- TB and money If you don’t have much money, you may not be able to buy food rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Poor nutrition can weaken your immune system so your body is less likely to kill TB bacteria if you breathe them in. You are at higher risk of getting ill with tuberculosis. It is easier to get TB if you have no heating and live in damp, dark or dusty conditions. TB bacteria can live in damp and dusty air for longer. If it’s dark, TB bacteria don’t get killed by sunlight. TB bacteria hang around in the room if there is no fresh air. Not having enough money is stressful, and stress can weaken your immune system. This can make you more likely to get ill with TB. Some people smoke or use drugs or alcohol to escape stress. Drugs, alcohol and smoking all weaken the immune system and make it more likely that you will get illnesses. TB and overcrowding Poor living conditions and overcrowding often go together and both increase TB risk. Hostels, student halls, prisons, refuges and rented housing with many people living together are all places where TB can spread more easily. You can’t get TB by sharing food, plates, cutlery or clothes. But if you are living with someone who has TB in their throat or lungs, they could pass it to you by coughing or sneezing. TB and homelessness People who have no fixed home might have to live and sleep rough and often don’t get proper meals. If you live rough, your immune system can get very weak. This means that people who do not have a secure place to live, are more at risk of getting TB. If you spend time close to someone who has infectious TB, you are more likely to get an infection and become ill. Homeless people who have TB are likely to be diagnosed late, when they are already seriously ill. Hostels that homeless people stay in tend to be busy, meaning untreated TB can be passed on to more people.
