During the beginning stages of the women's movement era in the 1920's, researchers began to
realize the gender stereotypes that occurred in children's books. Particularly researchers of the
feminist movement seemed to notice that girls were always seen as naïve, passive, conforming and
coy while the boys were always pictured as strong, independent and adventurous. The rise of the
working woman in the late 1940's and the early 1950's showed a different side of women to children
which was the role of the breadwinner. Children's literature showed women as strong, autonomous
and brave. Unfortunately it was short–lived. With the arrival of the triumphant World War II
soldiers, women returned to the home and lived as the domestic provider.
But as time and society progressed, female roles and "female characters in children's literature
became increasingly visible and gender stereotyping became decreasingly evident" (Clark,
Guilmain, Saucier, Tavarez, 439). In an article written by educator Angela Gooden, she describes an
experiment that deals with the differences in the amount of female and male representation in the
1970's and late 1990's. She compared her experiment that took place in 1999, to an experiment that

The Haida People are an indigenous ethnic group of the Pacific Northwest situated along the west
coast of Canada in British Columbia. They are a people mainly from the archipelago of Haida Gwaii
in northern BC as well as Alaskan Haida and the Kaigani peoples which make up the Haida First
Nation.
As a society the Haida are well known for their highly stylized art form that is expressed in their
distinctive carvings and unique traditional house design. Early visitors from the mid 18th century
were astonished by the "ingeniousness" of the construction of their houses and the level of detail in

new section begins in italics, which makes the reader believe that they are reading Drake's personal
log. As a person reads this book, they are made to feel like they are reviewing a captain's log of their
journey. Bawlf includes excerpts from letters the players involved. Letters from Drake, his
crewmembers, the Queen, and even his prisoners are included to paint a complete picture of Drake's
voyage. For a journey that was supposed to be so secret, people sure had a lot to write. Letters from
the most obscure individuals are included. One such letter is one from Magistrate Gaspar de Vargis,
which was sent by courier to another town, Oaxaca, in effort to warn them of a corsair who was
raiding coastal towns. That corsair, of course, was Francis Drake. The varied nature of the origins of
the letters that the author includes serves to reinforce the idea that Bawlf went to great lengths to
research his topic and to make sure that both sides were represented. The first part of the book
covers Drake's early maritime career as he served under Captain John Hawkins. They spent most of
their time raiding Spanish settlements in the Caribean Sea while trading slaves from Africa to local
towns. They acted under the protection of Elizabeth I, with Letters of Marque, which legitimatized
their activities, making them privateers as opposed to pirates.

The City of Charlottetown is a flourishing community of over 34,562 people located on the south
shore of Prince Edward Island. Charlottetown is the capital city of Prince Edward Island, and is
called the "Birthplace of Confederation" after the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference which led
to Confederation (Wikipedia, 2016).

The core culture of Charlottetown is embodies the idea of crafting. This covers many of the aspects

The wording is unique, and not normally used in modern day english which will make people stop
and think about it for a second and make them wonder as to what the campaign means. This is
optimal, because if it gets a person to stop, that not means they are interested, but that they are also
taking the time to read the material provided. In the same sense, it will also create desire, as the
slogan is short enough to stay in a person's head, and simple location reminders will help to spark
desire. For example, after seeing the slogan, if the person sees a sign for Prince Edward Island,
farms, red sand, etc they will think of the slogan, creating a form situational desire. This will then
lead to sparking an interest in planning a vacation to Charlottetown and with enough push, may
create the actual action of booking a trip to visit Charlottetown.
