him and supported him during troubling times, this would help Gandhi achieve racial
justice."Gandhi's firm and tenacious adherence to the cause of the poor, the downtrodden Harijans, and the common man of the Indian village, is
indeed worthy of emulation. Through all the vicissitudes of time and power and fame, he kept before the vision of the Indian Congress the fundamental
purpose for which it came into being–the amelioration of the suffering of the poor. Uncrowned king of the land, he remained a friend of the poor; he
lived for them, moved among them as one of them, and served them with all his heart. He saw God in them, and in their service wore out his
body"(Sivananda). As seen from what Gandhi had done and how people were inspired by him,

Wangata Maathai Speech Analysis
Wangari Muta Maathai was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, delivering her acceptance speech to not only those in Oslo City
Hall, but it was also televised for the world to witness. Her speech mentions several problems the world faces, especially in her home country of
Kenya and all of Africa. She was an environmentalist and an activist who wanted to do more than offer a speech, but to provide a solution which
she believed anyone would be able to contribute in. The speech, if the audience was not nearly as formal and Maathai's approach was less
memorized, could have made a far better impact than what it did. However, with the use of emotional appeal and taking advantage of her credibility,
Wangari Muta Maathai delivered a speech well done for her needs to at the least mention what she believes is truly a situation which must be
handled. More often than not, Maathai uses familiar words for her general audience, introducing a language with emotional impact but simultaneously
reminding them that every problem needs a solution. For example, she says, "my fellow Africans, as we embrace this recognition, let us use it to
intensify our commitment to our people, to reduce conflicts and poverty and thereby improve their quality of life." This of course, is directed
specifically to her people, as televised. However, depending on who she is directing her message to, her vocabulary changes. "Excellencies, ladies and

Of those children, 9 million children have never been to school in Nigeria. In comparison to other countries, Nigeria has the most out of school
children in the world. The youth are not learning in Nigeria because of crammed classes, lack of supplies, and incompetent educators. In Nigeria,
there is an average student to teacher ratio of 49:1. Because of the scarce amount of teachers, the students cannot be focused on individually and
are less likely to learn in class. In Nigerian schools, about 80 percent of children to not have textbooks for all subjects. How can students expect to
learn if they do not have the sufficient supplies to do so? The teachers in Nigeria aren't exactly helping with this issue. In fact, 40 percent of primary
school teachers in Nigeria are not qualified for the job. The students will have an even tougher time learning if the teachers cannot instruct their class
effectively. This problem is most distinct in northwest and northeast Nigeria. When all of these factors are amassed, it is very challenging for a child

Williams, the author of Refuge, is a naturalist, a feminist, and a writer who brings such power into everything she touches. Her passion for change has
brought so much goodness into the world. She has beat many obstacles, including her own struggle with herself, which to her is the same fight we have
with nature, and finally accepting the outcome; whatever that may be unnatural, or natural, is the secret to life. While we read about what Terry

In 2004, Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize for her achievements with the Green Belt Movement, which is a non–profit NGO that she founded in her
native Kenya. Planting trees for food, timber and fuel isn't an act that anyone could see as the first step to winning a Nobel Peace Prize. Although,
with that simple action, Wangari Maathai of Kenya started down the path that helped to regain her country's land from a period of deforestation
while supplying new sources of nourishment to rural communities. Terry is a Mormon who grew up loving nature and aiming to keep it natural so it
was hard for her to understand why there were many people who didn't care. She found peace in a bird refuge where she then went multiple times.
This was her hideaway place, where things made sense. At Great Salt Lake, the bird refuge is home to her, and herfamily before her. She learned a lot
from her grandmother about the ways of the lake, the animals, and how it was to be conserved. Williams clearly takes an ecofeminist stand in Refuge
because women are more connected with nature than men. and equality between humanity and earth is very important. The push Williams forces
towards women's rights sends a strong message of resistance about the male patriarchy. Because of the positive outcomes her changes would bring,
Williams viewpoint for ecological safety is very significant. There is a lot of progress to be made, but by

Wangari Maathai, who pioneered the movement, was an extremely brave leader. She rallied women to stand up not only to the male leaders
around them, but to the government as a whole. However, the movement faced some of the same problems that the early feminists did. Their lack
of prior experience in speaking in public settings was a detriment. With no sufficient models around to demonstrate how this sort of movement
should be presented, many people in that case would have given up and waited for someone else to take action. Wangari, however, persevered,
encouraging women to learn how to plant trees, store rainwater and provide the firewood and food needed to support a family. She became a role
model to many women who never before had a strong female figure to look up to. In the text book, we read about "Activism, Change. And Feminist
Futures". One of the points it covered was the 10 most powerful women in the world. All of the women on that list are active role models in the

Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora
The experiences of the women of the African diaspora are as diverse as the regions they have come to inhabit. Despite the variety in their local
realities, African and African–descended women across the planet share in many common experiences. Wherever they have made their homes, these
women tend to occupy inferior or marginalized positions within their societies. Whether in the United States, Europe, Latin America, or even Africa
itself, black women must confront what Patricia Hill Collins describes as a "matrix of domination" which has, for centuries, perpetuated their

Even Maathai's ancestors, the Kikuyu and Maasai peoples, were among them.
The majority of these forced dislocations took place in the highland regions. The rich soil and temperate climate of this area had proven attractive to
native African peoples for centuries; and it seemed the new British settlers found it equally tempting. After most of the land's original occupants were
transported to the Rift Valley region of western Kenya, settlers began taking advantage of the highlands' vast natural resources. The land was
essentially ravaged as ancient forests were clear–cut in order to make room for agricultural plots. The introduction of the plantation system, with its
non–native plant species, large–scale hunting, and systematic recruitment of Africans as field laborers, signaled the next phase in the oppression of
native Africans (Maathai 6–9).
The situation became even more complex when the British colonial administration introduced a currency–based income tax system. For centuries, the
Kenyan economy had largely rested on the exchange of livestock and other goods. With this in mind, it should come as little surprise that such a
drastic shift put native Kenyans in a rather precarious position. Since nearly all "acceptable" currency rested in the hands of colonists, many Kenyans
were forced to leave their reserves and work as hired hands on the farms of white settlers, essentially becoming squatters on their own ancestral lands

I believe that people have the power to change, but we must we the one to encourage it, to play the role of moderator to transition people to use more
environmental friendly habits. This means a global mobilization of peoples and organizations everywhere, working to educate and inform people on

Annotated Bibliography On Unbowed A Memoir

  • 1. Annotated Bibliography On Unbowed A Memoir Tuesday October 7th 2014 Shaneik Smith Professor Williams Writ 101 Wangari Bibliography Maathai, Wangari. Unbowed: A Memoir. New York, Random House, 2006. Print. In this Memoir Wangari explains all of the trials and tribulations she has went through to get where she was today. She has endured derision, death threats, imprisonment and beatings which is usual for woman of color. However, it was unusual because she was fighting her sisters and a better environment. Maathai was internationally acknowledged for her struggle for democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation, and served on the board of many organizations. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. But what amazes me about Wangari is that she is the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the prize, which is her lifelong refusal to be defined by anyone or anything other than herself. She won the noble peace prize in 2004 for "her contribution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Challenge for Africa. New York, Random House, 2009. Print. Maathai believes there is much more to Africa than what is gleaned in a headline. The headline often provides information of poverty and debt in Africa as well as disease; which some has no context. In Maathai's 35 years of experience, at all levels of society, she understands the context of those headlines in the media. In her book, The Challenge For Africa, she writes about her plan to tackle the many trials Africa faces. She knows the troubles are "severe and wide–ranging," but sees realistic options for change. She became motivated with the situations at hand to create a source of organization to help her solve the problems. Wangari was determined to make her country a better for her people as well as herself. She deftly describes what Africans can and need to do for themselves, stressing all the while responsibility and accountability. Impassioned and empathetic, The Challenge for Africa is a book of immense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Kenyan People Do To Save The Environment Save the wildlife! Save the environment! The environment and livestock in Kenya are decreasing rapidly. People in Kenya are cutting down trees to plant coffee beans to sell to other countries, and the livestock is decreasing due to the populations of lions. Later on, they found an invention that will help livestock be safe at night. The Kenyan people and their government are making significant changes to help protect the environment and the animals. Kenya is a country east of Africa with a population with about 45 million people living in it today. The capital of the city is Nairobi it is a popular city known for its national wildlife park. In an article called, "A Kenyan Teen's Discovery: Let There Be Lights to Save the Lions" written by Nina Gregory, the author states, "Through many efforts have been made to protect the Lions in the area, when the lions kill the local livestock some residents respond by killing the big cats." At night Lions would come poke ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an article called, "Growing Trees for Kenya by Elizabeth Cregan, the author mentions "Wangari Maathai went off to a college in Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas and came home to Kenya. She saw something very devastating. Her whole forests go knocked down so that people can plant coffee beans to sell to other countries. Dr. Wangari is going to try to change that by planting trees to fill the land. "Since the trees take 3 to 4 years to mature they thought of planting seeds was the best way of providing villagers with firewood for cooking and fruit to sell and eat. Village woman could feed their children and earn small amounts of money by raising seedlings". • 3. Xl Keystone Pipeline Research Paper XL Keystone Pipeline Research Paper "In a few decades, the relationship between the environment, resources, and conflict may seem almost as obvious as the connection we see today between human rights, democracy, and peace (Nobel Peace Prize Medalist Maathai 2004)." A Canadian oil company that goes by TransCanada hopes to build an oil pipeline that would extend an enormous 1,200 miles onto an already gargantuan 2,600 mile long pipeline. Keystone XL represents just under a third of the entire Keystone project, and every other piece of pipe has been built and laid out. In fact, TransCanada 's pipeline system is already shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil from the Canadian oil sands across the U.S. border –– and into Illinois (Diamond). The current proposal would take the pipeline on a journey all the way through to Texas. Extracting crude oil from oil sands would be enormously problematic for the environment as it causes the pumping of about 17% more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than standard crude oil extraction. Tar sand oil has levels of carbon dioxide emissions that are three to four times higher than those of conventional oil, due to more energy–intensive removal and refining processes (Friends of the Earth). The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline would stimulate employment, the effects would be temporary and the whole scheme would produce a negative long term outcome. The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. She Persisted: An Analysis Of Girl Empowerment Introduction: We live in a society where we are constantly being told how to behave, look, and think a certain way because of our gender. These messages are found in the media we consume daily, ranging from advertisements, billboards, movies, magazines and even children's books. They are also found in daily interactions, such as borderwork or in norms that "involve rewards and punishments" (Clark–IbaГ±ez., Marisol Lecture 14 Mar.). Socialization, the traditional theory of children in sociology, is described as "the process by which children adapt to and internalize society" (Clark–IbaГ±ez., Marisol Lecture, 14 Feb.). The topic of this research is girl empowerment because I believe it's important that young girls read encouraging narratives at an early age. "Children's pre–school books are an important cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I was analyzing the children's books, I noticed that several main characters were from a variety of ethnicities such as African American, Mexican, or White. The book, She Persisted, was the only book that contained a variety of ethnicities. But in Olivia, it was difficult to assume the race of the character because she was a pig. Other books like in I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark mention the extra hurdles that the character had to jump over because of her Jewish background. It's crucial to hear these success stories where the protagonist triumphs in the end although they experience sexism and racism on their road to success. Across the ten children's books, there was a mixture of social classes as well. I found this important because it creates another pathway in which the reader can connect with the protagonist. Young girls from a lower social class, are often more discouraged, because of their economic status, but protagonist like Wangari or Elena, can give them hope that they too can achieve great ... Hence, I researched and found this doctoral program offered by The Swiss Management Center University (SMC) which is a high quality multifaceted online education program which is accredited by Accredited Council of Business Schools Program (ACBSP). Furthermore, it is affordable, flexible very informative and relevant in both academic and business sectors. (SMC, n.d.). Several people influenced my decision to pursue a doctorate degree at different levels. First, Dr. Wangari Maathai who was the first Kenyan Woman to pursue a doctorate degree and was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, (Graf, 2016). Secondly, inspiration from my former ... At the same time, it is necessary that I maintain effective communication methods which will include both written and oral communications. Besides, it is also necessary that I acknowledge that failure is also an important learning process which is a part of the double–loop learning method (Argyris, 1991). This is extensively elaborated in the article Teaching Research Methods for Doctoral Students in Education talks about teaching doctoral students research methods that they could apply in their field. When doctoral students first enrolled, their aim was to do well academically. However, as time progressed, the students become interested in the multidisciplinary research methodologies process. Furthermore, they learned different aspects such as effective data collection through the interview, exploring documented work such as syllabus and historical documentation through reading past research projects. Moreover, they also learned analysis of the results included quantitative and qualitative method while taking into consideration theoretical work combined. (Coronel Llamas & Boza, 2011). • 6. Sudanese Genocide Research Paper Source l In Mike Keefe's cartoon he reveals the brutality of what happened it Sudan and how the UN could have done something to stop the massacre of the Sudanese people. Even after a horrific genocide occurred The UN were still slow to connect the dots of what happened. The genocide was "spelt" out right in front of the UN they still didn't see what happened. They could have jumped in and prevented the killing from happening but instead did not come in till after the fact. The UN tried to ignore the fact of what was happening to avoid having to interfere with the ongoing genocide. Unless the killing is happening in their own back yard they are slow to react. Source ll In source two Wangari Maathai is stating that people do not see the symbiotic relationship between the environment, resources and conflict like they do with democracy, human rights and peace. With democracy, human rights and peace one cannot be without the other. Democracy cannot be explained without human rights and human rights can only be truly effective in a democratic state. The Field Of Environmental Science The field of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary field that integrates biology, ecology, and many others to the study of the environment and the solutions to environmental problems. Because of the expansion of the human population and the ways in which we use our resources, it has resulted in many problems such as climate change and ocean pollution. Many scientists and other various organizations are contributing to finding solutions to the environmental problems. This paper describes the contributions made by Wangari Maathai and Rachel Carson to the field of Environmental Science. In September 1960, Mathaai was one of about three hundred fortunate students to win a scholarship. She was able to attend the Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, where she was able to learn more about the environment by earning a bachelor 's degree in biology in 1964 and a Master's degree two years later. She returned to Kenya to earn a Doctorates degree in veterinary medicine at the University if Nairobi. During her studies at the university, Maathai and her female colleagues had to deal with gender discrimination. When they tried to change the unjust treatment, they were told by the university officials that "you should just take the basic salary because the rest of the services that men get you don't need" (Maathai, 2006, p.115). But they did not give up. Eventually, Maathai's work paid off because she became the first woman in East Africa to earn a Doctorates Degree. Her experience with gender discrimination and her love for the environment enabled her to join organizations that advocated for women's rights as well as environmental organizations. Through the various organizations and the scientific community, she found out about the deforestation of Kenya's forests and the rural women's lack of resources. • 8. Unbowed A Memoir Gender Roles Throughout the post–independence era of Africa, gender roles and gender relations are changing. In a few countries in Africa, during the post–independence period, there are women that want to break the traditions of male generated fields in the work and politics. The film Faat KinГЁ by Ousmane SembГЁne, follows African woman Faat KinГЁ through her day to day struggles for success in work and family during the post–independence era of Africa. Wangari Maathai's book Unbowed: A Memoir describes her childhood and accomplishments that she made in Kenya. African American women around the world are overcoming the gender barriers in work forces that are commonly operated by men. In Ousmane Sembene's movie Faat KinГЁ, we follow Faat KinГЁ's daily livelihood as she finds her place in the Senegalese economic market. KinГЁ is a single mother, who was disowned by her father when she became pregnant with her first born Aby. Aby's father Mr. Gaye was KinГЁ's high school teacher and love, who eventually betrayed and expelled her before she could take a test. • 9. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement When it comes to leadership of women in the environment, Wangari Mathai is a good example. Wangari Maathai was a woman from Kenya who saw the effects of deforestation, as well as the relationship it had with the rest of the environment, like topsoil runoff which leads to poor soil for farming and poor water quality (Winright p. 270). Therefore, she started the Green Belt Movement which moved to plant more trees causing less topsoil runoff which leads to more planting ground and cleaner water (Winright p. 270). By looking to better the world in which she had lived in Wangari was able to express solidarity in what she did. Solidarity as stated in the text is" the ties in a society that bind people to one another so that they are able to relate to and support people of different backgrounds", as well... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By doing this she also incorporated subsidarity. Subsidarity "is the principle of Catholic social teaching that explains how responsibility for upholding the common good should be shared by individual people, local organizations, community groups, non–governmental organizations and various levels of government" (Winright, p. 231). It is also important to note that subsidarity "holds that responsibility for the common good should be maintained at the most local level possible" (Winright, p. 232). This was also a key aspect of Wangari's movement. She recognized that everyone had a responsibility for the world that we live in and she also realized that by "empowering people to transform where they live is crucial, because then they become invested in, and take ownership of the projects" (Winright, p. 271). Therefore, in order to get others involved she first started by getting local women to help and become involved in her movement to better the land on which they lived. In many ways one person can make a change and inspire others to do the same. • 10. Reflective Essay On Unbowed By Wangari Maathai As a person of color, it is hard to find television that I can easily identify with. There are not a lot of shows that I can identify with and I believe that these shows are needed to promote growth of people of color in varying career fields. This disparity is because of societal norms that are profitable in television, and the open acceptance of people of color being in either well off conditions or in the hip–hop industry. Representation is important in both the job market and in media, because personal limitations are mostly drawn from the imagery that is the most acceptable. In a book titled "Unbowed", a memoir written by the creator of the Green Belt movement Wangari Maathai, the author writes about her experiences with education in Kenya. After the colonization of Kenya, there was a clear line drawn as to how far women could obtain an education. The author also states that there was a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He questioned my amazement and told me something that I thought about for a while. He said that the students who did not finish school were either not encouraged or could not see themselves in higher education because of the social culture we were raised in. After hearing this I thought about shows such as "Love and Hip–hop Atlanta" and "Empire". These shows glorify the pursuit of careers that have a marginal opportunity of success, rather than diversifying the opportunities that students of color can obtain. This scenario reminds me of the environment that was described in the book "Unbowed." Before Wangari Maathai challenged her societal norms, the educational system in which she was raised in would have continually deterred women from pursuing higher roles in education. Though shows such as "Love and Hip–hop Atlanta" and "Empire" marginalize the opportunities of success for students of color, they are needed to create a variety in the media ... Maathai's Green Belt Crusade or movement was the outcome of Maathai's attentiveness of Kenya's environmental decay. She realized that if she wanted to create community, governmental, and cost–effective condition of the country, an improvement in Kenya's ecosystem was needed. Wangari knew for a fact that there was a strong relationship concerning the community and cost–effective filth of the country of Kenya. Wangari Maathai was a political and ecological activist who fought for democracy, human rights and the conservation of the environment. The role of compassion in Maathai's work is relevant through empowering the community to value the environment they live in by reserving and protecting our resources. For example: Maathai created the Green Belt Movement in her country because women had to travel a long way to get their food and water and everything they needed to survive. It is a movement of peace and hope to help people understand why they have to maintain their communities clean and how can they plant their own seedlings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Unbowed By Wangari Maathai: Book Analysis Gender oppression is one major issue that has been present in all countries at some point, with people fighting for equality in different ways and forms. Wangari Maathai, a fighter against gender oppression and other environmental problems, told a truly amazing and stunning story in her autobiography Unbowed. As her story unfolded, it was impressive to see how effectively she portrayed the fights against gender inequalities, and how she explained the gender oppression she experienced in Kenya. Wangari Maathai's autobiography successfully confronts gender oppression in Kenya and allows for change in this time by effectively using specific examples from her experiences to show how she handled beginning the fight against gender oppression in a mature, determined, and courageous way. These qualities having been presented in her examples so effectively truly provides the inspiration for others to also stand up to gender oppression. • 14. Science And Rachel Carson Similarities From the beginning of time, science has been an essential part of the creation and progression of civilization. Although many scientists and their work are well known, such as that of Isaac Newton, female scientists are pushed into the shadows and discredited. Scientists such as Rachel Carson and Professor Wangari Maathai are often forgotten, but have done incredible work that was essential to the survival of the planet. Despite focusing their efforts in completely different regions of the world, both women had a major impact and had many similarities between them. Although the scientists shared many similarities, their origins and childhoods were completely different. Rachel Carson grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, surrounded by nature and forests. Her mother, a school teacher, taught Carson lots of valuable lessons about the forests and its many species, causing her to take a strong interest in animals. Carson also grew up during the second industrial revolutionary era, which caused her to see the waste products of factories and the destruction that it caused. This also gave her a different perspective into the environmental world, because she saw the changes all around her. Carson's childhood also shares some similarity to that of Maathai, who also grew up around nature. Professor Wangari Maathai came from Nyeri, Kenya and was born many years after than Carson in 1940. She used this metaphor to express her emotional state of how she feels when she heard the news about her Noble Peace Prize award. Usually, this happened to every human being, when that person received something he or she is not expecting at that particular moment. For example, I could remember August 7, 1997, when I received a scholarship award letter from the Ministry of Ghana Education Service. Stating that I am awarded a scholarship to attend Senior High school (SHS), based on my educational performance as well as my incredible achievement on the Junior High school final examination. I was astonished and could not believe that was meet for me, so I turned over the envelope to look at the address whether the letter was really for me. Behold, the message was indeed addressed to me, immediately, tears started running down my cheeks as I read the letter over. I was astounded because my parents were contemplating how to finance my SHS schooling when this surprising news came, so it was like some heavy burden have been taken off my parent's shoulder. Finally, I will agree with Maathai, who said that "the news hit me like a thunderbolt," because I was shocked by the news like it hit Maathai as "thunderbolt" (Maathai 291). The Components Of Adichie 's Speech To vaguely review the components of Adichie's speech, she breaks down the important details on how she is able to fully direct a social situation in a manner that is relatable to other women and other genders not considered a "dominant" race. Adichie tells many different stories of social situations that either she or others she knows have endured. Her emotional take on the problem has given her the right to stand up and choose the path where most men would feel the need to ignore instead of acknowledge the right for a woman to do so. To not only call herself and believe herself to be a feminist, but to also push the meaning for non–feminists and children exposed to the logical to open up their eyes and see that there truly is a problem with the male dominance epidemic. Thesis Statement: According to Adichie's speech "We should all be feminists," she presses the issue on how the equality of both races should have equal opportunities and that the text targets everyone instead of one specific type of person. The entirety of the speech itself is to not only target young women going through a social situation where there is injustice in gender, but to also focus on the wrongdoings of the male race and how their point of view involving females and other genders can affect the way we function on a daily basis. Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora Essay Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora The Kenyan feminist and environmental activist, Wangari Maathai, explores the legacy of colonialism and oppression in her native country through her moving 2006 memoir, Unbowed. Maathai explains that over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Africa experienced a massive influx of white settlers. In an effort to solidify control over recently acquired colonies, many European powers had encouraged large numbers of their ethnically white citizens to make a new home on the African continent. As a result, thousands of native Africans were displaced. Maathai's ancestors, the Kikuyu and Maasai peoples were among them. The majority of these forced dislocations took... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As time passed, European domination drastically altered the African landscape – both physically and culturally. Traditional roles, practices, and beliefs were either completely subverted or modified to fall in line with European cultural ideals. Doubtlessly, this process of subjugation worked to the detriment of native populations throughout the continent. Even though all members of indigenous communities have suffered under this system, African women remain especially vulnerable to its harmful effects. As Mary Kolawole points out in her comprehensive work, Womanism and African Consciousness, these women must confront a set of oppressions unique to their position as both black Africans and women. During her discussion of African women's current struggle for recognition, Kolawole argues that, although colonialism displaced many African traditions, the patriarchal social structure remained. In many ways, she holds, European colonization widened the rift between African men and women even further (Kolawole 34). Although African and European traditions share in the elevation of the male over the female, most African cultures offered women a greater position of respect within society, as well as more "positive avenues of self–liberation" than were available to European women ... Wangari had the courage to fight the government, which unfortunately was supporting the destruction of the forests, and also the tenacity to be a leader of her people in times of crisis. Her voice was heard and carried a positive message in the face of governmental threats and societal fear, which ultimately changed history and brought nature close to men by reuniting the trees with their brothers, the people of Kenya. The traditions of the Kenyan people are deeply rooted and related almost entirely to their lands. They become one with the land from birth to death. Review Of Wangari Maathai's Replenishing The Earth "If you destroy the forest then the river will stop flowing, the rains will become irregular, the crops will fail and you will die of hunger and starvation." Wangari Maathai It is so natural, in our current world, to feel disengaged from the physical earth. In spite of desperate notices and heightening worry over the condition of our planet, many individuals became in touch with the normal world. Wangari Maathai invested decades of working with the Green Belt Movement to help ladies in provincial Kenya plant and maintain many trees. With their hands in the soil, these ladies frequently got themselves engaged and "at home" in a way they never did. Maathai wanted to confer that inclination to everybody, and trusts that the key lies in conventional qualities such as adore for the earth, self–improvement, appreciation and regard, and a pledge to benefit. For scholars like Ken Booth, the sovereign state is not the main provider of security, rather one of the main causes of individual insecurity. Traditional security policies effectively conceal some of the most fundamental human needs when merely focusing on security in terms of aspirations to achieve national interests, thus failing to protect the individuals that make up the state (Stone 2009). As Booth describes it people and groups can only achieve true security if they do not deprive others of it (Booth 2007). These human rights activists all fought for their rights and persisted in trying to make a change in the world around them. This movement not only brought on the planting of trees and crops throughout the land but it helped her to understand the problems that were arising in Kenya. This is where she learned of the corruption of the Kenyan government and how it was affecting her people. This is when she truly found that their needed to be action taken to make a change for Kenya. One example of Maathai taking action against the Kenyan Government was in 1989 when Daniel Arap Moi was President of Kenya. He planned on building a skyscraper in Nairobi's Uhuru Park, which brought great concern to Wangari. She took action by writing to politicians, companies, along with the media to exploit the nonsense of constructing this building. This is where I initially drew my comparisons to her and Gandhi. She knew that something had to be done to protect the park, like Gandhi, when she was ignored ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Wangata Maathai Speech Analysis Wangari Muta Maathai was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, delivering her acceptance speech to not only those in Oslo City Hall, but it was also televised for the world to witness. Her speech mentions several problems the world faces, especially in her home country of Kenya and all of Africa. She was an environmentalist and an activist who wanted to do more than offer a speech, but to provide a solution which she believed anyone would be able to contribute in. The speech, if the audience was not nearly as formal and Maathai's approach was less memorized, could have made a far better impact than what it did. However, with the use of emotional appeal and taking advantage of her credibility, Wangari Muta Maathai delivered a speech well done for her needs to at the least mention what she believes is truly a situation which must be handled. More often than not, Maathai uses familiar words for her general audience, introducing a language with emotional impact but simultaneously reminding them that every problem needs a solution. For example, she says, "my fellow Africans, as we embrace this recognition, let us use it to intensify our commitment to our people, to reduce conflicts and poverty and thereby improve their quality of life." This of course, is directed specifically to her people, as televised. However, depending on who she is directing her message to, her vocabulary changes. • 34. Advocacy For Afric Education Advocacy for Africa "Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit." Education is important because a more educated society will be more successful. It is urgent that education is compulsory and free in Africa, including after primary school because the youth needs to have the basic skills and be educated enough to live successful and productive lives. The children represent the future of the country, and if they are educated, the country is set to become more prosperous in the future. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of those children, 9 million children have never been to school in Nigeria. In comparison to other countries, Nigeria has the most out of school children in the world. The youth are not learning in Nigeria because of crammed classes, lack of supplies, and incompetent educators. In Nigeria, there is an average student to teacher ratio of 49:1. Because of the scarce amount of teachers, the students cannot be focused on individually and are less likely to learn in class. In Nigerian schools, about 80 percent of children to not have textbooks for all subjects. How can students expect to learn if they do not have the sufficient supplies to do so? The teachers in Nigeria aren't exactly helping with this issue. In fact, 40 percent of primary school teachers in Nigeria are not qualified for the job. The students will have an even tougher time learning if the teachers cannot instruct their class effectively. This problem is most distinct in northwest and northeast Nigeria. When all of these factors are amassed, it is very challenging for a child in Nigeria to grow up and live a happy, prosperous life. Wangari Maathai made a large impact on Africa. She was an environmental advocate, as well as a political activist. She was born in Kenya, and studied in colleges in the United States as well as Kenya. Wangari Maathai was on the National Council of Women of Kenya, and she introduced the idea of planting trees as a community that eventually led to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Terry Tempest Williams Essay Terry Tempest Williams and Wangari Maathai are both very powerful women who devoted their lives to improving the world one step at a time. Williams, the author of Refuge, is a naturalist, a feminist, and a writer who brings such power into everything she touches. Her passion for change has brought so much goodness into the world. She has beat many obstacles, including her own struggle with herself, which to her is the same fight we have with nature, and finally accepting the outcome; whatever that may be unnatural, or natural, is the secret to life. While we read about what Terry Tempest Williams writes about hermother's difficulties while struggling with cancer, we also have Wangari Maathai speaking about all the violence she faces in Kenya. ... Planting trees for food, timber and fuel isn't an act that anyone could see as the first step to winning a Nobel Peace Prize. Although, with that simple action, Wangari Maathai of Kenya started down the path that helped to regain her country's land from a period of deforestation while supplying new sources of nourishment to rural communities. Terry is a Mormon who grew up loving nature and aiming to keep it natural so it was hard for her to understand why there were many people who didn't care. She found peace in a bird refuge where she then went multiple times. This was her hideaway place, where things made sense. At Great Salt Lake, the bird refuge is home to her, and herfamily before her. She learned a lot from her grandmother about the ways of the lake, the animals, and how it was to be conserved. Williams clearly takes an ecofeminist stand in Refuge because women are more connected with nature than men. and equality between humanity and earth is very important. The push Williams forces towards women's rights sends a strong message of resistance about the male patriarchy. Because of the positive outcomes her changes would bring, Williams viewpoint for ecological safety is very significant. There is a lot of progress to be made, but by ... Greece faces an economic instability without deforestation. Fuel taxes that were originally installed to hep combat ocean pollutions, have made created prices families can not afford. These families instead turn to fire–based alternatives for heat, and this including the burning of wood. Illegal imports of wood have become more and more common throughout the country due to the demand for more wood. And with an influx of illegal activity, police reinforcements have been used to arrest violators of the laws. Reforestation is the most widely used strategy to combat deforestation. • 37. The Women's Rights Movement: The Greenbelt Movement Large groups of people coming together to work towards a common cause can be a powerful force. Throughout time there have been a great deal of different causes that people have decided are worth fighting for. One element that is the same across all of these groups is that at its core was one or a few people that decided there was something worth fighting for. In the case of the Greenbelt movement, the woman at the center was Wangari Maathai, and the cause was the protection of the environment which supported her family and many others in rural Kenya. This was a movement that was opposed many views of society at the time and met great governmental push–back. By standing up for what she believed to be an important cause, Wangari was able to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wangari Maathai, who pioneered the movement, was an extremely brave leader. She rallied women to stand up not only to the male leaders around them, but to the government as a whole. However, the movement faced some of the same problems that the early feminists did. Their lack of prior experience in speaking in public settings was a detriment. With no sufficient models around to demonstrate how this sort of movement should be presented, many people in that case would have given up and waited for someone else to take action. Wangari, however, persevered, encouraging women to learn how to plant trees, store rainwater and provide the firewood and food needed to support a family. She became a role model to many women who never before had a strong female figure to look up to. In the text book, we read about "Activism, Change. And Feminist Futures". One of the points it covered was the 10 most powerful women in the world. All of the women on that list are active role models in the global community who show how important it is for women to take charge of their own destiny. I can distinctly recall the aroma of Coco Butter, which I only learned to identify in the following weeks. Growing up with a friend who is from Ghana never seemed odd to me, other than I would rarely be able to meet his entire family. Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora Essay Colonialism and Oppression in the African Diaspora The experiences of the women of the African diaspora are as diverse as the regions they have come to inhabit. Despite the variety in their local realities, African and African–descended women across the planet share in many common experiences. Wherever they have made their homes, these women tend to occupy inferior or marginalized positions within their societies. Whether in the United States, Europe, Latin America, or even Africa itself, black women must confront what Patricia Hill Collins describes as a "matrix of domination" which has, for centuries, perpetuated their subjugation and oppression. According to Collins, a matrix of domination is a comprehensive social organization in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even Maathai's ancestors, the Kikuyu and Maasai peoples, were among them. The majority of these forced dislocations took place in the highland regions. The rich soil and temperate climate of this area had proven attractive to native African peoples for centuries; and it seemed the new British settlers found it equally tempting. After most of the land's original occupants were transported to the Rift Valley region of western Kenya, settlers began taking advantage of the highlands' vast natural resources. The land was essentially ravaged as ancient forests were clear–cut in order to make room for agricultural plots. The introduction of the plantation system, with its non–native plant species, large–scale hunting, and systematic recruitment of Africans as field laborers, signaled the next phase in the oppression of native Africans (Maathai 6–9). The situation became even more complex when the British colonial administration introduced a currency–based income tax system. For centuries, the Kenyan economy had largely rested on the exchange of livestock and other goods. With this in mind, it should come as little surprise that such a drastic shift put native Kenyans in a rather precarious position. Since nearly all "acceptable" currency rested in the hands of colonists, many Kenyans were forced to leave their reserves and work as hired hands on the farms of white settlers, essentially becoming squatters on their own ancestral lands ... Thank you your Majesty, your Royal Highness, Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: Thank you for this Nobel Peace Prize, a prize that was well fought for between me and my fellow laureate, who is beside me today. I am here today, in Oslo, to accept this award, not for myself, but for the global cause of environmental betterment. I accept this award on behalf of the people who have fought to keep the earth green, and will continue to do so. So far this year, 1.9 billion tons of waste have been dumped, 28.43 percent of coral reefs have disappeared, 11.5 billion hectares of forests have been cut down or burned. 1.1 thousand species have gone extinct. I believe that if people only purchased the amount of food they consumed and did not waste food, then there would not be 6.5 tons of wasted fish. I believe that people have the power to change, but we must we the one to encourage it, to play the role of moderator to transition people to use more environmental friendly habits. This means a global mobilization of peoples and organizations everywhere, working to educate and inform people on global warming and their part in preventing this disaster. Conservation is not a movement of the few, but a movement of the entire world population, of the 7.5 billion people that are alive today. I walk around and preach this message of safe consumerism, but I know that I am only one person that, on the grand scale of the world, I am not much. But together, all of us have the power to change everything. Every day, I see people walking out of stores with their own bags, or people at the register declining plastic bags. I see people who opt to ride bikes, walk, and take public transportation instead of driving a personal vehicle. On a bigger scale, I see companies pushing for greener practices, aiming to reduce their waste and use sustainable
