Most Dangerous Game Movie Vs Book
"The Most Dangerous Game", also published as "The Hounds of Zaroff", is a short story by Richard
Connell, first published in Collier's book on January 19, 1924. The story features a big–game hunter
from New York who falls off a yacht and swims to an isolated island in the Caribbean, where he is
hunted by a Cossack aristocrat. The story is inspired by the big–game hunting safaris in Africa and
South America that were particularly fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s.
The story has been adapted numerous times, most notably for the 1932 RKO Pictures film The Most
Dangerous Game, starring Joel McCrea and Leslie Banks, and for a 1943 episode of the CBS Radio
series Suspense, starring Orson Welles.
Synopsis
Sanger Rainsford and his friend, Whitney, travel to Rio de Janeiro to hunt the region's big cat: the
jaguar. After a discussion about how they are "the hunters" instead of "the huntees", Whitney goes to
bed and Rainsford remains on deck. While Whitney returns to his quarters Rainsford hears
gunshots, climbs onto the yachts' rail to get a better view of the nearby Ship–Trap Island, and falls
overboard. After he realizes he cannot swim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

RKO Pictures' film released in 1932, The Most Dangerous Game. Joel McCrea stars as Rainsford;
Leslie Banks portrays Zaroff. The adaptation by James Ashmore Creelman adds two other principal
characters, brother–and–sister pair Eve Trowbridge and Martin Trowbridge, who are castaways
from a shipwreck. The Most Dangerous Game was co–directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack and Irving
Pichel; also with a score by Max Steiner, the film was a favorite project of producer Merian C.
Cooper. The production shared several sets with King Kong, a simultaneous RKO project that also
involved Schoedsack, Cooper, Wray, Armstrong, Creelman, and Steiner. The Most Dangerous Game

How Women 's Rights Improved Over The Last Century?
How Have Women's Rights Improved Over the Last Century? With the advancement of suffrage to

marches and demonstrations across the United States, women protested for their equal place in

beginning of a movement that would shape the beliefs and rights of today's society. It was on this
day that the fight for social and political equality among America's women began to develop. This
renowned movement, the Women's Rights Movement, had many goals in which mighty–powerful
women would achieve with a mind–set to push them through any barrier or obstacle obstructing
their path to equality. Lasting until 1920, the Women's Rights Movement had a target towards
changing how women were treated and looked upon within their "stereotypical" societies. Women
advocated their rights through organizations and campaigns, as well as educating others of the unfair
justice. With the help of the Women 's Rights Movement and the brave, fearless women who

Susan Brownell Anthony Essay
Susan Brownell Anthony: The Mother of America
If the Majority of this nation agrees that George Washington was the founding father of America,
then Susan B. Anthony would have to be the founding mother of America. She was the ultimate
leader in the woman's suffrage movement. The Suffrage movement started around 1840 and in a
way, it still continues today. Women have only been voting for 84 years (in America) while men
could vote from the start of civilization. In her time, women were not allowed to have anything
under their name from the moment they were born. If anything had the potential to be theirs, it
would instead legally be their father?s or male guardian?s until she was married. Even then, the
object would be given to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She knew that there was something wrong with this prospect and became zealous over the equality
of women. Her friend, Cady Stanton made a significant impact on Anthony?s life, in fact, Mr.
Stanton would say to Cady, ?You stir up Susan, and she stirs the world? (Kawalski n.p.). Susan
always had that instinct to be a great speaker, but she just needed the encouragement of her beloved
friend. Her strong will and personality would definitely have her life and those who were influential
accountable. Because she was raised in a Quaker family, she grew up in an environment where
women and men were treated more equally; this triggered her desire to speak out when she stepped
out into the real world and came to know that women were not treated anywhere close to equal to
men. She wanted to spread her opinion on the current issues and traveled around the nation. She
would travel to numerous states; South Dakota in 1890 for 7 months, Chicago in 1893 for 4 months,
the South for 2 months in 1895 and 1903, California in 1895, 1896, and 1905, London in 1899,
Berlin in 1904, Washington every year and made many other short stops (Garraty 550). She was the
second child of eight, but she never engaged herself in a serious relationship with a man because she
wanted her independence (Stansell n.p.). Traveling was not a big issue for her because she did not
have a husband or any children to tend to. She knew that the moment she married to a man, her life

How The 1920's Affected American Society
The decade of the 1920's was a decade of major changes in American Society. America was quickly
becoming the largest industrial giant in the world, and consumerism was booming during this time.
However, the most significant aspect of American society politically was that the U.S. largely
withdrew from the rest of the world after World War One and advocated a policy of neutrality,
where they didn't get involved in the affairs of other countries. Not only that, but this decade was
also the time during which the well known author Ernest Hemingway began his career. He wrote
many novels and short stories, including one particularly reflective of America's political
inclinations: "Big Two–Hearted River". The historical events surrounding the 1920's, especially
America's political disengagement from the world, greatly affected American society, and this
withdrawal is well reflected in Ernest Hemingway's short story "Big Two–Hearted River".

Governor Charles Evans Hughes in 1916 largely on the fact that he had managed to keep the United
States out of World War I". Despite the fact that America did indeed enter the war these political
inclinations remained largely unchanged once it was over. "President Wilson formally convoked the
[League of Nations] Council... It was to be the last official participation by the U.S. in the entire
history of the League of Nations" (Scott). When World War I finally ended, American society
quickly reverted to its pre–war state; as Sage puts it, "Although the '20s themselves were a raucous
decade, in one sense things were returning to normal after the activism of Theodore Roosevelt and

story writer and novelist was around years ago. Born in 1899, Ernest was raised by his parents,
Clarence and Grace Hemingway. Growing up, Ernest and his parents loved to spend time away from

hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Although he moved away from Toronto, he still kept his job. During
this time Ernest spent at home, he met a woman named Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. Elizabeth
would turn out to be Ernest's first wife. After the couple was married, Ernest and Elizabeth soon
moved to the city of Paris, France. As a writer, Ernest met Gertrude Stein in Paris, who would soon
become something of a mentor to Ernest. Gertrude introduced Ernest to other artists, such as Pablo
Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Biography.com). In 1923, Ernest and his wife, Elizabeth, became
pregnant with their first child. During this time when Ernest wasn't writing, he and Elizabeth
traveled to Pamplona, Spain where they attended a bullfight, in hopes to "toughen up" their unborn
son (Shmoop.com). The couple's son, John, was born on October 10, 1923. In May of 1925,
Hemingway constructed a friendship with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Although this friendship didn't last
long, I believe it gave Hemingway an inside look on the life of a professional author. Within the

A Brief Note On Journalism And The Law
Journalism and the Law Journalism and its practices have been around since the 1700s back in
England, where the first 'pamphlet' met the requirements of a newspaper. As time changes, rules and
laws have been created to protect both: journalists behind a story, and any other people involved in
the story. However, even with the changes that come with time, one thing that every journalist must
have as their ultimate goal is to inform the people with objectivity. Laws vary from country to
country, and even state by state. I will discuss some laws that apply specifically to journalists in the
United States, and I will make note if these rules differ even by state. FEDERAL LAWS THAT
AFFECT THE AVAILABILITY OF INFORMATION
1) FERPA– Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act: is a 1974 law and protects the privacy of
student education records as well as requires schools to obtain a student's consent, or a parent/legal
guardian's consent if the student is a minor, prior to disclosing any information. Journalists believe
this law is vague, and the schools are misinterpreting the way it was supposed to be carried out. For
instance, reporters say that even simple open requests such as lunch menus, graduation honors, and
athletic travel records are being kept secret. As journalists we should know that FERPA:
A. Only applies if the information in the document is completely confidential in the first place.
B. Does not apply if the the records were created for law enforcement

The Reform Movement of Progressivism
Progressivism is defined as an early 20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the
government to the people to restore economic opportunities and to correct injustices in American
life. During this time period, certain aspects of American life were in need of drastic change, so
progressives led the charge towards reforming American society and politics. Among these aspects,
social and political conditions were some of the most heavily reformed, involving women's rights,
and corruption. At the turn of the 20th century, appliances became more common in American
households, reducing the amount of housework for women. Because of this women became more
prominent in the workforce, and they began to take a more active role in politics. As they began to
take an active role, they became some of the progressives who fought so hard for reforms on the
political and social fronts. For example, Jane Addams founded the Hull House in Chicago, located
in one of the poor neighborhoods. It was used as an information center for immigrants, so
immigrants could learn English and be able to go out and get a job to support their families, and the
House was also used by poor Americans as a multi–faceted enterprise. It had a music school for kids
and adults, a school for kids to learn how to sew and other odd–jobs, a trades union for young
women to help them find good, steady jobs, and a coffeehouse to serve meals to the homeless and
poor. Other progressives, such as Carry

Personal Narrative-I Want To Become A Nurse
Introduction
When I was younger I always knew that one day I would attend college. When I was younger my
parents always told me that I would attend college. Nursing was my first choice to major in, there
was only one problem, (I wasn't so sure if it was me that actually wanted to major in Nursing, or if it
was my parents' decision). When I was younger I was always very energetic and was told I had a
"bubbly" personality. My friend Chanelle and I decided to have a YouTube channel. We would just
do random things, and talk about our High School days, and give shout outs to people who went to
High School with us. The YouTube channel was called " The Natalie and Chanelle Show", we got
up to a million views and we passed out flyers all over the school to advertise our channel on
YouTube. As I grew older I realized that I didn't want to become a Nurse. I wanted to major in
Broadcasting Journalism, and use my voice to communicate with other people.
As I grew older I realized there isn't many Latinas who anchor for the local news' Radio stations.

While at post one night Hemingway was first wounded by an Austrian mortar shell, then the same
night he was further wounded by machine gun fire while he was carrying an Italian soldier to safety.
Though badly wounded his injuries were not fatal; all his injures where contained to his legs
(www.timelesshemingway.com). Hemingway spent five days in a field hospital before an
excruciating train trip to Milan. In Milan things took an upward turn when surgery was successful.
Hemingway was regarded as a hero and reported in newspapers and newsreels at home as the first
American wounded in Italy (TimelessHemingway 2). It is debatable whether this was true but no
matter, Hemingway was enjoying himself.
World War One was the setting of many of Hemingway's stories. He used his personal experiences
as their basis but enhanced them greatly. In 1929 Hemingway published A Farewell to Arms; the
novel that many critics consider to be the best ever written about World War One (Burgess 56). It is
based on Hemingway's personal experiences during the war. The main character, Lt. Frederic Henry,
is wounded, just as Hemingway was. He is hospitalized and falls in love with a nurse. Hemingway
also fell in love with his wartime nurse. But Hemingway took the characters further than his
wartime experience. He created action from later experiences. He was very good at putting things
together. He made up whatever he needed to suit his purposes (Hemingway 87). If the actual events

Hemingway was an incredible writer that could speak volumes in only a few powerful words. While
his life was plagued with an unending depression, he was able to bring joy to many through his

Biography of Ernest Hemingway
"Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long
enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter. You will meet them doing various
things with resolve, but their interest rarely holds because after the other thing ordinary life is as flat
as the taste of wine when the taste buds have been burned off your tongue." ('On the Blue Water' in
Esquire, April 1936)
A legendary novelist, short–story writer and essayist Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21,
1899, in the village of Oak Park, Illinois, close to the prairies and woods west of Chicago. His

After Hemingway's depression he was sent to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There he
received electroshock therapy that impaired his memory and stripped from him the concentration to
write. Hemingway also lost the ability to do other things he so loved like fish and hunt. So perhaps
he killed himself because Ernest Hemingway could no longer "be" Ernest Hemingway.
2. Hemingway's works
Ernest Hemingway started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of
seventeen. Here he learned to get to the heart of a story with direct, simple sentences. After the
United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army.
Here he was wounded near the Italian/Austrian front. Hospitalized, he fell in love with his nurse,
who later called off their relationship. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for
Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the
Greek Revolution. During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriate
Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work 'The Sun Also Rises' (1926).
After the World War I, Hemingway lived in Chicago. There, he met Sherwood Andersen and
married Hadley Richardson in 1921. On Andersen's advice, the

As one of the 20th century's most important and influential writers. His writings drew heavily on his
own experiences for his writing. His writing reflected his trouble with relating to women and his
tendency to treat them as objects, as he had four marriages and countless affairs, highlighting his
theme of alienation and disconnection. Now here is why he is what he is by writing about what he
was.
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Dr. Clarence
Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway. Oak Park was a mainly Protestant, upper middle–class
suburb of Chicago that Hemingway would later refer to as a "town of wide lawns and narrow ...

After only six months on staff at the Star, Hemingway resigned and attempted to enlist in the army,
only to be rejected because of poor vision. Determined to get involved in the war, he joined the Red
Cross and was shipped off to Italy as an ambulance driver. His first day on the job, a munitions
factory exploded and he had to carry the bodies and body parts of the women who worked in the
factory to a makeshift morgue. Only a few weeks later, as he was distributing chocolate and
cigarettes to Italian soldiers in the trenches near the front lines, Hemingway was seriously wounded
by fragments from an Austrian mortar shell which had landed only a few feet away. Hemingway
claimed, despite over 200 pieces of shrapnel being lodged in his legs and being shot in the legs
several times, he managed to carry a wounded soldier back to the
Schlusemeyer 3 first aid station. For this feat, he was awarded the Silver Medal for Valor by the
Italian government. Because of his tendency to exaggerate his heroism in telling of his own feats,
however, some believe that Hemingway may have changed some details about the event in retelling
it or fabricated it altogether (Rozkis 235).
After rehabilitating in Milan for a short time, Hemingway returned home and was celebrated as a

Manifest Destiny : A True Sign Of Progress For The United...
Manifest Destiny, which commandeered American life during the 1830s and 1840s, seemed like a
true sign of progress for the country as the United States by the end of the 1840s acquired all of the
land it has now with the exception of Hawaii, Alaska, and several small pieces of land. These new
territories included the Pacific Northwest – Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana –
and cessions from Mexico – California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas – not to mention the
considered addition of Cuba in the Ostend Manifesto. As beneficial as this territorial expansion may
have seemed, it reinvigorated sectional struggles over the question of slavery in territories and the
country overall. These conflicts that would accumulate to become the Civil War included the
underlying ideological distinctions between the two regions, new abolitionist movement, the
Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas–Nebraska Act as the violence stemming from sectionalism
would increase and the differences between the North and South would become irreconcilable.
The ultimate cause of all sectional conflicts in the mid–1800s was the ideological differences
between the North and South that stemmed partially from economic differences as the notably more
industrial North began to embrace both "free–soil" and "free–labor" ideology while the South with
its stagnated agricultural economy and pro–slavery argument. The North had undergone the Market
Revolution in the early 1800s to mid–1800s, yet the South was

Childhood Obesity
EC 315
Shane Martin
Spring II 2012
Purpose Statement Childhood obesity is increasing worldwide. Experts estimate that 1 in 5 kids
between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight. That means that as they get older they will be more at
risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart related diseases. Things that we used to associate
with older people are now affecting younger and younger children. There are many reasons for this
rise in obesity and this paper will look at a few of them. My goal is to show a correlation between
what children are doing and how it affects their chances of being obese. My data comes from the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website. They sent a survey to schools in all ... Show more

This influences what foods are chosen for the meal. Fast food, takeout, quick microwave meals, etc.
are the basic foods a lot of children are getting on a daily basis. The kids diet contains a lot of fat,
salt, and sugar, but very few vitamins and whole, natural foods. The final data point I looked at was
sugary drinks consumed at school (%SUGAR). This survey question looked at middle/high schools
that offered sugary drinks. The data point consists of the percentage of schools that responded that
they offered sugary drinks. These could come from the cafeteria or a vending machine. While
sugary drinks alone are not a big factor, they are usually consumed along with other unhealthy
items.
Data Description The data that I am using comes from the Centers for Disease Control. Every two
years they send a questionnaire to schools in all 50 states. These schools then gave the
questionnaires to students to fill out. Completed surveys are sent back to the CDC to be tallied. The
data is then published on their website. Unfortunately, not every state sends the surveys back, or
asks all the available questions. This causes some gaps in the data. For the purposes of this
assignment, I excluded any state that did not have a complete set of data. This left 35 states to use
for regression analysis.

The Troubled Life of Ernest Hemingway Reflected in His Writing
The period between World War I and World War II was a very turbulent time in America. Ernest
Hemingway most represented this period with his unrestrained lifestyle. This lifestyle brought him
many successes, but it eventually destroyed him in the end. His stories are read in classrooms across
America, but his semi–autobiographical writings are horrible role models for the students who read
them. Hemingway's lifestyle greatly influenced his writings in many ways.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21st 1899. His place of birth was Oak Park, Chicago. There
are many places in Oak Park commemorating his life. Ernest was the second of six kids. He was

Ernest also wrote for the school newspaper, which was his initiation into the world of writing. He
also began writing short stories during high school. He spent the summers during high school at
Walloon Lake in Michigan. This would be the setting of many of his short stories later in his life
(Perkins 438).
After Ernest graduated from high school, he either wanted to join the armed forces or write. Of
course, his dad wanted him to go to college. His dad forbid him to go to World War I also. In 1917,
he decided to apply for a job at The Kansas City Star as a journalist. He got the job and moved to
Kansas City (Life and Works 3). He only made $15 a week while he worked for the newspaper
(Parry 865). He lived with his uncle when he first arrived in Kansas City. He later moved into an
apartment with Carl Edgar. While working for The Star, he covered many interesting stories such as
The Police, The Union Station, and The General Hospital. His first training job was on stolen goods,
crimes and accidents. He also wrote about the many famous people who came through The Union
Station. Ernest worked very hard to improve his writing with the help of his mentor Lionol Calhoun
Moise. Ernest would later be impressed with Moise's lifestyle. Moise was famous for violence,
alcohol, and cursing. While he worked for The Star he learned many things, but he also became
bored. He wanted real action. He was caught up in the war fever of World War I. One thing that

The Life of Ernest Hemingway
"Sometimes when I was starting a new story and I could not get it going, I would stand and look out
over the roofs of Paris and think, "Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write
now. All you have to do is write on true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know"
(shmoop.com). Ernest Hemingway was an honest and noble man. His life was highlighted by his
successful writing career that brought him fame, fortune, but ultimately loneliness. Ernest
Hemingway fell into a hole of drinking and depression (lib.utexas.edu). It was odd for Hemingway
to become so emotionally unstable after having a happy childhood, quality experiences, and a
successful writing career. Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park Illinois in 1899. Oak Park was
the town in which Ernest spent his childhood. Ernest later went on to say: "Oak Park was a place of
wide lawns and narrow minds" (lib.utexas.edu). Life in Oak Park was a pleasant and peaceful place
for Earnest. At home in Oak Park Ernest had two loving parents, his mother Grace Hall was an
opera singer and a music teacher. She helped Ernest develop a love for art and literature. Ernest's
father, Clarence Edmonds, was a doctor and a naturalist. Ernest's father helped him develop a
passion for outdoor sports such as hunting, fishing, and woodcraft. Ernest also lived at home with a

A Farewell Of Arms By Ernest Hemingway
In his novel A Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway wrote, "We 're going to have a strange life."
(D). His life was not ordinary by any means; he became the voice of his generation with his
poignant works capturing the emotions of the American people after World War I. In his novel A
Farewell to Arms Ernest Hemingway attempts to demonstrate through the characters of Frederic
Henry and Rinaldi the feelings of horror and disillusionment the people of the Modern era tried to
escape.
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in the suburbs of Chicago to a middle class
family. As the oldest of six children, Hemingway was very close with his mother even though he
often disagreed with her values (Shuman, R. Baird 897). Hemingway's passion for the outdoors was
instilled in him at a young age when his family would spend summers in the woods of northern
Michigan ("Hemingway, Ernest"). After graduating from Oak Park High School in 1917,
Hemingway decided to continue doing what he loved instead of going to college; he began working

the style of writer Ring Lardner who wrote with a sense of humor. Hemingway graduated high
school in 1917 but instead of going to college like his parents wanted him to, he took a job as a
reporter for the Kansas City Star. His uncle was responsible for him getting the job, because he
knew the top editor. While Hemingway worked for the Kansas City Star he learned about how to
write, and it showed in his later works of fiction. The newspaper advocated short sentences, short
paragraphs, active verbs, authenticity, compression, clarity and immediacy. Hemingway later said:
"Those were the best rules I ever learned for the business of writing. I've never forgotten them"

President Wilson tried to keep the US out of the war, they helped other countries in the fight against

received her Bachelor's of Science Degree from U of I, which is the University of Idaho. Shortly
thereafter Sarah Palin then married her high school sweetheart Todd. Then Sarah then started
working as a sports reporter for a news station in Anchorage Alaska. (makemyfamilytree.com, 2009)
Sarah Palin's adulthood was a very interesting one. Sarah was the leader of her local PTA then from
there she ran for a seat on her local city council and won. These are the days that started her inters in
politics. After her term ran out Palin moved forward and up in position then being elected to serve
on the Energy and Gas Conservation Committee. Shortly after that in 2006, Sarah Palin made
history when she won the seat of governor for the state of Alaska. Then in 2008, Senator John

Cult of True Womanhood: Women's Suffrage
In the 1840's, most of American women were beginning to become agitated by the morals and
values that were expected of womanhood. "Historians have named this the 'Cult of True
Womanhood': that is, the idea that the only 'true' woman was a pious, submissive wife and mother
concerned exclusively with home and family" (History.com). Voting was only the right of men, but
women were on the brink to let their voices be heard. Women pioneers such as Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Lucretia Mott wrote eleven resolutions in The Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments;
this historical document demanded abolishment of any laws that authorized unequal treatment of
women and to allow for passage of a suffrage amendment.
More than three hundred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This document became a huge first step forward towards women's suffrage. Unfortunately, this
victory was short–lived due to the newspapers printing derision articles about the convention and
tarnishing their exposure of equality.
A few days after the convention participates requested to have their signatures removed, due to
ridicule from the newspapers. The papers were malicious, predominantly on the subject of female
voting. The Philadelphia's Public Ledger bluntly stated that no woman would want to vote, "A
woman is nobody. A wife is everything. The ladies of Philadelphia, are resolved to maintain their
rights as Wives, Belles, Virgins and Mothers" (Rynder). The road to equal rights for women were
proving to be difficult in a man's world. "Our friends gave us the cold shoulder, and felt themselves
disgraced by the whole proceeding, complained Stanton" (Rynder). Refusing to give up, Stanton
wrote to every newspaper article in the country to rebuttal against any negative comments that were
published about the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments. In the hope that, "It will start women
thinking, and men, too" stated Stanton (Rynder). Furthermore, Stanton's aggressive approach helped
spread the word about the Seneca Falls

Biography of a Runaway Slave
Miguel Barnet's Biography of a Runaway Slave: Testimonial Literature as History
Few documentary sources exist from the Caribbean islands and the Latin American mainland
written by Africans or their descendants that describe their life under enslavement. In Brazil, two
mulatto abolitionists wrote sketchy descriptions of their personal experiences, and one
autobiography of a black man was published before emancipation. In contrast, several thousand
slave narratives and eight full–length autobiographies were published in the United States before the
outbreak of the Civil War (1860–1865) (Conrad, p. xix). In Cuba, one slave narrative appeared in
the nineteenth century. Penned by Juan Francisco Manzano, the Autobiografia (written in 1835, ...

Black women and men from various African nations resided on the sugar plantations, including
Musungo Congos, Mandingos, Gangas, Lucumis and Carabalis. Montejo comments on the games
played by Africans, sugar refining in small mills, taverns that sold supplies to the slaves, and
religious practices. He rejects the myth that Africans committed suicide by hanging or drowning
themselves, but argues instead that they flew back to their homeland with a religious object (known
as a prenda) tied to their waist. Slaves loved music, particularly the use of the drum. Montejo
laments that the "white man's music had no drum at all. Tasteless" (Barnet 1994, p. 33). Montejo
depicts the Africans with whom he lived as people of great physical beauty, compassion, and
sensuality. He also presents clear evidence of the brutal treatment inflicted on these African slaves
by masters and overseers. Planters often locked their slaves in stocks for two or three months for
minor offenses, and whipping was common. "The barracoon [slave quarters] was bare dirt, empty,
and lonely" (Barnet 1994, p. 24). Slaves rose at 4:30 a.m. and then worked from 6:00 a.m. until
sunset cutting sugar cane and working in the mill.
In a chapter entitled "Life in the Woods," Montejo talked about his decision to escape. After
throwing a rock that hit the head of the overseer, he ran from the fields into nearby

The Old Man and the Sea Movie vs Book

  • 1. Most Dangerous Game Movie Vs Book "The Most Dangerous Game", also published as "The Hounds of Zaroff", is a short story by Richard Connell, first published in Collier's book on January 19, 1924. The story features a big–game hunter from New York who falls off a yacht and swims to an isolated island in the Caribbean, where he is hunted by a Cossack aristocrat. The story is inspired by the big–game hunting safaris in Africa and South America that were particularly fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s. The story has been adapted numerous times, most notably for the 1932 RKO Pictures film The Most Dangerous Game, starring Joel McCrea and Leslie Banks, and for a 1943 episode of the CBS Radio series Suspense, starring Orson Welles. Synopsis Sanger Rainsford and his friend, Whitney, travel to Rio de Janeiro to hunt the region's big cat: the jaguar. After a discussion about how they are "the hunters" instead of "the huntees", Whitney goes to bed and Rainsford remains on deck. While Whitney returns to his quarters Rainsford hears gunshots, climbs onto the yachts' rail to get a better view of the nearby Ship–Trap Island, and falls overboard. After he realizes he cannot swim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most significant of these adaptations – and the only film to use the original characters – was RKO Pictures' film released in 1932, The Most Dangerous Game. Joel McCrea stars as Rainsford; Leslie Banks portrays Zaroff. The adaptation by James Ashmore Creelman adds two other principal characters, brother–and–sister pair Eve Trowbridge and Martin Trowbridge, who are castaways from a shipwreck. The Most Dangerous Game was co–directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack and Irving Pichel; also with a score by Max Steiner, the film was a favorite project of producer Merian C. Cooper. The production shared several sets with King Kong, a simultaneous RKO project that also involved Schoedsack, Cooper, Wray, Armstrong, Creelman, and Steiner. The Most Dangerous Game was a modest ... • 2. How Women 's Rights Improved Over The Last Century? How Have Women's Rights Improved Over the Last Century? With the advancement of suffrage to equal pay, over the last century, women's rights have progressed immensely. Through historic marches and demonstrations across the United States, women protested for their equal place in politics and social progress. Despite the fear–mongering components used in achieving these rights, women's rights are still thoroughly debated within society today. Over the last century, incredible and unreachable goals have been fulfilled for women, such as the right to vote and a sense of equal state in the "Free World," and can only improve in the years to come. July 13, 1848 marked the beginning of a movement that would shape the beliefs and rights of today's society. It was on this day that the fight for social and political equality among America's women began to develop. This renowned movement, the Women's Rights Movement, had many goals in which mighty–powerful women would achieve with a mind–set to push them through any barrier or obstacle obstructing their path to equality. Lasting until 1920, the Women's Rights Movement had a target towards changing how women were treated and looked upon within their "stereotypical" societies. Women advocated their rights through organizations and campaigns, as well as educating others of the unfair justice. With the help of the Women 's Rights Movement and the brave, fearless women who supported this reformation, the fight for women 's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Persuasive Essay About Japanese Internment Camps Can anyone imagine what it would be like to be told at a moment's notice that you must pack up and be relocated from your home all because of your ethnic background? It doesn't seem possible that it happened, but it did. And it is still happening to certain ethnic groups. During World War Two and the bombing of Pearl Harbor the United States Government, President Roosevelt and many American citizens did not trust the Japanese. They needed to be in internment camps like the one at Newell California that is shown above. The Japanese people could be monitored and watched to prevent any underground activities. This was ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt after Japan 's attack on Pearl Harbor. 120,000 people lost their freedom, property, and businesses. Although the United States government later issued formal apologies and paid reparations to survivors of the internment camps, it could not compensate for the horrible conditions and racism that people of Japanese ancestry faced following the attack on Pearl Harbor. However awful this situation was it is understandable that the American people could be influenced by the propaganda of the media as many Americans had family and friends that were serving in the military. Newspapers can be both primary or secondary sources depending on the purpose of the article and how it is written. If it is an account of the facts, it is a primary source. If the article is interpreted or contains an opinion, it is a secondary source. Editorials from major newspapers after the bombing of Pearl Harbor were supportive of the internment of the Japanese. Several types of media containing propaganda were used to sway the American people, including movies and newspaper articles. The propaganda 's purpose was to project that the relocation of Japanese–Americans was a matter of national security after the attack by the Japanese. American's attitudes towards Japanese people quickly became racist, and this attitude was intensified by the media, which played upon issues of racism and fear. The view of the United States government was to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Susan Brownell Anthony Essay Susan Brownell Anthony: The Mother of America If the Majority of this nation agrees that George Washington was the founding father of America, then Susan B. Anthony would have to be the founding mother of America. She was the ultimate leader in the woman's suffrage movement. The Suffrage movement started around 1840 and in a way, it still continues today. Women have only been voting for 84 years (in America) while men could vote from the start of civilization. In her time, women were not allowed to have anything under their name from the moment they were born. If anything had the potential to be theirs, it would instead legally be their father?s or male guardian?s until she was married. Even then, the object would be given to her ... Her friend, Cady Stanton made a significant impact on Anthony?s life, in fact, Mr. Stanton would say to Cady, ?You stir up Susan, and she stirs the world? (Kawalski n.p.). Susan always had that instinct to be a great speaker, but she just needed the encouragement of her beloved friend. Her strong will and personality would definitely have her life and those who were influential accountable. Because she was raised in a Quaker family, she grew up in an environment where women and men were treated more equally; this triggered her desire to speak out when she stepped out into the real world and came to know that women were not treated anywhere close to equal to men. She wanted to spread her opinion on the current issues and traveled around the nation. She would travel to numerous states; South Dakota in 1890 for 7 months, Chicago in 1893 for 4 months, the South for 2 months in 1895 and 1903, California in 1895, 1896, and 1905, London in 1899, Berlin in 1904, Washington every year and made many other short stops (Garraty 550). She was the second child of eight, but she never engaged herself in a serious relationship with a man because she wanted her independence (Stansell n.p.). Persuasive Essay About Japanese Internment Camps Imagine what it would be like to be told at a moment's notice that you must pack up and be relocated from your home all because of your ethnic background? It doesn't seem possible that it happened, but it did. And it is still happening to specific ethnic groups. During World War Two and the bombing of Pearl Harbor the United States Government, President Roosevelt and many American citizens did not trust the Japanese. Although the United States government later issued formal apologies and paid reparations to survivors of the internment camps, it could not compensate for the horrible conditions and racism that the people of Japanese ancestry faced following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The propaganda 's purpose was to propose that the relocation of Japanese–Americans was a matter of national security after the attack by the Japanese. American's attitudes towards Japanese people quickly became racist, and this reaction was intensified by the media, which played upon issues of racism and fear. The view of the ... America was quickly becoming the largest industrial giant in the world, and consumerism was booming during this time. However, the most significant aspect of American society politically was that the U.S. largely withdrew from the rest of the world after World War One and advocated a policy of neutrality, where they didn't get involved in the affairs of other countries. Not only that, but this decade was also the time during which the well known author Ernest Hemingway began his career. He wrote many novels and short stories, including one particularly reflective of America's political inclinations: "Big Two–Hearted River". The historical events surrounding the 1920's, especially America's political disengagement from the world, greatly affected American society, and this withdrawal is well reflected in Ernest Hemingway's short story "Big Two–Hearted River". • 11. A Brief Note On Journalism And The Law Journalism and the Law Journalism and its practices have been around since the 1700s back in England, where the first 'pamphlet' met the requirements of a newspaper. As time changes, rules and laws have been created to protect both: journalists behind a story, and any other people involved in the story. However, even with the changes that come with time, one thing that every journalist must have as their ultimate goal is to inform the people with objectivity. Laws vary from country to country, and even state by state. I will discuss some laws that apply specifically to journalists in the United States, and I will make note if these rules differ even by state. FEDERAL LAWS THAT AFFECT THE AVAILABILITY OF INFORMATION 1) FERPA– Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act: is a 1974 law and protects the privacy of student education records as well as requires schools to obtain a student's consent, or a parent/legal guardian's consent if the student is a minor, prior to disclosing any information. Journalists believe this law is vague, and the schools are misinterpreting the way it was supposed to be carried out. For instance, reporters say that even simple open requests such as lunch menus, graduation honors, and athletic travel records are being kept secret. As journalists we should know that FERPA: A. Only applies if the information in the document is completely confidential in the first place. B. Does not apply if the the records were created for law enforcement ... • 12. The Reform Movement of Progressivism Progressivism is defined as an early 20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people to restore economic opportunities and to correct injustices in American life. During this time period, certain aspects of American life were in need of drastic change, so progressives led the charge towards reforming American society and politics. Among these aspects, social and political conditions were some of the most heavily reformed, involving women's rights, and corruption. At the turn of the 20th century, appliances became more common in American households, reducing the amount of housework for women. Because of this women became more prominent in the workforce, and they began to take a more active role in politics. As they began to take an active role, they became some of the progressives who fought so hard for reforms on the political and social fronts. For example, Jane Addams founded the Hull House in Chicago, located in one of the poor neighborhoods. It was used as an information center for immigrants, so immigrants could learn English and be able to go out and get a job to support their families, and the House was also used by poor Americans as a multi–faceted enterprise. It had a music school for kids and adults, a school for kids to learn how to sew and other odd–jobs, a trades union for young women to help them find good, steady jobs, and a coffeehouse to serve meals to the homeless and poor. Manifest Destiny, which commandeered American life during the 1830s and 1840s, seemed like a true sign of progress for the country as the United States by the end of the 1840s acquired all of the land it has now with the exception of Hawaii, Alaska, and several small pieces of land. These new territories included the Pacific Northwest – Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana – and cessions from Mexico – California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas – not to mention the considered addition of Cuba in the Ostend Manifesto. As beneficial as this territorial expansion may have seemed, it reinvigorated sectional struggles over the question of slavery in territories and the country overall. These conflicts that would accumulate to become the Civil War included the underlying ideological distinctions between the two regions, new abolitionist movement, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas–Nebraska Act as the violence stemming from sectionalism would increase and the differences between the North and South would become irreconcilable. The ultimate cause of all sectional conflicts in the mid–1800s was the ideological differences between the North and South that stemmed partially from economic differences as the notably more industrial North began to embrace both "free–soil" and "free–labor" ideology while the South with its stagnated agricultural economy and pro–slavery argument.
